- MercyPolitics, on 09/28/2008, -0/+39" Cool Hand Luke" is my favorite Newman's film, it is truly a master piece of American cinema.
- Slagtits, on 09/29/2008, -0/+16My boy says he can eat fifty eggs, he can eat fifty eggs.

"I was 17 when this film came out, and I wanted to be just like Paul Newman. For a generation, he was the epitome of cool.
40 years later I still want to be like him. He will be remembered as the embodiment of class and heart.
I have rarely if ever felt so saddened by the death of someone I don't know personally.
Sweet dreams, Paul. You are irreplaceable and the world is a less beautiful place without you.
Thank you for a lifetime of memories. " - justdru, on 09/29/2008, -0/+13Very rarely can an actor captivate and awe a viewer by doing something as simple as singing a folk song. For some reason, Paul Newman always had the ability to make people listen, and it's that ability that I will miss about him most. RIP Mr. Newman!
- bobbknight, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8What we have here is a failure to communicate.
- ChronoMojo, on 09/29/2008, -2/+10What a fantastic film.
- bbart3d, on 09/29/2008, -1/+7He didn't lip sync it either, Man, that guy was great.

- 1uk34dd0, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I was named after Cool Hand Luke! :D
- ChayesFSS, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3His portrayal of no luck Luke was unbelievable. One of the best actors of his time.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3That scene was so sad already... I love that song.
That movie made me like a whole different style of music. Found people like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson because of it. - 1uk34dd0, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2"What we've got here is a failure to communicate." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_we%27ve_got_here ...
- Rhendal, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Actually I think it's the other way around, sir.
- LegoLooney27, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2My dad introduced me to the world of Paul Newman and his films and I prefer one of his classics over any new movie. Cool Hand Luke would have to my favorite, though. He will be missed.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I think he's trying to call you an anti-dentite or something.
bernk: Leave him be. He was pointing out a simple bit of trivia.
It's no different than someone pointint out a story about Richard Gere putting gerbils in his ass and then someone saying "Wow, I didn't know Gere was a Buddhist too." - boogie606, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2"Hombre" is my favorite..."Hey? how you getting back down that hill?"
- Carramrod72, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Always been one of my favorite scenes... Actually, just about every scene in that movie is a classic scene...

- flashingcurser, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Please do, you'll be better for it.
- martin993, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1He was the best thing in Road To Perdition a few years back and always seemed like a decent bloke in interviews. Hell of a shame, but at least we've got all these great movies to remember him by.
- Cyberdactyl, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1You go Lucas Jackson.
- elarson, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2His dad was Jewish, not his mom.
- elarson, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1The one and only.
- jonellison13, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1This is quintessential Paul Newman for me. What an amazing character played by an amazing actor in an amazing movie.
RIP my friend. - rootsm3, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I feel like crying now.
- mrchucklepants, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Stay down! Your beat.

- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1'The Hustler' ain't exactly hay.
- esssential, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1thanks for this.
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1flog: A Jew is any person whose mother was a Jew or any person who has gone through the formal process of conversion to Judaism.
Being a Jew has nothing to do with what you believe or what you do. A person born to non-Jewish parents who has not undergone the formal process of conversion but who believes everything that Orthodox Jews believe and observes every law and custom of Judaism is still a non-Jew, even in the eyes of the most liberal movements of Judaism, and a person born to a Jewish mother who is an atheist and never practices the Jewish religion is still a Jew, even in the eyes of the ultra-Orthodox. In this sense, Judaism is more like a nationality than like other religions, and being Jewish is like a citizenship.

Houston band Fab Motion did a rock version of this song in the mid 1980s. It energized the dance floor (people still danced in front of the stage in those days). - inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I've been fortunate enough to meet Doc on numerous occassions and even more fortunate that I have been lucky enough to play guitar with him and even have one of his guitars which he was kind enough to sign.
I met Doc through Dakota Dave Hull.
Sadly, Doc is definitely on a hard road with a lot of health problems. - inactive, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Huh? You asked a question. I was just replying.
I couldn't care less what religion he was. He was a great actor and a great philanthropist. He had something to add to the world, unlike most.
I wasn't even the one to start the "he was Jewish" thread. I commented to someone saying "he was Jewish" then the followup commenting that his dad was Jewish and not his mom. That is when I added the part about Orthodox because some people were saying he wasn't Jewish due to his mother not being so.
Sorry for adding detail to a specific thread.
Let me ask you a question though. Why do you take offense to people saying he was Jewish? Does it bother you that someone is Jewish? Do you feel being labeled as a Jew is a bad thing?
Then you did a 180 and turned it into me saying he was "living a lie".
Oversensitive much? - inactive, on 09/29/2008, -2/+3I don't know what you're getting at.
- pooty2, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1Thank you Jack White, for that fiber-optic jesus that you gave me.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1johnny war hero ehh? : >
- SullonOne, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0For those who have not seen the movie, Luke is paying homage to his mother who just passed.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -3/+3flogistan - Paul Newman dies, and you comment: "He was jewish." And what is your point?
- Rhendal, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1This post deserves more diggs.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -2/+2What a loss...
Sad, just sad. - inactive, on 09/29/2008, -3/+3No point. I just thought it was an interesting fact about a much admired actor at his passing. I didn't know it until a few days ago and would have never expected it. He wasn't ashamed about it. Why does it bother you that I point out something about him he was proud of?
- inactive, on 09/30/2008, -1/+1So even though paul just died, you are claiming that he had lived a lie? What are you saying? That he claimed to be jewish so it would be easier to get parts in movies in hollywood? Give him some respect.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -2/+2Are the majority orthodox? Paul would have disagreed with you. Do orthodox jews refuse all conversions under all circumstances of those who don't meet the right criteria? That's an honest question out of curiosity.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -3/+2The average person is not as stupid as you seem to think.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -3/+2flogistan - cut the nonsense. You know exactly what I mean.
- newbis, on 09/29/2008, -2/+1A friend of a friend is in a band that did a cover of this song. Look for Johnny O and the Jerks' album. Something like "Taking out the Trashability."
