- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The first 3 star wars were good. The last 3 star wars were bad. I think a tv show would just burn anything good left about star wars.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think Lucas is going to ruin Star Wars even more with this move...
PS: No digg because IGN articles are low-quality crap. - systemghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought it was the 30 and 40 year-old men buying all the plastic *****.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Its gonna suck prolly, you cant improve on Star Wars, Stargate and a few others are the exceptions to the fact that movies usually dont make good TV Shows, but a really good director and writer can prolly pull this off
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is likely going to suck, reason being they placed it right between Episode III and IV... just think about the plot walls that puts around any series. No Yoda, no Obi Wan, because they're in hiding, no Padme because she's dead, no C3PO and Artoo. All you have is Darth Vader running around with the Emperor killing people the Empire getting bigger, and the beginning of the Rebel Alliance. I don't know, that sounds like a pretty weak area for development. Why didn't they go with Pre Episode 1 (would have been cool to see the birth of the Sith) or after Jedi??????
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think this is a great idea. Lucas really created a Star Wars universe. a lot like Tolken's Lord of the Rings. there are so many stories that can be told. the Skywalker story? over. but there are plenty of other interesting stories that i would love to see in a Star Wars television show.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5BSG (best. show. ever.) is popular because it's the most un-sci-fi of sci-fi. By that I mean there is no magical technical solution to every problem (see Star Trek and Stargate), and they don't have to explain the technology every episode with technobabble. Don't be so quick to declare "sci-fi is back!", because it's not true. BSG is great because it's primarily a character drama. A very well written, acted, directed, and edited character drama.
- thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SO TRUE. BSG is not about inverting the phase inverter and reversing the polarity on the omnidirectional central operational bios, it's about trust, betrayal, hard choices, and a desperate desire to survive. On that note, I hope that after the season finale on friday, I don't have to wait several months to start the next season.
- MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Rumour has it that Quinlan Vos will be one of the main guys, givien he features so heavily in Republic (now that's it's gearing towards its end). At least he's a vaguely interesting character.
It's worrying that they're saying "It'll be like the Indy TV show". Uh, does anyone even ready the Indy TV show? No? My point exactly.
I wonder if Chewbacca's son Lumpy will feature. I hope he sings a song. - thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This has the potential to be unbelievably awesome, but will, in reality, turn out to be unbelievably lame.
Ugh. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Lucas has proved that hes completely out of touch - Why doesnt he just work on kids animations, and leave sophisticated sci-fi to the people who actually like it?
- jimb0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Both shows have the potential to be really good. You can really do a lot with television shows now, as seen by BSG, Lost, and even going back to Firefly and Buffy/Angel. The great thing about TV it can build, so that you dont't have to save the universe every week. You can also have a ton of character development and interweaving plots. Two hours is really no time to do much, you have to keep the audience interested with explosions and crap. But 100 hours can really get you something cool. Granted the writers have to be good, and there will be a lot of pressure to cater to the masses, meaning there's got to be a lightsaber battle every week, or a superweapon or something. But you can treat your audience as having intelligence, as it is with Lost. Look at Firefly vs. Serenity. What makes Firefly so good is that you get to know the characters, and the funny things about them. In the movie, you needed to have a big bad to fight against.
And the era set between III and IV is perfect, there is so much you can do there. It's the rise of the Empire, which is rich with stories that can be told. And minor characters are good. The masses will always want a Han Solo or something, but hopefully they can have a large interesting cast. And hopefully Lucas won't have too much time to be involved, because the last movies were really just sweet eye candy, with nothing underneath. I love watching them to death, but it would be nice to have more substance, and that is something you can do with having a long runnng TV show. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The disturbing thing about the article is that near the end, it seems Lucas is still focused on 'oooh ahhh' special effects and that's one of the main concerns. Personally, I prefer puppetized Yoda and a decent storyline. I could watch an entire series of Star Wars if the story held up and the acting wasn't bad.
Then again, maybe that's what makes Star Wars fun. Bad acting and cheesy dialog. - zoziw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Lucas were to let talented people not trapped in late 70's cheese create a Star Wars TV show for a modern audience it could be really good. I mean, who would have thought 3 years ago that Battlestar Galactica could not only come back but be the best show on TV in a long time.
