- Heidenreich12, on 05/11/2008, -32/+388anyone else see the trailer and knew it would be *****?
- jstad, on 05/11/2008, -49/+351I could have told you it was going to bomb from seeing the previews. It looked absolutely horrible, even if it is OK from reviews.
- jstohler, on 05/11/2008, -55/+303Good. The Wachowskis have made 3 crap films in a row. Maybe this will force them to go back to their roots.
- youtellme8, on 05/11/2008, -23/+242Surprise! The Wachowski siblings are too arrogant for their own good. The Matrix was great, but one good film doesn't make them great filmmakers.
- inactive, on 05/11/2008, -49/+252The only way it could have sucked worse is if it starred Will Farrell.
- inactive, on 05/11/2008, -58/+228I saw the first 7 minutes online...it looked terrible...just god awful. I was actually pumped to see it...then I saw that, and all my enthusiasm was completely gone.
- mtkings, on 05/11/2008, -36/+177Half you people discrediting this movie haven't even seen it. Excuse me, haven't seen more than the first 7 minutes or so. It was a badass movie and they did a really good job of sticking to the speed racer plot. If you don't like Speed Racer, cool, don't go see the movie and expect to like it. As far as the way they presented the movie, the c.g.i. was unique and that doesn't make it bad. The movie was good, it was geared towards kids as was the original speed racer and I'm sorry if there weren't Spartan warriors fighting to the death and killing each other in brutal ways.
- NeoCortex, on 05/11/2008, -8/+143I saw this the other day, and I thought it was a fun movie. If you go in expecting a live action version of the cartoon, you'll like it. Remember, the cartoon wasn't exactly high-brow cinema. It's just meant to be flashy, fast, and nostalgic. I think it accomplished that.
Plus, Trixie is still hot. - HyperJack, on 05/11/2008, -18/+149I hope you're not counting V for Vendetta as one of those 'crap films'!
- robthom, on 05/11/2008, -8/+109Not enough robert downey jr. I guess.
- Acidwire, on 05/11/2008, -7/+105Has anyone here actually seen the movie? I see allot of "from what I've seen in the trailers" and "the previews look terrible."
- Ganja420, on 05/11/2008, -11/+94and the latter films of the Trilogy were stupid.
Lets dance and rave in Zion while the sentinenals are trying to invade us! - Handout, on 05/11/2008, -2/+79What are you, mad?
This is digg. Land of snap judgments and infallible, uninformed guesstimates. - Mutton, on 05/11/2008, -4/+78...I'm not sure what to do. HALP
- pablo0713, on 05/11/2008, -23/+99Sorry but it didn't feel like Speed Racer to me. From all the previews I've seen, it just looked like a mish-mash of colors and flying cars. They should have gone with something more realistic looking, something closer to the animation I remember as a child.
- leonardutah, on 05/11/2008, -12/+84After seeing everything else that they have put out, I'm starting to believe the first Matrix was a fluke. Sometimes everything just comes together on one project and then you can never really get back to that level. I'm willing to stay open minded, but really, I think I'm done with the Wachowskis.
- swantonamobay, on 05/11/2008, -6/+75Well I actually really liked the movie. To me it was what Snakes on a Plane should have been, super campy and funny.
- inactive, on 05/11/2008, -8/+79Buried for being a *****.
- Ganja420, on 05/11/2008, -5/+70i dont remember that much CGI in panic room... just a really stupid plot
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -10/+77So now every film they make that doesn't redefine a genre is crap? V for Vendetta was great and no sequel could possibly duplicate the experience of watching the original Matrix the first time.
- freshyill, on 05/11/2008, -28/+91Guess what? NOBODY GIVES A ***** ABOUT SPEED RACER!
And that's the problem.
You can't go and make a movie adaptation of an old TV series unless people have some nostalgic attachment to it. I don't know a single person who has ever been a fan of the show. You can adapt plenty of worse old shows because people *do* have an attachment, even if the show completely sucked.
I could make I Love Lucy the movie and people would flock to it, and it would at least have a respectable opening, despite being ***** terrible, because people remember the show fondly.
Speed Racer the movie might be great, but since nobody really cared about the cartoon, all they see is a silly looking movie with flashy special effects based on some old Japanese cartoon. Why is this so hard for Hollywood to grasp? - Boing, on 05/11/2008, -15/+71Is anyone actually surprised by this?
- Accolade1, on 05/11/2008, -12/+70If I wanted an epilepsy-induced seizure, I would go see this..
- commyostrich, on 05/11/2008, -5/+62I saw it Friday night with a few friends and we all thought it was fantastic. The production values were off the charts and the visual effects were phenomenal. If you are basing your hate on the first 7 minutes then you are a naive fool. If i just watched the first 7 minutes of There Will Be Blood and nothing else I would've been like "Great, a silent film about this guy falling in oil pits". Luckily, I wasn't an idiot.
If you go to this movie and take it for what it's worth, based on an old anime, and just let yourself get into it, it's fantastic. I'm definitely buying this when it comes out on DVD. - decyx, on 05/11/2008, -2/+58...or watching Iron Man or, better yet, saving their money for Indiana Jones and The Dark Knight.
- lava, on 05/11/2008, -7/+66wow, I didn't know everyone hated it based on the trailer. I went to see it last night and it was really good, it's visually stunning.
- Ganja420, on 05/11/2008, -17/+67Matrix Revolutions.... nuff said
- offput, on 05/11/2008, -6/+54They didn't direct that.
