- bluesparks, on 12/03/2008, -19/+548Roger Ebert, I want to hate you because of your dismissal of video games as art, but then you do wonderful things like this...
- 0ceanic, on 12/04/2008, -34/+532creationism, for people who think their god is too stupid to come up with evolution.
- scottknick, on 12/03/2008, -23/+478FTA: It is not difficult for me to describe how you made me feel by exploiting the deaths of millions of Jews in support of your argument for a peripheral Christian belief. It fills me with contempt.
Savage, and accurate. - grungegbunny, on 12/04/2008, -42/+290Creationists are morons. In fact I will go on to say anyone that will accept religious dogma over proven science are irrational, illogical and delusional.
- dalittle, on 12/04/2008, -17/+242Hard to think that Ben Stein can remember all of that trivia and be an idiot at the same time. Guess memory and intelligence can be mutually exclusive.
- publishcron, on 12/04/2008, -7/+156I had the misfortune of being at an event on Monday where Ben Stein was a speaker. As I scanned the room for peoples reactions, all that I noticed were puzzled looks like, "Did I just actually hear him say that?"
- drlha, on 12/04/2008, -10/+144Or: for those who think God is as small minded as they are.
- getbusyliving, on 12/04/2008, -35/+156Ben Stein is a ***** brainwashed lunatic.
- Spo8, on 12/04/2008, -19/+139I used to think you were cool, or at least funny, Ben Stein.
Then you pull this *****. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+118Re-read the first paragraph, Dysarthria; Ebert makes it very clear that this isn't a review:
"I've been accused of refusing to review Ben Stein's documentary "Expelled," a defense of Creationism, because of my belief in the theory of evolution. Here is my response."
He isn't working in his capacity as a film critic - "his job" - here; he's offering a critique of the ideas Stein espouses in the film. If that doesn't suit you, then go write your own ***** movie review. - Twikkert, on 12/04/2008, -15/+126Bueller?
Bueller? - adventchild08, on 12/04/2008, -0/+107A bunch of people with red eyes?
- trpnblies7, on 12/04/2008, -1/+103So I guess he didn't like the movie?
- ninjaface, on 12/04/2008, -11/+112This movie negates any of Ben Stein's intelligence credibility.
- pintomp3, on 12/04/2008, -2/+83you mean just like gravity is only a theory?
Hence... The THEORY of Gravitation
http://www.notjustatheory.com/ - AyaJulia, on 12/04/2008, -2/+79For every sarcastic comment imitating a stereotypical comedic fundamentalist/creationist, there's at least one REAL fundamentalist/creationist who actually thinks this way. So it really is impossible to tell. Religious satire is the only time I'll ever support the use of that ridiculous "/s" running rampant on digg lately. :P
- Tr33fiddy, on 12/04/2008, -10/+81That films stands in my bottom 10 of all time.
No, I can't think of any others in the bottom 10 right now.
Yes, that means Expelled may actually be, the worst film I have ever seen. - laserdog, on 12/04/2008, -3/+70No, but it looks like he bought you some sour grapes.
- BevansDesign, on 12/04/2008, -4/+68Somebody just needs to send him a copy of Grim Fandango.
- ChayD, on 12/04/2008, -3/+55I agree, just creating something doesn't really give a prospective God much in the way of credit, but the whole idea of creating a system of sub atomic particles and the laws that govern them which become elements that become amino-acids that *eventually* become living creatures that can adapt to their environment (made from the same sub-atomic particles) - now *that's* a work worthy of God.
- nullcodes, on 12/04/2008, -3/+53No. If a movie says stuff he doesn't believe in, then obviously he thinks a lot of the logic that went into the premises are flawed which in turn makes the movie annoying. So if he thinks the movie sucks, that's his opinion and that's what a review is supposed to be. It's not like he's marking a math test.
- kronix2, on 12/04/2008, -1/+48Learn the difference between a layman's theory and a scientific theory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory#Sci ...
Evolution happens. IT'S BEYOND DISPUTE. We can *see* microbes and viruses evolving before our eyes under a microscope. The "Theory of Evolution" describes how and why evolution occurred.
Similarly, gravity exists. It's beyond dispute. We can feel the Earth's gravitational pull. Various theories describe the mechanism by which gravity exerts itself.
Again, learn the difference between the word "theory" as used in everyday speech and the same word used in the context of science. - kingmanic, on 12/04/2008, -0/+45You ought to member he was a Nixon speech writer and apologists. He was a bad bad man long before any of the media roles.
- grungegbunny, on 12/04/2008, -3/+48Who the hell would want Ben Stein to be a speaker at their event?
- mediaspree, on 12/04/2008, -6/+49If only there was some way to Win Ben Steins Money.
- NoDo, on 12/04/2008, -8/+50i thought Ben Stein was supposed to be intelligent..
- pintomp3, on 12/04/2008, -43/+85how long until jimmyspaza and the ron paul fans start claiming "evolution is just a theory"?
