Seven Things We Want From Iron Man 2
thedeadbolt.com — With the pedestal that Iron Man has been put on, the question is can Iron Man 2 match the pattern of the second Spider-Man and X-Men movie and actually surpass the expectations that have been set before anyone's even started writing it? We hope so. How? Let us light the way my iron-clad friends...

- greenvortex, on 05/15/2008, -40/+19The biggest one on this list is the need for a stylistic world. Iron Man looked too much like a generic drama with a few CGI set pieces jarringly thrown in. The production design was uninspired. Also, the fight sequences were too stagebound and stiff. Quick-cutting can definitely go too far and ruin an action sequence (Batman Begins fight scenes?) but still, the action in Transformers and Speed Racer definitely got the adrenaline going in a way that Iron Man never matched. He flies, but he never soars.
- SuperWinner, on 05/15/2008, -18/+3Relying too heavily on CGI caused a few things to suck about Iron Man. For starters, the technology looked like it was from 300 years in the future instead of something that we might actually have in 10 or 20 years. Secondly, I'm reasonably sure they used CGI for the suit in all shots, this meant they never did build a real suit which made it seem more like a CGI prop, which it sadly was.
- adam99, on 05/15/2008, -0/+23Doh! Looks like you lose - they built a real suit, but it couldn't deliver the full range of motion they wanted, so they put elements of CGI in it. In fact, Favreau once asked them to tweak the cgi in a scene to make it more realistic, upon which the CGI guys informed him that the suit he was talking about was the "practical", or real suit.
- guyincognitoo, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5Downey wore parts of the actual suit over his motion capture suit to provide more realistic motions.

- AdvancedSoul, on 05/15/2008, -5/+30The Camera was horrible in Transformers, it was impossible to tell what was going during action scenes.
- bigbadgoat, on 05/15/2008, -6/+9That was the point. To add to the panic.
- badjoke, on 05/15/2008, -1/+11Let's call the "the Borne effect."
- feshmania, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4or the Saving Private Ryan effect
Matt Damon, you've cursed us with shaky cameras!- lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1the difference being in both of those movies; they were good. Look, im a fanboy with the best of them, but do not, DO NOT compare the transformers movie with a good one.
- feshmania, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4or the Saving Private Ryan effect
- ErrorS, on 05/15/2008, -3/+4Worst part of an otherwise awesome (but not to be taken too seriously) movie. I can't stand that zoomed in, pan & scan *****. It gives me a headache and it's too hard to follow
- funkytaco, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Agreed. Why is everyone digging down people complaining about the shaky cameras?
See the epic battle in Serenity to see how shaky camera should be used to enhance the experience and not to get away with poor CGI. - lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1... no. pan and scan is post widescreen to small screen... you are confused.
- funkytaco, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Agreed. Why is everyone digging down people complaining about the shaky cameras?
- R34C7, on 05/15/2008, -1/+38Realize that you just made the suggestion to alter one of the best movies of the year in the image of two vastly inferior films. One of the major benefits of this movie is that instead of relying completely on action and design as the entire industry has been doing, it made the action a complimentary piece of a great script rather than diluting it in favor of flashy graphics and mind numbing action.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7he also attacked batman begins... "I want more crap movies, less good ones!"
- ilikechaitea, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2dude you're totally right....haven't read the actual story yet, but I'm hoping they keep concentrating on who Iron man is, and just give Robert D. Junior plenty of great material and substance....which as we saw, he can works really well with
- sanman, on 05/15/2008, -8/+2Well, when you look at the trailers for Batman Begins, they look cool. What if Iron Man 2 could be filmed in a similarly epic style?
Anyway, I really liked that John Favreau interview where he says that once the first movie is a hit, then you don't have to fight the battles over budget and casting, since the bigwigs already know it's a moneymaker, and they'll back you fully.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gvQ4fc6Miw- dagamer34, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6The biggest problem you get when movies are fully financially backed is that they use a ***** of almost unnecessary CGI to drive up the cost of the film. Thus, when the 2nd and 3rd movies in the series do "ok", it's considered a disappointment compared to the first. And the sad thing is that this ALWAYS happens in movies.
I really cannot remember the last time when the 3rd part of a trilogy was considered to be the best. Typically you see in order of greatness: 1 > 2 > 3, and on occasion 2 > 1 > 3, but almost never 3 > 2 > 1 or even weirder 3 > 1 > 2. I would really like to see a series that's 3 > 2 > 1 that isn't just the same actual story split into 3 movies (i.e. The Lord of the Rings films were filmed concurrently and thus cannot count).- sanman, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5Okay, but I think Favreau's style seems to be different, and you didn't see a massive amount CGI in Iron Man. But what was shown was very good quality. What I liked was that you saw some wonderful character acting, and that seems to cater to the strengths of both director and cast. But hey, I do wanna see War Machine kick some ass in this next one.
I'd also like to see Stark's bon vivant flaws re-emerge, since he's an interestingly flawed hero (anti-hero?). And maybe Pepper would get hurt in the process.
Then in the 3rd movie, Pepper would marry Happy Hogan on the rebound, and that would devastate Tony and cause him to hit the bottle. Then we'd delve into the Demon in the Bottle story, while Rhodey fills Stark's shoes. - ErrorS, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1Indiana Jones 3 was my favorite.. as for quality, it was at least on par with the first two.
I agree with most of what you said though, this and LOTR are the only two that had great third movies.. and yes, , I know, indiana jones isnt technically a trilogy anymore - funkytaco, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1LoTR?

