- IClavdivs, on 06/17/2008, -1/+79Clearly, piracy is killing the movie industry.
- BinaryFragger, on 06/17/2008, -1/+39But that can't be, the MPAA says they lose $98516 billion every second due to piracy.
- MattB123, on 06/17/2008, -2/+36Surely it's because of the college students getting busted by the MPAA! ;)
- designerutah, on 06/17/2008, -2/+22And yet the movie industry is DYING because of piracy!
/sarcasm - ps2rules27, on 06/17/2008, -0/+17Make good movies, you make money OMG its a miracle...
- GregViers, on 06/17/2008, -1/+15Once again, studios tout their own success by posting revenues and not number of tickets sold. I'm not a Paramount investor... I don't need an earnings report. More interested in how many people are watching one movie or another.
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -1/+11I thought piracy was more prevalent outside of the USA?
- renagadex2, on 06/17/2008, -3/+10Indiana Jones was a ***** terrible movie
- WCL23, on 06/17/2008, -1/+8What the hell? Everyone knows that little Timmy and his friends watching TV shows and Movies online have single handedly brought the movie industry to it's knees. Buried as inaccurate.
- pseudo.hero, on 06/17/2008, -1/+7Not to sound like every other comment but I just have to add:
Oh man, that piracy really is hurting the film industry. - wedges, on 06/17/2008, -0/+5The Motion Picture Association of AMERICA doesn't have jurisdiction outside our borders.
- Myonosken, on 06/17/2008, -1/+5That's just utter utter *****. The fart joke movies and dumbed down 'AHA *****!' movies are hated far more outside of the US than inside.
- MattB123, on 06/17/2008, -0/+4It is. See how they are suffering?
- jezsik, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5Um, no. More likely the Republicans will attempt more draconian Digital Restriction Management laws to protect the poor downtrodden movie studios and their meager profits. Then they'll cut taxes for the wealthy and continue to pay for the war using the ol' American Excess credit card ("Kill now, pay later!").
- inactive, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4This comes from the MPAA human trafficking, OBVIOUSLY not from the movie industry, because as we all know, college students have already bankrupted that sector.
- luag, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3But we should have made OVER 9000 BILLIONS BY NOW!
- jezsik, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3I can see the movie execs weeping "If it wasn't for all those pirates, we could have made FOUR billion by now!" What a tragedy
- teamparadox, on 06/17/2008, -2/+5So half way through 2008 they have passed $1 billion in profit even in the face is horrible rampant piracy..wow impressive.
Next week there will be an article about how they lost $1 billion due to pirates and they will want harsh punishment. IMO piracy helps movies via free advertising and word of mouth..but what would I know I only own about 600 dvd's and go to theatres all the time and maybe view a pirated movie here and there. - Sk8SkaNJ, on 06/17/2008, -0/+3They're both pretty bad and rely on 'cool' CGI and a retarded script.
- aladrin, on 06/17/2008, -1/+4Oh gee, imagine that! They start offering movies internationally at the same time as the US, and they start making more money from them!
I have friends in Europe that pirate movies solely because they -can't- watch them when everyone else does if they don't. Once they've pirated it, there's little incentive to go pay at the movies 6 months or a year later, IF they even get the movie at all.
On the other hand, the recent movies that have been released at the same time, they've actually paid for them at the theatre.
Wonder why they couldn't understand this previously? - EricSchC1, on 06/17/2008, -1/+3Not all of us see taxing the obnoxiously rich as a bad thing, especially when the poor pay obnoxiously high taxes, by comparison. Does the poor little rich-boy advocate cry much?
- digismack, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2The mafia has jurisdiction wherever it says it has jurisdiction. Get with the picture!
- Raider007, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2woah woah woah
slow down with those good ideas... we don't appreciate that type of thinking round these parts... - EricSchC1, on 06/17/2008, -0/+2Comment that bears repeating: "Not all of us see taxing the obnoxiously rich as a bad thing, especially when the poor pay obnoxiously high taxes, by comparison. Does the poor little rich-boy advocate cry much?"
- jamesdew, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1indeed but iron man was great
- nephilimx, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1Do the math, 1billion dollars / 51 countrys. Not much compared to profit from USA alone.
- minorthreat, on 06/17/2008, -1/+2dude.. its June 17th, half of the year is already over.
- nendoke, on 06/17/2008, -3/+4and those greedy fagot still complaining about Piracy, Torrent, Blocking Usenet and shutting down TPB...
