- MassiveTaTas, on 10/10/2007, -8/+52Making a mental note never to attend a Regal Cinema for being such an asswipe.
- BrokenCircle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+36$71 dollars paid to Regal cinema for a 20second cellphone clip seems a lot more reasonable than paying $2,500 dollars to the RIAA for making a copy of a Star Bucks Sample CD.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+37I have an idea. STOP GOING TO THE THEATER. If any business treated me like a criminal, I would never go there or buy their products again.
- Fr00sh, on 10/10/2007, -7/+38Regal Cinemas needs to calm down.
- jacobu9, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30How is making someone pay $71 "making an example" out of them? It costs more than that to go to all the big summer movies.
- theoallardyce, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20She would have gotten into less trouble for actually shop-lifting a DVD, or even getting caught driving drunk down the wrong side of the road - like Nicole Richie.
The only advice I can give people who get caught filming in the cinema: knock the cinema guy/security guard out by smashing them over the head with your camera and then run - the penalty for videoing in the cinema is so high that any extra assault or GBH charges will be nothing in comparison and could give you vital seconds to get away. Just saying it how it is... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -8/+24WTF?
- sanguinekane, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13I work in a Regal Theater, and most of you're right, this company is evil, not to mention it is run by morons. If I didn't have rent and bills to pay, I'd be out of there today.
- reed311, on 10/10/2007, -4/+16Well, if you violate the rules of their business, they don't want you as a customer. It's pretty obvious and clear-cut that you are not allowed to record the movies. Just don't do it. I don't care if you think its moral or not, its private property and they set the rules.
- strax, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15There is no law against pointing a video camera/cameraphone/etc that is turned off at a movie screen (thus not recording anything). Out of protest, everybody should just point cameras that are off at the movie screens, no crime commited so no fine/etc! (Perfect flash mob activity.) Let me know how it goes!
- jdaniel284, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12Sort of ironic... I am "making an example" out of Regal Cinema by never giving them any business again.
- ohanon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10144 minutes = 8640 seconds
$71 for 20 seconds = $3.55/second
therefore, the whole movie would have cost her $30,672
That's a bargain - actorboy, on 10/10/2007, -7/+16I'm usually not one to ask how many times a story will hit the front page, but how many times will this story hit the front page? Last one hit a day ago with over 1200 diggs and 200 comments.
- actorboy, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14And no, it would not "certainly" have fallen under Fair Use. Possibly, I'll give you -- but not certainly.
But hey, she's the one who plead guilty. - katulatakulu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Time zones?
More than 1200 registered Digg users?
People not logging on every day?
I'm usually not one to ask why people whine about duplicate stories instead of ignoring them, but why are you whining about duplicate stories instead of ignoring them? - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I hope the $71 was worth it for these people. I am sure that some people who attend this cinema a lot, and also have heard about this news are going to switch to another cinema, making them lose much more than $71.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11***** you, Regal Cinemas.
- Pic0, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Regal Comments Page http://www.regalcinemas.com/corporate/comments.html
"Our customer relations number is 877-TELLREGAL or 1-877-835-5734" - thehans, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Regal Cinemas is the worst. They have some of the worst Audio Visual presentation in the industry. I'm actually surprised that the screen was lit well enough to capture an image.
- kavery, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10You don't think $71 is light considering what we've seen with RIAA lawsuits amongst other media?
I hate these companies as much as anyone, but good hell, stop with the sensationalist headlines. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6So I guess the majority of Diggers feel that stores shouldn't prosecute shoplifters either. What a bunch of douchebags you are. Quit making excuses for someone that broke a law. Like she needed to get her brother interested in the movie. BS
- wshs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Will someone please fix that goddamn "YOUR SESSION HAS EXPIRED, PLEASE REFRESH THE PAGE BEFORE COMMENTING" error.
@Matthew720:
I guess you missed the part about fair use. I'll assume that was unintentional. No law was broken. Not trespassing. Not copyright infringement. Not theft of service. Not breach of contract. Nothing. The part about notification was referring to a specific contract between the purchaser and Regal, a condition of the contract. Not about law. - mizzrym, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's not. Regal wanted even more punishment.
- Absinthminded64, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Are you expecting an answer?
- Hungryhaney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You should be made to "string" together these 20 second clips and then have to watch it ...
A 20 second recording certainly falls under fair use. Especially if it's done with a crappy resolution cell phone camera. - Matthew720, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It really doesn't matter. Not knowing the law doesn't excuse one from taking responsibility for breaking said law.
