- schlagzeuger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3donalson - www.cafedvd.com service is great, but they are a small company. I live in CA so it's fine for me, but I'm not sure about their distribution. One thing that's cool, though, is that you log in and tell them when you have shipped the DVDs back to them, and then they immediatly ship the next one (they TRUST their customers! hooray). I've been with them for 2 months and so far they kick Netflix's ass all over the place.
- teece, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NefFlix was very good -- for the first month or two. We got everything we wanted, and it shipped in a day.
Now, anything recent is on "Long Wait." And everything is taking two to three days to get here. I really wanted to like NetFlix, but it appears they are very dishonest. If you actually use their service the way they claim you can, they throttle you back to a level they can afford, and give new movies away to people that don't fill their queue.
*sigh* Screw that. I guess I have to start looking for something else. (Note: there are 8 movies currently in my 80 movie queue on very long wait. All of them have been there for weeks). - thomashawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't it only chumps wait in line?
- xN8x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Are you tired of watching reruns of Knight Rider just because you rent too many DVDs each month?"
I happen to like Knight Rider. - mmpkidz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep your tricks to get the new releases. There's like a bazillion older movies I'd rather watch (or watch) again) than most of the junk coming out these days.
- drysz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have never had a problem getting the movie I want, when I want it. Even new releases. Strange!
- ArchibaldTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have over 400 movies in my queue (yes I am a loser), so this "hack" is worthless. Why is the word "hack" applied to so many things these days...
- Paradelle, on 01/04/2009, -0/+1this is outdated info - and having nothing in your queue defeats one of the advantages to using a service like Netflix. I max'ed out my my queue at 400 (I think that was it) but I was still getting my top movies regularly. Plus the new distribution system should improve things.
- jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We have lost respect for the word "HACK"... This will be more in the terrain of common sense.
- dFLAWLESS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have already been doing this. Now I am screwed because everyone is Digg nation is gonna be doing this.
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Long Wait and Very Long Wait = No Longer Netflix Customer
Bye Netflix. By the time you get it, I can watch it on HD SHO or HBO - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for blurting it out. Some of us were actively using that trick to get new releases.
- Esprit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use NetFlix to get the not-so-mainstream titles that I want, that may not be at my local video rental store.
For new releases, I'll get them at a video rental place. If I don't get it in the first week, I'll get it by the second week after its release.
Everyone thinks they'll use NetFlix to get the newest release, while everyone thinks the same, so you just wait that much longer for that "new" release, that isn't quite so new by the time you get it. - cds879, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought to do this about a month ago, but it did not work for me... After 3 days of them not sending out a movie, I gave up. I used FlixQueue to export the movies I took out of my queue and put them back in.
- theImposs1ble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that stupid. i have 300 movies in my queue and get 5 at a time.
no hack, no digg - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Or you can use BT and get them in an hour or two."
Sure, if you want to watch a ***** 1.2gig rip of a movie in DiVX format that most people can't play on their home theater systems. - breid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone tried Blockbuster's service?
It appears for near the same price, you get queued movies, plus 2 free in-store rentals. It would seem like you could use the queue for your regular movie habit, then use the coupons every month to snag the new release you can't wait for.
I was considering it - has anyone else tried them? - chatwithaninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for those of you that have a lot of movies in your queue, just create a second queue for "another" user. use the second queue for only "long wait" movies, and your current queue will keep all of your older movies. Set the secondary queue to send one movie at a time, and you will always have a new release either there, on the way, or on the way back, all without having to empty your primary queue.
- matlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, the term "hack" is really losing any meaning these days. I use this method all the time with GameFly. It just seems to be common sense.
- DavisFreeberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought that this was an interesting trick, but I will be more interested in seeing what happens if a lot of people start using the hack. At what point does Netflix actually refuse to send DVDs? They could write code into the software that would prevent you from having less then 10 films in your queue or they could just stop shipping dvds. Of course they could just ignore it and hope that people forgot about it.
- donolsen1155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for the pointer schlagzeuger, I'm going to switch. Have they been a good service?
I like the a-la-carte idea since there are months I'll go without renting and feel like I wasted $20 on Netflix. $2.49 per movie is a lot better than the local places. - schlagzeuger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, i finally gave up and cancelled due to their movie thottling. www.cafedvd.com - no throttling (although their web design sucks balls)
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe this'll at least put some heat on Netflix to get their inventory up to speed. The delays where I am (NYC) are horrendous.
- subject117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, what a "HACK"
- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if this works for Gamefly? Maybe I can finally get ESPN NFL 2K5!
- ferrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a steady 100 or so movies in queue at NF at any given time. Except for a month of slowness around the holiday season, I have been reasonably satisfied with their turnaround time for all titles, new and old. My queue is not very heavy with new releases however, so maybe that makes a difference.
