- muzzle, on 10/12/2007, -16/+67I really don't care if it is bad, its the simpsons. even bad simpsons is better than anything else.
- SamKellett, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46@oesj: So right
@0o0moylan0o0: So wrong.
Both The Simpsons and Family Guy have petered out. The Simpsons changed their humour, it used to be clever culture references, now they take the easy route and write in something stupid for Homer to do. It gets old. Family guy was never good, just funny. Now they've run out of jokes and you realise how little else there is. Futurama is the way forward, I cannot wait for the new series. - oesj, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36i stopped watching the simpsons long ago - the newer episodes just give me the feeling that the series has been spread too thin (if that makes sense). crappy slapstick humour that doesn't work in a cartoon and (unintentionally) moronic jokes. i hope they can turn it around for the movie and leave us with at least something decent to remember it by. from the clips i've seen, it actually looks pretty good.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -8/+33Am I the only Simpsons fan that has a tiny, itty bitty shred of hope for this movie?
- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Dying. not dieing.
- Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Whether it's going to be a good movie or not I can't say, but I'm pretty sure it's going to rake in the cash at the box office.
- SonicBoom1000, on 10/12/2007, -15/+32Call me an optimist, but I think it will bring new life into the dieing franchise.
- sandeepg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Just read the article but where does it say they're "still working out the basics, including the story"? 10 weeks before release and they don't have a story set in concrete?
I doubt it. - Calculon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I would go see it if it was just the old episodes "The Monorail" "Bart Sells His Soul" "Fat Disability Homer" back to back. Maybe the bowling one too...
Ps Batman's a scientist. - weoh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9And what about Troy McClure and other voices of Phil Hartman?
- jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Monroe was labeled as dead, but a later episode changed that to suggest he was just terminally ill. Doesn't explain the Marvin Monroe Memorial Hospital, though.
- AstralSin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7they could always appear in clouds, like bleeding gums did in his final episode
- Undiculous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7How many of you have actually been watching lately? The show turned to a fairly big waste of time for a few years and I stopped making a point of catching the episodes, but since maybe season 16 (I think it's season 18 now), the quality has really been returning. The freshness and originality is slipping back in. I don't know where it's coming from or why it disappeared, but it's really great to see. As long as they don't make a habit of this and start cranking out sloppy movies, I think this definitely is not going to kill the Simpsons and will instead just be a fun aside.
- Jeffler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9j3rm, Dr. Monroe wasn't dead, Bleeding Gums Murphy is though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm really tired of "true" Simpsons fans bashing the franchise as it approaches a landmark 400 episodes. Sure, it's old. Sure, it has changed. Sure, I'm looking forward to new episodes of Futurama.
But hell, it's still The Simpsons.
You don't have to watch the show as religiously that you viewed previous seasons, or have the geek-like wherewithal to remember inside jokes and trivia. But to intentionally avoid viewing the new episodes of the Simpsons is going to make you miss out on what small parts, if any, that will appeal to you. Just take it in more casually. Don't miss out on the fun! 400 EPISODES! - bossm4n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I had the pleasure of sitting in on a Simpsons table read a few weeks ago at the Fox lot with the entire gang. One of the producers said there's not an animator in town that isn't working on this movie right now because of the ongoing rewrites and updates. He also said they have probably produced enough footage to produce 5 movies. It's interesting that it's being animated locally as well as overseas. I got the undeniable feeling they are doing this movie more for the fans than for the money. They are putting in ridiculous hours since they are still on their regular show schedule as well. Some of the actors literally ran out of the trailer after the script reading to get to a recording session for the movie. The detractors can run smack all they want, but you cannot take away from the incredible success this show has had.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@oesj
I think it was somewhere around seasons 8 and 9 that it started to go downhill. Maybe they got new writers, maybe the writers forgot what made the Simpsons so funny.
One thing I know is that they no longer try for any kind of realism, which makes the outrageous stuff less funny.
Homer shouldn't already know he's going to do something stupid today, and if he's going to do something stupid he shouldn't act like it was just what he's supposed to do. - igyigyigy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8They mentioned Dr Monroe was dead, in (I think) the 138th Episode spectacular, but I dont remember seeing any other reference to it...
- glypht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ah classic lines…
- "Sounds like Springfield has a discipline problem…"
- "Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time!"
- "Your dreams may vary from those of Globex Corporation, its subsidiaries and shareholders." - pauleric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They could be in a flashback as Lisa considers what to do during the riot, or the mob scene could be somebody's dream, they could visit their alter-egos in 3-d world, they could be zombies raised up by Homer's little nuclear mistake. It's a cartoon, they can do anything they want! It's not like they care much about continuity.
- IceZZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5They aren't working out the basics, they are just tweaking a few scenes and cutting scenes that aren't up to snuff. This is standard stuff for a show that can deliver changes 1 week for the air date of a weekly episode. Why do people insist on inaccurate titles? Read the article first people!
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Why am I not surprised they're still working on this. They've had 16 years to write a movie and to make it the best that it could ever be... If they're editing and reediting and adding to the story right up until they ship it to theaters, it's going to be terrible.
- horizontaleight, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6As a die hard Simpsons fan (up to season 9), I will be seeing this movie regardless. I feel as if I owe it to them for the lifetime of quotable lines they have provided us with. No show has ever come close to the impact the Simpsons had for our generation, with the exception of Seinfeld.
