- viserov, on 03/02/2008, -3/+84I get the point, HD-DVD is dead.
- mark076h, on 03/02/2008, -20/+91Also on Tuesday sony will release its first blue-ray dvd with a rootkit
- gypsi, on 03/02/2008, -3/+39yeah, and now this whole hd-dvd thing
- magicaltrevor, on 03/02/2008, -0/+21Another 'HD DVD is dead' article? Soon we'll be getting front page stories whenever someone tries to buy a player.
- fancyj, on 03/02/2008, -1/+22"Other Blu-ray backers are Sony Pictures..."
Good work, gumshoe! - mapez, on 03/02/2008, -5/+23Sucks to be Michael Bay.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -4/+22Your movie player beat out my game console in a movie player competition. Congrats.
- greenlight2001, on 03/02/2008, -5/+22SHUT THE ***** UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God, I HATE you people... - riskySalmon, on 03/02/2008, -2/+16You know if the 360 shipped HD-DVD players in them then the format would have had a much better chance.
- nolesfan247, on 03/02/2008, -0/+12Anyone else find it funny that eight months ago we were revolting FOR the cause of HD-DVD freedom (illegal usage, granted, but nevertheless)? The end of an era indeed.
- ahoyhoy1, on 03/02/2008, -1/+13Their Digg clone failed so now they spam Digg.
- HenvY, on 03/02/2008, -5/+16And they're only releasing them because they were in production before Toshiba's announcement it was dropping the format, in all probability.
- magicaltrevor, on 03/02/2008, -1/+12I think this is the wood polish.
- xbandaidx, on 03/02/2008, -13/+23Now they can finally release Transformers on Blu-ray.
- spookyttws, on 03/02/2008, -3/+13Sucks to be an early adopter, but it was only a bit over $100. The good thing is that HD DVDs will drop in price so I can buy up lots of existing titles for nothing.
- valkyries, on 03/02/2008, -0/+9yeah i just picked up the HDdvd drive for the xbox360(gona connect it to my pc) for 50$ at bestbuy. even came with a "free" movie
- ryan899, on 03/02/2008, -3/+11Maybe because this pops up on EVERY HD-DVD/Blu Ray thread?
- darlyn, on 03/02/2008, -3/+11What's with all the AOL news submissions lately?
0_0 - selfdisplaced, on 03/02/2008, -5/+13don't know why you are dugg down, but i want Transformers on Blu-ray, hell i was waiting until their contract was over to buy it on any format, not even DVD. so it coming to blu-ray, just adds another sale for them from me.
- HappyScrappy, on 03/02/2008, -0/+8That's certainly correct. They in fact canceled several releases that were already announced, presumably because those didn't make it into production yet.
- inactive, on 03/02/2008, -2/+9Agreed - Brilliant film.
- bigbadgoat, on 03/02/2008, -1/+8... made by sony?
why don't they just put a root kit in a firmware update, so PS3s can tell sony all the information they can already get! - krische, on 03/02/2008, -2/+8I'm glad blu-ray won, but aren't all these stories kinda like beating a dead horse?
- greenlight2001, on 03/02/2008, -0/+6Actually, I'm just gonna angry ***** your mom instead.
- selfdisplaced, on 03/02/2008, -7/+12yes, then they'll access to what, my dvd player?
- gypsi, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5i'm just glad there's a single format. does this mean all the people "cheering" for blu-ray can stop dancing now?
- dime, on 03/02/2008, -0/+5RIP 09-F9-11-02-9D-74-E3-5B-D8-41-56-C5-63-56-88-C0
- deadbaby, on 03/02/2008, -2/+6A better chance maybe but I still think they would have lost. Microsoft would have needed to delay the 360 significantly to include HD-DVD and raise the price of the console too.
- hexydes, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4In which case, how pathetic that the format folded, because clearly, there was a lot of demand from consumers.
- newdigger, on 03/02/2008, -0/+4Do an A/B test of a movie on a 100"+ screen with a a native 1080p (Sim2 HT5000 perhaps?) projector using the DVD, and the HDDVD/BD versions. THEN tell me those DVD's look fine... I agree thats its all about the movie, but when it looks this good, it gets you all that much more enveloped in it.
