- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Damn dyslexia, I missed the key word:
It would be pretty crazy to replace the lead after the 2 (most likely 3) "Successful" films. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42Meh...it's no worse then them changing bond's actor every so often. Eventually actors just get too old to play the part or simply get tired of the part all together. No reason Toby should have to sign a life long contract of being spiderman.
- dn11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Raimi, screw this get on with Evil Dead 4 already
- BritishGolgo13, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Why does no one like him? I like him. Commence the onslaught of burying me.
- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Meh, how many different Bonds were there? And that franchise turned out pretty well. While people argue about who was the best Bond, they were mostly pretty good films. Mostly.
After 6 (or more, who knows) Spidey flicks, we may have people arguing about whether Maguire or Gyllenhaal was the better Spiderman.
- Damn you thetaoofbill, beat me to it. - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Tobey is only 32...
or in Holywood talk
Tobey can play 18-25
I don't think he's too old at all. Maybe he will be by spiderman 5 though. He'll play a 32-39 year old by then. - aresef, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Face it.
- omgitscolin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19NO.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Only if Lord Xenu gets the part of Mysterio
- Yashar, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21Yea but will Tobey Maguire still be Spiderman? It would be pretty crazy to replace the lead after the 2 (most likely 3) films.
- KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11as long as tom cruise isn't spider man i'm cool
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Good point about bond. Any others? Batman maybe?
- dn11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12He will always be Donnie Darko in my book - which is not a bad thing
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@Tony Lieu
Kirsten is supposed to be the girl next door, not a super model, and Toby is supposed to be sort of nerdy unable to get her (at first). Did you watch the movies at all? - jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Harry Potter works well because the characters in the books aged with every new book, it meshed nicely with the rate of ageing of the actors in the movies.
Spiderman on the other hand doesn't really have a expansive time-line.
(If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me, I'm not what you would call a "die-hard" Spidey fan). - OgnodoD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Different actors will work fine for the Spider-Man series. Something like Harry Potter, on the other hand, I think works best with the same cast. I'm very glad they're keeping the same kids for that series.
- laserblazer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8No Scientologist can be a hero. The spiritual and mental defects needed to join that fruity little club preclude excellence.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9IMHO Rami is more integral to the franchise than Toby. It just wouldn't be the same without him at the helm. I've loved every Rami flick since Evil Dead.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The source is a press event in LA and the person who said it is the director of spiderman 3. I think the source is credable enough. You can get in big trouble for misquoting something like this.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Tobey Maguire quote:
"To me it seems like this is a natural point for the team to break up because we have a lot of story conclusions that were going along for the main characters for the first two movies and we kind of tie almost everything up for the third movie. It feels like a trilogy to me and it feels like the end."
And Kirsten has already indicated that she's not interested in returning if both Sam and Tobey don't return.
Besides, Tobey may be getting too old for the role. He's 32 now. If it takes 3 years between releases (as it did between S-M 2 & 3), Tobey would be 41 by the time the sixth installment was released.
As much as I love Spider-Man, it may be time to give the franchise a rest until they can find another director who has as much vision as Raimi does. You don't have to look farther than the Batman franchise to see what happens when the studios bring in replacement teams, not because they've got the right mix of talent, vision, and story, but because they feel that there's still money left on the table. I don't think ANYBODY wants to see the studio make the Spider-Man equivalent of "Batman & Robin". - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I thought there was only six ways to sunday, you know, like monday through saturday ?"
You obviously have never been sued by a holywood director before. - bytor4232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Personally, I think Jake will, er might, make an excellent replacement.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@thetaoofbill
Maguire is 31 BTW not 32 until June 27th
plus Still the best poster ever
http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0316654/Ss/0316654/choice.jpg.html?hint=group - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6When people make ***** up they don't usually quote famous directors who could sue your ass nine ways till sunday. They say they have an unnamed inside man. Just because it's the internet doesn't mean journalistic laws don't apply.
- jiggawoot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's an interesting point. Would you like to give some reasoning behind your thoughts, or did you just want to put it out there and see what happened?
- musicphreke, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@rcran
Think "Star Wars". Star Trek movies, too, I believe. - AstralAutomaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought there was only six ways to sunday, you know, like monday through saturday ?
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My bad. Well in that case he could easily play a high school student.
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whatever dude, he's still a great actor, I don't really care if he's a scientologist or not (as long as he doesn't force it on us).
- stepfresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why the aggression m3mn0n? Surely your narrow mind has a little space for the opinion of someone who's SEEN the film, maybe not believe whole-heartedly but leave your lame smack-talk out of it.
- Kallius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If they're going to make casting changes, get rid of Dunst first. The difference in acting skills between her and Macguire are night and day. He's a real actor, she's just pretty fluff.
- KiSA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@rcran
not even getting into specifics like the others... think horror movies - TIEpilot501, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is awful. Raimi actually cares about Spider-man. That's why he doesn't want to ruin the franchise with three pointless movies (Matrix II & III, anyone?). Spider-man deserves better than this.