- kirk06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I worked at a Regal for two years as a regular employee and another year on top of that as a manager. Especially in management, I learned to hate everything about that company...and while this girl did break the law, it goes to show you how petty Regal is and what great lengths they'll go to in order to make a buck off of someone.
There were times that customers tried to, for instance, get a large cup for ice water because they could not drink soda and didn't want bottled water or one of the tiny 'courtesy cups'. We were forced to tell them it would cost them $4 to give them even just the cup, because it was the cup the price was for...not the drink. If we ended up giving them the cup in the interest of customer service, the district manager/corporate would send a couple nasty emails to us. BUT, if we refused to give the cup to the person, they would send a comment card to corporate and then we'd get chewed out because we DIDN'T give them the cup.
Yes, it's happened. - Yang1205, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I dont know where you live, but in FL they have signs posted.
- Matthew720, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I think the law should be changed. Charging someone with a crime for recording 20 seconds out of an 8400 second movie is ludicrous. There clearly was no intent on her part to bootleg, distribute, and or profit from the recording.
- StarlessKnight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What if 1 person made a 20 second recording of a film .. and then showed it to someone else as a teaser? "What if" is fun and all, but Regal needs to prove she was part of a Conspiracy to pirate the entire film by part if they're going that route.
- MrRedneck, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7This one actually shows the punishment, and I don't think the other one did. Anyway, it's good that she wasn't jailed, or anything, and I agree with Fr00sh.. they do need to take a step back.
- vornan19, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That sounds like a Movement. To be effective you'd want to get the majority of people in the feature in on the plan. It'd be more effective if you could organize the people to do this say, for a whole day, or the whole afternoon. Just enough to make it noticeable. Everyone should be coached to say a short line of why they are doing such, or a flyer to leave in the theatre. Something like that.
Anyways, like I said: Sounds like a Movement. - fLUx1337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Next time somebody gets fined, lets all pay 1p/1cent towards the fund, and make sure the MPAA/RIAA/whoever knows that they would fine/sue somebody $100k, but it wouldnt matter, nobody would really take the bill, just donate a few seconds of their income.........
- Netrilix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Heh, I used to always go to Regal Cinemas, because that's all that was available in the area. Recently, a new theatre opened up, can't think of the name, but it finally made me realize how outdated Regal is. The new one is all digital, so you don't get all the cigarette marks and scratches of film, and the resolution itself is much better. I'll never go back to another Regal now that the new one is open.
- egotripping, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Are the comments in this thread a joke.
- dictatortot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5how many of you people actually follow through with your righteous boycotts?
- subat0mic, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4while it's ***** up. $71 is a pretty fair penalty for doing something we all know we shouldn't - taking recording devices into a theatre and actually turning them on... pretty dubious to think that's ok anyway.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5The police are there to protect corporations, not you.
- theoallardyce, on 10/10/2007, -4/+6It doesn't matter if the fine is $71 or $1 its the principle - the police wont even turn up to some burglaries or vandalism cases but they'll waste hours of their time on this crap?
- ICSU, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes but fair use does not cover taking these bits in cinemas.
- BETA7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2times like this im glad i dont live in the states
- holyskeleton, on 10/10/2007, -9/+11disgusting.
- techmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You're stupid. ;)
- subat0mic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2all fairuse arguments aside of course... while we know we _should_ be able to record tiny clips for fun, we know theres hired goons waiting in the theatre looking for ***** like that... to actually turn on a camera in a theatre is nieve, stupid, or you're being a political martyr (kind of stupid anyway)...
- wshs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4What wrong did she do? Cite title and section for bonus points.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As silly as we think it is, copying IS the same as stealing in the eyes of the law, and if you're going to break that law then you should expect possible consequences. Claiming ignorance just makes you look stupid.
- Bahimiron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I hate Regal.
They took over the AMC by Fenway Park here in Boston and turned what was my favorite theater into a miserable *****. - MassiveTaTas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They charged her more than $71 for popcorn and a coke.
- ITinNYC, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4They ask you again and again not to record anything in the theater while the movie is playing. Is she retarded? stupid? ignorant?
No she is just disregarding and doing what she wants. If everybody were to do whatever they wanted we would have anarchy. To penalize is not making an example of it is just using the law to its fullest extent. - MakinBacon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I've had enough of this story too... but the bottom line is: she did something illegal, she got caught, she pleaded guilty, she has to accept the consequenses. Enough with people blaming Regal Cinemas. If Regal doesn't push for a prosecution, then the film studios will consider them unwilling to help fight film theft and stop giving them new films. It's Paramount, Fox, Universal, Disney, Warner Bros., and Sony who are to blame. And no, I don't work for Regal Cinemas. I live in Canada and we don't even have Regal Cinemas here.
