- Puppetfunk, on 10/10/2007, -12/+63Charlie and the Chocolate Factory anyone? I felt like Johnny Depp was going to rape someone, and he really had nothing on Gene Wilder and the soundtrack of the original movie.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Anti AOL statements in 3...2...1
good compilation actually, majority of these sucked balls - dpcdomino, on 10/10/2007, -2/+33Planet of the Apes for pure suck-age and bastardization of the original story.
and
Pink Panther for the Should Never Have been Made category. - mikebrowne, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I worked on #4, Wickerman. I knew on the first day of shooting it was going to suck. I'm sorry. :(
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20personally, i enjoyed the psycho remake, it didn't live up to the original but i thought it was entertaining. but my decomposing mother is setting across the room telling me that it was derivative crap, so what do i know.
- josegutz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19I thought Christopher Walken would've been a better Wonka
- GirthAgain, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I enjoyed Meet Joe Black.
- akatherder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13If porn remakes count, Forrest Hump ignored the quaintness and threw away the extensive storytelling that made the original great.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15You do realize that the original Gene Wilder version complete raped the original book don't you? They took the title, and the names of the characters and tossed out the rest.
The 'remake' stuck to the main points in the book an awful lot better, even if it did have those freaking creepy little oompa-loompas in it!
Those little bastards made me want to kill 100 dwarfs with a ride-on lawnmower. - lux55, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15I completely agree. Depp can be a great actor, but his performance in this was painful to watch. Gene Wilder wasn't just a creepy character (which he had Depp beat hands down on anyway), but he was actually interesting too. Wilder brought depth to the part. And while the Charlie part wasn't badly done by the kid, the original Charlie and his grandfather (and his mum!) were simply great. They captured a spirit lacking in the remake. All this wasn't helped by the over-the-top production that just didn't ring true to the anti-materialist sentiment running through the story. Seeing the roughness around the edges due to the low budget of the original added something where the production took it away from the remake. The original's music was way better too. All around, the worst remake of a movie that I've ever seen.
- arbulus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Meet Joe Black is a damned fine film.
I didn't know it was a remake until now. - jhuebel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Agreed. Meet Joe Black was a really good movie, in my opinion. It doesn't hurt that Claire Forlani is hot, either.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8that would be a sequel not a remake...
- Chewie67, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Godzilla was really bad. Way to crush a great Cult Classic.
This list also doesn't include all of the TV -> Movie "remakes" Almost all of them are unwatchably bad. Flintstones anyone? - 0zzy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Found you!
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2024582/ - merbot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8anyone else stuck at loading 9 of 11
- pchernik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10Meet Joe Black was awesome, and Get Carter was pretty good.
- thrallie, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I find it pitiful the only thing they could say about the Planet of the Apes remake was that it didn't have a shot of the statue of liberty. Get a life..
- coltrane68, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Heaven Can Wait is itself a remake - the original was released in 1941 and called "Here Comes Mr. Jordan".
That said, the Warren Beatty version was excellent. There was absolutely no need to remake it, other than a complete lack of inspiration and originality by lazy screenwriters and producers. - jhuebel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Taken as a good popcorn movie, I rather enjoyed Planet of the Apes. At least the apes were more believable than the original movies. :-D
- MEGAMERICAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The Producers was extremely awful. Will Ferrel was the only person who was at least half as funny as the original actor. Using Ferrel as the person who plays Hitler was a terrible decision. Not having an LSD type character play Hitler showed that they tried very hard to not have an originality in the story. Matthew Broderick also proved he can't even be 1/10th the actor that Gene Wilder was.
- timfitz99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, their points about the Planet of the Apes remake were weak. It was absolutely awful, but playing it serious wasn't a flaw. The original series was dead serious. Having a crappy script and then tacking on a completely ludicrous "shock" ending were the flaws that killed it.
- Radan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yeah, I agree. I mean it wasn't a movie which would make history, but I think it was a good action filled movie (in a pirates of the Caribbean kind of way).
Though, there's one thing I really hate about people who criticizes movies is that if a movie is old, it's automatically the best film ever made. I don't care if the movie was a technical wonder, compared to today's standards, the acting sucks, the story is cheesy and the camera work is horrible.
