Prequel/Sequel for Movie "300" is Moving Forward

slashfilm.com — Earlier today, we reported on the race to the screen between two new Greek mythology epics inspired by 300. The flip side of this news is that both director Zack Snyder and 300 producers, Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari confirmed to Collider at the Saturn Awards that a 300 sequel/prequel is finally bubbling.

I also detested the scenes in Sparta after Leonidus had left, as they added almost nothing to the plot.

    • zacharytelschow, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1I liked that the movie was over the top, which is why I was pissed it didn't maintain that bravado all the way to the end (the fact that my desire for the movie to continue its ridiculousness and historical accuracy aligned was mere coincidence). If I wanted a documentary, I would have watched the History Channel's "Rise and Fall of the Spartans," which I would highly recommend, by the way.

It is based on a comic book, that was based on another movie (the 300 spartans), which in turn was based off the real events. It's 3 times removed from the real thing, yet that's the biggest complaint i hear from people.

    Hollywood as usual doesn't 'get it' -- you get a hit like "300" you don't crank out a buncha clones, you get stories similiar, but different enough to be just as exciting.

    Were *I* a studio head, I'd get Frank Miller and Zach Snyder to do a film, "300" style, about Agincourt (the big battle from "Henry V" -- you know where a thousand outgunned english Longbowmen totally decimated french crossbowmen and knights. ) But never mind, we'll get another toga and sandalfest.

      The Battle of Thermopylae was during a changing point in greek history. Greece was a bunch of city-states that would sometimes war with each other.
      There are plenty of stories to be told before that event(and also a couple after) if they hire good writers AND good historians.

Hell, even if you deviated from the made up history, you could make a movie based on what really happened and the naval battle that was happening at the same exact time this "300" battle took place.

One of the things that sealed the deal for me as well was when the queen knifed the traitor in the senate, the audience was so caught up in the film by that point that everyone cheered for her.

However, they'll have to come up with some new cinematography and editing techniques to keep it fresh. If they reuse the old style it will have the stale "it's been done" feel written all over it.

I accepted it because it was actually very very well done, also had some historic facts in it. And young people watching the movie most likely were curious about the story behind the 300 movie and did some research and learned something!

    And now they just take a big ***** on history and suddenly its a "hero" movie with a sequel?....sigh.....the movie business is such crap.

They racialized a conflict that wasn't racial, because most American viewers today couldn't tell the difference between a Greek and a Persian. But instead, they made the Greeks obviously white and the Persians obviously not white, despite them both being different shades of olive.

        I didn't just rag on Americans. I just ragged on the creators of 300 who decided to racialize the conflict. I don't think not being able to tell the difference between Greeks and Persians to be a particularly detrimental fault. Most of the world couldn't do that, they look very similar, and that was completely not the point of my post.

    Instead of making a sequel/prequel, they should just apply the same style and technique to a new idea. The story of Thermopylae (sp?) has been told and re-told since before Jesus was born. The reason I went to see 300 is because it had a similar comic-book style as Sin City. The story didn't make that movie popular. The style did.