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Die Hard, Rocky, Indiana Jones...
- metalhead87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Personally, I have no problem with them replacing actors in a movie sequel. Sure, I prefer to see the person that I am used to seeing, but as long as the replacement does a good job, then it's all good with me.
- grahamgrafx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Sonys on board b/c it can be "piss farting on a snare drum" and theyd still make a ton of money, raimi, maguire, and dunst need not apply.
- drafhk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The difference between the bond films and Spiderman, is that every single Bond film was independent work and didn't rely on the one before it. That's why Bond could always have a new girl. Think of the Bond films as a sitcom, where each episode had no reliance on those preceding or following.
The first three Spiderman films, however, have all been directly connected. The plot relies on Tobey Maguire being Spiderman for the sake of fluency. Should he leave the role, it would become confusing, and would be very hard to pull off. Even if the director could pull it off, much of the public would be relatively uninterested. Think of Star Wars. The only reason the prequels "worked" (and I say that loosely) was because Lucas jumped to a place in the story where the main characters from the OT weren't needed (or were at least much younger). - dandonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you guys are right about the whole bond thing, for me they could do a complete series of spidy movies there are lots of stories to be told. I hate Toby an am not bothered if they replace him. There are still some awesome villains such as carnage and morbious the vulture and shocker.
I want some cross comic movies as well, like wolverine shield and daredevil. They were always cool episodes of the cartoon when i was a kid.
Ultimately i want the spider wars as well, all the parelelle universe stuff that was cool. - quigles3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1THIS NEWS IS NOT TRUE.
I was there at the press junket she's talking about (the movie was a lot of fun, BTW). Sam Raimi never confirmed ANYTHING. Somebody SAID that Avi Arad confirmed 4, 5, 6, and then asked Raimi if he'd be interested. Raimi said it all depends on whether there's a good story to tell, and if he was asked to do it or not.
The person asking the question was just trying to get the inside scoop, so he forced out answers that weren't there. He had previously asked producer Avi Arad about whether another trilogy was happening, and if they'd continue with Maguire or Raimi, or create a whole thing, etc. But Arad didn't give any sort of definitive answer. He just said, "It all depends."
And that's literally the answer to all rumors like these. Except instead of just saying, "It all depends," they should add, "On money."
Also, the person who started this rumor is Heather Newgen. You want to see who she is? Check out this video interview with Halle Berry:
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=19836
Just watch how she starts off the interview. This person is an idiot. - exscind, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of course Sony will keep making Spider-Man. It's the only thing they're still making money at.
BAM - xkrwlng, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Awesome, its about time that a decent trilogy gets a sequel trilogy.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It wouldn't be such a bad idea if a new and equally competent director came in to take over for the next trio of films, and they cast a new Peter Parker and Mary Jane. I think the franchise would survive.
- Skegg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Gyllenhaal FTW!
- unusualbob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2blu-ray FTW!
- kylexile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0948470/faq#.2.1.1
This is usually the best place to find information on movies. - bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Well 3 looks cool, but it's really the villains that sell the movie, and spider-man has some really lame ones. Hobgoblin, the Lizard could be worth while picks but after that it's the bottom of the bucket.
Rhino, Mysterio, Morbius the Living Vampire, Morlun, Hydro Man, Shocker, the Vulture, Electro, Chameleon, Kraven the Hunter.
Oh no watch out spider-man its Kraven the Hunter! - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1He'll go where the $$ is.
- soansoak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hope he works on the Sword of Truth series first, though. If anyone can do that series justice, he can.
- slappynutz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Ok jackass ... here's an "elitist" who's actually seen the movie. Have you ever heard of public screenings? Probably not because you must live in some backwater. Every major city has public screenings, and they're not filled with movie reviewers.
And guess what? As a fan of the comic, AND the first two movies, Spiderman 3 is a MAJOR disappointment. Blind devotion to a movie franchise, one that literally craps all over the original source material after 2 great installments, and spewing crap without actually seeing the movie ... you're a moron. Here are some spoilers for you, Mr. Mensa.
SPOILERS.
THEY KILL VENOM. Incinerate him. He gets all of 15 minutes before dying. Will go down in history as the weakest villain story ever. Worse even than making Galactus an evil cloud (as in a rain cloud) in FF2.
EMO SPIDEY has a dance number. How do you treat the dark impulses that the black suit twisted in Peter Parker's psyche? By dressing him emo, giving him a bunch of ill-conceived "dark" jokes, and then putting him in a jarring dance number.
Those two moments alone are enough to destroy Spiderman 3 for me. And they will destroy it for you, once you pull your head out of your ass. - GhostWithToast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i wish sam raimi would get back to making the movies he's really good at. Evil Dead, Darkman style films with some stylistic cinematics. The Spider Man films are ok, but contain but a shadow of the nuance that his original fans love.