- JrGhoull, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6i was REALLY dissappointed by the commercials for the simpsons movie...sure it had all the characters and what not...but it didnt have the actual feel of the simpsons...it was like something else entirely really...with the looks of the simpsons but with nothing that made the simpsons great. i still watch it...but you can tell the simpsons are no longer the simpsons
- getliquified, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4omg that trailer is hilarious
i cant wait to see it
lmao @ homer cracking the whip and yelling, "rest, rest!" - rothgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a friend who animates for the simpsons and she has told me that they are done with the animation process. Yes they are still putting the movie together but the animation is finished.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2@Undiculous
I have to agree with that one. I started watching again recently after a big break and I was fairly surprised. I was actually LAUGHING at a lot of jokes in the episode. I think it was probably better than any of the episodes I've seen for the last five years or so. They still have a long way to go to be as funny as their heyday (and it's probably not even possible at this point). But it's actually been a watchable, entertaining show recently.
My suspicion is that they realized they better shore it up to help with the movie. If the show was still doing lousy, it might affect the movie. - j3rm1981, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Jeffler...Thanks. Musta been half asleep. Forgot about Murphy.
- CharlesP2009, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7LOL, you seem to only know the episodes by the incorrect titles of the pirated episodes from P2P networks, it's "Marge Vs. The Monorail" and "King-Size Homer".
- j3rm1981, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I think the majority of fans hold out at least a little hope. But like so many things we love, we fear loosing them. This is a big step for a show that so many still love. Here's to hoping.
By the way..."mob scene with every Simpsons character ever" in the description - I know I'm being nit-picky, but at least three characters are dead. (Scratching my brain trying to get beyond "Grimey", Dr Monroe and Maude) The article says 'nearly' every character. - dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2The previews already proved how stupid its going to be.
- conman16x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The bowling one"? Yeah because there's only one episode about bowling.
P.S. I also love the episode "Fat Disability Homer" *snort*
/Comic Book Guy - Pottersquash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have ALOT of hope, but I do think that this money will end Simpsons, and I think that it is the point. They always said we'd get a movie when the series was done and I think the series is winding down
- Narwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11I don't care whether it's bad or not. I'm seeing it for the animation. It's visually freaking amazing.
- CharlesP2009, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I stopped watching the show in 2002 or so, the comedy is so dry and painfully stupid, and there's far too much slap-stick. But I will go see the movie, just to see it, I'm not expecting much but we'll see what turns up. Even though I don't think the show is funny anymore it's still amazing that it's been going in one form or another for nearly 20 years now.
- su1man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worst Crossover EVER! no just kidding I can't wait. Even if it isn't going to be like the good Simpson's days..its still a Simpson's MOVIE something I've wanted to happen since i was in 6th grade maybe.
- eightynyne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Aye Caramba! A Simpson's Movie!
Don't have a cow, man. It's going to be cool. - dardenne, on 07/17/2009, -6/+6family guy is complete rubbish.
when it comes to criticism to the american way of life, south park owns all! - Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hey j3rm1981, you'd sue them already?
- aggiejaa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4The Simpsons are WAY past their prime. Hopefully the movie will let them go out with style...but it is time for them to go out.
- hypnotizd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@muzzle
Meh. - Acronym, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1d'oh! where is the any key???????
- Acronym, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1d'oh! where is the any key?????
- dark2025, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah ditto with almost everyone here. I stopped really caring for the Simpsons (still watch it sometimes) a couple of years ago. The jokes are too forced now, and poorly executed. It's funny how at first Family Guy was said to be a rip off of the Simpsons and yet, I find that the Simpsons are going for the Family Guy style of randomness and slapstick humour and leaving behind the subtleness of their previous seasons. To be honest, Family Guy does this a lot better. I wish Futurama was still here, because that show was funny to the end and had further potential.
- sexybobo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@weoh
wish i could find the actual quote but as ned once said TV networks like cartoons - so that if an actor leaves, they are easier to replace as no one can tell the didily difference. or something like that. - donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2does abyone else have issues with people digging restricted news articles that require either subscription or a sign up to log in. I mean, Horray! you have an account with a news website, but did you consider that maybe the rest of us DONT? I for one dont appreciate having to sign up for everything in order to gain access to it, cause then all i get are more emails, etc. and its just one more pain.
Can someone link to a version of the article thats NOT restricted to NYTimes members only.
wait... nm... Ive lost interest.... - sexybobo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@SamKellett
what you have to ask your self is with futurama is possibly the quite while they were a head what if when the bring it back it starts to get like the Simpsons they are still great but they will never measure up to what you remember. I just hope that bringing them back wont ruin our good memory's of them. - jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It'll be worth it If they get just one classic line like:
"My cat's breath smells like cat food."
"Anything's possible with Commander Cuckoo Bananas in charge."
"Stop saying 'Hawaii' in there!"
"That monkey is going to pay." - Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1*sigh*
They are NOT rewriting stuff. Its typical media foobar..
You must be american. (no pun intended) - wobblybob, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2MOVIE EXEC: Hey, we are gonna make a movie length Simpsons!
Matt Groening: But... ran out of new jokes about 5 years ago! DOH!!!!!! -
