- ThaDRD, on 03/30/2009, -9/+97I wouldn't cancel Netflix over this, but I have now turned off Blu-ray rentals. There aren't that many Blu-ray movies available anyway.
- roguepirate, on 03/30/2009, -5/+79the actual Blu-Ray fee is increasing by 400% from $1/month to $4/month.
- DreamVsPs2, on 03/30/2009, -5/+76i blame the film industry for charging $40 for a damn br movie.
- Morac, on 03/30/2009, -11/+75The Netflix Blu-ray fee is just stupid to begin with. There's no justification for it and increasing it is just an insult to Netflix's customers.
For one, the cost of Blu-Ray discs isn't much more than DVDs and the prices have been dropping lately. You can get some Blu-ray discs for about the same price as the DVD disc.
Second, Blu-Ray discs are much more durable than DVDs so Blu-Ray discs don't need to be replaced as much as DVD discs. Two copies of a movie on DVD is more than the same movie on DVD . So in the long run Blu-ray discs will be cheaper for Netflix, yet Netflix charges more to rent them. - Shagin, on 03/30/2009, -3/+63you mean 300%? but yes... still outrageous
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -4/+42Good luck with that.
Netflix actively "throttles" the rate movies are sent to you, if it feels your DVD turnover is too fast--so they have an active interest in sending you the least amount of movies in a month as they can. This is to encourage you to "upgrade" to more discs at a time, which in turn is more expensive and increases their profits. - T202, on 03/30/2009, -3/+37Does anyone know how much blockbuster charges for a 3 at-a-time unlimited w/ blu-ray? It seems every other quarter Netflix raises it's price and it is getting old fast.
- roguepirate, on 03/30/2009, -2/+35Netflix 3-DVD plan + bluray = $16.99 + 4 = 20.99
Blockbuster 3-DVD + bluray (no fee) = $19.99
No dramatic differences. - nonymous666, on 03/30/2009, -0/+31"I would love to be able to mark a DVD as returned in your queue, so when you put it in the mail they can immediately process your next movie and send it to you a day faster"
They used to allow you to do that several years ago. Alas, people abused it by marking stuff returned before they even returned it, so Netflix killed it. - Frozo, on 03/30/2009, -0/+31I just dropped the blu-ray option. It was nice to tell someone live on the phone. I would suggest everyone call and cancel their blu-ray option so they get the picture. You can always add it again a few months down, but they need to hear this protest from us.
- baberim, on 03/30/2009, -2/+29I canceled my Blu-Ray access as soon as I saw this. I understand a few cents, but $4 extra a month!? That is outrageous!
- mahoneyxp, on 03/30/2009, -8/+33Instead of increasing prices more, which will make people think twice about going to Netflix for Blu-rays instead of Blockbuster, they should add improvements to their system. I would love to be able to mark a DVD as returned in your queue, so when you put it in the mail they can immediately process your next movie and send it to you a day faster instead of having to wait for the DVD to arrive at their facility.
- anexanhume, on 03/30/2009, -7/+31Rokay Raggy. Reehehehehehehehehehehe.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/30/2009, -1/+25What about instant-view streaming through Xbox 360, Tivo, and other devices?
- SoyJames, on 03/30/2009, -0/+23Blu-ray Access Removed
Dear James,
As you requested, we've just removed Blu-ray access from your account.
-Your friends at Netflix - diggdat, on 03/30/2009, -5/+27
To be honest, I find Netflix to be a real value when it comes to our household entertainment dollars. I don't think it is that bad a deal.
If my wife and I go to even one movie in a theater, it costs about as much as a Month on Netflix.
I still go to the theater once in a while but the prices there have gone up far more than Netflix has, over the past few years. - biscoradio, on 03/30/2009, -0/+20I just downgraded my account from 3 movies at a time with blu-ray at $17.99 a month (was going to be increased to $20.99 a month after the change) to 1 movie at a time for $10.99 a month with blu-ray. It takes forever for me to watch the movies they send me anyway and with instant streaming becoming more prevalent I don't need 3 at a time. Thanks netflix, you saved me money by raising your rates!
- ocellnuri, on 03/30/2009, -1/+21Netflix doesn't pay retail for its discs, it pays a negotiated rental license fee.
