- WeirdEdsel, on 07/17/2009, -2/+40Why not make original films?
- supremenothing, on 07/17/2009, -1/+33How can a website dedicated to geekery be so dismissive of Ray Harryhausen's work in Clash Of The Titans? That's like going to church and talking bad about Jesus.
The CGI monsters might look nice on screen, but they won't have a fraction of the soul and character in Harryhausen's brilliant stop motion work. The man is to fantasy movies what the late Will Eisner is to comics. A legend. - spanky6256000, on 07/16/2009, -0/+25Clash of the Titans should be awesome.
- veloscaper, on 07/17/2009, -0/+18yes it does, but there was nothing wrong with the original Owl. He was cool.
- bigthree, on 07/16/2009, -0/+18I loved Clash in all it's horribleness!
- Bloodwine, on 07/17/2009, -0/+14Director Breck Eisner was quoted as saying, “you’ve got to throw away the 80s version of it…it’s about reinventing Flash.”
^^^ I don't know if he has heard, but the 80's Flash Gordon is pretty damn awesome. It's cheesy, but pretty awesome. I have doubts they could make such a fun movie like that today. Movies today are either too dumbass/lowbrow or take themselves too seriously.
The soundtrack alone makes Flash Gordon an enjoyable watch. - scarlettletter, on 07/16/2009, -0/+14Wait.... another Judge Dredd!
- sauron256, on 07/17/2009, -1/+12Buried for criticising Ray Harryhausen's special effects.
- loneraver, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9If they do what they did for Battlestar Galatica for Flash Gordon I'm be a happy man.
- browwiw, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9I like to believe that Alex Skarsgard got passed over for Thor because they want him to play Captain America. Please, God, don't let me down on the Captain America movie. It's all I got left.
- bci84, on 07/17/2009, -1/+10Yeah I love the original. Better special effects does not mean a better movie. Transformers 2 had incredible special effects and it was a piece of *****.
- SalmonGod, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9I'm a digital sculptor, and I see tributes to Harryhausen on a regular basis on places like ZBrushCentral. The guy is held in very high regard. Clash of the Titans was also a very cool experience when I was little (I'm 26). I can't believe they insulted the owl, because that was my favorite and the one creature that I would imagine standing the test of time.
I'm sure new CG will look cooler, but modern Hollywood dramatization has a high probability of butchering the flavor of the original in bad taste. - durnit, on 07/17/2009, -3/+11Actually, War of the Worlds was one of the better remakes in "recent" years (despite Tom Cruise).
73 on the Tomato meter; about $600 M worldwide. - IUAndar, on 07/17/2009, -1/+9I see nothing wrong with Judge Dredd. May not be sly's best movie, but it definitely is Rob Schneider's best.
"I can't break the law! I am the law!" or "Eat recycled food. It's good for the environment, and OK for you." - SalmonGod, on 07/17/2009, -1/+9Buried for insulting 3 movies that I really enjoyed, 2 that I loved. Flash Gordon and Clash of the Titans were awesome films, and War of the Worlds was good. I'm not against the remakes, but they won't be comparable to the originals. Flash Gordon especially just won't be the same without a soundtrack by Queen :D
- inkswamp, on 07/17/2009, -0/+8Okay, people bitched endlessly about the CG effects in the Star Wars prequels despite the fact that they one-upped the effects in the original films. And yet, now I people are excited about a remake of an existing film (Clash of the Titans) claiming it will be great because of CG effects compared to the effects in the originals. Huh.
And no, the remake of Flash Gordon will not unseat the original which was a perfect mix of serious and goofy which captures the spirit of those old serials and comics exactly. I'm betting the remake is going to be dead-serious and over-the-top dramatic like 300 but with laser guns. - OthoNoggle, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7I agree with you completely. The writer of the article seems to have the opinion that a remake of 'Clash' will be better partly because any CGI will be better than Harryhausen's work. And that's laughably untrue and wrongheaded.
Harryhausen was a genius. I don't know of any genius special effects artists working in CGI. I'm sure there are some; I see really great computer animation all the time. But Harryhausen was a legend. - Bloodwine, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8you cannot top John Carpenter's remake, though.
- Bloodwine, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6Clash of the Titans is a great movie. The special effects were pretty awesome for its time.
- sd2001, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7You can't be dugg enough, my friend.
- jezsik, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6Seriously, with all the fantastic comics and scifi stories out there, why the hell do they keep doing re-makes?
- appleofdischord, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6:/
I loved the original. - JoeBlackmon, on 07/16/2009, -0/+6It wouldn't take much to crush the original Judge Dredd movie. That is one movie I would really like to see done right.
- veloscaper, on 07/17/2009, -4/+9hopefully they don't screw up the ending like BG.
- pitchblack16, on 07/16/2009, -0/+5Ditto, didn't even know they were making a remake.
- bella2k, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5These look great, but what I'm REALLY waiting for is a remake of Logan's Run.
- Burrito, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Because in a recession, they only green light known brands.
- Alphateam, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4I would LOVE a Judge Death story.
- mbelrose, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Will there be Queen? Will there be Max Von Sydow? Will there be Brian Blessed? Unless they are keen to some sort of cloning technology, the remake will at best be almost as good as the original.
Unless they cast Nathan Fillion to play every character,
Yes, including the soundtrack. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4And...?
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4I liked Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd. Wasn't his best movie. But the problem was the rest of the film not the character imho.
- Atario, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3The movie, and the effects seem to have been very highly regarded at the time.

I'm guessing the author is a 22-year-old with no perspective -- show him anything black-and-white and he'll howl in derision. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3I dare you to watch it on a decent sound system and not want to shotgun that little girl in the throat just so she stops screaming.
- escottberg, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3"Have you seen the 1990 version? It can’t get any worse than that." so true.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3clash of the titats looks like the most promising...makes me wanna download the original right now!
- Koushiro, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Somehow I doubt the sound track for the remake of Flash Gordan will be as good as anything Queen ever wrote and performed.
- smacksaw, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2THANK YOU
Dated or not, I loved the effects. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2"Director" Breck Eisner couldn't "improve" on the Queen version of Flash Gordon if James Cameron wrote and directed it and handed the finished product to that hack to put his name on it. Have the lowest of expectations for that reboot.
- rblancarte, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2As soon as I saw they dumped on Clash of the Titans for the effects, this list was crap for me.
Ray Harryhausen was a genius and an artist. Clash of the Titans may not have been his best work (I love Jason and the Argonauts), but I would put it up against any CGI crap that is cranked out these days. - Sacrifice, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I partially agree, some original films should not be redone (The Karate Kid). However, it may be worth updating some special effect heavy classics with modern technology (Clash of the Titans). Granted, Hollywood doesn't always do it right.
- dgolding, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Flash rocked. It was never meant to be taken seriously - it was campy and funny, not dour and serious. And, might I add, Flash Saved Every One of Us!
Queen FTW - fanfablebig, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3They should have added The Thing. which i guess will be a remake of a remake.
- ivan423, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2The m65 jacket is the best.
- heytomkat, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2go away.
- malex, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2As awesome as 80's Flash was, I could watch something closer to the intent of the original.
Just because one likes Michael Keaton's Batman (or even Adam West's) that doesn't mean they can't appreciate Dark Knight. - SirLowKey, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Will there be the next Ornella Muti?
- bat-21, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2IS a genius. Ray's still alive.
- bluekangaroo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2They didn't mention throwing out the '70s "Flesh Gordon"
- hakkola, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2How is a new Dredd with a different story a remake?
- bluekangaroo, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2I still think they're going to have a tough time replacing Jenny Agutter.
