- decepticrat, on 07/23/2008, -1/+91The Riddler's real name was Edward Nigma (sometimes written Nygma), not Mr. Reese... E. Nigma.. get it.. *Enigma*. I doubt that short stubby fella who played the accountant will be returning as the next bat villain.
- xerofilter, on 07/23/2008, -5/+67Batman vs. Predator
- Dismember, on 07/23/2008, -1/+50The idea of adding Poison Ivy to the next Batman movie is way out of line with the story that Christopher Nolan left us with in the Dark Knight. She would step in from nowhere with a blatantly different story line. No, this next movie needs to continue to be about the Gotham mob. I hate to admit, this guy's explanation of Catwoman makes sense - I just don't want to see her again. If their has to be a new super villain, I vote for Penguin as a billionaire who steps up to lead the Gotham crime scene, rather than a physical freak in Batman Returns.
I do, however, have a feeling that the Scarecrow could come back and be a major presence, since he had such a small part in TDK. - centran, on 07/23/2008, -7/+55"So... Where Does ‘The Dark Knight’ Leave Us?"
where does it leave us?... 10-20 front page digg submissions a day. - Nathrat, on 07/23/2008, -0/+45Aside from that not being the Riddler's name, I can't image Nolan casting that guy as The Riddler.
- colosis, on 07/23/2008, -1/+38i only ask for one thing : no robin
- DutchHolland, on 07/23/2008, -30/+64The character who tried to reveal Batman's identity was named Mr. Reese (pronounced like 'mysteries').
Definitely the future Riddler. - 1807, on 07/23/2008, -3/+34Please JBonner71 Don't stop watching batman movies! You are special! your opinion matters!
- jmpeagle, on 07/23/2008, -0/+31except Nolan does stay true to names in the comics and the Riddler's real name is Edward Nigma
- Raiu, on 07/23/2008, -1/+27Never doubt Nolan.
I remember the 'wtf's' and moans when Heath was first cast as the joker. - Ourcellardoor, on 07/23/2008, -1/+26From Wikipedia:
"The Penguin is depicted as a short villanous man and is one of Batman's archenemies. He is known for his love of birds and his specialized high-tech umbrellas. A mobster-type criminal, he fancies himself a "gentleman of crime". Unlike most Batman villains, he does not theme his crimes around a psychotic obsession; his intelligence and aristocratic personality starkly contrasts with demented Batman villains such as the Joker or Two-Face. His nightclub business provides a cover for more low-key criminal activity, which Batman tolerates as a source of criminal underworld information."
In keeping with the mobster-realistic theme, Penguin is the obvious choice. It's clear the Nolan brothers enjoy contrast and as much as I'd like to see a Clayface or Mr. Freeze it would not fit into the realistic series that they have redeemed. - justiceape, on 07/23/2008, -4/+28I think the death of Rachel makes Catwoman excellent speculation. As for the rest of the article, WHAT in the HELL are you thinking??? Faked Two-Face death? Uh no. Faked for who? Only Batman and Gordon and his family were there. And Gordon already faked his own death. Another faked death would be stupid. Two-Face is dead, as he should be, because he can't carry a movie as a villian, at least not in this movie's universe.
Poison Ivy? Seriously, that's got to be the lamest villain ever. "All the environmental issues" or whatever the author said would come to the fore is a cheesy, horrible reason. Not compelling at all. Did anyone see The Happening? That's plants attacking people. Lame as hell. Plus, I don't know if plant control is realistic to pull off with Nolan's Batman's world. There's like a jillion Batman villains (I'm no comic expert, but he's been around for what, 60 years?), and Poison Ivy has to be the all time worst one to make the main one for a movie.
But the Catwoman talk is spot on, IMO! - robomixx, on 07/23/2008, -0/+23http://img105.imageshack.us/my.php?image=tenatridd ...
Perfect for it no?
Also didn't Nolan say no Robbin, catwoman or penguin in an interview? - gglynn07, on 07/23/2008, -7/+29I don't see why everyone is speculating about the next villain. Why does it have to be a traditional "super villain." I think TDK left a huge opening that many are over looking. I think the next Batman should deal w/ the Asian organization/mob that was behind the scenes throughout the movie. I don't know if they would be considered "Yakuza" or what, but I think it would be interesting to see Batman take on a crime organization that is controlling all of the other crime organizations, all the while having to deal with being labeled as a criminal himself. This would keep the story more "real," and allow for Nolan to tie up loose strings by linking everything back to "The League of Shadows," and possibly Ra's Al Ghul.
