- datagod, on 11/16/2009, -5/+44On an unrelated note...I watched Phantom Menace today with my son. He is 7. He as seen Star Wars: A New Hope, but instead of watching Empire, I let him pick Phantom. I have not watched this movie since it was released. I Hated it back then, but watching my son's excitement and enthusiasm made me realize that it wasn't such a bad movie afterall. I actually was surprised at how good it was, considering how much it disappointed me when I first saw it.
- dodger2020, on 11/16/2009, -1/+22My friends' kids loved it too. I've always heard George say that the films were for kids. I think a lot of the hate was from people who wanted the second(first) three movies to be just like the first(second) three (not to mention the people that just want to be part of the bandwagon crowd). That's hard to do when you do the movies 20 years apart. Effects, acting styles, etc change over time. Taken by themselves, they weren't bad movies - especially for kids. Even though most adults seemed to hate jar-jar and the poop/fart jokes, the kids freakin' loved them.
You might be surprised at how many movies you watched many many times as a kid now seem, well, ***** as an adult. Few movies stand up to that test (Goonies is one that'll never get old for me) - doshindude, on 11/16/2009, -1/+18*facepalm*
Phantom was NOT in the original trilogy. - fragMasterFlash, on 11/16/2009, -0/+13I gotta go bullseye some womprats in my speeder. BRB.
- PhairOh, on 11/16/2009, -0/+12From the title it sounds like a new Michael Bay movie
- TomGfromCanada, on 11/16/2009, -0/+11looks like jedi master glenn beck
- daveward, on 11/15/2009, -3/+12Very well done labor of love. Too bad they'll never be able to make any money from it.
- anxdiety, on 11/16/2009, -2/+10***** the blogspam:
http://vimeo.com/6766302 - R3publican, on 11/16/2009, -0/+7I couldn't finish it. Way too boring. I think 2/3s of the movie was just closeups of peoples faces with dramatic music.
- nortel, on 11/15/2009, -3/+9I watched this movie and it was pretty good. anybody know what movies the hans zimmer and james newton howard music is from?
- skenliv, on 11/16/2009, -0/+6I sure hope they don´t make another one.
To slow movie, and most of the face expressions just looks retarted...
The pace is so slow i almost fell sleep! - Sparky9292, on 11/16/2009, -1/+7I was 32 when I saw Phantom Menace -- it clearly was NOT meant for my demographic BUT it was marketed that way in the trailers for the film. The trailers NEVER showed Jar Jar bouncing around the screen. It was always pictures of the sabre fights, sith, space battles, etc. So that's why ppl got pissed when they when to see the movie.
Jar jar binks -- yes, but he wasn't really the thing that annoyed me. Certainly, there would be naive ultra-friendly races in the universe. My thing was that the physics of the Jar Jar CGI looked cartoony - I never bought that Jar Jar was actually in the scene.
Battle droids knees shake when they are "frightened"? WTF did some programmer code that in?
midi-chlorians - The choice to scientifically explain away The Force was a real bummer. Why not simply observe his kick ass reactions in pod-racing and simply scout him as being a great jedi? Wasn't the gut-feeling enough? I didn't feel there was any value in adding this to the script, and it took away the mysteriousness of "The Force". - datagod, on 11/16/2009, -2/+8No, I am not saying it was well made, but today I watched it trying to see it from the point of view of a 7 year old. I saw the original Star wars when I was 7 and loved it, even thought the effects are horrible by today's standards, and even though there are about 200 bloopers. It is not the well made movie we all seem think it was...but we were young when we first saw it...and that taints our memories...
- FearlessFreep, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4My kids were about the same age watching the prequels as I was watching the originals, and seemed to get as much pleasure out of it. I don't think anything can match for me the feeling I got watching Star Wars when it first came out, but if I can see that same joy in my kids when watching Phantom Menace, then I think Lucas did something right
- DanVanHalen, on 11/16/2009, -2/+6Anyone else notice the mini icon for the site is the Star Trek symbol?

Clearly this fansite is part of the rebel alliance...and a traitor - Hobbes57, on 11/16/2009, -0/+4Going through it, I've at least heard:
King Arthur (was like two-thirds the soundtrack)
The Last Samurai
Batman Begins (very briefly, used a drum part)
Gladiator
Kingdom of Heaven
It's not comprehensive though, a few brief ones got away from me, maybe someone else can fill it out - antdude, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3http://www.reignofthefallen.com/ and you can download the full movie: http://www.vuze.com/download/GGZAQVLA5EUDG5KYYLTZD ...
- Crashwithuhk, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Well made in terms of craftsmanship, but this movie is a perfect example of how well framed shots and good lighting can only go so far.
It felt as if the writer/director forgot that Star Wars is a fun adventurous universe (something is seems even Lucas forgot recently) and thought that the key to legitimacy in the fan film community was to write a story that took itself too seriously. - Captainbobo, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3I agree. My nephew started watching Star Wars with Phantom is totally enthralled by Episodes 1, 2, and 3. I do; however, feel torn about Lucas' decision.
