Terminator 4 and The Hobbit coming soon from MGM!
firstshowing.net — MGM is implementing the tentpole strategy in an attempt to recover from 40 years of troubles. Some of the movies that will be part of this new strategy are Terminator 4, The Hobbit, and a Thomas Crown Affair sequel.

Orlando Bloom might be the new Terminator. Still happy? - BevansDesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12How about Orlando Jones? :D

- Cerebral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Wait a second... hold the phone. You mean to tell me that MGM's answer to losing money because people are tired of seeing the same movies rehashed over and over again and pointless sequals is to put out rehashed movies and pointless sequals. The Hobbit is the only one that "technically" is not a rehash.
Ahhh you gotta love HOLLYWOOD! - buddha1822, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yea, but these movies are "off-setting" the other horrible things they are also putting out. They're releasing this crap (straight to TV however): Legally Blonde 3, Cutting Edge 3, Into the Blue 2, WarGames 2, and Species 4. MGM is really quite an odd studio...

- mecole21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Let's make a ton of cheap crappy sequels and see the dumb public lap it all up...
- pocketwookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8BRILLIANT!
- marillion, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Except that the public isn't as dumb as all that. Some are quite smart. Most are MUCH dumber. Between the two, few will watch cheap crappy sequels.

The Hobbit: Won't have any of the same actors for the characters that are also in LOTR
Thomas Crown Affair sequel: WTF? That film's a perfect example of a film that shouldn't have a sequel because it leaves it with a fitting end
There, got all bases covered as to why they won't work.- theBrink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Are there any LOTR characters in The Hobbit? As I recall, besides Bilbo/Gandalf, none. Guess what, replacing 2 characters will not make a huge difference. How do you know they can't star in that film either? If Peter Jackson is a possibility to direct then I somewhat doubt the actors having any contract obligations.
- matman730, on 10/12/2007, -0/+184 characters, actually. Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond and Gollum.
- m0nk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I could see having Ian Mckellen returning as Gandalf, who is supposed to be timeless, but Bilbo was a much younger man (60 years younger) and although the Ring would have kept him seemingly younger than he was I don't think they could pull it off with keeping Ian Holm as Bilbo.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@monk -
Take a look back through digg around the release of X-Men 3 to see some pretty amazing de-aging images for McKellan and Stewart. And, if you recall, Gandalf says to bilbo in the opening of PJ's FOTR movie, "You haven't aged a day." - bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Don't forget the lord of the eagles.
- theBrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I forgot about elrond/gollum - it's funny that for the latter, they don't have to really put in any CG (it's pitch black IIRC) but they still need the VA...
Having read The Hobbit but not the LOTR books, I think it has a better story than LOTR's and if Jackson directed, would probably exceed it. - ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Also, Gloin (Gimli's father) makes a brief appearance in FOTR, but of course they almost certainly won't use the same actor in The Hobbit.
They could probably include brief fan service cameos for Arwen and Legolas as well. Bilbo spends time in Rivendell and with the Wood Elves (Legolas is one of the King's sons). They are not mentioned in the book, but as long as they didn't have any significant role, I think it would be neat to include one or both.
I agree that Ian Holm is too old to pull off Biblo at this point. At the time of his adventure Bilbo wasn't a great deal older than Frodo was in LOTR. The effects needed to "de-age" Ian Holm would be unwieldy at best.
On a related note, does it worry anyone else that the article says "Sloan hopes will be directed by Peter Jackson" ??? Hopes? Anyone other than PJ directing is a horrible idea. If they can't get him, they should put it on hold until they can. - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ZennZero
In reference to Ian Holm, I would agree. He's too old, and in fact he has said himself that he doesn't think he can pull it off.
HOWEVER...remember that story that made front page a few months back about the technology used to "de-age" Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart for X-Men 3? Hmmmm....
http://digg.com/view/entertainment?s=X-Men+3+aging&a=365
I mean, that took 30 years off easily. - ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@JeremiahLBurns
I do remember that, and they did a great job, but Ian McKellan commented that it was one of the more technically difficult effects shots in the movie. To keep that up through an entire movie would have to be pretty resource intensive. Plus, as good as it looked, it still had a little tinge of artificiality to it -- as if things were a little too antialiased.
Also, Ian Holm is showing his age a bit more than McKellan and Stewart (who I have decided hasn't aged since the early 80s - see Excaliber).
Ian Holm recently:

- paulisnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8No Arnold, No see

- gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Bogus hype, some me something besides a blog quoting another blog quoting another blog quoting http://www.theonering.net/ about the Hobbit.
- Katowitz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1One ring says it got it from comingsoon.net which got it from Variety.
- patrickpoyfair, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2nevermind.
- spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does come from variety.
- JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PJ himself said in an interview to Quint at AICN that he's not spoken to ANY studio about doing "The Hobbit". Though, he says he'd like to.
- Jnetty99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Terminator 4... man I hope Arnold is not it in. They should just start a new franchsise in the future fighting the machines.
- daimposter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4that would be great! a Terminator movie based in the future (or is that present since T1-T3 were actually in the 'past'). As someone here has mentioned (and Arnold himself mentioned), The Rock would be a great actor for this role. He's got the movie star humor that Arnold has and the bravado.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah The Rock would be cool. But with the "bad" terminator getting more powerful in each successive movie, this one would have to shoot nuclear bombs out of its arms or something.
- vdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There wouldn't be a single antagonist, this would be the war between what's left of humanity vs all of the machines. Kinda' like a robotic version of Saving Private Ryan.
@Jnetty99: I agree. Plus, given that T3 ended with John locked in a vault to await Judgment Day, it's really the only place they can go.
- gulmd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if they will get the same cast (at least the overlapping characters) for The Hobbit.
- bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The guy who played Bilbo would be too old.
- patrickpoyfair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7According to this:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/24456 , nobody has informed Peter Jackson about this yet. - mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2The Rock should be good in that role.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15i hope you're talking about the hobbit.
- toaplan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would also appreciate The Rock in the Thomas Crown Affair 2: Back with a vengeance.
- bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He could be the great goblin!
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Actually, the article doesn't say it very well, but I believe they plan on combining all three.
The Thomas-Hobbit Affairinator.
The Rock will play a robot hobbit from the future of 3009 that can slay anyone simply by touching them with his 40 million-volt fingers, among other things. He gets too bored with his mundane life of killing other robots that were created for the purpose of killing the kid he protects (played by Dakota Fanning), so he decideds to attempt to empty out a banks safe in broad daylight. A male insurance agent (they are trying to cast Johnny Knoxville for this one, "It would be a cute reunion," PJ announced.) tries throughout the movie to get the "goods" on the Rock but they end up falling in love.
A Peter Jackson Film.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15i hope you're talking about the hobbit.
- pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Oddly enough, they are combining the successful elements of the three movies into one super-movie.
Pierce Brosnan will be playing a robot from the future who has come back in time to help Frodo save Middle Earth from impending crisis.- anillop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds great its kind of an Alien vs, Predator, vs Freddy, vs Jason thing. Pure genius if people like those movies the first time they should like them all combined even more.
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1poop i read all the way down to my comment to see if anyone did something similar. still funny :P
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4ladies and gentlemen let's have a big hand for unoriginality
- daimposter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i'm with saladman. T4 won't be as good as T1 & T2 and won't fly well w/out Ahnold. If he's in it, i expect a more cameo type role. No more than 15 minutes of airtime. The hobbit, it's an intersting sell but don't expect $300M+ US gross like LOTR. Thomas crown affair 2?? WTF? THey will make sequels to AnYTHING!! Oh, and i guess they already had given the green light to Pink Panther 2. A sequel to a horrible movie? huh?
- bultaco370, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lol, I loved the pink panther movies... but it wouldn't be the same without Peter Sellers.
- Tyberius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@bultaco370
not wouldn't - wasn't - as the Pink Panther was already remade with Steve Martin - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Several Pink Panther movies have been made without Sellars and they all share one thing in common, they all suck*.
*OK, some like Alan Arkin in "Inspector Clouseau". - mojoel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, (IMO) they unsucessfully attempted to remake it with Steve Martin. Maybe they should have digitally touched up his face to look like Peter Sellers; and his acting as well.
- Masna, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Sweet.
- Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I fear the hobbit film wont be done correctly, its a very light hearted book when compared to LOTR, its all fun..and i doubt that will come accross correctly in a movie version...
