- Arnold22, on 10/11/2007, -1/+92Please have better writing. I think everyone who saw number 3 died a little.
- r1fl3m4n, on 10/11/2007, -3/+69I hate how good movies turn into useless cash cows for big time cinema production companies
- Freshjive787, on 10/11/2007, -1/+62shrek 3 was like turning a blind corner and hitting a semi truck. then getting stuck in a bed in the ER where you can only watch videos of trains wrecking in slow motion.
- LogicBomB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+51I would love it if the people who make these decisions would understand that just because it keeps making money doesn't mean they should keep it going. All they do is piss people off while lining their pockets.
Unless you have a good game plan, after the third movie, you should generally stop. - Davies, on 10/11/2007, -0/+47Aaargh, this makes me so mad! Why don't they put their $$$ into original movies? All these big companies are killing the art of movie-making with these damn sequels.
- Grimshaw9, on 10/11/2007, -1/+48They did its just buried under all the money they're making.
- SocialPoison, on 10/11/2007, -0/+45I'm betting on plot lines.
4 is apparently a prequel... so I'm betting on this scenario:
Shrek's parents get cursed so they have an ogre baby. For a time they try to love him as one of their own, but he's just too damn ugly. As Shrek hits his teenage years, he begins to lash out at his parents who have shunned and kept him locked inside. During this time he begins to brood and cut himself. Eventually he escapes the "prison" of his parent's house... and wanders the streets homeless. A blind man teaches him how to play guitar... so Shrek makes a band. Dressed in all black and wearing makeup, Blood Blackened by Angst storms up the Never Neverland charts with their single "My broken heart under thine boot"
The movie ends with a musical number. - kupa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44Milk it, Milk it, Milk it! No seriously. Milk it good. Anyone taking bets on a Shrek 6 or 7?
- form3hide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made. Shrek-the T-shirt, Shrek-the Coloring Book, Shrek-the Lunch box, Shrek-the Breakfast Cereal, Shrek-the Flame Thrower.
- hipnerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+35Third movies as good as the first (or close to it)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Goldfinger
Return of the King
There are probably others. Sequels don't have to suck, they just usually do. - kushed, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36Don't blame the cash cow, blame the morons who will support it.
- MaynardJK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Make it stop please. I'm fine with ***** movies because I can just not go to them, but the massive marketing campaign that goes with them is obnoxious and inescapable. Shrek cereal, Shrek ice cream etc. Ugh.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26The problem with 3 is that it didn't have a good villain. I mean, it was funny, but in a different way from the first two. The first two had both hillarious moments and a good funny story. The third only had a bunch of hillarious moments.
I mean, Prince Charming? Ugh.
The Fairy Godmother (Saunders) and Farquad (Lithgow) were both _awesome_ and hillarious bad guys. If they had come up with someone better for 3, it probably would have been a lot better. - SocksOnRye, on 10/11/2007, -1/+26Why is it that Hollywood that never got the "too much of a good thing equals sucky sequels" memo?
- vsujohn2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+24@socialpoison
You've given that WAY too much thought.... - drakulon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21If the Land Before Time series could get 12 movies, Shrek can get 5.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18"Shrek-the Flame Thrower"
The kids LOVE that one. - thedragon4453, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16word, just take a look at the spiderman franchise. oh well, at least in 10 years we'll get a "spiderman begins"-esque refresh.
- fixyourthinking, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Are you saying that Terminator 2 was NOT better than the original? Are you saying that Aliens was not just as good as Alien. Are you saying that Empire Strikes Back was not the best sequel? I could go on and on. If there's more story to tell ... then it should be told.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16No they don't.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Star Wars had six episodes, why can't Shrek? I mean, everyone knows it's just as big of a cultural icon....
/heavy sarcasm - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18Then how come I bought a ***** Shrek green mint shake at mcdonald's?
Note: It was FANTASTIC - redfernjon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14That's the Happy Meal toys sorted for another 3 years...
- oneniner, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Let's see, who does Shrek fight in this one, Mr. T or the russian?
