- h8red42, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12i cant blame these directors for cashing in,hell i would.what we as consumers have to do is learn to recognize the turds before we step in them.
- Jo9100, on 07/15/2009, -0/+9The Game: If you haven't already seen it, do it right now. It'll blow your mind. Seriously.
- SKLOKAZOID, on 07/15/2009, -2/+10Brokeback Mountain came after "HULK." If anything, it was Ang Lee proving HULK didn't ruin him at all. But, yeah, HULK probably did get Ang Lee a new pool.
Also...
"When Soderbergh made Ocean's 11 in 2001 you could fill an Olympic sized pool with the art house tears. But Ocean's was crowd-pleasing pop at it's best."
pop at it IS best? ITS best! ITS! - CB810, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6Taraneninto? Someone needs a proofreader...
- DThatsMe, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Big Fish is pretty good.
- keysersozejr, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Gawkers level of journalism continues to lower the bar for an industry with abhorrent quality issues. Gabriel Snyder and Ryan Tate, the so called editors of this piece, are either incompetent or have little to no pride in the product they produce.
Gawker media is the National Enquirer of the tech world. - cannonball, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7Most pretentious article I've read all day.
Dugg. - babyheadout, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I enjoyed this better when it was the Sick Boy Theory.
(Trainspotting) - Calculon, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Did the writer of this article fail English? That's unpossible!
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3typical ***** from peopel whjo think that the fact that they like non-mainstream movies means they have better taste in movies.
Art house movies are no better inherently than blockbuster movies. - Neville007, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3I wouldn't call "The good German" a pool flick. It wasn't good, but it wasn't comercial or accesible either, and IIRC it was a flop. Neither the first "Ocean's 11", which was well made and entertaining. But the "Ocean's 11" sequels, instead...
- bryantee, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Reservoir Dogs made more than twice the modest budget at the box office. I think Tarantino's earnings easily would get him a spectacular pool in his first film. Bottom line: you can still make cool movies that are ultimately profitable.
- mattwalton56, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3I LOST!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU - bryantee, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4Eh, that movie was surprisingly good.
- Jeebugorn, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2was a pretty good movie.
- JackSrenton, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2 If a movies bad the director is automatically doin it for the money wtf?
People make bad movies that they still believe in. What a douchey article. - david4041, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2IIRC, the studio let Spielberg make "Shindler's List" if he did "Jurassic Park."
- xenos23, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Actually, I kind of liked "The Good German." If I had to choose, though, I'd pick "The Third Man" to spend a couple of hours in the world of film noir .
- maqikelefant, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Tarenintendo.
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1The Documentary?
- undy242, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I don't think Lucky You worked out so well for Curtis Hanson. And Steve Soderbergh still does excellent work, although I haven't seen the Good German and probably never will.
And I wonder if I'm in the minority here at Digg but I thought Demme's Rachel Getting Married was excellent. - travisMarc, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1The game is on digg? (***** i just lost the other game writing that, he is right though see it)
- Niedin, on 07/15/2009, -4/+5I would call making a biography about Eminem starring Eminem during his peak years a "pool movie."
- BriskT, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Generally I would agree, but the movies listed in the article had the distinction of being mainstream and horrible. I mean "Truth About Charlie"? That was a steaming pile of crap.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0http://digg.com/television/TV_Cranium_Commercial_C ... - go digg it's real!
- dodonoghue, on 07/15/2009, -2/+2He forgot Tim Burton - Plannet of the Apers, Big Fish, Willy Wonka,Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd
- 4AntiStupid, on 07/15/2009, -0/+0I think all those where good except Planet of the Apes and Willy Wonka.. I don't think they were sellouts though. Willy Wonka was a bad vision, and Planet of the Apes suffered from Tim Burton's problem of focusing on making a ton of great shots but not on fitting them together into a good story.
- 4AntiStupid, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0This is the one I was talking about: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119174/
- inactive, on 07/15/2009, -2/+2This would be funny if it were true, but in actuality directors do these kinds of movies to build up film studio capital so they CAN make their smaller indy movies. Can't continue getting funding if all you put out is art house films.
- MadHarvey, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1He has made a few bad movies (Big Fish, Corpse Bride, and Sweeny Todd aren't bad).
But his pool movie in my opinion is Mars Attacks! - BriskT, on 07/16/2009, -2/+1Brokeback Mountain doesn't really qualify as a pool movie, but it was pretty awful.
- barth2k, on 07/15/2009, -2/+1stupid article. all those directors continue to make a mix of popular and less commercial films. e.g.: Sodenberg made Ocean 11/12/13 but also made Bubbles, Girlfriend Experience, Che. Ang Lee made Hulk then Brokeback Mtn and Lust, Caution. Demme: Rachel Getting Married, various documentaries. Fincher: Zodiac.
Anyway, it's a good idea to make big budget studio pictures to keep yourself viable and funded. Plus I'm sure they get tired of making ultra serious movies all the time. Why not do something fun and frivolous? - 4AntiStupid, on 07/15/2009, -2/+0Yea, the game is worth a watch if you haven't seen it. It's even worth putting up with the Sean Penn bad acting.
- Mapekz, on 07/15/2009, -10/+2Uma in that picture gave me an instant hard on.
Quentin made me limper than Stephen Hawking's handshakes.
