- mdlestat, on 11/03/2009, -3/+46I don't give a damn what you say-- I was scared ***** when I watched it back then.
It's easy to be cocky and dismissive now, but remember when it was released, before it was played-out and cliche, it was a very clever, original and creepy-as-hell movie to watch.
They won't catch lightning in a bottle again, though-- it was a great movie the first time around-- just let it stay there. - robwhite1979, on 11/03/2009, -1/+29Blair Witch got a bad rap because of the hype, but when it comes down to it it was a decent independent horror movie. If instead of it being talked about for months on end before release it had been whispered about at Sundance or the Toronto Film Festival people would have been a lot more accepting of what they got... I think it would be nice if the original crew did a sequel, there was a lot of stuff in the first one that could be explored further.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -3/+19I don't think io9 knows the meaning of hthe word "mockumentary" . It does NOT refer to any fake documentary. It refers to a fake documentary done as a COMEDY.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -2/+17This comment paid for by the producers of Paranormal Activity.
- TheRedeemer, on 11/03/2009, -1/+15I hope you meant the opposite. If not, you're a dumbass.
- dvsbastard, on 11/03/2009, -1/+13The original Blair Witch had the huge advantage of being sucessfully marketed as a "true story" - and many people watched it believing it was real... A sequel to this kind of movie would never ever share the same success...
- Jaysunli, on 11/03/2009, -0/+11I went camping directly after seeing this film in the theatres. Needless to say at age 13, sleeping in the woods, I was terrified.
The original film was good but I don't understand how another sequel could ever work. - ipushmycar, on 11/03/2009, -2/+13Here comes a tidal wave of cheap, *****, unoriginal independent horror films. Each one will claim critics call it the scariest horror movie of the decade. All of them will suck, and all of them will say they lost profits due to piracy.
- rossisdead, on 11/03/2009, -0/+11Blair Witch 2 is alright if you watch it and pretend it's a really weird episode of Burn Notice.
- chorizo1, on 11/03/2009, -2/+10never saw blar witch...
- DaviDTC, on 11/03/2009, -0/+8Paranormal activity wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Went with 2 other friends and they thought the same thing. We were all looking forward to this being a scary movie and it fell short by a lot. One point I started to laugh during a scene that was suppose to be suspenseful.
- Krekko, on 11/03/2009, -6/+13They want to one up Paranormal.
Good luck with that. - inactive, on 11/03/2009, -0/+6you should look into it. Your co-workers got paid already.
You know...the group of Diggers who have been acting as if everyone is tlaking about Paranormal Activity and has been for months, when in fact, most people don't even know wht it is. - heavyj1970, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5it's the redneck version, that there blar witch pro-jeck
- worldgate989, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5I liked the matrix sequels, but, your opinion is valid to some i suppose.
- Krekko, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4 I was unimpressed out of the theater with the movie, and still, was not scared however, I sat back thought about it, 10 grand to make, 1 week to shot and edit, released on demand of people. And, for me at least it had me wondering, looking at the walls, the floors, chasing shadows, looking for any betrayal of what was there, and the just plain simplicity of the project is what is the truly amazing part.
It was simple. There was no need to be dominated by Hollywood effects, or to have corpses explode or people have body parts ripped off, no. It was a very subtle movie. And in that, is where the beauty lies. - rootsm3, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3Paranormal can't ever be Blair Witch. Just won't happen. But leave it alone and don't make the secret threequel.
- TrevorBelmont, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3I saw Freaky Links. These guys are essentially the lottery winners of Hollywood. If you have a million monkeys and a million typewriters...
- philsaysstfu, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3* See: Last 20 years*
- Barackalypse, on 11/03/2009, -1/+4Hopefully with the money they made from the first one they can afford tripods and steadycams this time around, or else I'm going to have to use some digital image stabilization on their film to prevent getting dizzy again.
- Kidddrunkadelic, on 11/03/2009, -0/+3***** Paraguay!
- salinungatha, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2I'd really like the creators to make a prequel (Witch backstory) then a sequel. Each film having a different style (e.g. prequel Black and White, Sequel big budget FX) to make a nice little trilogy.
- jshhmr, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2The Bare Wench Project was much better. At least there was hot lesbian action.
- Krekko, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3Blair Witch had a fairly normal release size.
Paranormal, has not. - tgc1, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2In short. They want to reap the MASSIVE profits that Blair Witch did, on a shoe string budget. Classic profit motive.