- GOVATENT, on 03/02/2008, -2/+6Do you have an HDTV with a blueray player or HD DVD Player? I own a 42 in Sony. (1080 i) w/e. I use a toshiba HDMI dvd upscale player. I think it looks great for watching dvds. I did think blueray and HD looked a bit clearer, but not something i would need to go out and spend money on. I think my standard upscaling hdmi dvd player does a great job with regular dvds. (it was my friends ps3 that we used at my house, and another friend HD DVD player) so i have seen all 3. The only thing i love about blue ray is the sound. My tv might suck, but i have a great sound system i spent a lot of money on. I think the uncompressed audio is the best thing i ever herd. No one seems to talk about this. Its all about the image for most people. That have not even seen all 3. I don't care if i watch a movie on a ps3, 360 or stand alone player, as long as it looks nice and sounds great , why fight over how you watch your movies.
- the_snitch, on 03/02/2008, -1/+5a little over-dramatic, but it had to be said.
- hexydes, on 03/02/2008, -3/+7The only thing that would have given HD-DVD a better chance would be if Toshiba bought every major movie studio into exclusivity, like Sony did.
Have no delusions of what transpired; the more consumer-friendly format was defeated by the anti-consumer format that simply bought its way to a "victory". - seanpackage, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3Get 'em while they're hot!
- BodomX, on 03/02/2008, -2/+5I know I will get dugg down, but that was damn good.
- RandomGuySteve, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3We have to make sure it's dead. If people don't know its dead, HD-DVDs will become popular again. And then we'll all have to buy HD-DVD players and all our old media again.
- SharkyTech, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3The fact that the format has failed is the only reason I bought it. I went out and grabbed a HD DVD attachment for the 360 yesterday as well as Transformers and the Bourne Collection for $80. Thats cheaper than had i gone out and bought only 3 blu-ray movies, which isn't bad for four movies and a player. People might think its a bit strange to buy into a dead format, but how can I lose?
- viserov, on 03/02/2008, -5/+8It'd be nice to own Deep Space Nine and some of the better Star Trek movies in HD.
- valkyries, on 03/02/2008, -9/+12oh how i can't wait to get all these movies for cheep.
- SharkyTech, on 03/02/2008, -0/+3Agreed, this is what I've always thought in response to those saying microsoft should have built it in. The price rise, and the lack of a one-year advantage in terms of market share and games would have made made the 360 more vulnerable to competition from the PS3, without guaranteeing that HDDVD would win the format war. In the end it could have resulted in both the 360 and HDDVD losing out.
- SharkyTech, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2It's about AU$24 in Australia, but they're going pretty quick, the fire sales seemed to have started about Thursdays and now the number of discs in many large stores is in the single figures. The mark-down from about AU$70 is brilliant, but for me Heroes isn't something I would watch twice. Don't get me wrong, the series is great and the special effects would be great in HD, but it'd be kind of like reading a Stephen King (actually perhaps Matthew Riley) novel for a second time, it's all about the twist. Now if it were the second series (which i haven't seen in full due to inconvenient time-slotting), that would be another matter...
- HappyScrappy, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Engadget now reports Universal's last HD-DVD "Atonement" comes March 18th.
- Ajajadude, on 03/02/2008, -1/+3I saw American Gangster in Best Buy where the display was touting the fact that it came in HD-DVD format. I had to laugh at that since it was pretty obvious that the display was designed prior to HD-DVDs defeat.
- nigdef, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2although i have no immediate plans to upgrade from a normal dvd i'm kinda sad to see hddvd go. but now that their is only one other alternative will more people start to upgrade without buying a games console. or will most people decide ***** it there is no real point anymore and why pay more for bluray movies when you get nothing really extra in return for the extra cash. plus will the price of the movies drop big time for bluray, stay the same or even go up as there is no competition for hi def movies on disc anymore.
- paulvq, on 03/02/2008, -2/+4Yeah...you can say that when PS3 has the same quality(and quantity) of games that the Wii and 360 have.
- Ajajadude, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2Considering the box sets for one season go for about $100 at most retailers I've seen them at, I really don't want to know how much those sets would cost in the HD format.
- selfdisplaced, on 03/02/2008, -1/+3well people still want it. i mean if you are going to complain about the same comments on each thread, maybe you should visit not digg? if you haven't noticed it's the norm around here.
- dawpa2000, on 03/02/2008, -1/+3I would say that, but this is more like carrying the dead horse into a coffin.
- buddamus, on 03/02/2008, -0/+2And in 5-10 years a new war will begin with the new flashy format