If the old Planets of Apes had been released today (even if we forget about the aging special effects) it would never have had gotten the publicity it has now. I mean, has anyone actually seen the original lately? The scene where he finds the statue of liberty got to be the worst piece of acting in the known history. Even Darth Vaders "Noooo!" in the end of episode 3 would have been more fitting.
Rant mode off. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6How bout worst movie pre-make :) Fantastic Four 1994 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109770/
- Sparhawk2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Better than the new ones. At least that one was funny in its badness.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yep. A few days ago I watched the remake of The Omen, and much like Psycho it was almost a shot-for-shot remake of the original but with a different rhythm that made it painful to watch with no suspense and only 1/4 the thrills the original gave.
Seriously, what is the point of remaking something when all the remake is, is taking the exact same plot, the exact same shots and extra added boredom. - TimoP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Two points. The Ring Two wasn't a remake of Ringu 2.
All the King's Men wasn't a remake, it was another adaptation of the novel. The director and writer Steven Zaillian hadn't seen the first film when he made his version. - TheRingmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Escape from New York remake will probably join this some time after its release, filmmakers should leave some movies alone
- LLLSecretChimp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I think he said he'd only do a remake on the condition that he could do everything exactly the same. Along those lines, I'm trying to convince a publisher to give me $10,000 so I can write "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" using a completely different font.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -11/+14I don't agree with "Meet Joe Black". That movie is amazing!
- jessicass, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I'm with you. And it made me a bit sad because I love the original, as well as Tim Burton and Johnny Depp so I thought that the merging of all of them would create some sort of awesome.. but I just didn't feel it.
- Encephalon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What do you mean "could be"? You watched Transformers, didn't you?
- Manuelmty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Dugg for Claire Forlani
- crossmr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+399% of the asian movies hollywood buys?
- BabyWookie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How about a list of best remakes? Let's start with "Dawn of the Dead".
- jhuebel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Totally disagree with you about Gone In 60 Seconds. I really enjoyed that movie. Granted, that's a movie for people who have a car fetish, so maybe nerds need not apply. Seriously, the Shelby Cobra just oozes sex.
- jhuebel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I disagree. "The Italian Job" remake was a decent movie.
- SenorCardgage74, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"I hated the ***** corny singing in the first one."
But you had no problem with the lame-ass rap number. You sound like you might have awful taste...
"Would've rather seen the role go to Marilyn Manson though."
....yep, confirmed. Awful taste. - Shambla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2True, it didn't touch the 1947 version of Home Alone 4. Oh, Mickey Rooney, you and your hijinks.
- lux55, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5A movie doesn't have to stick to the original book to be good, often the transition from paper to screen requires editing and compromise, sometimes lots of it. You have to look at the end result and how it stands on its own, not just as a comparison to the original book. Look at the movie "Everything is illuminated" for example, which changes nearly half the story largely out of necessity and even the ending is different. Yet that was still an amazing movie, despite the liberties it had to take with the story. (If you haven't seen it, definitely do!)
- keithmcbride, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3"Planet of the Apes for pure suck-age and bastardization of the original story."
its actually more like the original book from which the first film was made. the first film changed much about the book version. the third movie in the Apes series was also more like the book, but in reverse (apes visit the human world) - CurlyHayami, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hell yea-the chocolate wouldn't have cut it-he would've wanted more cowbell.
- AgentAce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They forgot Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and The Music Man.
- Sornos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Am I the only one that actually like the Ladykillers?
- dptechie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Wait, you mean "Wickerman" WASN'T supposed to be funny? The entire theater was cracking up when I went to go see it.
- h3ndrix, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I think Psycho would have been fine if the Producers had let Van Sant do what he wanted and just copy it frame by frame.
- somekids, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Michael Bay is making a remake of The Birds in 2009. That could be bad.
- 0zzy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2My brother loved The Island of Dr. Monreau
- Elranzer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3- Remove "Meet Joe Black" from the list.
- Move all movies up one.
- Add "The Omen 6/6/06" to the #1 spot. - SlamShut, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, me too. ***** design. Buried.
