12. You didnt notice there are only 10 facts. - BingoPower, on 05/16/2009, -4/+34"you're"
- 68024, on 05/16/2009, -2/+27In fact when you said "Your checking it now" I wasn't checking it right then, I was reading your sentence "Your checking it now". Which should have said "You're".
- Choobie, on 05/16/2009, -2/+21Isn't Angels and Demons the prequel to the Da Vinci code? Or rather that it takes place before the Da Vinci code but neither story has anything to do with the other so it doesn't matter entirely what order you tell them in?
Dan Brown isn't really that great of an author by the way. I swear he uses a template for every single one of his books (oh hey, like Nickleback!). I gave up on him after reading three of his books. - fxu1989, on 05/16/2009, -3/+20I didn't smile until you said I smiled.
SORCERER!!!!! BURN HIM!!!!!!! - kiddcode, on 05/16/2009, -3/+19Suspend your disbelief and have a little fun. It's fiction - it's supposed to be made-up.
- Balanced, on 05/16/2009, -0/+15Nickleback writes books?
- HP844182, on 05/16/2009, -1/+16Get out of my head!
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -7/+22Jesus Christ just watch the movie and enjoy it.
- bdfariello, on 05/16/2009, -2/+12Oh hey, an atheist Digger! You really showed anyone who chooses to believe that their belief system, which is lacking any evidentiary support, is completely and utterly unfounded with your own glaring lack of evidentiary support.
The only thing as bad as the religious extremist is the anti-religious extremist. - absentmindedjwc, on 05/16/2009, -1/+11I am more disturbed by the article spreading misinformation and fear about CERN "creating a black hole and destroying the planet." Not going to happen, with media types spreading this kind of garbage, it gets people scared for no reason. (leading to death threats and assaults on scientists)
- StarlessKnight, on 05/16/2009, -0/+9I'd stay away from the Historical Fiction section of the bookstore, then. Some authors like to go off the deep end.
- fairy88, on 05/16/2009, -0/+9I read Angels and Demons and Da Vinci Code, they were ok when I was 16, and Angels and Demons is the better book. I attempted to read Deception Point, but it was so samey and didn't have the religious intrigue of the others, I didn't get past the first chapter, and I won't be trying it again.
And it really is annoying me how the trailers and all other promotional stuff for Angels and Demons is saying its the sequel, when its not! Brown even mentions events from Angels and Demons in Da Vinvi Code, I know this is the film universe and not the book universe, but come on! There are only 2 books in this series, you could at least get them n the right order
Rant over - SarcasticGenius, on 05/16/2009, -1/+9No surprise that "facts" that make up the storyline is inaccurate, the Da Vinci Code was the same way. Even though it's a fiction novel, at least use the facts of people/place/event correctly.
- absentmindedjwc, on 05/16/2009, -1/+9spoken like someone that didnt see the movie.
There is a lot of religious history talked about in the movie, but the good professor admits to being atheist and does not waver from that position - Balanced, on 05/16/2009, -0/+8I think the point is that idea is covered by anthropology as meanings differ by culture. For example, 'snake' tends to have negative connotations in a lot of cultures with heavy judeochristian influence(from the Garden of Eden story) but snakes are much more positive in, say, several native american cultures.
Basically, 'Symbology' is kind of a made-up specialty. But it's fiction, so it's OK. - chukd, on 05/16/2009, -0/+7Yes, Angels and Demons was written before the DaVinci Code. It also takes place in a time line before the DaVinci code.
- kingmanic, on 05/16/2009, -0/+7Books like this are written to make a quick buck by authors who don't know much and like to pretend reading other fiction books is research. If you want interesting and well researched alternative histories read Neil Stephenson. If you want poorly researched tripe with a paint by numbers plot and flaccid characterization read dan brown.
- Zarokima, on 05/16/2009, -0/+6Everyone knows Lincoln was a steampunk robot in disguise waiting for his chance to rise to overlord status.
- TyrannousDotNet, on 05/16/2009, -2/+8wait... your telling me movies take facts and use them in their fictitious stories?!?! NO WAY.
- jamesrl, on 05/16/2009, -1/+6The author of the article wrote the whole anti-matter thing idiotically.
(a) 1 oz of antimatter (annililating with 1 oz of normal matter); would be about as destructive than a 1 Megaton atomic bomb. The US has made atomic weapons of up to 25 megatons.
(b) 1 oz of antimatter corresponds to 10^28 positrons (anti-electrons), or 10^25 anti-protons or anti-neutrons.
(c) The LHC at CERN will make ~10^7 antiprotons per second, so to make 1 oz you would need to wait 32 billion years (for comparison the universe is about 13.7 billion years old; the earth is ~4 billion years old, humanity has been around for 0.0002 billion years, and particle accelerators around for 0.00000007 billion years). It also should be noted that the LHC uses about 10% of the world's supply of helium, so you could at most have 10 LHCs operating, and then you'd be able to only have to wait 3 billion years before you'd have an anti-matter bomb. [That's after you come up with a way to store the anti-matter, which does not currently exist.]
(d) Creating anti-matter is incredibly inefficient, as basically you are just slamming normal matter into normal matter at high energies, knowing that some fraction of the time anti-matter will be created. E.g., the energy out as anti-matter mass is about 10^-10 the energy put in.