- SpencerMc, on 05/15/2008, -1/+19I'm trying to figure out if the fact that you just implied that Speed Racer and Transformers were in any way, shape, or form superior to Batman Begins or Iron Man is, in fact, a troll.
- PoSSeSSeDCoW, on 05/15/2008, -6/+6Yes, having a different opinion makes that person a troll. Riiight.

10. War Machine "hinted at the movie with Col Rhodes"
09. The Hulk (Avenger)
08. WASP (Avenger)
07. Scarlet
06. Sam Jackson
05. The Ten Rings
04. Capt "flipin" America
03. Wolverine (cameo)
02. FF4 (cameo)
01. Muther ***** THOR! (Avenger)- funkytaco, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2The last time i really liked Brad Pitt was Fight Club. He needs to beef up again and do Thor.
Disregard all the gay innuendo in that statement because I'm not gay.

- ender3456, on 05/15/2008, -17/+15Captain America was hinted at to!!!!! check it! http://www.geektyrant.com/2008/05/is-that-captain- ...
- SpencerMc, on 05/15/2008, -5/+10Yeah...that kind of retarded. You're grasping at straws.
- joe122370, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7it was confirmed by Marvel that it was Cap's shield
- SpencerMc, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Psh, yeah, by an "insider at Marvel". Unless there's a name attached, I'm still saying you're grasping at straws.
- ender3456, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Yeah your right and that wasn't Nick Fury at the end of the movie either and They didn't give a nod to War machine either. Marvel isn't trying to conect their Universe together at all.
- joe122370, on 05/15/2008, -0/+7it was confirmed by Marvel that it was Cap's shield
- seth123qq, on 05/15/2008, -3/+5i agree with spencermc, your looking too hard. just wait for it, if it comes out then it comes out and no secret signal in a diffrent movie will change that
- supermanred, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Nope, confirmed by Marvel. It's cap's shield.
- uiguy3, on 05/16/2008, -0/+2I thought it was Morpheus (Lawerence Fishbourne) at the end of the movie and not Samuel L. Jackson (until Jackson showed his face). I wish it had been.
- SpencerMc, on 05/15/2008, -5/+10Yeah...that kind of retarded. You're grasping at straws.
- DeepFriedFetus, on 05/15/2008, -29/+21Needs a better score...I really did not like the hard rock ***** in the film. It's better to go orchestral, it'll age better.
- SuperWinner, on 05/15/2008, -0/+11So yer sayin Ghostbusters II didn't age well???
- supermanred, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Other than the title song, no...the music did not age well.
- RMSzero, on 05/15/2008, -0/+9Yeah, they'd better radically change the unique feel of the budding franchise right after it proves incredibly successful and acclaimed. Good plan.
- iPirate, on 05/15/2008, -1/+10Although I agree with the thought... you're just regurgitating what you heard on TRS.
- MasterGrief, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5I love the dramatic and orchestral music of blockbuster films, but it was very refreshing to see a movie that didn't have it. Besides that, great rock never dies. It just gets a little... Dusty.
- SwankRock3000, on 05/15/2008, -1/+6Its not like they put in some flavor of the week Vampire Weekend song on there. Most if not all of the songs they went with are already "aged" (ACDC, the obvious Black Sabbath, ect.) and already aren't of the timeframe in which the movie took place.
- mnky9800n, on 05/15/2008, -1/+0You do realize thats how all of Iron Man has been in media other than comic books?