- AshamedAmerican, on 07/23/2008, -0/+21Riddler's real name is Edward Nashton, he later changed it to Nygma to play off "E. Nygma".
- Brennn10, on 07/23/2008, -0/+21The Dark Knight left us back at the beginning.
- cinemajunkie70, on 07/23/2008, -8/+28I would love Ra Al Ghul to come back.
- funkyloki, on 07/23/2008, -0/+20You don't know what you are talking about. Having seen the movie, that was definitely Cillian Murphy, the same guy who played the Scarecrow in Batman Begins.
It is backed up by IMDB as well.

- amanilaenvelope, on 07/23/2008, -0/+19Has no one considered Deadshot at all or something. He seems like a realistic villain to me.
- chadwalters23, on 07/23/2008, -3/+21from AICN "It is a shame that we’ll never see Heath as the Joker again, but what I hope is that they don’t just let the character go. Instead – like Telly Savalas’ one run at Blofeld, it set the rules for the character. If anything, Heath laid down one awesome dare to any who would dare follow. I just hope someone has the sack to pick up the grease paint and knives and give it a run. Personally – I’d nominate Javier Bardem."
- Toonami567, on 07/23/2008, -3/+20Dugg because of the comments from people living under rocks saying "I hope the Joker comes back, he was really good."
- cusoman, on 07/24/2008, -0/+17I don't know if you've noticed, but the Nolan-verse of Batman takes a lot of the Batman canon and completely stands it on its end. Something as simple as re-naming the the Riddler's real name isn't that far of a stretch.
Besides, how do you know it isn't trickery by someone who was already developing into the Riddler before the movie began? - thestranger, on 07/24/2008, -3/+20Rainn Wilson as the Riddler.
- StarWarsWise, on 07/23/2008, -0/+17Yes he did. Multiple interviews in fact.
The Riddler is probably the top contender for the next villain. - FreddieD, on 07/23/2008, -3/+20Maggie: I'm more off-putting
Jake: I'm a bigger box office drag
Dad: Kids, kids... you're both.... just.... horrible. - luckydevil713, on 07/23/2008, -1/+17I was thinking Black Mask as a villain. In the comics he unites all the different gangs and mobs to team up against batman... that seems to be where it's heading. A dude who wears a 'black mask' to protect his identity doesnt seem all that far fetched either in this realistic Gotham.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Mask_(comics) - Rudegar, on 07/23/2008, -0/+15or Dracula
- ahoyhoy1, on 07/24/2008, -0/+15Deeadshot was in the new cartoon which suppose to take place in Nolan's storyline, between Batman Begins and TDK.
- jmpeagle, on 07/23/2008, -4/+18it could add some edge to the franchise by having women getting the ***** kicked out of them by a hero and not a villain...it would be even edgier if his final blow to her occurred as she was pregnant
....also, the first 2 films have had 2 villains, maybe the 3rd film will have 3 or 4 in a very complex web of deceit and destruction - hydroplane, on 07/23/2008, -2/+16He also has stayed far from the previous batfilms and E Nigma stirs up cheesy images of Jim Carrey.
- StarWarsWise, on 07/23/2008, -0/+13Scarecrow made a cameo. It was really him, and it was really Cillian Murphy that played him. Get your facts straight.
- solesoul, on 07/23/2008, -1/+14Nolan could even work in elements hinting that The League purposefully encouraged Bruce to become Batman, in order to cause the escalation from mafia to the terrorist like "super villans" such as the Joker that would eventually bring down the city.
- Obzerva, on 07/24/2008, -0/+13I think you mean triad, not yakuza.
- 1807, on 07/23/2008, -0/+13the Final scene would be Batman kicking cat woman down a flight of stairs.
- mysn239, on 07/23/2008, -9/+22I'm glad Rachel is gone and will never be back
Holmes and Gyllenhaal are just so terrible. - Jrr6415sun, on 07/24/2008, -0/+13Christopher Nolan has said he is not doing the penguin as it doesn't fit his world
- jmpeagle, on 07/23/2008, -8/+21i vote for catwoman as they killed off the only supporting female cast member
- Gartersnake, on 07/23/2008, -0/+12Except they show him with the mask off and its Cillian Murphy. So yeah, its Scarecrow.
- angelad, on 07/23/2008, -1/+12Batman beating the pregnant villainess who's pregnant with HIS baby ... now that'd be something. Yeah, but not in a Nolan movie.
- pillcounterd, on 07/24/2008, -0/+11Michael Jackson?