(e) Her figure 1772 trillion for an ounce of anti-matter bomb doesn't make sense as there is no way to scale up current technologies, or to store it. - Nickedynick, on 05/16/2009, -0/+5"...probably because of the lousy press from the Catholic Church that followed "The Da Vinci Code," this film played nice with Catholicism's major domos."
Ok, let's ignore the fact that both films were based on books, and that Angels and Demons was published before The Da Vinci Code... - Lykil, on 05/16/2009, -3/+8But it's such a terrible movie...
- bdfariello, on 05/16/2009, -0/+5Yeah, I read Deception Point and Digital Fortress, both of which were kind of interesting, but they really did feel eerily similar to Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code.
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+4But that's his point: You can't "interpret" or "decipher" symbols. They're symbolic. They have no inherent meaning and you NEED a link to that culture to have ANY idea what it means. We had NO idea what hieroglyphics meant and we would NEVER have been able to figure it out without the Rosetta Stone. There is no science to figuring out what symbols mean, you have to be told by someone who already knows.
Thus, you can't teach the subject and by extension Robert Langdon is a ***** doctor. - alarion, on 05/16/2009, -2/+6Movies like this, rather books like this, are created to pose alternate views on history. Not necessarily "accurate" views, but it is supposed to open your mind a little to the possibility the history as you were taught isn't 100% accurate either. That being said, it's also meant to be fiction and enjoyed as such. If you want to investigate the "claims" made by these types of movies/books, then please do so - you might learn something you didn't know.
- Petmc, on 05/16/2009, -2/+6deadbabyjoke, you are not an agnostic. An agnostic would simply say, "I don't know if there is a God, heaven, or hell, and I honestly don't care."
You seem to claim you know there is no god, heaven, or hell. You are an athiest.
I've been agnostic since even before you were diagnosed with autism. - StarlessKnight, on 05/16/2009, -1/+4Your step 11 (which is, technically step 9) is flawed. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I was on to your game, sir!
- emptyo, on 05/16/2009, -1/+41 fact about you:
1. You didn't pay attention in English class. - Kennui, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3Thank god they dont.
- appleofdischord, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3People care because the movie takes shots at the catholic church. Some people naturally take offense to that - especially when the shots aren't based in fact.
There were a lot of idiots who believed everything in The Da Vinci Code was true. - paulvq, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3Angels and Demons is a prequel as a book, but they retold the movie as a sequel. The major Catholic characters in the A&D movie make references to the events in the Da Vinci Code and how Langdon embarassed the church.
- bedake, on 05/16/2009, -1/+4Templates? Oh, like Tom Clancy and Stephen King?
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3An honest troll? No wonder you use Michael Bolton as your avatar.
- MasterGrief, on 05/16/2009, -0/+3Dan Brown's almost become a parody of himself. I was in a Barnes and Noble a few days ago and I saw a sign hung up for his new book. Its title? The Lost Symbol. It's like he's not even trying anymore.
- CaptObvious, on 05/16/2009, -1/+3You forgot "You're digging me down"
- Larssonk22, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2well duh
- aaabbbsss, on 05/16/2009, -1/+3like a fork in my thigh. glad i wasn't the only one.
- robdiggity, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2Yeah it's really pretty bad.
Spoiler:
Somebody in the theater shouted "Awww ***** this!" when Obi Wan parachuted from the copter.
Additional spoiler:
My personal favorite was when they had JUST USED the bolt-cutters to cut the chains to get into the church where that one Cardinal was strung up by chains and burning to death, and they're all like "How do we get him down?!?"
Movie ate my balls. - Herostratus, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2~FTW~
- inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2Why not? Reality can't seem to catch a break from the people who believe in fiction.
- mangee, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2christianity != Vatican, but agree minus the "mantra of christianity" bit.
But then I'm biased away from the vatican. - mKdiR, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2dude, im stoned and you just ***** blew my mind
- Stumbler1210, on 05/16/2009, -1/+3I believe the term you're looking for is "symbolism."
- mangee, on 05/16/2009, -0/+2...Have you seen "The Daddy Goose Collection" by Vivian French ;) http://www.doublecluck.com/bookdetails.php?bid=101 Great little supplement to Mother Goose. Completely off topic.
Been listening to the Dan Brown audio book version. Got my Grain of Salt still. - inactive, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Petmc, you shouldn't make fun of autism. To do so would be cold, callous and bring you down the same level as the person you are trying to chastise. I doubt the intelligent members of the agnostic community would want to associate with someone like that.
- tmyprod, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1"They've got the huge underground particle accelerator that was supposed to create a black hole and swallow the earth last fall, until an accident took everything offline. Cross your fingers for this fall, when they start the accelerator up again."
Buried as *****. - ganjadude4391, on 05/16/2009, -1/+2Great boondock saints quote
- Kennui, on 05/16/2009, -0/+1Thought we were above that (and him)
- CanIGetAWitness, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1FTA "They've got the huge underground particle accelerator that was supposed to create a black hole and swallow the earth last fall, until an accident took everything offline. Cross your fingers for this fall, when they start the accelerator up again.) "
I think it would be funny if the atom crasher undergoes another delay and isn't scheduled to go back online until December 12, 2012.
Cmon, lighten up, you would laugh too. -