- HaloZero, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1it's a fricking superhero movie, who the hell cares how well it ages. Iron Man will probalby go through like 5 retcons by the time the next Iron Man franchise comes out.
- luet, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5The only problem I had with the score was I thought there were some pieces that were not needed. Epic flying portions of the movie did not need *chugachugachuga* along with it. I honestly would've preferred LESS music, which is odd for me. Ambient noise is enough for iron man.
- Amadeus2490, on 05/15/2008, -4/+1As a musician, I had to complain about the score too; I thought the orchestral themes - especially over the credits - were so generic and forgettable. It definitely didn't sound as good as the score to say. . .Spider-man. I really wished Tony Stark/Iron Man would have had a strong orchestral theme.
. . .Oh, and that he wouldn't have revealed that he was Iron-man!!!

- Gizza, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3I think it need MORE Black Sabbath. That song rocks.
- supermanred, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Yeah, when he first burst out of the Aghani prison they should have cued up "iron man" by black sabbath like they did in the trailer, it would have been a kick-ass 3 minutes.
- SuperWinner, on 05/15/2008, -0/+11So yer sayin Ghostbusters II didn't age well???

How about Titanium Man? That allows you to get into alien invasion, etc, which could be done in a very epic way, with Iron Man fighting them off.
PS: Anyone seen the new Hulk videogame?
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/33935.html- IrwinFletcher, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Crimson Dynamo was updated in "The Ultimates" from a Soviet to a Chinese creation. Since it's been established that Stane sold weapons technology to both sides, it could be written that he shared data from the Iron Monger project with Bejing.

Magic versus technology! Throw in some references to outsourcing and cheap manufacturing, and consider it done.- johnnysaucepn, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Mandarin originally was technology-based, his rings were taken from an alien ship. No need for magic to be literally involved, although he could use the idea of magic to control his superstitious followers.
- feedroh, on 05/15/2008, -0/+4It'll probably be Mandarin.. they already set it up with the Ten Rings terrorist organization.

- Xihix, on 05/15/2008, -1/+26No... I believe Nick Fury being at the very end was just an opener to the Avengers. Having him in Iron Man 2 would be weird, considering he wasn't really part of the main story of the first movie. Meh, I dunno.
- jon30041, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Yeah.... some slight correspondence would be good, but a major part would be too strained or something... cameos still, while Stark preps for the Avengers. Maybe he's clearing stuff out of his closet?

- ouzome, on 05/15/2008, -1/+3But hasn't Tony been one of the superheros who has despised Nick the most? That's what i remember and if so it only makes sense for Nick to be bossing Tony around and him getting pissed off and leaving.

- sandbags, on 05/15/2008, -1/+0your wrong. Thats why this movie was so good. Its a pretty close retelling of the story.
- wtfheadexplody, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Stark and Fury were associates. Stark introduced Fury to SHIELD (the group that covers up Iron Man for Stark at the end of the movie). Fury becomes the head of SHIELD, and they boss around the super-heroes a lot.

