  • PrayerNeeder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You have to wonder how much of this is actual mistranslation on the Chinese translator's part versus misinterpretation on the reader's part. There are colossal differences in our idioms versus their's. Connotations differ widely. If we called someone a dear or a told someone to bug off, the transliteration would differ widely from what we actually meant.

    For instance, the Japanese prefer to say something is "very difficult" instead of saying "no." I'm 30, and thus too old to talk teenager. But back in the day, my brother would say that something "vacuums" because the principle had deemed "sucks" a dirty word.
