- starfisch, on 12/03/2008, -0/+11what a creepy-ass thumbnail.
- jhails, on 12/03/2008, -0/+9Badly written Hollywood movies in 3D will be still be badly written movies. The only difference is you will pay 5 dollars more to feel ripped off in 3D! Somebody should take the studios away from the middle aged children that are running it now.
- Crazd, on 12/03/2008, -0/+9Until they stop doing the stupid "Hey, check out this awesome yo-yo I'm going to throw in your face" gimmicks to remind you you're watching 3D, it won't catch on as a serious medium. Until then, it'll be reserved for family films and kid flicks.
- andoru, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6Has anyone actually stopped to ask "What's the POINT of having a movie in 3-d"?
Apart from the novelty of the obvious gimmicks (which gets old real fast), I can't really see how 3-d presents an improvement in the actual experience of seeing a movie.
I don't think they can ever get around the fact that forcing the mind to form a stereoscopic (3-d) view from a 2-d projected image, in the absence of actual 3-d objects will always be a physically taxing experience. This is the cause of the headaches that are a common side effect of watching 3-d entertainment. - GODdestroyer, on 12/03/2008, -0/+53-D as in using 3-D glasses, not computer generated images.
I agree though. - MindTrigger, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4They are talking about 3D movie projection technology...oh never mind.
- WocCixelsyd, on 12/03/2008, -0/+4A 3-D animated turd is still a turd. I'm really getting sick of all the 3-D family movies with the basic premise of "things like animals and cars talk, so it's funny right?". I really pine for the old style animated Disney movies. Have you ever actually watched Snow White? It's styled like a moving painting. Truly great stuff.
- msimeth, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3There are some very good ones.

- PapaTG, on 12/03/2008, -0/+23D cinema can look amazing however, the digital technology currently available is not of a standard to give convincing competition to that provided by the 15/70 3D presentation of IMAX cinemas. Sure, it will get there but currently it's a long way off.
It also requires a different style of cinematography. The current trend to create 3D sections out of 2D films (ala Harry Potter) is pointless. Having a 3D character with a cropped forehead detracts from the immersive purpose of the format.
Lastly, the integration of 3D projection into current movie houses at multiplexes will never be successful, or shouldn't be. The purpose of 3D is, and I return to that word, to immerse the audience in the experience. If you can still see the curtains running down the side of the theatre, or the heads of the people in front of you, it is not immersive.
To me, 3D seems like a scramble effort for an industry that has not embraced (but rather attacked) the possibilities of internet distribution. If it's not done right, it's gonna fail again... - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3But can it run Porn?
- Ratteler, on 12/03/2008, -0/+23D that's the ticket!!!! Anything to avoid a decent script.
- Gareth321, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2I know folks, just stirring up some discussion. msimeth, that picture is fantastic.
- G001, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Meh. I saw two Pixar-type movies in IMAX 3D and definitely enjoyed them more. There were no obvious make-something-jump-out-at-you gimmicks, but some of the scenes and landscapes were more impressive with real depth. The only times there was anything remotely headache inducing was when they tried to put things way too close to your face, but that only happened at the beginning with company logos and stuff. The actual movie was fine.
I don't bother going to the movies that often but will for a decent 3D one because it's something I can't get at home. Otherwise I'll usually be lazy and throw it on NetFlix. - jumanous, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1see the cameras they are using... http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/ ... 261megapixel.. makes HD look like a TRS-80 display.
- Abram730, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1andoru is clearly talking about red blue glasses.
We are thinking page flipping and polarised projection and that's way different then then the red blue crap. - jodokast, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1I think 3D is the next logical step in film technology just like HD was. But a like so many above me pointed out: 3D does not a good movie make.
I think James Cameron's "Avatar" has the potential to be 3D's "killer app" so to speak. If it is executed well enough it could push moviegoers to want more and the industry to adopt the technology.
For me 3D doesn't excite me much, but perhaps that's because I've yet to see a worthy 3D film. Those glasses are annoying and more trouble than they're worth. Cameron's method apparently doesn't require the use of glasses so it should be interesting. - RobbieF, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1;(

Third one down has the goods. Never underestimate rule 34. - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Until they lose the nerdy glasses it's not going to take off in any real way. They tried similar format experiments when TV came out and started stealing eye balls from the movie chains. They went through a lot of whacked out ideas and formats before settling on what we take for granted today.
- notoneofus, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1And the technology hasn't improved since 1908, right?
- ATLien74, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2I'm all for 3D. If you put it in the theatre, they will come.
- ATLien74, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Angelina Jolie convinced my mini-me in Beowulf.
- shiftless, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Actually even some of those are good. One of the freakier ones I've seen even had pretty accurate neck muscle movements while talking. Agh! :)
I'm okay with cartoony or best attempt stuff while waiting for 100% accuracy. - Abram730, on 04/19/2009, -0/+1I play my games in 3D on my PC.
All you need is an Nvidia graphics card, glasses, and a monitor that can display 120hz.. I still use a CRT for that reason, although many new TV's, monitors are 3D ready as in they display 120hz or better.
http://ces.cnet.com/8301-19167_1-10134983-100.html
I have the older glasses that hook into the crt cable, so when I get a new display I'll need to get a set of glasses.
---> As for consoles you'll be getting 3D <---
http://www.kotaku.com.au/games/2009/03/blitz_games ...
http://3droundup.com/
It's only software needed for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as Blitz games added the software to the game. If PS3 and xbox 360 added the software, most games could be 3D.
PS:
If they make a 3d porn, it will sell lol... It was years before some people found out they could do more on the Internet then just see porn, but they did in time lol. - joshcxa, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Indeed there are. But when you start animating them is becomes obvious that they are CG. The mouth area gives it away the most.
- worseforwine, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Wait, what does that picture of Tobias Funke have to do with it?
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1I'll go to the movies to see anything in 3d at our local Rave theater. Other movies, why not just wait for video? The glasses look like normal sunglasses so its not awkward. I'm willing to wait to see a Transformers or some other blockbuster in 3d.
Beowulf 3d was awesome but the script itself was lacking.
Journey to the Center of the Earth 3d was all around good for kids.
Bolt 3d was a good movie but the 3d was more like an afterthought and not much of it. - antler, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1What effect will this have on pirates? I imagine it's tough watching 3D movies with an eyepatch.
- ackza, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1Wait how about 3D Video games? Can I play any 3d console on this 3d movie theater's projection system? The best part about holographic videogames are that any 3d videogame is already in 3D and would be simple to project. Unlike real life footage which requires special cameras, a videogame already has data to be displayed in 3d!
However the bad news is that the game would need to render a lot more of the game all at once from every angle and that would require from the console or PC a LOT of processing power and a crazy video card, a holographic video card! But this is all in the very near future! - hstg0nzo, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1if you know the history you know that 3d is what the [hollywood] studios turn to in an economic downturn. it is a scourge on cinema and even if it helps them temporarily [economically] it will never catch on
- DamnMan, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1you watch all your movies on a tiny iPod screen then? With the lights on? In a noisy public area? After all whats the point of anything else if there isn't any added immersion because you can still see the fat guy in front of you with a girlfriend who is way to hot for him.
- ryan83189, on 12/03/2008, -3/+3Of course. The home theater can have 1080i movies, and surround sound, but for 3d you have to go to the theater and pay a premium. 3D done right is more engaging and fun than a regular movie and is easy to do, especially with computer rendered movies.
- renilative, on 12/03/2008, -0/+0Lets replace those over paid actresses with 3d yea... OK but we need a way of doing the voices right.....damn.