- PoSSeSSeDCoW, on 05/15/2008, -2/+37Needs more real fight scenes. I don't want this "suit is running out of power" *****. Let the final fight be a fight, not just Iron Man running away.
- ZenMojo, on 05/15/2008, -4/+4It was a real fight scene. Iron Monger kicked his ass and broke it off sideways.
- Jan33, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8Nono he's right he's right - lets go all out! Lets see what that thing can really dole out and handle in a total combat zone - itd be all BOOOM and WHOOOSHH

- ColorBlind, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2You can't unleash the ultimate battle scene in the first movie....that's a poor business model.
- ajadoniz, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2dude, the suit was in the early stages. the next movie will be suit version 3.0
- Duggan360, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2He only ran out of power cause Mr.Masive Shiney Head took his generator which was designed to keep him alive and the suit running, Where the original didn't have enough power to run the suit
- MaddieCakes, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1See, what I don't get, is how the generator on his suit that was supposed to be powering his heart, too, is supposed to be mega-powerful and like... how did they put it in the movie? Power an entire city for 50 years or something? How did the power get low?
- SPThom, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1It coud power his heart for 50 years (or 500)... "or something really big for 15 minutes."
The second model was far more powerful, but Stane was using it in the Monger suit.
- SPThom, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1It coud power his heart for 50 years (or 500)... "or something really big for 15 minutes."
- Asheis, on 05/15/2008, -8/+4Iron Man 1 was cool, I can't wait to see what they do for IM2! I think many of these points are more than valid... give us an edgier, cooler stark!
- wtfheadexplody, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5Stark was pretty ***** edgy and cool throughout the entire movie.
- supermanred, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Im pretty sure Iron Man 2 will give you a more incoherent, drunk Tony Stark... Eventually Stark loses everything and ends up a drunk on the street.
- sonicularulus, on 05/15/2008, -8/+5id want to see a notice before the credit rolls, letting us know if there's a bonus scene at the end or not
- LanceWindu, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5Or you could do like I do and wait until the end of the credits for every movie just to see if there is anything left there for us.
- daizaru, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3These days you can pretty much expect it.
- newbill123, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1The biggest clue about post-credit scenes is the music playing with the credits.
Dramatic final scene music -> Energetic Credits Start -> Softened Orchestral Music -> ?
If there is a post-credits scene the music stays soft.
If they want to get your attention, they'll be cranking up the energy as the credits go on.
- fadetoone, on 05/15/2008, -0/+26I'll just be happy with War Machine.

- Amadeus2490, on 05/15/2008, -0/+2Robert Downey Jr. Said that he has creative input on the second movie, and that he wants it to deal with Tony Stark's alcoholism. They hint at it by showing him drinking all the time in the first movie.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2they dance around it.
- jiggawoot, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2I believe alcoholism is covered thoroughly by myself reading these comments at 11pm after too many beers to think properly. Oh yeah, the movie. Good show. Needs some more capital knockers.
- TritonVision, on 05/15/2008, -2/+2I believe that's #5 on the list.
- ansatsu29, on 05/15/2008, -1/+7Robert Downey really did great as Iron Man....he's so gooooooddddd!....And I agree with one of the quotes from the review...Robert and Gwyneth have a good chemistry in the film which I believe, even outmatches Peter and Maryjane tandem in the Spidey flicks...And what's great about superhero movies nowadays, they tie in the superhuman with the reality of this world...like the Batman films done by Chris Nolan...Its so freaking good...and have the excellent artistic treatment than the previous batman films..(heck, i'll bury those old "pop-py" batman flicks..they really suck!)...More superhero films with this kind of caliber....Kudos to Robert Downey and John Favreu for a job well done!
- rabidsquirrelOG, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Mary Jane and Peter's chemistry (None) were no match for Robert and Gwyneth's great chemistry.

