Absolutely. Crowe could never in a million years pull off Steve Irwin's little-kid enthusiasm, for one thing. I can't think of two more opposite personalities. Crowe will come off looking ridiculous and Irwin's memory will be cheapened by a horribly cast movie. - daven1986, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61IMO there should be no movie made, he was a legend in his shows. anything else would just be rubbish and an insult to his memory
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34It should really be Paul Hogan.
"Call that a stingray? THIS is a stingray!" - clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27I immediately think of the South Park episode portraying Crowe as a guy fighting everything.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Didn't Steve love animals? Not kick their ass in bar fights.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Don't ruin the ending...
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Say what you want about Russle Crowe as a person, the guy is a good actor. A Beautiful Mind is a great film.
The point is taken though, as far as I know, he's never had to play the "silly but strangely likeable" guy. - turbodigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"Fighting around the world with Russel Crowe!!"
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9crowe may be an ass but he's also one of this generations more talented actors. at least they're giving this movie A quality talent.
who else is gonna pull it off? will smith: "stingray? you just did what to me?! aww, hell no." - kingace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@snipehack:
Well, they were friends... - cm32438, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think people like to remember Crowe for his "Fightin' 'Round the World" appearance (I know I do, anyway), and that just doesn't mesh well with who Steve Irwin was. I'm sure they could find someone better.
EDIT: If only I had read the comment (thread) below... - grizwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7WORST IDEA EVER ... no one can play Steve Irwin ...
- bryguy000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Movie voice over guy - "In a world dominated by Crocks... One man... has what it takes to rule them... He is... The Crock Hunter."
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+7Crowe may have a poor reputation with all the punchig and phone hitting and whatnot, but if you see his interviews on late nighe tv, post award shows, movie extras, he seems to be a genuinely nice and humble guy.
He can pull Irwin off easily, but a movie ALREADY!? And yeah, Paul Hogan would be.. well he'd be funny, which is not what should be done for a biopic. Plus Crowe does slightly resemble Irwin.. imagine him with Steve's hair and you'll see what I mean. - furst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think Crowe is a brilliant actor and could pull this off better than most others. His acting career is a world apart from his real life lashouts.
- Ramsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4not to mention that the guy died like what 2 weeks ago dont you think it is a bit soon to be making a movie about it
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why must every single famous person that dies need a movie made after them. I'm not an arrogant ass and I loved Steve Irwin and everything that he did but these things are getting ridiculous. (Movies about the Twin Towers and the Flights are included in this too).
When someone like this dies, just leave it. We can watch the stuff that he really did do on TV. We don't need some half-assed "look-a-like" trying to portray the real thing.
Hollywood is as greasy as ever, trying to make a buck on just about anything that happens. - biffsputnik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I used to respect Russell Crowe as an excellent actor, which he is, but then I read this.....
http://digg.com/movies/When_I_was_Russell_Crowe_s_stooge - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Mother ***** stingrays on a plane"??
- b0b0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can't Hollywood just let Steve Irwin rest in peace? He died a very tragic death, one that was very devastating for his family. It is horrible to think that some bloodsucking Hollywood leeches want to capitalize on that just weeks after he died! They should just let the man rest in peace rather than attempt to overdramatize his life (as tends to be the case with Russel Crowe's biographical films).
Btw, this is not in reply to you, TiCL. Digg's comments system is a little screwy on my computer. - Syndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh how i hope this doesn't go through, no one can even come close to being like him, he was a one off.
- stormin986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If a movie's about a guy that people have heard of but not commonly seen, a movie about them, cool, whatever.
Steve Irwin is a man who I have seen countless times on TV who's image is permanently engrained into my memory. Seeing him played by Russell Crowe (or anyone for that matter) is one of the stupidest ideas I have heard in a while. - Conwaysb0718, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This motion picture is unnecessary. The man's life had already been chronicled by his own show. Why dont they take the budget set aside for the film/actors and do something in the wildlife conservation arena if one was to seriously honor Steve Irwin's spirit.
- WhoreHay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Steve once told Russell that he wanted him to play him in a movie version of his life."
Hey, it's the man's wishes. - ankyhbk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You would have to assume that they would use some pretty ridiculous animals for a movie of this magnitude to show how kamikaze Steve Irwin really was. Who knows, maybe Crowe will get attacked by the only Butanese Segway-Riding Pompous Albino Tiger in the world during the filming. Cheers to that.
- HomeGrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Geeze...I'm actually surprised that the studios have waited so long to cheapen Steve's image, let alone try and make money off of the guy's death.
Next we'll hear that the studios will give away the profits to the zoo, all in order so the public doesn't backlash for the movie.
For the sake of Steve's widow & children...step away and let the family grieve and come to grips about the devastating event. It's so easy to forget the family and order to make a profit - mrgone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Born in New Zealand in sixty-four
A hot-headed actor named Russell Crowe
He loves to act but he loves one thing more
Fightin' Round The World
He fights his directors and he fights his fans
It's a problem no one understands
If there's two things he loves it's fighting and
Fightin' Round The World
Makin' movies, makin' music and
Fight-in' Round The World!
Russell Crowe!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This was my first thought too.. jeeze.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We don't need a misscast movie to immortalize Steve. We already have countless enjoyable hours of video featuring the REAL Steve. Why watch a pale immitation?
- david630, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@snipehack
I dont know maybe because hes a great actor and they were friends - JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the *****? Why would anyone ever think they could even come CLOSE to Steve... and so soon?
I swear, this "Hollywood" ***** pisses me off. No respect. Only money. Pathetic. - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he's a decent actor - i'm sure he'll be able to play a nice guy on screen, even if he isn't one himself..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Agreed, an amazing episode. I cannot see Russell Crowe playing Steve Irwin, but I don't know him personally, and the tabloids are making up drama 98% of the time. Although, he has beat people up.
- Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow. These men have no conscience. They waste no time defiling Steve's image and making good money at it too.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"We couldn't find cancer, but we found someone WITH cancer! Take that cancer!"
- diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, we will find out how great an actor Russell Crowe is. There was an electricity about Steve Irwin that was unique. I fear that in an attempt to mimic Steve, Russell may end up doing an awful caricature. At least he wants to do the film for the right reasons, but why not do a documentary with the real Steve representing himself. I great tribute could be done, even if it were to premiere on television, instead of theaters.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They should let the man rest in peace... Hollywood is always trying to make dollars off of tragedy. Look at how many films came out for 9/11... sheeseh
Hollywood = Money Sucking Scum - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont like the idea of making a movie on his life. Steve was steve. No one can portray him.
- twinklyJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Steve Irwin''s a great guy, I'm positive. But, really, is this going to make a good movie?
I mean, it's nice to make an homage to a friend, but it's not like he discovered the cure for AIDS or some long lost missing cousin of the African Dodo bird. Should we build a statue with Marlin Perkins and Steve Irwin and Jim Fowler to honor their achievments?
I think a special, documenting his career and some of the highlights would be great, but 200 million to make a movie, seems kind of mercenary. Who really benefits from that? Russell Crowe or the animals? - Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Crowe: "I'm Not Playing the Crocodile Hunter"" hah. what did I say.
- N080dy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You do realize that your equation states that Irwin = D BAG!!! right?
- Linkmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Irwin's life on TV was a biopic in it's own right. Why do a movie?? So Russell Crowe can make a gazillion more dollars?? Crowe is a tool, no doubt about that, but he's made some good flicks (Gladiator, Cinderella Man) but C'mon, does he really need to make this movie. Agreed, Irwin was a character in his own right, and his named should not be sullied by Russell Crowe's portrayal.
Irwin = Legend Crowe = D BAG!!! - Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Steve once told Russell that he wanted him to play him in a movie version of his life."
nuff said - Modulo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for posterity, I would just like to say that this story is setting off my ***** meter at about a 9.9 out of 10.
- CharlesDarwin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Alright Tuggy. Today we're gonna be fightin' the vicious stingrays! Watch me stick my thumb in his butthole.
- martin993, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I call *****. Someone's obviously just pick Crowe out as the first Australian bloke they could think of. He may be an arsehole but he's a great actor who usually picks very good film roles. Not only do I doubt that he'd want to play someone so well known and loved who seemed to be on the telly every five minutes but if he was indeed a friend then I'm sure he'd show more good taste to the guy's wife and kids. Nobody needs this movie, least of all Russell Crowe. This would be career suicide and I reckon he's smart enough to know it.
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Inaccurate: http://www.digg.com/movies/Crowe_denies_Irwin_Biopic_rumours
- martin993, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who wouldn't want Russell Crowe to play them in a movie? I'm sure Steve didn't imagine being dead at the time.
- scotsworth788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, they just start right in on it don't they? Hollywood just can't seem to wait to make bioepics, or movies about 9/11....or any tragedy.