- psmonteiro, on 12/04/2008, -8/+45or Bioshock
- knightraine, on 12/04/2008, -0/+36Theory is above fact, it's a way of explaining a lot of facts. Evolution is a FACT, proven beyond reasonable doubt by Genetics (Human Chromosome Number 2 in particular), the Fossil Record and well... common sense, we're not that different from the nature around us, except for our level of consciousness and self-awareness.
Evolutionary Theory refers to explanations of "HOW" Evolution happened, Natural Selection is the theory, it might be totally accurate as currently understood, or may be a little bit different. Either way, trying to dismiss Evolution as "just a theory" only displays a huge misunderstanding of Science... and more often than not, a politically or religiously motivated bias. - wavenger, on 12/04/2008, -0/+36In fact, he is smart and funny, he's just smart, funny, and wrong about a lot of stuff. Intelligent people can be fantastically, bizarrely wrong, and at the same time even more arrogant, stubborn, and closed-minded in their wrongness than any average person.
I still can't stand him nowadays because he's always riffing about financial ***** and creationism, but I used to watch his shows and laugh. - ortucis, on 12/04/2008, -5/+41^ HE IS NOT BEING SARCASTIC.
** LYNCH MOB!! ** - benman587, on 12/04/2008, -2/+37"And I am a lead bioengineer at a corporate research firm "
No you're not. - rowjimmy, on 12/04/2008, -5/+40the cartoon at the bottom of the review needs to be reprinted in major newspapers everywhere across this country. along with an editorial about how if we allow back-asswards fundamentalists to control our educational agenda, we'll stand no chance of remaining relevant in a globalized economy. dugg, though i agree with most that ebert is normally a douche.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+35Yeah--he actually accused Mark Felt (Deep Throat) of causing the rise of the Khmer Rouge.
Ben Stein is an asshat. - RennyB, on 12/04/2008, -1/+34It's not an accident. It's probability.
- tillerman00, on 12/04/2008, -5/+37Two opposable thumbs down for Ben Stein.
- dizzythegreat, on 12/04/2008, -5/+37Right. Especially since numbers actually exist to back up claims about global warming.
- JasonAdams13, on 12/04/2008, -3/+35I used to look up to Ben Stein because he was actually smart and funny, but when I heard some of the arguements he makes (like equating Darwin and Hitler) I completely lost faith in him.
- Volatile36, on 12/04/2008, -5/+36I'm not saying Native Americans weren't in some case intentionally given the disease, or that wars with Old World peoples haven't killed a huge number of people, but most of the deaths (thought to be up to 90% in some areas) of those 50-100 million Native Americans came from Smallpox within a hundred years of Columbus' arrival.
The Jews, on the other hand, were all murdered.
Both horrible aspects of human history to be sure. - Jericho6, on 12/04/2008, -3/+33I guess I don't know the full extent of the movie, or rather documentary, as I haven't seen it. But if you can't get on board with the main premise, it kinda ruins the whole thing.
I mean if I watched a documentary about the tenats of scientology, I'd write the whole thing off as ludicrious and a waste of time. Documentaries differ from movies in that the main message is meant to be something real and informative. Movies are art. Documentaries are learning. - ClevelandBrown, on 12/04/2008, -5/+35It's already been proven you moron.
- Poseur117, on 12/04/2008, -10/+39Batman and Robin.
Spider-Man 3.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Larry the Cable Guy: Witless Protection
House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, Alone In the Dark, or pretty much anything else directed by Uwe Boll. - publishcron, on 12/04/2008, -0/+29Bankers, I guess they though he had come economic pearls of wisdom. All he did was talk about how ***** up his kid is. It was really bizarre.
- tolbs, on 12/04/2008, -2/+30Religulous isn't on the list because it was actually pretty good.
- adventchild08, on 12/04/2008, -4/+32Plenty of people who have aided our growth as a society have believed in God. Digg's own Barack Obama and Ron Paul are both "Theists".
People should have a right to faith. I just hope they are open minded enough to not let it interfere with science and progress. - wardsac, on 12/04/2008, -4/+32Just because it states that it isn't taking a stance doesn't automatically mean it doesn't.
That's like a man kicking another man in the ass repeatedly, a 3rd observer coming over and asking "Why are you kicking that man in the ass" and the man doing the kicking replying "I'm not kicking him in the ass" and the 3rd party accepting that as fact.
The film can state whatever the hell it wants about it's intentions, that doesn't mean anyone with half a brain won't see through those claims. - Dumbledorito, on 12/04/2008, -0/+27@Owndyou: You do realize that a scientific theory is far different from the layman usage as in: "I have a theory that peanuts are really made from peanut butter, not the other way around."
Don't you? - adventchild08, on 12/04/2008, -9/+35Agreed. To think Theism and Evolution are mutually exclusive is counter-productive to societal gain.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+28"Creationism wasn't even in the movie. Stein was talking about intelligent design which is much different"
Sorry, but the Supreme Court* and anyone with half a brain disagrees. Intelligent design is literally creationism with the word "God" replaced by "Supreme Being." You're an idiot.
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitzmiller_v._Dover_A ... - pintomp3, on 12/04/2008, -1/+26intelligent design is creationism, moron. they even got busted doing a copy and replace job on the book.