this guy need to learn how to hit the enter key.
Iron Man was awesome. I'd have liked more nudity, maybe a special scene at the end where gwynneth and that reporter chick dyke it out.
that evil dude was awesome btw.- H0tKarl, on 05/15/2008, -2/+4I would definitely order my popcorn with extra butter for that.
- HaMMeReD, on 05/15/2008, -0/+11By evil dude, you mean THE dude right?
- awtripp, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5why bury him, he's just making the obadiah stane = jeff bridges = The Dude (Jeff Lebowski).
All he wanted was a new carpet.
- awtripp, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5why bury him, he's just making the obadiah stane = jeff bridges = The Dude (Jeff Lebowski).
- trixterIreland, on 05/15/2008, -9/+4I generally dont like to compare DC (batman, superman) for Marvel (xmen, fantastic 4, spiderman, hulk, blade, etc). The stories and all behind them are different enough that just grouping them all together makes it harder.
I do think that iron man was more like a TV pilot than anything else, it didnt have as much 'unf' as other marvel movies. It is generally not good when a sequel starts with a lackluster part I. I do not have much faith in part 2, generally I think though that the first one could have been made better with a different director and editor. I think that downey tends to play the character reasonably well, but that it became a little flat largely becuase of the directors influence.
As for captn america and others, yeah it seems that all the marvel movies from the 70s are going to be redone with a couple extras. Not bad for a company that was $7M in the hole, had no writers, and was in bankruptcy not that long ago (ok like 10 years ago when Xmen first came out that cleared them of a lot of debt and other stuff).- nickvdk, on 05/15/2008, -2/+0Dont know why ppl are burying you. I 100% agree with you. Downey was great but the storyline was too straightforward without any serious twists. The movie felt like it was short of money so they decided to skip on creating an epic movie e.g. Transformers, Batman. The supporting cast were great, dialogue was good but it was poorly put together imho. The movie is not bad, just average. Dont understand where the hype is coming from.
- wtfheadexplody, on 05/15/2008, -1/+2Well it was the first movie, and they wanted to tie the character's development from a regular guy to the superhero with reality. Then again Fantastic 4 used that same excuse for why the first one sucked, then the second one wasn't much better.
Either way I thoroughly enjoyed Iron Man and am looking forwards for the planned sequels.- Di0genes, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1Nobody relevant is saying Iron Man sucked. These guys are just grasping at straws.
- evildeadxsp, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1i've always thought Iron Man would be an awesome television show today. Marvel could've made more money from a TV deal too. And Tony Stark is a deep enough, anti-hero, likable character that I think he would do well on a top network (NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC). And it's not like the writers would run out of storylines.
dammit marvel, i want a licensed comic book television series with the budget that ABC commits to Lost or NBC commits to Heroes!!!!
- Pateep, on 05/15/2008, -9/+4For it not to be made?
- brownr21, on 05/15/2008, -3/+2Kill yourself.
- D3koy, on 05/15/2008, -3/+11I'd like a catchy title, like "Iron Man 2: Iron Maner"
- Boing, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1I came in here solely to post "more boobs", but instead I'm just digging up iamstig.
- HaloZero, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5I have to disagree about the whole SHIELD thing. Iron Man + SHIELD is just screaming out Avengers. Though, giving more subtle hints about other Super heroes that exist in the world, which would give us hints on what the Avengers lineup is going to be.
- ZenMojo, on 05/15/2008, -0/+11I keep rooting for Dead Bolt not to disappoint me, but they're making it really hard.
P.S. -- The Dude was awesome as Obadiah Stane.- sandbags, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1the dude abides
- shauncorleone, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Tony Stark .. treats objects like women, man!
- HydrogenOxide, on 05/15/2008, -2/+1** Jeff Bridges
- Mylf, on 05/15/2008, -0/+8Robert Downey Jr. really surprised me on this one. He's perfect as Tony Stark. For the sequel, I wonder if they'll have him go up against the Mandarin.
- H0tKarl, on 05/15/2008, -0/+3Or even better, the Monarch.
- paidhima, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1I was puzzled at first when they said Robert Downey Jr. Then I recalled the movies I've seen him in, and it all made sense. That was a genius bit of casting there.
- marcduke, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1That's the rumor Mylf - Mandarin. That's supposed to be the reason for all the rings throughout the movie - i.e. the name of the Terrorist group, most of the characters have rings on and make them obvious to see. This might be grasping at straws but Tony even has a "ring" on the side of his neck after one of the battles.
- mnky9800n, on 05/15/2008, -1/+8I can't believe no one said they wanted The Mandarin as the bad guy in the next film. Iron Man is by far the best super hero movie so far, I've already seen it twice! Better the second time. I could see it one more time. I definitely want the Mandarin to be the bad guy. I would also want to see Titanium Man as the bad guy but I don't see how that would work since he was a Soviet construct. However, The Mandarin was quite the Viet Cong baddie himself.
- feedroh, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1They already set up Mandarin in the first movie. The terrorist organization's name was "Ten Rings".
- mnky9800n, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0Well of course but will he show up in the next movie? We will have to wait to find out. Perhaps he is behind the Ten Rings organization. Who knows.
- bwizard, on 05/15/2008, -7/+2You have to be somewhat retarded to think Iron Man is good.
- shadeOfGrey, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1I honestly hope they stay away from the Mandarin. They've done such a good job setting up the realistic, believable Iron Man Universe, I don't want to have to watch an evil villain with "magic powers".
I know Mandarin is like Iron Man's main enemy, but he always seemed too goofy to be taken seriously.- mnky9800n, on 05/19/2008, -0/+0It's not magic powers. It is alien technology. And Iron Man is anything but realistic. Please explain to me how repulsor technology works.
- feedroh, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1They already set up Mandarin in the first movie. The terrorist organization's name was "Ten Rings".
- elmontsmilitia, on 05/15/2008, -1/+4isnt the Samuel L. Jackson cameo for the Avengers movie and not Iron Man 2, the guy will be disappointed when he realizes that.
- awtripp, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1its true; also, if you look in the Ultimates comic books, they say Nick Fury is modeled after Samuel Jackson. So, I guess he was pretty much already picked for it.
They're doing a couple other movies for Avengers characters before they do the that movie, so they can bring them all together. I.e. Captain America movie, a Thor movie, etc