While the most recent Star Wars movies improved with each episode, even the last one had questionable qualities to it. I don't think Lucas would let the right people at his baby. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The most fascinating books of Star Wars that I casually glanced over were those post-ep6. When Luke turns to the darkside, Leia becomes a real jedi, etc. There's alot of room for improvement there, and alot of stories to tell.
- redb369, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If "Sci-Fi" is coming back then where's my Firefly. That was the best sci-fi I've seen in a long time.
- achoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He'll only ruin Star Wars if he writes and directs the story. Dynamic visuals and editing effects are his specialty, not writing up a story. He needs to let someone else direct, and he definately needs someone else to write up the story. I hear Joss Whedon was pretty good at writing..
Ok that was a joke, but what the hell, if I hear Whedon is working on a star wars tv show, I'll be watching it for sure. Yeah, I liked Firefly, so what? - smiles23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if a big budget star wars tv show can actually have success. Only if someone good is writing the stories and not Lucas as was said above....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll be hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.
Just so long as he doesn't case Justin Timberlake in any capacity (aka Indy 4 perhaps) it might just be worth watching though :) - guimonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope the makers of Battlestar Galactica sue him if he does this.
- cobaltgrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All good sci-fi is also good character drama. They go hand in hand. The point of sci-fi is to put people in an abnormal universe and see that they're still human. Therefore I disagree completely with your statement: "BSG is popular because it's the most un-sci-fi of sci-fi". BSG is very Sci-fi and very beautiful Sci-fi at that.
- ctishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Two words: George Lucas.
:( - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1flash back to "A Star Wars Christmas Special".... lol... tv just got a whole lot worse.
- willscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree, the content will have infinite permutations. look at how much mileage HIGHLANDER got. highlander (though i watched every episode till the last seasons) is is a zero dimensional libretto compared to star wars. (and dare i hope for a MATRIX tv show?)
- bluekangaroo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This would be the ultimate irony. The original BSG was born during the sci fi popularity boom that followed the original Star Wars release. It was even called a blatant Star Wars rip off by some.... (I liked it at the time).
Now BSG may resurrect Star Wars? Funny. - IceUck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I loved the first two movies. By the third movie, I could already tell there was a committee making sure that there were marketable teddy bear characters (ewoks), etc. I've sat through the most recent three movies, each one a little better than the last, but basically just waiting for it to be over.
Lucas altered the winning mix that he had in the first three movies. When it comes to the TV show...
...pray that he doesn't alter it any further. - MrFisty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've really liked the Clone Wars series, but I've read all the Clone Wars comics (pieced together from different SW series), and I have to say they're pretty dull.
They're too bitsy and we know what finally happens... Vader kills them all.
Let's see more Sith action (like someone explain who those wizard blokes who hang out with the Emperor in ROTJ are).
I'm just not sold on a 3D version of Clone Wars. Kinda sounds like one of those CG Transformers shows if you ask me. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Discussion of Firefly is banned on Digg from now on. :^P
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ engalicorn
your right! it does work....kinda...though in my case it just took it from a digg to no digg:-/
sorry bout that...it was a good post and I totally just swipe a digg from you and cant get it back:-( - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep in mind that we can't hear your tone of voice to tell if you're joking or not, and we don't know you personally, so when you start your post with "all you turds," you're in grave danger of getting written off as a troll, whether you meant to be one or not. Even as I'm typing this, I have no idea if you meant to flame or not. The rest of your post presented a decent opinion, but I can't quite tell about the beginning.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BSG is ok. It's a "space soap opera," and is by-the-numbers in many ways. But I guess you need that if you're going to do a long-running show. Lots of melodramatic character development and story arcs. The great thing about BSG though, is the plot twists. Every time it seems like they're going in a predictable direction, they throw in a very cool plot twist. They manage to make them believable rather than gratuitious.
Now about a Star Wars TV show. It will never work. Star Wars starts to suck if you get too deeply into it. Star Wars is hokey, it's a fantasy, not sci-fi. It's sort of like if you peak behind the curtains at a puppet show, the whole illusion is ruined. Why do you think love scenes in Star Wars turn out so badly. Lucas didn't screw them up, they can't be done in a Star Wars setting, there is not enough depth for something like that to be taken seriously.
