- Smoktiludy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Serenity rocked. I went Friday night with a couple other people and everyone had a good time at it. Go see it, you'll like it.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2" I loved firefly but serenity can't compare to 8 episodes"
14 episodes, actually. how much money a movie makes has nothing to do with its quality. that movie where vin diesel was a babysitter made huge amounts of money, and it was about vin diesel being a babysitter. - hosvos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think its 1/5 but your right Yotto, and alot of people "think it looks horrible" I had 10 friends see it with me that didnt give a monkey ***** about firefly, and everyone like it. But think about movies like The Island. 120mil to make, 20 mil returned.
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Really? "They" know those "estimated" number on a Sunday morning of the opening weekend? The page also forgets to include that it is the number two movie for the weekend, behind "Flightplan".
Come back Tuesday - there might actually be some news here.
Better news over at www.thehollywoodreporter.com ... - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"drahknon, you're probably much happier seeing Serenity do poorly at the box office than if it had been a huge hit."
Nope, not a bit. It means it probably won't get the sequel it deserves.
"In this case, you can claim you're far superior to those common peons who enjoy less intellectually stimulating material like the wonderful Serenity."
Apparently I've hit a nerve with you. For that, I apologize. Please feel free to enjoy all the intellectually bankrupt, violent for the sake of it, fart-joke-loving, pretty flashing lights and bauble shows that you wish. I certainly won't stand in your way.
"Intellectually, it's on the same level as N'Sync and Deuce Bigalow."
That's absolutely true, excepting the wit, charm and emotionally engaging qualities of Serenity.
"Tastes may differ but watching Serenity does not mean you're smart."
I never said it did. Entertainment is like food. Sometimes you want filet mignon. Sometimes you want a Big Mac. And there's nothing wrong with healthy shares of each. Unfortunately, the majority of what's in the offing these days is a seemingly endless parade of Big Mac quality entertainment. The industry says it's all people want, but I don't think that's true. I believe that people both want and deserve better than the lowest common denominator.
That's not to say that Serenity is necessarily the filet mignon of cinema, but by any objective measure (writing, sound, acting, etc.), it offers more than a lot of what's out there.
"Try reading a book you moron."
For someone hellbent on flaming _me_ for being elitist... this is the most bizarre parting shot you could have made. - omnithrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I give the movie an 8/10 for the entertainment value but the name has to be the worst ever in an sci-fi movie. "
It's named after Serenity Valley.
Watch the series sometime. - Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This was a funny moive and I'm glad they made it. And this will get people to rent the DVD.
- hosvos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Instead trashing it, see it for your self, and maybe you wont be so negative toward it.
--A Proud Brown Coat - omnithrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Considering the movie only cost $40 to make, I think your conclusion isn't the most sound thing I've ever seen.
No digg.
Great movie. - enigma630, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i haven't seen it yet. beside the fact that i was busy all weekend moving furniture, i coundn't go see it. the closest theature playing it is an hour out of town and i'm not going that far to see a movie.
- pdavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw it, loved it, recommend it!
- ZarZax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My god I love this movie! I was worried what they would do to the series if they made this movie.. but after seeing it I am MORE than impressed..
- lafingputz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The movie was kick ass. The casting was great, the writing was great, the plot was great, the sets where great, the CG was great...long story short...it was a great movie (for lack of a better word). I've been a die-hard fan of the show for a long time, and this movie made my millennium.
- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO DIGG. The flamebait in the headline and opening comments is terrible.
And the movie was very good. 'nuff said. - acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0After looking again, flightplan actually had 9 screenings today, so did corpse bride, to serenity's 4. Flightplan played in 3424 theaters and serenity played in 2188. Flight plan grossed $4,391 per theater while serenity grossed $4,634 per theater. Serenity actually did BETTER then every other movie this weekend per theater (except a history of violence which is limited). Also, a lot of ppl are turned off by sci fi so maybe word will spread about it and more ppl will see it next weekend. Anyway, it was a slow weekend for movies all around, so it is doing very well.
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Awesome movie!!!!