- Admut239, on 05/15/2008, -0/+6I thought they did a good job of bringing in "real world" elements. He lived in Malibu, had a fight on Olympic Blvd. in West LA and then fell to the ground in Westwood (when he froze in the sky). There were even a few more LA spots in the movie.
- ElGanyan, on 05/15/2008, -1/+1The Santa Monica peer and ferris wheel too.
Maybe having lived near L.A. for a big part of my life made these things more obvious, but I felt it to be very real world as well.

- JGUSMC7, on 05/15/2008, -2/+5I can do Iron Man 2 without Samuel Jackson...please just add him to some piece of crap spinoff and leave the Iron Man movies alone.

- marx2k, on 05/15/2008, -6/+2Meh... didn't even bother with seeing Iron Man... it feels like producers are scraping the bottom of the barrel now with comic book hero movie crossovers
- jeffinfremont, on 05/15/2008, -0/+5Let me guess...you also don't own a television and like to point it out as often as possible.

Granted I'm not a comic book reader, and maybe you have to be to get why the cheesiest movie of the year is so "absolutely extraordinary." But come on! I couldn't finish the article. Calling Gweneth Paltrow's paltry work some of the best in her career is an insult to her! Saying the EXTREMELY cheesy line at the end was one of the best closers in comic book history... somebody is drunk!
So please lay off the crack pipe... I was hoping the list would include things like, "1. Provide a little wine with that CHEESE" Oh well...
no digg- rabidsquirrelOG, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1So, you just 'read' a review, and didn't actually see the movie? Please clarify. Because if you didn't see the movie, why are you here?