Could a TV show with the movies' pacing be made and maintain that much action for an entire season? I seriously doubt it. And imagine how many Jar-Jars there will be.
I hope this show never gets made, it's going to kill Star Wars. - robertgoodwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If Lucas himself stays in the background, the TV stuff might actually be very good. Some of the SW games put out by LucasArts have been great. They have added more to the SW universe than Episodes 1 and 2 at least. If the right people are running it, I think an episodic TV show set between Episodes 3 and 4 could be fan-freakin-tastic! Just PLEASE don't let George write any of the dialog.
- thetron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why doesn't Lucas direct an existing Sci-fi show
- kris2pe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow I hope it will b in cell shade! But I don't really think it will b a smashing success! Unlike the movie franchise
- kalessin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 I tend to dissagree with all you turds on here. Dunno if any of you bothered to watch the SW Clone Wars animated series on Cartoon Network, but those two seasons kicked insane ass. Most people dont realize it, but that series takes (and fills in story details) between episodes 2 and 3.
It explains Anakin's scar on his face and shows him start getting all f'ed-up-in-da-head, as well as why Grevious is such a pansy in episode 3 (he was almost killed by mace windu at the end of the series when he had his insides crushed).
In 5 minute (later 10 minute) episodes, director Genndy Tartovsky ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genndy_Tartakovsky ) did a better job in keeping the true bad-ass spirit of Star Wars alive more than Lucas did with episodes 1-3 (which blew imo). Tartovsky's in charge of the new project, infact, it's CG work (according to that wiki entry, the studio is called The Orphanage and is comprised of ex-Lucasfilm vets) and is supposed to run in direct competition with Pixar. Obviously Lucas was impressed with his work to give him his own wing now.
With Tartovsky behind the wheel in control, I have full confidence that this will be the movie/series that we wished eps. 1-3 were more like. - BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2When will Lucas's madness end!? He's destroying the Star Wars series.
A Star Wars show would probably suck since it would probably be about random Jedi that look like average joes. - dwemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope "wide appeal" doesn't mean "I want 8-year-olds to like it so I can sell plastic ***** to them".
There is a reason why Battlestar Gallactica is a great show, and its not because it has "wide appeal". - doesitmatter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0doesnt anyone realize that lucas isnt making this for the viewers...he is selling out whatever is left of star wars to the anti-iraq war anti-bush anti-military left wing nuts (he is one of them) he has stated his views about why 1,2, and 3 were made.....dont be foolish.....the only reason he is thinking about it is, is to make the rebels fight the all evil republicans. it may sound stupid......but then again truth sometimes does, too often i will add......look his views up on the net and you will see for yourself.......not a secret....he has stated them often......so to hell with lucas and star wars.......now flame away (but at least try and look up what i said before you do).
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Typical. Crap like the newer Star Wars films get a TV series while actual good shows like Firefly are left to die.
- willscott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he might. no body directs every episode of every show anymore since l.a. law and e.r. we'll see both genius and crap. kind of like babylon 5 i bet.
- ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So then how come Babylon 5 lingered in obscurity before dying a quiet death?
I loved that show. - Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Sci-Fi is coming back to main stream TV!!! Now, when are we getting star-trek back?
- rhthekida, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sci-Fi is coming back? Then why did Firefly get the boot? Oh yea, cause FOX runs shows out of order and at different times every week, then kills them off after about 1 season. Maybe this will be on FOX and die a slow and painful death, just like Firefly, Arrested Development, and Keen Eddie.
- jabelar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wasn't that what the Star Wars nostalgia really is -- trying to relive what we thought was cool when we were 8 years old?
- ronintetsuro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On the Joss Whedon tip, I would much MUCH sooner see a network pick up a 3 season contract of Firefly than this sure-to-be no draw.
- jabelar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, the Ewoks cartoon show was good ...
- jabelar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Han Solo
A Han Solo side plot might be interesting. - dolby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The way the star war saga ended you think Lucas should even be trying to compare his show to BSG, he better try the bring RDM on from BSG but that will never happen...i think.
- engalicorn, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3You can undigg or un-no-digg comments too i found... If you digg a comment by mistake clicking the other thumb immediatly with undo your mistake. You have about .2 of a second to do it in. Go ahead try it ----------------------->
