- solid12345, on 01/02/2009, -0/+52Does my house have a sign outside it that says "Dead Nazi Storage"? No, because storing dead Nazis is not my job!
- michaelpinto, on 01/02/2009, -1/+38A. Inglourious Basterds is the correct spelling of the film:
"In Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis." - JoeSpaceTime, on 01/02/2009, -3/+25I didn't know he was expecting. Congratulations, I guess...
- Richandler, on 01/02/2009, -2/+21Tarantino and Pitt? Really?
- BillDauterive, on 01/02/2009, -6/+24Anything tarantino does is an instant classic. Can't wait.
- scotus55, on 01/02/2009, -0/+16Samuel L. Jackson's jerry curl doo would've done more to spread fear throughout the Third Reich.
- HaSatan, on 01/02/2009, -2/+15Now let me ask you a question, Sergeant Jules. When you drove in here, did you notice a sign out in front that said, "Dead German storage"?"
- redrabbit, on 01/02/2009, -0/+12He's in it as The Narrator.
- michaelpinto, on 01/02/2009, -4/+16digforadig: Yes I'd like to see QT return to the crime genre again — I think with a recession that theme would do well. He does action well — but it's his character dev. that wins me over.
- redrabbit, on 01/02/2009, -0/+11He only steals from the best!
- dekuscrub, on 01/02/2009, -1/+12I absolutely love all of his movies. The guy is batting 1000 in my book. I will go see this one without question.
- redrabbit, on 01/02/2009, -1/+11Very easy to find the script to this online. I started reading it, saying I only wanted to see what it was like, but I ended up reading the whole thing. It's great! (and will be bloody as hell!)
and B.J. Novak from the Office is in it! - Wolfspirittt, on 01/02/2009, -1/+9That was probably one of the most stupidest comments I have ever read. I like the cult classics like Pulp Fiction etc. as much as the next guy but that doesn't mean that anything else is garbage. There are quite a few "mainstream" movies that are very good.
- Cglass, on 01/02/2009, -0/+8I wonder if he ***** memories.
- DirtyVicar, on 01/02/2009, -1/+8Well he's got a point. You never hear anything about the brutality suffered by Roma, the Ukrainians, and the Poles, and their stories aren't told by Hollywood. But the Holocaust gets covered about every 2 to 3 years.
- Spoomeister, on 01/02/2009, -0/+7Hm, let's look through the list of actresses for this one...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361748/
Knowing QT's fetishes, here's guessing that we're going to see a giant closeup of Maggie Cheung's feet at some point in the movie. Or if he's feeling generous, Diane Kruger's. Or if he's feeling cruel, Cloris Leachman's. - drlha, on 01/02/2009, -0/+7Yes.
- shibagarden, on 01/02/2009, -2/+9Finally, a high-profile movie other than another tedious comic book adaptation to look forward to in '09!
- Cglass, on 01/02/2009, -0/+6Look, on the internet we call people be their real names, in this case the temp.
- mrdirtnap, on 01/02/2009, -6/+11lol... you cause 'cause brutally killing and terrorizing anyone is ok as long as they are the bad guy. whom ever they tell us that is this week. People seem to forget that all soldiers have families somewhere and when they die people are going to miss them and families are broken.
this reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from a WWII commander that was tasked with *bombing* tokyo. not knowing how to get the japanese to end the war (aka give up) they studied the capital city and found that most old building were made of wood and flamable substance. so he was ordered to fire bomb the muther f*. they burned it to the ground, it was literally hell fire when the winds picked up and fueled the fires. more people died because of that than the a-bomb. Anyhow he said after the war that if we would have lost, he would be tried as a war criminal for what he did. It goes to show, the winners write history, the losers suck it.
this movie sounds like a BS glory film like the crap remake of the book "We were soldiers once.. and young". my favorite part of that movie is the end when mel gibson gets in the choppa and shoots the enemy with the guns and rockets. yeah, that happened.... - Mpwns, on 01/02/2009, -8/+13who did he steal this movie from?
- danwallace, on 01/02/2009, -0/+4From IMDB:
Is this a remake of Inglorious Bastards (aka Quel maledetto treno blindato, by Enzo Castellari) ?
EditHistoryDelete
No. While Quentin Tarantino is a huge fan of this macaroni combat classic, and the two films share the same English title, Tarantino's film has long since evolved from being a similar men-on-a-mission war film to something very different. - TheNik, on 01/02/2009, -0/+4(Nazi occupied France)
- Cheesasaurus, on 01/02/2009, -1/+5I don't need you to tell me how ***** good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it, I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping, she buys *****.
- etruscan, on 01/02/2009, -0/+4I don't think Tarantino and "mainstream" will ever coalesce. Even his most mainstream effort to date, Kill Bill, was still a fairly cult picture. Having said that, however... I've kind of lost hope for Tarantino. He had the gift, used it to create Dogs and Fiction, to write True Romance - but Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, and all his side projects, they just don't have the same flare.
Still, a WWII picture by Tarantino? - that has me a little giddy with hope. - Gerz1219, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3The problem for Tarantino is that none of his "cult" movies have been particularly cheap to produce. Grindhouse cost well north of $100 million and completely bombed, and I think Kill Bill only broke even. Despite his indie rep, Tarantino has never been the sort of guerrilla filmmaker who can string a movie together with $40,000 in credit card debt -- he needs too much control over his set. And he's not going to get the studios to keep bankrolling expensive failures directed at a small audience, so he needs to do a sell-out movie if we want him to keep working.