Straight to video!! - lpmiller, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14just how, exactly, are cash cows useless? I mean, I don't want shrek 45 either, but I can hardly blame someone for squeezing money out of something that clearly loves to give it.
- fixyourthinking, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12It really doesn't matter if they do - anybody can do those three voices. The guy at Universal Studios Florida that does the Shrek Live Photo shoot (that plays Donkey) sounds exactly LIKE Eddie Murphy
- tony.tammaro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11For CG movies like this, sequels cost slightly less to produce, what with most of the characters already designed and such. All they need to do is manipulate them in semi-comedic ways. I do agree, though; three should be the limit.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11The beauty of the first movie was that is was fantastical and unrealistic (so the CGI artists could go nuts, the movie look great without trying to look realistic).
Did anyone else notice that the CGI artists in Shrek 3 were trying too hard to make it look "realistic"? Honestly, I thought all the human characters were all suffering from melanoma. They were drawing rashes, moles, sunburns and freckles EVERYWHERE just because they could. It was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within all over again. - Veritate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11*sigh*
My 6-year old son just told me the other day that we could buy the Shrek 3 DVD once Shrek 4 came out, because it would be cheaper then (yeah. . . he's a strange kid). I cheerfully agreed because I never thought there would be a Shrek 4.
I guess the good point is he doesn't mind not seeing Shrek 3 in the theater. - bsdfree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Star Wars Episode 4 was pretty awesome.
- kuwan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10And thus we see why Pixar > Dreamworks
Look at how many sequels Pixar does, almost none. Toy Story 2 is the only one that I can think of. Pixar is more interested in producing quality original stories and almost all of their movies reflect that. Dreamworks on the other hand just looks like they're trying to make a quick buck by squeezing Shrek for every penny that it's worth and producing quick, plotless, slap-stick crap like Shark Tale and Madagascar. - unitethenations, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@socialpoison (#6956822)
Let's bookmark this and check back in 1 1/2 years... - imamessy1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Stay tuned for the review of Shrek 5.... thousand.
- ScoobyG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Shrek 4: The Quest for More Money.
I know, I know, overused. But oh so appropriate. - Kurto2021, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I heard on the next Shrek they are going to bring in 3 villains, not give much back story on them, even though they are villains they will have a good heart, instead of showing us the villains they will focus on the familiar dumbass love story that the other movies have done, the girlfriend will get captured (again) and spider....err I mean Shrek will have to save her.
Hideous. - np374, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Eddie Murphy's voice makes baby jesus cry.
- xstarsprinklesx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Yes, and after 5 makes a bazillion dollars they'll announce 6-10.
- Kurto2021, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Umm...Shrek is Dreamworks who has to throw in perverted dick jokes and old gags to appeal to adults. Pixar just does it with a good story and has only done 1 sequel out of the 10 or so movies they have done
- mt066, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13Shrek 5: The Shreking
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10"...apart from the sappy kids movie factor..."
Funny, that never seems to be a problem with Pixar movies. - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -8/+15This the reason I like Pixar.
- Phlyers, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10Shrek 2 was actually pretty good. The third one, on the other hand, was horrible. All it was missing was the literal shark jump.
- putamare, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8http://www.mcdonalds.com/usa/eat/features/shrek.html looks like an association to me...
- theghoul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Let Shrek die please.
#3 shouldve went straight to video. - evilTak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Do we really need to replay the entire argument from Scream 2?
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The Land Before Time 1 had George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Don Bluth, when they were close to their primes. It's no surprised that the movies that followed weren't as good.
- JohnnyXmas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Great. Now all they need is a LAND BEFORE TIME crossover.
Shrek 19 Land before Time 36: Shrek's and the Brachoisaurus - zubi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Wow.. I cant wait for all the senseless advertising.
yippidy do. - blix797, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I think shrek might be going the way of the Land Before Time, as in an infinite amount of straight-to-video productions.
- taintedzodiac, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5“It’s a finite story, has been from the beginning and I think that’s part of its integrity, part of its strength..."
That I respect...but:
"...that we’re not thinking this up as we go,”
