You should judge the success of movies not by your personal tastes, but whether a specific population appreciates the type of movie that is released. With a billion native people + more viewers in South Asia, South East Asia & Middle East - Bollywood has a large base & stronger growth opportunities.
They just need to change their name (call it Mumbai), otherwise they will be in the shadow of Hollywood by default. - ramzavala, on 11/25/2008, -3/+12and Bollywood has done what lately or ever???

- richirwin, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4Really? I guess he didn't care for the "Dukes of Hazzard" movie.
- BluBerryGTI, on 11/25/2008, -8/+12are you serious Bollywood.... come on
- HouseofEl, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4It must be a cultural difference. I just don't understand the musical aspect to these films. It seems so out of place, but I guess it's not so out of place to residents of India? Paul Schrader has written some great stuff, but he's also made some terrible films. I don't really care if he goes to India. It would be nice to see other countries get some commercial success in terms of movie making, but I don't know if audiences will ever accept Bollywood's style. Then again, High School Musical 3 made a ton of cash, so who knows.
- DanteDefiance, on 11/25/2008, -4/+7Having seen multiple Bollywood movies, I can definitly say this is a horrible...horrible idea. Bollywood movies suck.
Also, 90% of their movies are remade American trash.
P.S. For huge laughs, please see the Indian Professional. - dse78759, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3That must hurt.
- SemiSarcastic, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3Extreme City - explosions with a musical dance number!
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2It will be big challenge for him. He need to understand indian culture deeply to make a remarkable movie. That itself will take two years. Lemme tell you that people in India rarely go for a crap.
- ktervalon, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2This is either gonna be really scary or really awesome!!
- thepeacemaker, on 11/25/2008, -1/+3Bollywood films may lag far behind Hollywood films in terms of special effects, realism, subtlety, and variety. But the over-the-top colorful melodrama is exactly what the people in South Asia want and expect from their movies. Comparing the two is like comparing apples and baseballs ...two totally different things serving two different needs.
Here's a funny caricature (by a British comedian) of an Indian movie actor doing Hindi movie scenes:

- scoottie, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1After twlight broke records of course people will see the American film industry as barren
- binchaud, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1What gave it away?
The "India" or the "***** YEA!"? - abajaj2280, on 11/25/2008, -6/+7People, have some respect for Bollywood please. If you aren't from the culture and have never watched the movies, don't give negative feedback.

That's why. - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -7/+8Can't blame him. Hollywood has been ***** lately.

I'm Indian and bollywood isn't a joke. - LocalDocal, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1No, my argument is not flawed. You failed to take into consideration repeat viewing, locales, economy, etc. Here's an example:
Scenario #1) Person A sees movie in Country A for $11 three times. $33 is made.
Scenario #2) Person A and Person B sees movie in Country A for $11 once. $22 is made.
Scenario #3) Person A and Person B sees movie in Country B for $3 once. $6 is made.
A simplified example, but I think you should get the point. It has nothing to do with what Indian moviegoers prefers (as I said, people tend to view movie success in terms of money made or awards won, not how many people seen it) and you may not like the idea that a movie made more money simply because of locale, but it's reality. - induren, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1So, in Indian films, and other asian ones, high sexual tension or romantic emotion is conveyed with dance. It's annoying as heck.
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -0/+1Better then the same prolefeed shoved out of Hollywood.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -2/+3i'm indian and bollywood is the biggest joke ever.
- JerkNowitzki, on 11/26/2008, -1/+2Yeah, of course Bollywood sucks, we need more movies of a white guy like Vince Vaughn and another white guy like Will Ferrell doing something cute and funny, like trying to win a bowling tournament, becoming big brothers for kids, or crashing wedding parties. Then insert a girl that's way too hot for either of them and watch hilarity ensue with plenty of beer, fart and penis jokes!!! Oh man, how could Bollywood possible top something soooo ingenious??? Or better yet, Rob Schneider as THE STAPLER!!!!
- vurdillac, on 11/25/2008, -0/+1He made one of my favorite Japanese films (Mishima), so maybe he can make a watchable Bollywood film, too.
- LocalDocal, on 11/25/2008, -1/+1Hate to break it to you, 'Binchaud', but most people judge the success of a movie based on the amount of money it made or the awards it wins, not how many people have seen it.
- B3000, on 11/25/2008, -1/+1Paul Schrader has been ***** for years.
Did anyone see his awful Exorcist prequel? It's not wonder the studio scrapped it and had the whole thing re-shot. (Although, they could have chosen someone who didn't suck just as bad to do the job) - GiJoeBob, on 11/25/2008, -2/+2All their leading ladies look like Sophia Loren. Yummy!
- Cymrubeats, on 11/25/2008, -0/+0That clip kicks ass!!
- k3rfuffl3, on 11/25/2008, -2/+2I'm sure you're not unbiased, "binchaud." That, if I recall correctly, is Hindi for "sister *****."
- pappy97, on 11/26/2008, -0/+0Bollywood movies could do well in the US, but only the ones that are centered around romance. Those, like Kal Ho Naa Ho, for example, would go over really well to American Female Audiences. I'm surprised Oprah hasn't been pimping any of these types of Bollywood flicks yet. I guess the Bollywood studios have not wised up to the fact that Oprah = cash in the US
- binchaud, on 11/26/2008, -1/+1Your argument is flawed.
According to you success is based on the amount of money a movie makes (and not the amount of people who watch it). Those two actually have a direct correlation. The more people who watch the movie means the more money it makes.
Now it might be tempting to fight back with an argument for currency exchange differences between gross box office ticket sales, but it still won't change the fact that indian moviegoers prefer bollywood movies.
Your tastes are just different. But High School Musical 1-3 should be an indication that you're not too far off either. - inactive, on 11/26/2008, -0/+0I haven't seen many Bollywood movies, but if this move gives some of those beautiful Indian actresses more exposure in the U.S., I'm all for it.
- FMVorenkamp, on 11/26/2008, -0/+0Oh yes, because Bollywood is turning out classic after classic.
- k9unit, on 11/25/2008, -2/+1He has no choice he probably got laid off in Hollywood
- KevinRosa, on 11/25/2008, -2/+1If his new stuff was good it would get financial support anywhere. He just want it the easy way.
- hkarthik, on 11/25/2008, -2/+1He should get this guy to act in his Indian version of Taxi Driver.

- machambi, on 11/25/2008, -3/+1I am from the culture and have watched and enjoyed bollywood movies, but digg down for being a whiny b....