- Anand999, on 03/30/2009, -0/+18They used do this when I first started using them back in 2000. The feature disappeared though. If I had to guess why, it's probably because it was being abused.
- shwaa, on 03/30/2009, -0/+16The price increase is exorbitant considering the number of Blu-ray movies available.
I can see how they would lose money on someone renting 100% blu-ray, but I doubt many people do that with the limited selection - rivalthecreator, on 03/30/2009, -1/+16I love my Blu-Rays but there's one problem.. half of the movies that I want to see aren't even in ***** Blu-Ray. Until Netflix has everything I want to see in Blu-Ray, I'll just cancel.
- tastypaste, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14It depends on which plan you have. I have the 4 disc plan and it went up to $5/mo. Used to be $1 for everybody on every plan.
- ElRayQuieres, on 03/30/2009, -1/+15Just for the record, if you have the 1 at a time unlimited rentals for 8.99, as I do, the blu-ray fee only increased from $1 to $2.
- ObeseSnake, on 03/30/2009, -2/+15[citation needed] --> real life experience
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/30/2009, -4/+17When they were both on the market, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movies were priced the same.
- duniyadnd, on 03/30/2009, -2/+15@blinkfink182 - there was a class action suit because of that.
- Morac, on 03/30/2009, -1/+14Ugh stupid typos. I meant 2 DVDs > 1 BR.
Basically if DVDs need to be replaced twice as often as Blu-Rays, then DVDs will cost more in the long run. - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -2/+14Canceled subscription.
- MWeather, on 03/30/2009, -2/+14Yes, you're the only HD-DVD fan.
- Lionhart, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11As opposed to people who get netflix and rip/burn everything.
- Monotonousblob, on 03/30/2009, -1/+11Yes
- happymollusk, on 03/30/2009, -4/+14Canceled my BluRay access. This is egregious behavior.
Sold off my long held NFLX position as well. There is profit and then their is being predatory.
This was a classic bait and switch.
I hope the pricing strategists get their hat handed to them.
With constant bad economic news, its just a bad idea to tweak something like this.
It's one of those 'little things' that may aggravate things just enough.
They might get away with it, but I think its the beginning of more bad things to come from NFLX.
Vote with your wallet. - DiggCommando, on 03/30/2009, -0/+10Same. Maybe they will get the message.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -4/+13uhhhh...since when is cost to produce the only thing that determines the price of a good?
- libradragon, on 03/30/2009, -0/+9They could at least throw in HD streaming.
- gattaca86, on 03/30/2009, -0/+9oh dear... it seems that my blu-rays have been lost in the mail
- KainDL, on 03/30/2009, -1/+10I blame the people that bought blu-ray players and keep paying $40 for a damn br movie.
If people didn't buy them at that price, they wouldn't be selling at that price, blame all the other technophiles that have to see those boobies and explosions in the highest definition posible. - Garmonbozzia, on 03/30/2009, -2/+11RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE
- DCstewieG, on 03/30/2009, -1/+10Then most likely you have a TV under 32" or, to be frank, just a plain crappy one.
- Falldog, on 03/30/2009, -1/+10Just because the cost of Blu-Ray over DVD in physical terms is marginal doesn't mean that studios aren't trying to rake in more money for them.
- readacook, on 03/30/2009, -2/+10I canceled my blu-ray access as soon as I heard about this. I fear that Netflix is not far from becoming just like every other ***** company. Hopefully Redbox and the vestiges of Blockbuster will keep them from getting too evil too quickly.
- VipeNess, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8yep just got the email about 2 hours ago; im not really happy about it. i mean; blu ray prices have dropped to like almost 20 bucks.
- seedsofwar, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8man, i was pissed about $1 a month. now $4? will be downgrading, maybe getting rid of the service.
stupid move. - ketemphor, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8Re duniyadnd:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11262292/ - mrchin, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8200% increase for me from a buck to two. So I reduced my subscription by 20% by removing Blu-Ray.
- flashingcurser, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7As in "ruh roh raggy"
- zirconx, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10$1 less and you get to return your discs to the store and get new movies instantly!
- Frankyfan3, on 03/30/2009, -5/+12Dugg explicitly for the phrase "Ruh Roh"
- zirconx, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10Its a major factor in the cost of a BluRay disc.
- alexra, on 03/30/2009, -16/+23I prefer torrents