- friggatry, on 01/02/2009, -1/+4American cinema by and large keeps getting more and more formulaic and redundant, but Tarantino's movies are always entertaining and engaging. I'll be first in line to see this one.
- dalittle, on 01/02/2009, -2/+5They made the jewish point several times in saving private ryan. Jewish grave stone. Hitler youth knife handed to a jewish soldier. Not necessary for the film and in there.
- redrabbit, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3Le Big Mac
(it's set in France) - dekuscrub, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3He did not direct that one. He just wrote the screenplay.
- mikembley, on 01/02/2009, -0/+3"When is he going to make another Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs style movie?"
Probably never considering hes a clever guy, and the fact that just because Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs was popular does not mean he has to create another one. Hes mixing it up, and i prefer it that way.
Sequels usually turn into *****, unless they have a solid storyline. - MadHarvey, on 01/02/2009, -1/+4Neither of you actually THINK you have horrible taste, which you do. You think that you are right, which you aren't.
Just thought I would let you know... - cfuse, on 01/03/2009, -0/+3Great, the owners of the American film industry win World War II. Again. Why don't they just make a film where rabbi ninjas defeat the Viet Cong and win the Vietnam war?
- omarst, on 01/02/2009, -2/+4they shoot the film on my street xD
- damack, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2LOL that defines irony "most stupidest".
Interesting comments Gerz. The thing about trying to meet a larger demographic is a bit like the analogy "one size fits all". One size doesnt fit all and making a mainstream movie everybody can enjoy is generally a fruitless effort.
Some mainstream movies do turn out well but most of them suck because their stretched too thin. Problem is with the best directors they dont make movies to please a large demographic they put together what they feel is a masterpiece and you either enjoy it or not.
It's like Henry Ford said "If I asked my customers what they wanted they would have said a faster horse". I think Tarantino just needs to keep making what he feels is a good movie if he starts trying to please people then all hes going to do is start making crappy second rate movies designed to reach an audience of everybody from your grandmother to your kids. - aserer511, on 01/02/2009, -1/+3epic film is epic, although tarantino is definitely at a bit of a career slump, so we'll see how it does...
- Mossman85, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2Jules: So, tell me again about the hashbars?
Vincent: Okay, what you wanna know?
Jules: Hash is legal there right?
Vincent: Yeah, it's legal, but it ain't a hundred percent legal. I mean, you can't walk into a restaurant, roll a joint and start puffin' away. You're only supposed to smoke in your home or certain designated places.
Jules: And those are hashbars?
Vincent: It breaks down like this: it's legal to buy it, it's legal to own it, and, if you're the proprietor of a hash bar, it's legal to sell it. It's legal to carry it, but that doesn't really matter 'cause - get a load of this - if you get stopped by the cops in Amsterdam, it's illegal for them to search you. I mean, that's a right the cops in Amsterdam don't have.
Jules: [laughing] I'm going, that's all there is to it, I'm *****' going.
Vincent: Yeah baby, you'd dig it the most. - toledojon, on 01/02/2009, -2/+4I'm a huge fan of Tarantino's work, but must admit I am skeptical at how engaging he can make a "mainstream epic," as the article put it, about a World War II story. So much of Tarantino's charm comes from extensive and meticulous dialogue and nonlinear, original and artistic style.
- dracostimpy, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2An indignent curmudgin is you.
- Gerz1219, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Oh, I personally think it's going to be very good. The article just mentioned that it will be more mainstream than his last few movies. I was responding to damack's suggestion that Tarantino should make a few more Grindhouses instead of making something that a broader audience might want to watch. And I really liked Grindhouse! I can just totally see why it bombed.
And on a side note, I think Tarantino is selling out in a sense, because it's pretty clear that he would prefer to just indulge his narrow fetishes on-screen. Selling out will cause Tarantino to make better work. - AmazingSteve, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2Umm he's been working on this movie since 2001.
- DuffyDirect, on 01/02/2009, -1/+3how many jewish world war 2 movies do their need to be? didn't one just come out? why not one about poland or lithuania or finland or something other than normandy and jews?
- TheNik, on 01/02/2009, -0/+2How would Inglourious Basterds be a sell-out movie? It sounds amazing and has a great cast - does that make it a sell-out movie?
- DuffyDirect, on 01/03/2009, -0/+2the holocaust and world war 2 are not the same thing
- TheNik, on 01/02/2009, -1/+3Because the mortality rate amongst other groups - combined - didn't equal that of the Jewish genocide.
@DirtyVicar: The Holocaust is a blanket term and is used by (essentially) everyone to describe the Nazi-led genocide, not specific to the "Final Solution." The Roma people don't have a strong reliance on written history and, as a group, are quiet about the events.
I think the Jews are also more exemplified because of their helplessness in the matter. Because they are strictly an ethnic/religious group they had no central authority or government of their own - they were simply a group of people that were spread out over the entire continent. The Poles and Ukrainians, however, were _generally_ citizens of Poland. They had a governmental body designed to protect them that failed. Obviously these other groups suffered, but not at the same amount nor in the same context as the Jews. - danwallace, on 01/02/2009, -5/+7Just a thought, but that may be related to a little event called the Holocaust. The genocide of six million people tends to be remembered. At least it does when the U.S. gets involved.
Or you know, it could also be your crazy racist theory. - Azerael, on 01/02/2009, -2/+4Your mom.
- blacktriangle, on 01/02/2009, -1/+3Usually Blacksploitation films, but this time who knows.
- UrinalPooper, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1Planet Terror was Robert Rodgriguez... Tarantino directed Death Proof.
