- VillaStraylight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42Where is the epic "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" Killer Rabbit battle?
- WallyAnti, on 10/12/2007, -1/+40I think the army of the dead in LOTR RotK was an excellent idea that just didn't work out on film. It was just over too quickly and therefor anticlimactic. Just another case of something that doesn't translate to cinema well.
What really killed it for me was that when the Dead Army comes in behind Arigorn from the ship, I couldn't stop thinking of the Scrubbing Bubbles commercial. - kunalthakar, on 10/12/2007, -7/+46I will add the "Matrix Revolutions" end battle of Zion as the worst ever. The machine guns get so boring...
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34"To celebrate the launch of the ultimate battle movie, 300, we've compiled a list of our favorite on-screen battle scenes -- and the ones which really made us cringe."
RTFA. - BlueDjinn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25I'd agree with most of these (the ones I've seen, anyway), but they forgot to include the final battle scene from "Glory" in the 10-best list. Great movie, fantastic battle scenes.
- maize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Not to mention the epic battle in "Kingdom of Heaven". Say what you want about the movie, the siege of Jerusalem was nothing short of spectacular.
- nomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"I could have done without the politics lesson, thanks."
That comment actually makes me think that maybe you shouldn't be without the political lesson.
I mean, criticizing the Vietnam war is not real controversial or partisan. You're not going to find many people of any political belief claiming that worked out well. - scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16pearl harbor sucked donkey nuts .. it was barely even about pearl harbor!
- BattleBaconXXL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Dune a Star Wars wannabe??????? Star Wars is a Dune wannabe. Sure all the film and television adapations of Dune are terrible but lets get one thing straight: Don't ever say Dune is a Star Wars wannable.
- betacmag4u, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18The battle scene in the movie HEAT gets my vote!
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14top 8 had me surprised. Starship Troopers was definitely a popcorn movie, cheesy lines, whatsisface as the protagonist, (yes, I know it was intentional) but for that brief moment of battle, you were actually watching a real movie. then you went back to staring at Denise Richard's rack.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The Battle of Agincourt in Branagh's Henry V was better than that in Braveheart.
- maize, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Dugg DOWN, why you ask?
Because you didn't RTFA dumbnut.
"To celebrate the launch of the ultimate battle movie, 300, we've compiled a list of our favorite on-screen battle scenes -- and the ones which really made us cringe." - kerby74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Dugg because: "Worse still, Ben Affleck survives."
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12As always, the author forgot to add "in American cinema."
And I would have added Kingdom of Heaven and The Last Samurai to the best list. - staticdisaster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Anybody like Commando's final battle scene? Arnie takes on a whole army of piss ant soldiers with a couple of machine guns ( reloading, pfft), a rocket launcher and a machete. A true classic.
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Blame Tolkien for the whole Army of the Dead thing. It was a pretty lame idea to begin with.
- Soulhuntre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And thats a bad thing how again?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8anchor man?
- element21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9a pointless ending to an otherwise mind blowing battle.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I believe he was saying the Dune Movie was trying to be like Star Wars.
Not that the story itself was trying to be Star Wars. - HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina

yah, good point, why mention the point that the movie your talking about was making? - ronaldst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjYhTnh6Zaw
Apocalypse Now - Ride of the Valkyries - Meatgrinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The beginning of Enemies at the gate? Or is that too short?
And this was a crappy top 10 list. - airiox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13"No cinematic moment better captures the folly, absurdity and tragic human cost of America's war against the Vietcong"
someone has an agenda much?
That scene was nothing special and certainly doesnt compare to Saving Private's Omaha beach scene. - SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Although not the best movie.
I thought the opening battle in Star Wars episode 3 : Revenge of the Sith. was Amazing and Epic. - therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What about Children of Man, that final battle scene was pretty bad ass, and the Longest Day, that one part where it shows the french soldiers running near that canal, and the camera looks like it is about 100 feet in the air, and it just pans along in one shot never switching angles, that is a damn good one, especially for its day. Well it is a top 10 and no one will agree with them all, for the most part a fairly accurate list I would say, I would also say you shouldn't rank them, just include a top 10, in no particular order.
- fantasticjon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6for what its worth I loved the battle scene in "The lion, the witch and the wardrobe." It gave me the chills when the fronts were about to collide and everything went dead silent.
- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I guess CNN could only come up with 6.. perhaps they should watch MST3K.
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6He clearly didn't like the movie Pearl Harbor (which is understandable), but he didn't seem to focus much on why he didn't like that particular battle scene.
- TalonHawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Um, you can't blame Tolkien, in the books the Army of the Dead only helped Aragorn take over the Corsairs to stop them from joining the battle.
It was Aragorn and his fellow Rangers that jumped off the Corsairs to help in the battle.
That's one of the major plot points they changed for the movie that really bugged me since it made the efforts of everyone up to that moment pointless. - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Troy?
Thats it surrender your man-card right now!!! - nite23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am Spartacus.
- corkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Fight scene, not battle scene.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"thousands of movie extras cheered, then were digitally replaced."
That was hilarious.
"We're supposed to root for irritatingly feisty Keira Knightley battling in a ridiculous leather/woad bikini combo? Hand-to-hand with a bunch of hefty Saxon invaders? In the dead of winter? Give us a break."
Worked for me! - WileEPeyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am Spartacus!
- maize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'd also give some consideration to some of the battles in 'Stalingrad'. They were grand in their own way, and the fighting was arguably much more gritty, brutal, and desperate than some of the films mentioned above. Not to mention the utter doom and bleakness portrayed so vividly in the soldiers eyes.
- Cougarcat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They forgot Band of Brothers, but I guess it's technically not a movie. The first paratrooping scene is amazing.
- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am Spartacus!
- elev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I remember watching an interview with a producer or the director who was saying that they didn't use the jump suites from the book becuase that would have covered up the actors' faces and they didn't want to do that because they had paid for pretty people. He actually said that, that they took out the only edge the marines had on the bugs because he thought viewers care enough to want to see some never-will-be actors face. Unreal.
- stevenvh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Make that Kurosawa, and I'm your man! :-)
Kuro more or less *invented* action film in the fifties with "Shichinin no samurai". - bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3QUICK, GET TO THE CHOPPA!!
- therealrico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That got out of hand really fast!
Brick killed a guy with a spear! - Cimlite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not even that is true...
Star Wars got a lot of inspiration from the Dune (the novel) and so Dune the movie probably got a few things from Star Wars... but you can't really blame it for that.
Read this:
http://www.spookybug.com/origins/dune.html - Veretax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm a little disappointed that Gettysburg made no mention anywhere.
- nomonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good call on the final battle in Glory, BlueDjinn.
That absolutely should be on the list. That scene was incredible. -