- Yotto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Instead of thinking of it as $10 million, how about thinking of it as 1/4 the cost to make it? How does that relate to other movies?
- Permanent4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's be real, folks. Serenity only grossed $10 million because it had zero star power. Arguably the best-known actor in this movie was in the supporting cast of Barney Miller. "The man who brought you Buffy the Vampire Slayer now brings you a unique vision of the future filled with no-name actors."
Replace Nathan Fillion with, say, Hugh Jackman or Matthew McConaughey, and first-week box office is $24 million. I'm not saying that's right, but that's the way things are when it comes to big commercial movies. Serenity will do very well on DVD, but box office will suffer for the movie's lack of star power. - Incognito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You Serenity homers are missing the point.
I saw the movie too and I liked it, but lets be real, 10 million is crap opening weekend, especially when you have NO COMPETITION.
He should go back to T.V, he basically compressed the second season into that movie, and we lost out on all that content. - treeshouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While I wouldn't call $10m crap when it put Serenity in second place, I do agree that the movie could have been fantastic as a second season, or just the finish of the first season. And I also agree that this should get put back on TV. A movie every couple of years is too long to wait between fixes.
I also heard Joss say that the non-compete is bunk. There is audio of him at Dragon Con on The Signal podcast. Straight from the horse's mouth.
I saw Serenity twice last weekend and will go again this weekend. Every time I see it I catch something I missed the last time around. How long does it take for them to release a DVD after a movie is released? I can't wait. - TurboDerek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Joss Whedon stories are not good for movies. he needs time to develop characters. I loved firefly but serenity can't compare to 8 episodes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1hey, i thought it was a good movie
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this movie has a fantastic user rating on IMDB
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The real test is how it does overseas and on DVD.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm.. Probably only $10M because it's focused at exactly the kind of people who bittorrent this kinda stuff.
- beast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+210 million is exactly what is was projected to make on opening weekend. You should check your facts before posting crap like this.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Read the other information on the linked page...
Grade = A-
A's = 87%
Pretty darn good when you consider most of the crap that was released this year! Can't wait to see it myself. - TigerClaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even if the movie is number 2 at the box office, It doesn't mean they won't do a sequel, The fact it made to the top 5, Would surely guarantee sequels to come.
- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too bad he signed the "non compete clause" that wont allow him to do another firefly tv show for another 8yrs...on any network.
i dont know much about this whedon guy,but I loved the show and movie. - iamtheshow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shiny
- slackerdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Err.. folks. 10Mil for the weekend makes it number two overall. That doesn't suck.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2005&wknd=39&p=.htm - geedeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's really poorly chosen commentary in the title. It's the momentum that Joss cares about.
- SUPERTOY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's named after Serenity Valley.
Watch the series sometime."
Actually the movie is named after the ship, and the ship is named Serenity because of what happened in Serenity Valley.
Furthermore. I liked this movie so much Im going to see it again, and Im making all my friends that dont know any better come with me. If this movie doesnt get a sequel Im gonna be pissed, because it deserves it. - Saberj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only $10 million. 2nd place. The crew were claiming it would take $80million world wide for a sequel. I doubt they will have a problem achieving that.
- Norelec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK...too many damn posts to read through. I just have a few things to throw in.
One, Whedon made this movie for the fans...The people that supported the show after it was canceled. The Television show was poorly advertised and raped to hell by the networks, they didn't even show it in order(the pilot and first episode we not shown first)
Two, There was SOOOOOO much more story to tell, but not enough time. Whedon decided he would focus on Rivers story.
"Need I remind you that this guy knows no more than the drunk down the street. The movie was awesome and there will be a sequel."
Sorry, no sequel...There is a bit of foreshadowing when that one guy(dont want to ruin anything for anyone) says "There's nothing left to see" If there is a sequel or new series from this I will be VERY VERY surprised.
