- theenginedriver, on 10/06/2008, -0/+50So awesome. I'm very excited to see this done with modern technology and a very capable director.
- sfury, on 10/06/2008, -0/+49Well, time to read it then, enough postponing.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 10/07/2008, -2/+36Dude, 1984 is undoubtedly one of the greatest, most important (and most depressing) books ever written.
On the other hand ...
When I was a kid, my father told me that "1984" was a "visionary" because Orwell had thought of *television* decades before anyone else.
Two years later, I finally read "1984" - and for the first time in my life I realized that my father could be clueless about something.
And another 25 years later, here's your comment. Deja vu.
You see, 1984 is not about surveillance technology.
It's about permanent war and total dehumanization in the name of ideology.
These are important topics, no doubt.
But then, take a look at the reality of the average American/European in 2008.
He may *know* someone who is poor or at war, but most of us aren't.
We sit at home, connected to the world by wires.
We enjoy a variety of artificial stimulations.
We digest information pre-packaged for us by global media corporations.
We play with increasingly complex toys, which easily break so the megacorps can sell the next generation of shiny stuff to us.
We stuff our faces with processed food. Most of us have never grown something in their garden to eat it (Urgh; what a messy idea!).
We enjoy heavy doses of virtual sex, because the real thing has become too darn messy, complicating and dangerous.
We sit still, drugging ourselves because we are afraid of the alternatives.
And now tell me again that "Brave new world" is not close to what we call reality. - b8man99, on 10/07/2008, -1/+30This isn't fiction anymore - it'll be reality TV.
- metaliq, on 10/06/2008, -2/+30I am curious as to what aspects of the novel he plans on focusing on.
Also, I think the film would serve as a stronger political dystopian commentary if it were to take place in a world similar to ours: Not that of one ridden with futuristic science-fiction spectacle. The similarities and commentary would be enhanced and more immediate if this were to be the case. - carbonfree314, on 10/07/2008, -1/+26ORGY PORGY!
- fletchsliver, on 10/06/2008, -0/+21Oh. Hell. Yes.
- Sunflare670, on 10/07/2008, -2/+21There is a lot of sex and orgies in that book... This may be awkward to see with the parents.
- bonniegrrl, on 10/06/2008, -0/+18Can't wait to see what he does!
- zombiecarlin, on 10/07/2008, -0/+16Don't worry I'll take your mom to see it.
- jmcneilly, on 10/07/2008, -3/+17Brave New World is closer to reality than 1984? With 1 surveillance camera for every 10 citizens of Great Britain? With ID being required to even get on a an Amtrak train in the US? With interactive television worldwide? Uhh...
- drbadass, on 10/07/2008, -1/+13Hopefully we won't need to wait another 20 years for the [actual] director's cut, like we did with Blade Runner
- nkleffman, on 10/07/2008, -0/+12For anyone that is going to read A Brave New World, make sure you get the version that includes 'Brave New World Revisited'. It includes some interesting correspondence between Aldous Huxley and his former pupil Eric Arthur Blair (George Orwell) as to which form of scientific dictatorship will emerge in the future, the 1984 version or a Brave New World version.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/07/2008, -1/+12Agreed, contemporary society would be much more compelling. Focusing on high divorce rates, prescription drugs, status symbols and social cliches, etc.
- redtaboo, on 10/07/2008, -0/+11OH MY GOD!!!
this just gave chills!
Ridley Scott plus one of my favorite books!!!!!
I am sorry for all the exclamation points, but ever since seeing the last HORRIBLE film butcher this story I have been hoping for someone with real vision to make this. - inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+11Ew.
- enantiodromia, on 10/07/2008, -0/+9awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome
"half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a week-end, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon..." - bbardlbradd, on 10/07/2008, -0/+9Yes, because in 1984, not everybody was on soma... they were on chocolate rations.
Kids didn't mess around with each others genitalia in 1984 either...
Ah, 2008, our brave new world. - WhiskeyThieves, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Glad to see Ridely back to doing Sci-fi.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+9It doesn't need modern technology or special effects. It should look exactly as the world does now, since we are there.
- Tyrghast, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
- theboozer, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Ridley Scott's penchant for extreme detail is what makes his Science Fiction absolutely astounding. Brave New World is some seriously heavy material, but Scott can make this a surreal trip in the same fashion that we weren't sure if Blade Runner was an action movie, a burnt-out picture of the apocalypse, or the most beautiful train of images that had yet been strung together on celluloid. I love you Ridley Scott. God bless you.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8get on that.
- rootsm3, on 10/07/2008, -1/+9This could not come any sooner.
- CrazyArcher, on 10/07/2008, -2/+9Or awesome to see with your parents.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+8I dunno, this story is mostly about the people. Effects could easily destroy it.
- fadetoone, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7Except all the little kids aren't having sex in public.
But they *are* doing it in private, so we're halfway there! - rolf, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7Tim Burton?
- nico623, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6Wow ! If this is true it should be insanely awesome ! I can't wait to see all hundreds of helicopters flying around, bet the costumes will be quite insane as well.
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6Ridley Scott is the Trevor Horn of movies. Most of his great work was done in the Eighties; but he still has class and influence.
If he brings the right people on board, if he has the guts to stay true to the book, this could be the one relevant SF movie of our decade.
But then, this might become the biggest ***** in all of SF movie history.
Let's keep our fingers crossed. - sharkd, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6Mmmmmmm, Soma and endless empty, meaningless sex... [gurgle]
- xGuerrillaRadio, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6Fahrenheit 451, too.
- davecachia, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5The book was good, hope the movie does it justice.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5huxley pwns
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5And don't forget, there is now actually a drug called Soma.
- TheMachine1, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5All this crazy ***** going down I can not deal...I need to score some Soma now.
- fadetoone, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5Will Leonard Nimoy be in it again? What a weird ass version that one was...
- burjzyntski, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6Science-fiction is just science-fact that hasn't happened yet...
- BoneheadFarker, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5And besides this being a movie thread, what the hell does that have to do with anything?
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5O brave new world, That has such people in't!
- sakuraz, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4I;d like to see Jobs replace Ford
- PleaseJustDie, on 10/07/2008, -1/+5orgy porgy
- sidewinderaim9x, on 10/07/2008, -1/+5Great director + great (one of the only high school) book (I actually read) = hopefully great movie!
- Wawin, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4while I agree on almost eveypoint you say, the class society in bnw is clearly marked, remember the alphas etc. Even though there are easily recognizable classes in our daily world, its nothing like that of bnw. In 1984 the class structure seems to work quite similar to that of modern dictatorships.
Iran and North Korea are clear examples of 1984 type societies, even Venezuela to a smalle extent. A common enemy, constant "war", fact and historical manipulations.
I think a bnw world is more of a possibility in a society such as u.s. or europe, however 1984 seems more plausible to me if you live in the third world. - meandnips, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Can't wait. I'll have to re-read the book though, it's been ages and I know I've forgotten a lot.
- Anonymous41, on 10/07/2008, -1/+5You guys do know they're also making a 1984 remake, right?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_(2009_film)
It's still in development, but it's stated to release next year.
Has it can it be dystopian movies tiem nao? - inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4go to imdb.
- Obermeister, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4There is no way that Hollywood could handle a movie as edgy as that book...Even just to imply all the sex would still be a problem for them, because of the minors. The only way you would know this movie was being done right would be if there were people calling for banning it.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4YOUR TIME WILL COME
- seks03, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Whole movie for anyone that wants to see it - 184 min