- LilJimmyNordin, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3Newchap is wrong, and so is anyone that dugg him up.
The "mock" in mockumentary refers to a mockumentary's imitation of the documentary format in a fictional context, not to any comedy that may be present. Much as "mock chicken" is just other food processed to simulate chicken, a "mockumentary" is just a fictional work presented as a true record of events.
Dictionaries. Use them. - MOJIRA, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3You're missing the two most important elements of anything successful: ???? and PROFIT!
- MOJIRA, on 11/03/2009, -1/+3Paranormal Activity sucked. Boring, not scary, unoriginal, and a lame ass ending. Blair Witch, as far as I know, was the first of its kind, actually quite frightening at times, and genuinely intriguing.
- Kanten, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I'd rather prequels go away completely.
- ousthouse, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Sounds like the original directors finally pissed away the money they got when they signed away the rights for Blair Witch 2.
- MOJIRA, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Maybe they have something original. It's not like the haven't had the time to plan it.
- rootsm3, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I saw Blar Which. Romantic comedy about binge eating and golf. Not my style.
- rrwest, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I agree.
BW2 was not a terrible movie if you were expecting something different from the first one, as I was.
The characters may not have been the best-drawn, but how they interacted and reacted to the events of the film was interesting, if not fightening. - ilikedemoon, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2I think it was just some idiot kid prank.
- sonofalink, on 11/03/2009, -3/+4Blair Witch wasn't a comedy?
- PlatnumPlatypus, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2I wish more companies would "pretend the sequal never happened" and just rewrote the story. I think Hulk went that route where they didn't directly acknowledge the predecessor.
Take the Matrix, for example. Just pretend Trinity never died, Morpheous didn't turn out to be Malcom X meets Ving Rhames, and that Agent Smith didn't need to Dragon Ball Z fight Neo to conclude the story. Also, disregard the tagline: "Hey, here's a bunch of characters that advance the story in no significant or memorable way, regardless of how hot Monica Bellucci is."
Just pretend the series ended after the first one. - banderwocky, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Sounds like a good idea. Pretend Book of Shadows never happened...
- allisonaxe, on 11/03/2009, -1/+2Didn't they all die, anyway? and what made blair witch so scary was, you have 3 normal, boring idiots wandering into the forest, getting lost, and dying off-camera. if you bring back the same people (now 10 years older, and very alive), how exactly will that work?
- MelissaOfTroy, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I've met Eduardo Sanchez and gave him my headshot and resume. Maybe he'll call me to be in the movie lol.
- rosserfan, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Josh?! Josh!!!!!!!
- whytey, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1I keep getting redirected to a 'Hey You Sucka' banner
- rrwest, on 11/03/2009, -0/+0Ergo, the reason why Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows never did well.
- lordaddiv, on 11/03/2009, -1/+1How to make a better sequel than Book of Shadows:
Step 1: Drop a camera in a mud puddle
Step 2: Swish it around for a few minutes
Step 3: Print immediately (no editing required)
Step 4: Distribute - rrwest, on 11/03/2009, -0/+0All it takes is for one reviewer to like the film for distributors to call the film "great".
- JudoChinX, on 11/03/2009, -0/+0I'm not so sure about this. Why bring back the original cast? The first movie is complete. We don't need to know any more about what happened to those people. If we see another sequel, I think it needs to be centred around new characters in order to be successful. No need to tinker with a story that has proven successful as is.
- rrwest, on 11/03/2009, -0/+0The story of Rustin Parr would be an excellent way to end off the BW franchise.
It has all the elements we need, a creepy back legend, missing children, a serial killer using the legend for his own sick gain and backwoods locations. - rrwest, on 11/03/2009, -0/+0I hope that they make a prequel just as they originally intended.
- inactive, on 11/03/2009, -4/+3Paranormal Activity's expected final Box Office is projected to be around $100 million, compared to Blair Witch's $140 million.
Yeah...good luck with THAT!.
You did not earn your pay with that comment. - phildutra, on 11/03/2009, -6/+4I enjoyed both but Paranormal Activity scared the hell out of me at several points in the movie. I literally got chills during some scenes. That has never happened to me watching a movie!
- shanidachine, on 11/03/2009, -4/+1Yeah but decent movie or not, it won't be as good as the first and its just about the recent box office success of Paranormal Activity, and the directors just have $$$ on their minds.