Now for what I thought about the movie, I loved it. The action was great, the story was great(Keep in mind though that I saw the TV series too). It had a good mix of action, drama, and comedy. Just as all of Joss Whedons Films/Series do. It is sad to see it in a summed up version, I would have loved to see how far into the story the series would have went. Like, who is Shepard Book...really? Also a bit more into the romantic side of Enara(sp?) and Mal...soo much left to the imagination...But, I give the movie a 9.5 out of 10 - honeycut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0serenity will bomb here in Australia. Firefly never aired here so most people have never heard of it.
I sourced the tv show via other means so I had a clue - unlike the people sitting next to me.
Serenity was made for a fraction of the cost of your average sci-fi blockbuster so I guess it doesn't really have to make as much at the box office to be a viable venture. - whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah the previews look lame, but every geek is hyped up about it so I guess I'll see it...
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0serenity now?. I wait to it comes out on dvd.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it only grossed 10 million but if you put it into perspective it was the #2 movie at the box office.
- bryan314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simple explanation. Our local theater isn't carrying it, they're still showing Dukes of Hazard. I had to drive and hour to one of the, rape you on prices, megaplexs to see it. Liked the movie, theater was packed and people clapped at the end. What more can you say?
- awesinine, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1I've never seen the show and I wasn't expecting much when I walked in the theater.
Serenity was hands down the BEST scifi of the year (sorry star wars), and probably the best scifi I've seen in as long as I can remember. The story was elegantly written, the acting was above par, the characters were AMAZING. I definitely plan on buying the dvd's now (and I'm sorry I ignored the show while it was on).
Incidentally,
10,million dollars is about a million tickets. if a third of those people end up buying the dvds then that's 300,000 x $40 made off the movie that isn't considered part of the "gross". I imagine the dvd's will sell much better after the movie though! It's almost like they could use the movie as an advertisement for the dvds! - Namingishard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0who really cares how much money it made, Firefly was an awesome show and im sure the movie is just as good, goin tomm i hope
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It could have been marketed a wee bit better IMO... I mean, I saw one of the trailers, and I do mean *ONE* of them, in the entire time leading up to the release. Didn't even see the TV show referenced in the ad. That would be like making a movie based on CSI and calling it "Reports," and making no mention of the fact that it's based on CSI. Firefly was already a bit of an underground series (pretty much any sci-fi series that doesn't have Star Trek on it is going to get that status, Battlestar Galactica being the exception), so just assuming that people who immediately realize the connection was folly on the part of the marketing geniuses.
- acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw the movie today, and I have to say, it was ***** AMAZING!!! Anyway, if you look, the #1 movie was flightplan (??? never even heard of it) and made 15mil, while serenity made a close 10 and corpse bride made 9. At my theater today, flightplan had 5 screenings, while serenity had 4. That most likely will be across the board (I live in nyc), so extra screenings = extra money. Once it hits dvd it will make a ton tho.
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It should be said, first, that popularity is not necessarily an indication of quality. N'Snyc has sold how many albums?
That said, I'll never understand the heaving throngs of pop culture connoisseurs and marketers. A well-written, well-executed film like Serenity has a mediocre box office take, but dreck like Deuce Bigalow gets a sequel?
I suppose Mencken was right: "No one in this world has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people." - omnithrope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0er, $40 MILLION.
- CoSMoSYS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought this movie was great...hopefully it does well enough to produce another TV series
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can give you the thoughts of someone who never saw the tv show but just saw the movie. Overall, it was ok, not great but entertaining. The assasin and the captain both seemed like well flushed out characters but the rest seem very cookie cutter and one dimensional. The dialogue, though funny, seemed kinda wooden. Except for the climax it did seem like an extended tv show. It was a fun romp and entertaining. I doubt if anybody but firefly fans will remember this movie in a year or two.
- OrangeWhip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You know, scairborn, most movie theaters have matineee prices as well. We saw the movie for $6.50 instead of $9.25 by going an hour earlier. Heck, our theaters are running a promo for $5 on Tuesdays. I understand your gripe but there are always ways to see a movie for less.
- alexkidd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1when you consider it is playing at 1200 fewer theaters than Flightplan...10 million is pretty good.