- digglet08, on 07/24/2008, -0/+11the character was, not the actor
- democrats, on 07/24/2008, -0/+10I may as well add my 2 cents in this discussion. I want new villains but i would also want the Joker to be recast. As i posted before. Now now, before you fanboys burn me at the stake for suggesting this let me state why I am for this (i know a lot of you also may agree)
Just like Ledger gave everything he had for the role, Nolan is a professional and he will do what is best for his story to be told. If it includes the Joker, then I believe Nolan will not allow the death of Heath to stand in the way of the story. This by no means shows disrespect to what Heath has created but in fact, in my view, shows that Nolan will not allow the character of Heath created be led by his unfortunately passing but to continue to live on -- as Heath probably planned and had hope for. It takes a brilliant director/writer to figure out how this will play out successfully and I see this as a challenge that can be welcomed by Nolan and Co.
Its one thing to say that the Joker may not be needed in BM3 - that is fine - I just find the argument that Nolan would in someway diminish Heath Ledgers take on the character if they recast quite silly or that Nolan would be completely against recasting. That is simply foolish to assume 100%. I can understand that argument, but likewise as I just said, i think it would be an honor for Chris to continue what Ledger did as long as is done with 100% of heart and required by the story. I for one would be extremely happy to see the character alive again on screen because I view it as a tribute to Heath's work and most importantly, an essential part to who the character of Batman is. In some shape or form, the Joker MUST return is my opinion. The cards have been dealt. Perhaps we'll find another ace up our sleeves.
A lot of people are taking recasting to a very personal level. I can understand and sympathize from where you're coming from. But let's get grounded here a bit. Follow me if you will: What is comes down to, when all is said and done, Heath was hired to do a job. He did that job and then some. He did something amazing and it will never be forgotten and it will probably be bench marked for years to come -- but that doesn't mean he "owns" the role figuratively speaking just like Katie Holms didn't own Rachels role. Granted we have two VERY different scenarios, but if Katie Holms had passed away, most of the same fanboys on here that are steadfast for not recasting the Joker, would be calling Nolan to recast of the character of Rachel with an actress of equal or better (hopefully better) acting ability than Katie Holms. So that being said, Heath was outstanding, Oscar worthy in my opinion, but his passing, as tragic as it is, should not determine the future of the Joker Character. If someone of equal or better ability is casted -- I for one am for it. I am eager to see what this new person would bring to the table. I trust Nolan.
At the end of the night, I do not believe that Mr. Ledger would want the Joker to never appear again on screen. I am positive Heath had many discussions on the possible future of this character with Nolan prior, during and after his delivery. I think if the right actor was able to breath life and add more to what Heath created, then by all means -- bring the nemesis back. The Joker IS Batman's greatest foe. He is the unstoppable force forever going against the unmovable Batman. I for one do not find it disrespectful but quite an honor for whoever is given the chance to wear those shoes. - Jrxl, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10Nolan has already denounced the Penguin, he stated that the penguin is to much of a far-fetched villain to appear in his films.
Black mask would do a great job at raising Gotham's criminal underground again.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Mask_(comics) - abovealltherest, on 07/23/2008, -1/+11I want the Riddler.
No Robin. - stellamaris, on 07/23/2008, -2/+12When he got the new armor, Lucius said something about how it would/would not protect from cats. I can't remember which, but I noticed it. It would have to be the perfect actress to pull it off.
- ego_slam, on 07/23/2008, -0/+10Dear sir,
In response: halle-freakin-lujah - ahoyhoy1, on 07/23/2008, -1/+10It seems to me that you might be wrong.
- bcasper1, on 07/24/2008, -3/+12I think everyone is forgetting about one of Batman's greatest archenemies, The Penguin. To do it realistically and actually more true to the original Batman storyline, The Penguin is a real aristocratic person who is involved in underground crime, not a physically deformed and vile penguin/man such as Danny Devito's version. I think that opening leaves a lot of interesting story to play on considering this article talks a lot about how Batman is now outcast as being a criminal, yet we can see a lot of Bruce Wayne and Oswald Cobblepot interaction. Just my two cents.
- Beatmiser, on 07/24/2008, -2/+11I for one am hoping that it ends here. I LOVED the Dark Knight and I honestly don't know that there's any way another film could do anything but detract from it. I know it's the sequel and this doesn't work for an analogy but wouldn't it have been great if the Matrix had ended with the Matrix? I don't need more movies to piss on what was sheer brilliance.