- EricSchC1, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I think they hate ignorant Americans more than America, as a whole.
- designerutah, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I've got an idea for the MPAA. Why not release one movie, something they think will do well, in theatres everywhere, while at the same time allowing for a low-res (320x240) version for free online, and higher resolutions (full or HD) for small fees (3.99 for HD?) and see how well it does. Just that one property, and give it a live test. See what happens over 2-3 years.
- nigdef, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1at last they have discovered that there is a market outside the usa. hello paramount welcome to the rest of the world....and guess what we all don't live in castles and listen to gramaphone records either
- tucsonwc, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1So you LIKE paying $5 a gallon for gas? And the only alternative to this limited resource which will exhaust itself is to drill faster and in more areas to end the supply quicker?
Instead of funding research to eliminate it's use in the long term and provide hybrid solutions in the short term?
Oh hey, can you sign me up for the $400 million retirement package the former CEO of Exxxon got? I'd like one of those please. - raskali, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1I think you got your facts wrong, it should be nine thousand thousand billions.
- tucsonwc, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1A CEO without the infrastructure of people around him/her is nothing.
How is that work worth 400 TIMES more than the other workers in the same company? It isn't. That is about unbridled greed. Do you actually think that the CEO makes millions of decisions daily? Have you actually worked with executive staff? I have.
I'm not even talking about the guy's annual pay, we're talking his RETIREMENT package of $400 million dollars. Explain how that is a reasonable calculation and how it provides shareholder value.
Exxon is riding the crest of out of control oil prices. There is no magic behind that, only speculation in the oil market. - daPhoenix, on 06/17/2008, -0/+1You're forgetting domestic productions that simply never get shown in USA - they also take a considerable share of profits.
- thelastwarrior, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1It's funny when the MPAA says:"(downloading) makes the industry suffer"
- TonyTheTerrible, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1who
cares - shauncorleone, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1Sorry, but you're not eligible, because you could likely not perform the duties and handle the responsibilities and daily pressure placed on the CEO of a multi-billion dollar organization. I love the belief of people that think CEOs sit around all day doing nothing, rather than the multitude of decisions that could lose money for millions of people and effect the market in drastic ways.
- stivnan, on 06/17/2008, -0/+0it should have been 2 billion :( now I can only have 15 gold airplanes instead of 30
- darkchild82, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1I feel guilty for contributing to that by spending money to watch 'Indiana Jones' (sigh)... but I don't feel guilty at all for 'Iron Man's success!
- shauncorleone, on 06/17/2008, -1/+1Don't worry, Obama will surely go after Big Cinema Distribution for these windfall profits!
- shauncorleone, on 06/18/2008, -1/+1The truly poor pay no taxes. The same truly poor also received rebate checks this year. I hope that those who are truly poor, and not just middle or lower-middle class and living beyond their means, are able to work their way up through whatever system they are in to become more wealthy. Unfortunately, hope doesn't do anything, it's only through their hard work, determination and taking advantage of opportunities that it can be accomplished.
Taxing someone who's "obnoxiously rich" just because they're rich is an act of jealousy and contempt for someone who has achieved when you have not. Oh, and you should know better than to think that taxing the rich is going to directly help the poor. You're naiive if you think the career politicians on Capitol Hill aren't going to filter out their fair share first.
And one last thing: FLAT TAX. - Spideristic, on 06/17/2008, -2/+1It seems Marvel have a problem offering Jon Favreau a better deal for Iron Man 2. I wonder if Paramount was financing, it would have been a done deal by now.
- MatthewDuke, on 06/17/2008, -5/+4The Democrats will probably work to impose a windfall profits tax...
- borez, on 06/17/2008, -4/+3I was gonna mention the piracy/profit thing, but I think it's already been said.
So why am I even writing this comment?? - AllNewRelease, on 06/19/2008, -1/+0Hi,

however
Transformers way cooler than Indiana Jones KOTCS - Dumbledorito, on 06/17/2008, -4/+2They don't hate America. They dislike Bush's policies.
And sadly, the movies that do best overseas are ones without a lot of complicated dialogue or with loads of action. That's fine for "Iron Man" but it causes our "comedies" to lean towards the fart joke and the pie-in-the-face gag instead of more "grown up" humor. - kdfrawg, on 06/16/2008, -7/+2Not a bad start to the year! Yikes!