- Matteos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A fun movie? I don't think the battle of five armies or Smaug trying to destroy Dale was supposed to come off as fun.
- bakagaigin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually think the old cartoon (pictured in the article) did it rather well, in terms of mood.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting factoid about the animated version of Hobbit:
It was animated in Japan. The anime-esque style is quite obvious once you realize it. The voice acting isn't bad either, all things considered. It is worth a rental if you haven't seen it -- its very abridged, but as bakagaigin said, they caught the flavor of Middle Earth relatively well. - JeremiahLBurns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I fear the hobbit film wont be done correctly, its a very light hearted book when compared to LOTR, its all fun..and i doubt that will come accross correctly in a movie version..."
"A fun movie? I don't think the battle of five armies or Smaug trying to destroy Dale was supposed to come off as fun."
Not to mention the Spiders, the Wargs, the Goblins, the Trolls...I grew up reading "The Hobbit" over and over again. While it's not as "deep" as LOTR, it certainly isn't completely cheery and lighthearted.
If this movie gets done, and PJ doesn't do it, a crime has been committed.
- DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Crappy movies, and they'll blame it all on piracy. they are all the same. Please, please please, I'm begging for good content. People will always pay for good content.
- skinfrakki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK I can see why LOTR was a three parter, but wtf is the deal with the Hobbit bing a 2 parter? Suck up more money?
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7T4 should be the scariest one yet. It's about killer robots getting sent back in time to run for office and wreak havoc on the state government. It's called "T4: Kalifohnia"
- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1the funny thing is that they forget to say it's going to be one big movie...
"A hobbit travels to the future to stop Sarah Connor from killing Thomas Crown."- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6you were beat to this joke already...
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I really hope they make T4 really good since T3 was so crappy.
- omnithought, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I worry about how the Hobbit might turn out. Maybe if it was Penn as Gandalf and Teller as Bilbo it would be kinda cool. I loved LOTR, but I don't see the same folks getting together to do it.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Hobbit will be awesome (hopefully). That is probably my most favourite book of all time.
- AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins - Spock sings. Be prepared to be scared!! And to wonder just what the frak he was smoking....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPa1qGr9wWI - elsux0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If they can get P.J. to do it, The Hobbit has a lot of potential. Provided the props and costumes haven't been trashed (which I think I read somewhere is the case) then there's a lot of material they can re-use for The Hobbit.
Jackson had said back when LotR was in production that if there were ever a Hobbit film, he "hoped he would be directing it."
The reason for the MGM backing as opposed to New Line is simply that MGM had snagged the rights to a film Hobbit back when LotR was just a crazy idea. New Line couldn't buy them from MGM, and it's obvious that the studio has been planning this for a while.
Regardless of who is in the film, any announcement of "Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' " is going to generate huge, huge buzz. - newanalog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No! No! No! Not "Terminator 4" AND "The Hobbit"...."Terminator 4 and the Hobbit".
Watch hilarity ensue as a group of T1000's start a bar brawl and start tossing hobbits left and right! - steve693, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Two sequels and more book based movies. . .they really think this might save them?
- buddha1822, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not?? Look what LOTR did. If you could make 3 $1Billion+ movies... that would save you and give you enough cash to make a bunch of crap all year long... They don't really think that much in terms of entertainment - they think in money.
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How about renewing Stargate SG1, MGM ?
and also making a couple of Stargate films, huh ?- buddha1822, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They already ARE continuing Stargate! :) Check out this news posted at Comic-Con a while back. Interestingly it's also from MGM as well.

- Tonyisbad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Thomas Crown Affair (remake) is one of my favorite movies, a sequel to an already stellar movie with a perfect ending, i really don't understand? Then again they made a sequel to Ocean's 11, so I'm guess this wouldn't be too hard to accomplish. But whats the premise? He got the girl, gave back the painting as soon as he stole it, and already has plenty of money. We'll see if they can pull this off, it will only work if they bring back Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo and maybe they can even bring back Dennis Leary as well...?
- Recluse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"In addition, The Hobbit, if done correctly, could top Lord of the Rings for being one of the most epic films ever."
No it can't. This person obviously never read the books. - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1omg its true. i checked it on imdb and it's listed. It doesn't say that Arnold is in it though, not yet anyways. It's a 2008 production, so we have a ways to wait still.