- psion01, on 05/11/2008, -4/+52I loved the movie. Once you get passed the psychedelic palette and the first thirty minutes of disjointed exposition, the film really kicked into high gear. This film felt like a live action cartoon and is definitely going on my video shelf when the DVD comes out. Hell, I might buy into blu-ray for this flick.
- farfegnugen, on 05/11/2008, -10/+54Or WIll Ferrell...
- farmboymdp, on 05/11/2008, -47/+99Speed Racer is the trippiest, most psychedelic movie I've ever seen. The previews barely scratch the surface.
- inactive, on 05/11/2008, -6/+49I dugg you up for the closet homosexualness
- MikeSD34, on 05/11/2008, -3/+49Have you ever seen Speed Racer...
Have you ever seen Speed Racer... on weed... - bloogoo22, on 05/11/2008, -14/+64saw the movie and it was spectacular in all aspects. visually mind blowing and original, certainly not overpowering like you would think. the story line was surprisingly captivating, it remains true to the cartoon but also turns a badly written cartoon into an immersive live action film. i was not sure what to expect, if anything i thought it would be terrible, as most people would. but it was spectacular, and i think this movie will take off from word of mouth, next weekend it will be interesting to see if they gross over 20m, hopefully theaters don’t pull it. it was better than iron man.
- Scaryclouds, on 05/11/2008, -4/+46I don't know I really liked V for Vendetta. I know it doesn't follow the comic books at all, and was more about America the Britain, but I still thought all the acting was well done and it had good cinematography.
- snds, on 05/11/2008, -2/+42To be perfectly honest I saw it and enjoyed it, a lot. There's a lot for family's to enjoy and it had this great campy over-the-top feeling. I don't think this movie was really targeted to anyone but kids. The problem is that kids these days don't really know who/what Speed Racer is. I liked all the nods to the original show and Matthew Fox did a pretty good job as Racer X. Obviously the movie went a bit overzealous with the races but it made it somewhat charming and added to the style of the film. If I really wanted to pick something that I hated, it was the uber-saturation of the film. It was just trying too hard to be a cartoon.
I think people are taking this movie too seriously. If you were thinking the movie was going to be anything like the anime then you are diluted. Watch the movie for what it is, and not based on previews or preconceptions. I went into the film hearing bad stuff about it but I decided to give it a try anyway and i was pleasantly pleased for a rainy afternoon flick. Sure it's no summer blockbuster but it was good enough that it's going to be on my blu-ray "movie to purchase" list once it goes to dvd, which sadly could be sooner as opposed to later. It was a lot of fun for me because I played an old Speed Racer game for the pc and it reminded me a lot about it (even more so than the aging anime show). The frenzied road battles and the gadgets to make your way past all the enemy racers were great. - LucerinRed, on 05/11/2008, -1/+39From IMDB
Director:
James McTeigue
Writers (WGA):
Andy Wachowski (screenplay) &
Larry Wachowski (screenplay) - bincoder, on 05/11/2008, -14/+55It's all p2p's fault. Damn pirates!
- Handout, on 05/11/2008, -22/+58I like how every person who has even hinted at thinking this film isnt utter ***** has been modded down. I suppose I can expect the same fate because THIS MOVIE ROCKED MY WORLD.
- RobotBuddha, on 05/11/2008, -1/+34Wow, that's pretty harsh.
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -4/+37Or Colin Ferrell.
- psion01, on 05/11/2008, -1/+33Go watch the movie and see what you think. Especially once the film gets going with the cross-country race in the Mach 5. Believe me, the previews tell you nothing about the film except that it looks like it was made in Photoshop.
- Roykirk, on 05/11/2008, -4/+35I seem to be one of the few who liked it. Watched Iron Man and Speed Racer, one after the other, and while I liked both films, I had more of an emotional connection to Speed Racer. I also thought the visuals of the film (and not just those of the races) were spectacular. I loved the production design. While the story was simple, it had some themes that resonated with me.
Iron Man had some strong moments too, though I didn't like it as much as I hoped I would. Nevertheless, I'd happily recommend either Iron Man or Speed Racer as nicely entertaining flicks. I expect both to go into my Blu-Ray collection. Speed Racer, with its vibrant colors, will look especially wonderful. - Jhiaxuz, on 05/11/2008, -12/+44Absolutely. There was no hope for this movie really in my eyes. Even with all it's special effects it still looked like a giant bowl of WTF.
- marktastic, on 05/11/2008, -2/+34Yeah, it looked more like Nintendo's F-Zero
- alliekins619, on 05/11/2008, -2/+34Honestly, I thought it was pretty good. If you like insane stylized action (which I do) it's an incredible film. The race sequences were intense, the CGI was amazing, and the film editing was awesome.
- mattcoady, on 05/11/2008, -11/+42The problem with some directors is, they get a budget that is just too big and go ape ***** with CGI. Like David Fincher when he did panic room.
- mattcoady, on 05/11/2008, -3/+30Remember how the camera went through everything, key holes, wall sockets, air vents.
- cowcowmoomoo1, on 05/11/2008, -0/+26I agree, I don't understand the overwhelming dislike of it. It was exciting visually, and if you look for an original, detailed, intense plot from every movie you go see, you're going to be sorely disappointed a whole lot. Speed Racer is a popcorn movie, but it keeps you interested throughout. And the final race is pretty damn cool.