If a child watches 1,2, and 3 in that order, then the BIGGEST TWIST IN THE GALAXY with do nothing but fall flat. However, if the child watches in the released order (4,5,6,1,2,3), they will get the twist, but may not have an appreciation for the twist because they are so young.
Either way, Phantom may seem bad, but its audience was supposed to be made for kids but tolerable for adults. Luckily, LucasArts does a better job with The Clone Wars Animated Series in this regard. - quamb, on 11/16/2009, -5/+8looks terrible.
- watership, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Lucasfilm is tolerant of fan films. That's why they're so much of them.
- Sylx, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Meh... I'm a little disappointed. If they were going to make it slow they might as well build story while doing it. Atmosphere is one thing, drawing things out is completely different. I couldn't bring myself to watch the whole thing.
Also, I'd like to comment on the over-use of the "close-up". I mean, wth. I know they could have come up with more/better camera angles than that.
Great concept, horrible execution. - EnglishmanInAu, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3Couldn't watch it. The opening shots were just too long. Drama is not built with a 10 second upward pan.
- dotMH, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3Do they really say that the midi-chlorians are the force in the movie?
Cause I've always thought that the two things are just correlated. They notice the correlation and use it to quickly measure jedi potential...
I'm not a Star Wars expert so I wouldn't actually have any facts though...
Btw. didn't really like the fan film... I mean I appreciate the effort, but it seems that this project gave more to the makers than the audience. - ElAmo, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3(part) black guy plays the sith, white guys play the jedi
nice.... - burgerboy06, on 11/16/2009, -0/+3that is exactly what i thought
- qazws, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2I think I remember watching the fan made trailer and forgot about it until now.
- TomGfromCanada, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3I LOVE STAR WARS!
- phlyphl69, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3Good for you!
- DutchMonkey, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2Lucas regularly allows fan projects as long as no money is made from them.
- PlatnumPlatypus, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2So you're saying that the first (fourth) movie is actually a kids movie (of six) and that the fourth (first) movie continues the trend the original three (four, five, and six) meant for the series (one, two, and three included)?
- tootim, on 11/16/2009, -1/+3The website doesn't seem to like being loaded in the digg frame. Can you blame her?
- ParticleMan420, on 11/16/2009, -0/+2why did you read it before it was even on the front page if you dont even like star wars?
- antdude, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Maybe it is a joke?
- falconear, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Interesting. Is fan fiction going to give way to fan film as time goes on?
- promodotcom11, on 11/18/2009, -0/+1I wonder if there will be any female characters that will spawn a new age of Star Wars Cosplay? No one is hotter than Princess Leia for years http://comdotname.blogspot.com/2009/11/incredibly- ...
- TwwIX, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Liam Neeson's performance kept the movie from falling completely apart.
- dodger2020, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1Lucas said before ANY of the three came out that people probably weren't going to like the first two due to the love story aspects and general mushiness. But that the third was going to be darker. I remember hearing that before the first one came out as I was working at a video store at the time. ugh
- xaxxon, on 11/16/2009, -0/+1This is far better than the movie linked. Actual action and FAR better acting.
- jakobrowning, on 11/16/2009, -6/+6then make something better.
- Shadic, on 11/16/2009, -1/+1*titsplosion*
- xaxxon, on 11/16/2009, -1/+1The beginning is pretty good.
The brass that comes in around 1:00 is terrible. It just SOUNDS like keyboard brass. This continues throughout anytime there is a held brass note.
The repetive 16th patterns around 1:30 are too perfect and don't sound real. Same with the trill at 3:00 and other places. Too perfect. It sounds like one instrument is doing it instead of many and the frequency is too consistent.
It's better than I can do, but the overall quality is not going to fool anyone into thinking it's an orchestra and sounds more like something to be used on low-budget Sunday morning cartoons. - joejitsu, on 11/16/2009, -5/+5I think I will like this more than I liked episode I.
- Regulator980, on 11/16/2009, -3/+3For those of you with internet ADD wondering whether this is actually a good movie worth watching, here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7f9lSC6YAk
- mmx2000, on 11/16/2009, -1/+1This movie sucks and I hate you.
- Sparky9292, on 11/16/2009, -2/+2Phantom, Clones were "kid" movies, but I would say that Lucas seemed to finally give into the complaints and made Sith really really dark. The amount of decapitations, electrocutions, jedi kids getting slaughtered, someone burning slowly to death via lava, strangling a pregnant woman, makes that movie WAYYYY different than the others.
Phantom and Clones are really rated G where-as Sith should have been rated R. - newzdude, on 11/16/2009, -3/+2It is a derivative work and might get OWN3D by George Lucas. Good thing the dude who made it kept harping "fan art" and "homage". Let's hope that's enough to get past legal review.
