Saudi Arabia was very much tending towards 'Westernization' until A.) Iran was taken over by a bunch of religious nuts, and B.) Mecca was seized by a group of religous nuts and the Saudi royal family realized they could be vulnerable on the extreme right.... and the 'civilized' western nations wouldn't lift a finger to help them if there was an attempted coup.
It's certainly not perfect, but Abdullah is taking the country forward as fast as he responsibly can. Bear in mind, there are people still alive there who grew up in tents in the desert. Within the span of a generation they now have skyscrapers. I think there is a generational/multi-generational speed limit on rapid change. (See: history of Western civilization).
They have a modern infrastructure, stock exchange, regulatory framework, and unlike the aforementioned, the rule of law that's actually enforced.
The Western media loses its mind when it sees women walking around in abayas (not ***** burkas) because so much of their narrow conception of liberalization is a very specific version of women's rights. Let's remember, for example, that women couldn't vote in freaking Spain until the 1970's.
Instead, the media doesn't look at progress (or, if it does, belittles it) and, instead, just focuses on how 'backward' these savages are and how they could possibly be our allies. It's moronic and ignorant. -
