- mark076h, on 06/20/2008, -1/+67Holy *****, they are making Dark Tower Movies?
- mikeruiz7, on 06/20/2008, -2/+53Hey, Hollywood, here's an idea for making a sure fire good movie out of what is already a good book: STICK TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL.
- trezeguet23, on 06/20/2008, -2/+46"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."
- durandtheman, on 06/20/2008, -3/+36I would rather a series on HBO or Showtime. The movie industry would horribly mutilate what I think is the best Fantasy Adventure series out there. It would be horrible to see 7 2 hour versions. The Dark Tower could easily be turned into a series. I hope they do that instead...
- MisterChirish, on 06/20/2008, -1/+19I think people forget that the Shawshank Redemption was a Stephen King story, and it was done very well. That said, I don't know if Darabont has the chops to pull off the Dark Tower.
Without a doubt, though, I agree with this writer - it's gotta be theatre, R-rated. I don't care how far along HBO has come, you can't possibly encompass the romantic brutality of these stories unless the violence is properly portrayed.
I do not aim with my eye;
He who aims with his eye has forgotten the face of his father.
I aim with my hand.
I do not shoot with my hand;
He who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I shoot with my mind.
I do not kill with my gun;
He who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart. - g33b33, on 06/20/2008, -0/+18Um, like Shawshank and Green Mile weren't "right"?
- Czechxican, on 06/20/2008, -5/+22All I have to say is: please don't turn out like The Stand. Greatest book King ever wrote, ***** made for T.V movie ever made.
- NextLust, on 06/20/2008, -1/+16Besides 'The Shining', Stephen King's horror books usually (as in more times than not) do not translate well to film/tv. Some things are probably better left on paper.
- smashingmonkey, on 06/20/2008, -0/+15If Lord of the Rings could end up a good movie, then this one has hope...
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 06/20/2008, -3/+18I want to believe.
- icurnvs, on 06/20/2008, -0/+14I just hope they don't forget the face of their father.
- SirFoxx, on 06/20/2008, -2/+16Josh Holloway is the only choice.
- SocialPoison, on 06/20/2008, -2/+16The Dark Tower isn't a horror book...
- mark076h, on 06/20/2008, -0/+12are you serious? the parts taking place in Rolands past are my favorite, along with lots of other people, there are alot of people that want Stephen King to make a stand alone book set entirely in Rolands world and tell the story of what happened etc..
- kickcows, on 06/20/2008, -2/+14Guys - come on. You KNOW these guys (Cuse and Lindelof) are die hard Dark Tower fans. If anyone were to make these movies RIGHT, it will be them.
- jbrand45, on 06/20/2008, -0/+11A fairly simple sentence, yet, taken within the context of the entire text, could not be more perfect an opener for such an epic tale.
When I read The Gunslinger for the first time, it was because I picked it up in a local bookstore, read that first line, and was intrigued. Not many books deliver potent opening lines any more. - jbrand45, on 06/20/2008, -0/+11They're all entwined together within the Wheel of Ka, which will forever roll.
- doublefelix, on 06/20/2008, -0/+11The Shining, Stand By Me, & The Shawshank Redemption are among my favorite movies. 1408 and The Mist were a couple of the more interesting horror movies to come out last year - not my favorite genre so I'm probably missing something.
- quesog, on 06/20/2008, -2/+13Blaine is a pain.
And I expect that any movies made would be equally painful. - Nickooo, on 06/20/2008, -0/+10After seeing Christian Bale in 3:10 to Yuma, I think he could be a pretty great Roland. Although he does seem a bit too young for my mental image of Roland.
- web2pointYo, on 06/20/2008, -0/+9Eyes of the Dragon anyone? hmm....huh? Flagg running up those stairs? "I'M COMING FOR YOU PETER!" or something like that. Gave me the willies when I read it.
- Deschain420, on 06/20/2008, -2/+10It we're ever lucky enough to see a Tower "film"...it'll be done in animation, likely on HBO.
Like Spawn, and that was the ***** back in the day. - MeltingIce, on 06/21/2008, -0/+8Thats exactly what I said when I saw this digg title, and holy ***** they better make them well or else I'll be pissed.
- Greatn3ss, on 06/20/2008, -0/+8Say thankya.
- Chongo, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7boy you said it.
King himself in his introductions to the books cites this opener as his favorite line he has written. I would agree with him.
I think what got me though was that I had read somewhere that Randall Flag was in it and then I started reading and realized that so many of his books are intertwined with the Dark Tower universe (or is it the other way around?) - Dumbledorito, on 06/20/2008, -8/+158. Skip over most of "Song of Susannah."
9. Rewrite Mordred's part: He's a nigh-pointless character.
10. Rewrite how Flagg ends up. His fate is unworthy of his character.
11. Get King to write an actual ending, perhaps the "rework" he says he might have planned; We already have a "Planet of the Apes" version of this wrap-up, and almost nobody liked it. - jbrand45, on 06/20/2008, -0/+7Wizard and Glass is my favorite book of the whole series, followed closely by The Gunslinger. Seeing how things used to be for Roland puts a more tragic twist on the entire story.
- g33b33, on 06/20/2008, -1/+7and Shawshank / Green Mile as i said above.
