- DangerousP, on 07/15/2009, -2/+17This is a shame. He's definitely one of my favorite directors. Then again, Cleopatra musical? Maybe he is losing it.
- jmdwinter, on 07/16/2009, -1/+14Michael Bay breaks records while Steven Soderbergh is hounded out of the business? I guess the 20th century will be known as the time when Hollywood could still make art films. A time when auteurs like Kubrick, Gilliam or Scorsese had the time and studio backing to make daring, edgy movies that had the potential to succeed despite not generating gargantuan opening weekend box office grosses. That time, my friends, has come and gone...

Ok it's probably not all that bad. - LeechesOfKarma, on 07/15/2009, -2/+13Soderbergh is one of the few directors that isn't afraid to take some chances and would be a shame if he called it quits.
- Richandler, on 07/15/2009, -1/+8He should just keep making Ocean's movies up till all of Hollywood is in them.
- jonathanseely, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7I sure hope its not!
- durruticolumn, on 09/18/2009, -1/+7
I don't have a source on this, but I had heard that one of the reasons the big studios opted out of funding Che is because one of the requirements they had was that Che be in English. That's right, they wanted a movie about one of the most famous Latin American revolutionaries who didn't speak English fomenting revolution in Latin America to be in English. Soderbergh, rightfully, refused, and that's why he had to make an epic film on what is, comparably, a shoestring budget.
Considering, I think he did an incredible job. - kingofinternet, on 07/15/2009, -3/+8oceans 15!
- ssquared22, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6He's made some great films, so I would hate to see him step away for anything more than a hiatus
- feliks2, on 07/16/2009, -1/+6Why should this country learn to speak Spanish?
- jfujita, on 07/16/2009, -3/+8Che was amazing. I hope he doesn't give up.
- randmcnally, on 07/16/2009, -1/+5not to be a dick....
but it's the Miami Cubans who are crushing his career. those guys are pretty powerful and he made a film about Che Guevara, who they all hate - him and Castro. if you don't believe the conspiracy, watch how fast I get dugg down by their lot. - btschul, on 07/16/2009, -1/+4Yeah he was.
- nonymous666, on 07/16/2009, -3/+6Poor guy. Well, at least he's got still got Jules Asner for his wife. For the moment.
http://www.unlulerkervani.com/data/media/795/Jules ... - Kidddrunkadelic, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2They ran the production of Scarface outta Miami as well.
- PeanutGallery11, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2this article has already been retracted...the quotes are from a press conference months ago that were taken out of context.
It's true Soderbergh is off of Moneyball..but GFE was a critical success and The Informant! has already received rave reviews and is being dubbed as one of the best films of the year and of Soderbergh's career. It's also in competition at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival. Cleo was postponed due to reshoots in Hugh Jackman's Wolverine schedule..if you want to make drama out of all of this..go ahead. But he has 5 films he directed being released this year.
the two Che films...The Girlfriend Experience, The Informant! and a documentary on his friend Spaulding Grey that he edited and directed that will air on HBO in December. The play in Sydney was scheduled over a year ago...we should all have Steven Soderbergh's problems.!!! - cuervoman914, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2i think they're too busy smoking their cigars.
- stonedgeek, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I watched Che on the weekend and was very impressed, even though I don't speak Spanish. I thought the first half was much stronger than the first, but that's just the nature of the story I suppose.
- CaughtThinking, on 07/16/2009, -3/+5Che is probably one of top ten best movies I've seen. I'm a native speaker and maybe thats why I just got it - but I'm totally convinced it's just ahead of its time.
When this country learns to speak spanish finally in the next decade or so there will be a rediscovery of that project I guarantee it. - Iexist08, on 07/15/2009, -4/+6bad economy is effecting Hollywood also huh?
- sonnybobiche, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2He made Solaris!
Then again, he also made that disaster called Ocean's 12... - Sleepyhead157, on 07/15/2009, -6/+7haha already. I guess there's always room more people to take his place and mess up along the way
- spanky6256000, on 07/15/2009, -2/+3A break from work is never a bad thing. He'll walk away and come back strong.
- leftysrevenge, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1nah, it's that bad
- silverslayer, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Who wouldn't want to quit with Jules Asner waiting for you at home.
- FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Michael Jordan?
- GoKings, on 07/16/2009, -4/+4To be fair Che was ***** awful.
- Fatalah, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Moneyball would have been spectacular in Soderbergh's hands. We need to get this movie back on track! I want it to be made so badly!
- viacombusta, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Not soon enough.
- LoudMusic, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Who?
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1affecting
- CaughtThinking, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1I meant next few decades - current trends show Hispanics reaching around 30% of the US population by 2050 or so... I suppose you don't HAVE to learn Spanish ;)
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1And yet M. Night Shamalayan keeps working...
- cuervoman914, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1cool it mr gold.
- cuervoman914, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1then the movie is aimed at the wrong market. and a spanish immigrant, why should the US learn spanish?
- Zacko1337, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1Clint Eastwood doesn't look 12 years older than Scorsese.
- niradg, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1I guess Tony Gilroy can just take his place (since he seemed to learn everything he knows from Soderbergh)
- loneraver, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1What happened to oceans 14?
- PowderedToasty, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1He and every other filmmaker will be have to stay retired if people stop paying to see movies.
- brundlefly76, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1What a big baby. You look at all the hell some directors have gone through for their art - this guy is only 46!
Martin Scorsese is 67, and has 6 films in the works.
Clint Eastwood is 79, and not only directs but acts in some of his films.
Shut up and get back to work! - CaughtThinking, on 07/16/2009, -1/+1I think it was better too. It's not a perfect masterpiece but definitely great.
- anagai, on 07/16/2009, -2/+1Maybe its because he made ocean 12 and 13. Obviously he is losing it. Those movies are absolutely pointless and just about style. Lost all respect for him. He should retire if hes going to make movies like those. But Ocean 11 is a supreme masterpiece of movie making. Hes making crappy movies and hes more of a art house director that doesn't bring in the mass audience anyway. He never did. Studios giving up on him
- homeworklarry, on 07/16/2009, -2/+1NO! Don't go, Mr. Soderbergh!! PLEASE DON'T LEAVE US!!
Okay, now do you feel better, Steve? Good. Go make me a movie, bitch. - TheCollective00, on 07/16/2009, -3/+1"Position on Piracy
On Monday, April 5th 2009, Soderbergh appeared before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, and "cited the French initiative in asking lawmakers to deputize the American film industry to pursue copyright pirates", indicating he supports anti-piracy laws and internet regulation.[31]"
***** him. Stay retired, *****. - dlan4327, on 07/16/2009, -3/+1I liked The Girlfriend Experiment. Soderbergh is a decent filmmaker.
- megaton, on 07/16/2009, -4/+2It's "Sarah Paulen", you idiot!
- macmcraeart, on 07/16/2009, -4/+2Soderbergh is such a drama queen.
- mikek814, on 07/15/2009, -12/+4he's a quitter like Sarah Paulin
