- tgc1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6And which one of these buttons calls your parents to come pick you up?
// sorry, couldn't help it. - AReallyGoodName, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I always hear the line 'Star Wars is not science fiction, it's fantasy'. However if you accept that Star Wars isn't science fiction then what is?
Sure Star Wars has a classic fantasy story line of a princess stuck in a castle (death star) who is then rescued. But it also includes ideas of ships powered by ion drives, laser weaponry, intelligent robots and faster-than-light travel.
Jules Verne and HG Wells also used classic stories in futuristic settings. To not count them these works as science fiction is ridiculous because they pionered the genre.
In my opinion science fiction asks 'what if these technologies existed'?
Star Wars does that and inspires people because of that. - vizerei, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7I do believe that sentient robot helpers from Star Wars have inspired a lot more in science than casting a spell on a lady to make her bloat up and float away in Harry Potter
- cnot3, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6you've taken your first step into a larger world
- SnowStorms, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6Chad's getting around Digg today
- ryanscottdavis, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Yeah I saw it in Boston. Old news?
http://www.mos.org/exhibits_shows/exhibit_archive& ... - lougoose, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4It was in Chicago for a while.
- dtele, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3IMAGE GALLERY from Powerhouse in Australia:
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/gallery/0,22 ... - lil666jrkatz, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3this was at the franklin institute in philadelphia. it was amazing
- SonicNirvana, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I went to the same exhibition in Los Angeles, and if anybody ever goes, look inside the Tantive IV (the ship that is boarded in the first Star Wars film, I refuse to call it "A New Hope"), and a miniature poster of a naked Marylin Monroe is visible.
- lougoose, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4I went to this exhibit when it was in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Very cool. And no, it's not new. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4Eternity with nerds. It's the Pasadena Star Trek convention all over again.
- bfaber, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2While Portland didn't have the same dress-ed up people, the same exhibit went through here several years ago. 'A handful of pictures from the exhibit are here, for anybody wanting to see a handful of more close-ups of the models: http://www.bfaber.com/blog/v/2006/StarWars (unedited raw camera dump)
- p341250n, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Philly, too. Just last year.
- Seyser, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1i went to it when it was in minneapolis MN. It was the greatest event i have ever been to! they had most of the props and costumes there. i thought it was funny that hardly anyone was looking at the real world things that were there, i know i wasn't!
- philliezfreak, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1This has been all over the place. I thought it was a little bit overrated, but that's just me. If I was a little younger I might have appreciated it more. It didn't help either that there was a 2 hour wait for the appointment that I already had.
- ScipiosLegion, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2dude on the left looks like the chigurh in No Country for Old Men
- Tonicks, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Minnesota had this earlier. We also almost had Al Fraken...
- SifuMoKung, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2I've always argued that the cel phone is far superior to the comlink.

The reason that people discount Star Wars as fantasy has less to do with the story and more to do with the inclusion of magic. Historically, fantasy literature includes magic in some form (be it spells, powers, supernatural beings, etc.) as a major plot point. Science Fiction on the other hand, is generally accepted to be possible given the suspension of current limits. To use one of your examples, in the late 1800s when 20000 Leagues was written people believed that a submarine that could dive that deep could exist, it just wasn't technologically possible. I would like to believe that we could build an energy sword someday, but i find it unlikely that we'll ever be able to lift objects with our minds. - Jeffholio, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1both
- lougoose, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Pretty much.
- darthashwin, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1i saw this last September in Fort worth Texas. It was great..they had the whole set of lightsabers, C3PO, Naked C3PO , R2 and a huge millennium falcon. It had Vader's Mask and helmet too. I am sure some of you people might have seen it in DFW or other places.
- ncapone, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2This is probably the greatest gallery in the world.
- armakaryk, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1i did the one in philly twice, skip the millennium falcon vip it sounds alot cooler than it actually is. otherwise, frakking awesome. i especially enjoyed the table game they had.
- Tonicks, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1As of the time of this posting, it's +316 Coleman.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1They all seem uglier in person...
- ChefEspeff, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1This came to the Science Museum of MN over the summer. So ***** badass. Here's my favorite picture I took. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1129954& ...
- wilf_brim, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1What, and no Jar-Jar?
/sarcasm - swanny89, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I believe the best term is "Space Opera". It doesn't question the relationship of humanity to technology and what the future holds for us like science fiction does, nor can the sci-fi elements present be completely ignored.
- hydroplane, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1That's not a knife, That's a lightsaber!
- Sornos, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1You've lost all hope, Digg, if you bury a relevant Futurama quote.
- shadekeiko, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I went to that when it was at the Franklin Institute in Philly. It was awesome. They had a lot of the original models and props used in filming, and costumes as well.
- dj88masterchief, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Yea it was the same one in Boston, I was there and saw all of that, it was so cool, they had all the original props they used in the movies, and some were made for the exhibit from Episodes 1-3. Best traveling exhibit around, in my opinion, if you have the chance go see it!! Oh yea and i don't know if they still have it or not, but the Science Museum in Boston had a gigantic replica of a Naboo Starfighter, anyone know if they still have it??
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Darth Vader is saying that those 2 people are never going to get dates.
- jhos1991, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1star wars who?
- lionel1024, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0I saw no fat people. WTH are you talking about? No wonder you're getting buried

- Gardimus, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1I've been obsessing over this movie I made with your mom.
- indecisiveuser, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0It's Pat.
- ElWaffleGrande, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1I sense a great disturbance in the force. It's as if a million voices cried out in pain after looking at this picture, and were suddenly silent.
- aviazn, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1Yeah, I went there in St. Paul. And don't count Franken out yet, this recount is far from over; his campaign says he's up by 22 votes, FWIW...
- yunus, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1They already did this in a TV show I saw last year. It was alright but only popular at all because it was related to "Star Wars"
- JABro, on 12/04/2008, -1/+0I wonder if that's the same exhibit that was in Boston last January.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1can star wars get its own section on digg... so I can un-check it?