- TiggyThaiMein, on 06/20/2008, -1/+7Who plays Stephen King?
Steve Buscemi, who else?? - mablung, on 06/21/2008, -0/+6The Dark Tower is the center of everything. All of his books revolve around it.
- JustinHopewell, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5If you're referring to the ending that King warns you not to read, I was fairly satisfied with it. I mean, how are you going to please everyone who waited decades to find out what was in the Tower? Everything comes full-circle, but this time Roland has a chance to make everything right with Cuthbert's horn.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5That would mean a MUCH smaller budget, though. It's got to be done right, and a small budget won't cut it.
- WhiskeyTango, on 06/21/2008, -0/+5I honestly have to disagree with changing the ending. At first, I have to admit, I was dissapointed, but even kind himself said, he didnt want to write an ending. You can believe if he didn't want to write it, I didn't want to read it. Several days after I finished the last book though, I realised, I was STILL thinking about the ending, and what it meant for Roland. What it meant for ALL of the characters. I wasn't spoon fed a conclusion, and my imagination can go to work for years to come about what happens beyond those last few words. I could go on, but it would include spoilers, and I don't want to do that, I just wanted to make the point that, after some reflection (which I think a series that took an authors entire career to complete deserves), some of out out there don't believe it was a bad ending at all.
- rupaw, on 06/20/2008, -7/+12The first four books were pure genius. I loved The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands and Wizard and Glass!
Book 5 (Wolves of the Calla) was alright. Not bad but definitely not as good as the others.
Book 6 and 7 (Song of Susannah and The Dark Tower) spoiled it all. The biggest letdown in literature ever. Epic fail! If you don't believe me, read the reviews on amazon.com...
Stephen King knows that he blew it, he even admitted it in an interview. The best advice for the director of these movies: stop after book 5 or let Mr King rewrite the final two books.
I was so disgusted with the final two books, words fail me to describe how I felt after waiting all those years .... - mnky9800n, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5I'm guessing you never saw Bladerunner, or read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
- mrallen86, on 06/20/2008, -1/+6I ken.
- inactive, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4What perfect timing. I was just considering getting a tattoo of the Crimson King's Eye.
- spaceman84, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4Step 1: Start growing a batch of Clint Eastwood clones.
- MovieQuest, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4If they're going with star power, one or all of these:
Roland played by Clive Owen.
Susannah played by Angela Bassett.
Eddie Dean played by Edward Norton.
Not sure about Jake or what. Oy has got to be a mix of animatronic and CGI to succeed.
Oh and whoever takes control has to rewrite the last three books so that they don't suck.
I mean, the ending was okay, but everything leading up to it was pretty masturbatory and drawn-out compared to the other books. King kind of lost his way, wouldn't you say? Lots of buildup to Mordred, for a paltry battle that didn't amount to much afterward, etc.
Thoughts? - Tairnyn, on 06/21/2008, -0/+4There were quite a few hints throughout the series that foreshadowed the ending. The veracity with which so many wanted to rush to the end is arguably the entire point of the series and the source of frustration regarding the ending. You literally feel the main characters emotion, first hand. It's pure brilliance.
Stop and smell the roses, people. Read it again and enjoy the journey this time. - StabmasterArson, on 06/20/2008, -3/+7This sounds like a good idea but it isn't.
There is no way Hollywood could do this series justice.
So Hollywood...please...please...please don't.
I'm not sure of how much more raping my childhood memories can withstand.
PS - ***** CGI gophers. - toastjam, on 06/20/2008, -3/+7I liked Roland's fate in the ending... that seemed fitting.
Everything else about the ending, heck the last half of that book, just didn't seem right. His archnemesis, Walter, eaten by his bastard spider-spawn in half a page? And instead of a showdown with Walter, we get an absurd deus ex machina battle between the crimson king and some stupid kid with a pencil that shows up right at the end. Almost as bad as King writing himself into his own book. - Pandalemon, on 06/20/2008, -1/+5I found The Mist to be one of the most truly horrific horror films I've ever seen. The religious nuts and the ending were what did it. Kubrick's version of the Shining is too far from the book for me to put on a Stephen King movie list. A great film but as much like the original as the recent I Am Legend film.
I really hope the dark tower will get the attention it deserves ... even if King himself didn't quite do the same for the later novels. - babykicker, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3I agree a fight between Roland and the Crimson King would be cool, but the final ending has to stay. The way Roland is sent back and has to repeat everything fits right into the universe and felt right, imo.
- smek2, on 06/21/2008, -0/+3I my opinion one of Kinfs best works. I fear for the worst thinking about a movie adaption though.
- ZenMojo, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3People digg you down, but this is the smartest thing I've heard in this thread.
- tardusted, on 06/20/2008, -0/+3umm...
misery?
green mile?
the shining?
carrie?
shawshank?
even 1408 wasn't that bad... - decker12, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4This is silly.. the Dark Tower is a great piece of fiction, but it's no Lord of the Rings, and look how much trouble those movies had being made. I love the books and I'm a huge Stephen King fan, but both Song of Susannah and Wolves of the Calla were WAY too long for what actually transpired in them. The coincidences in SoS were sickening to me - King brought back every single bit player from Drawing and Waste Lands and gave them some monumental part in the story.