At least for me, I find I get "new releases" sooner by putting them into my queue way before they are actually released on DVD. *sssshhhh* don't tell anyone else about this "hack"!
...
Doh! =) - thotpoizn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll be happy when we can just subscribe to the service, download the movies or TV shows we want to watch, and then delete them after the family is done watching them a few times.
*sigh* Could you pass the crack pipe, please? - frozendice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I also had the same problem with netflix. It was great for the first month and a half or two, but now anime I've been ordering has taken multiple days to ship. It's obscure and I'm pretty sure there's very few viewers requesting it. I thought there was something up with this, but I didn't suspect them of throling it. It's only an ok service because of the long turn arround. checking out cafedvd.
- SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont know what you people are doing wrong, but I have had Netflix for 8 months now and never got a "Short Wait". But thanks for the tip
- trancelgic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm, I think I'm going to try and hack my way into some chicks' pants. Hack1ng r0X
- northLite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Of course, because torrenting a DVD isn't cheating anyone. It's totally a victimless crime."
Wow I really couldnt have said it better myself, thats the perfect wording for it. Piracy is a _victimless crime_
If its an issue of morality, it would be better just to download the movie so someone else could have a copy of the movie off NetFlix a few days sooner. Its not like you were buying it anyway. And thats the only way piracy would have any _real_ effect. When you pirate instead of buying something. - quigles3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't have many movies in my queue, so I'm gonna try this. However, now that I only have 6 movies in my queue, a notice appeared saying this:
"ATTENTION! For the best possible service, add additional available titles to your Rental Queue. Learn More."
I clicked it, and this appeared:
"To get the most out of your membership, be sure to always have a wide selection of available titles in your Rental Queue. Having a full Queue means we can always send you movies, so you'll always have DVDs at home to watch!
Some guidelines we recommend for our customers:
1. Always have at least twice as many movies in your Queue as your program size.
2. Always have at least as many "Available Now" titles in your Queue as your program size. This allows you to return all the movies you have at home and receive a complete set to replace them.
Remember, if a title in the top spot is out of stock, we'll send your next available in-stock title. This way, you'll always have great movies on hand!"
I think that's basically letting me know that they aren't going to send anything unless that have it listed as "available now". If this ends up screwing me over, I'm going to be sort of annoyed. :/ - rnelsonee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Meh. Removing my 200 movies from NF is not something I want to do. Not that I'm all that smart -- after burning 300+ movies in 9 months, I got burned out, and since have been paying $35/mo since September, and I still have those 5 same discs right next to my keyboard right now.
Anywho, if you want movies to come to you first, (aside from being a new subscriber, which everyone knows about), just add the movie you want to your list before it's out -- do the "save" thing, and then add it ASAP, as soon as Netflix lets you. Keep it at #1 on your list, along with the other 10+ movies you want, and you'll get it soon enough. - handeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what about us http://intelliflix.com users
- adizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is dumb. The guy only did it twice. Who's to say it actually works?
- Eccles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Have you checked out Peerflix.com?
It's Netflix-like, except the peerflix folks just provide the connections. You send DVDs you no longer want to other customers as they specify (and get "peerbux" for doing so), and then other customers send you DVDs which costs you peerbux. You pay the stamp for any DVDs you send plus a (real) buck to peerflix for each DVD you receive. (You just send the DVD inside a couple of folded pieces of printed paper, and discard or repurpose the case,) Selection is dependent on how many people sign up for the service, so the more people who try it, the better. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lucky Americans. In the UK (where service is known to be awful) they all just say that you have to have at least 20 items in your queue. If you only leave one in the queue...they just don't send it...if you complain, they refer you to the 20 items in the queue rule....oh well...
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is it just me, or does Netflix sounds like it sucks?
- watuzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a useless, useless hack. I have about 150 movies in my queue and no way will I ***** remove them all just to get a single movie. And yeah, Netflix sucks. I never thought I would say that but they do. They send me the wrong movie in my queue and I end up waiting a long time for the new releases. But consider the alternative, which is blockbuster, so I stay with them... for now.
- Sculptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have had Netflix for a few years. And overall I have been very satisfied with the service. Since last holiday season the service has slowed some and that motivated me to look around. Still in the end they beat the rest by a long shot. Still having two services on minimum subscription might work out if you want to deal with a seperate queue for each service; maybe action & comedies for one and everything else via another service. For this artist these type of services are wonderful. With this and Rhapsody www.listen.com at $10 a month I have a commercial free home. While at a friends house I can hardly believe people listen to all that commercial garbage. Anyhow for your comparison shopping I have a very good link for you, although I decided to just increase my Netflix to 5 at a time from 3, something I do most years while when staying home (sculpting) more.
Here is a DVD & or Game Rental service comparison site.
http://www.mydvddelivery.com/ - LethalGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aside from 40 year old virgin (which I don't even wanna watch but a lady friend does) I've had all my "long wait" discs kick over eventually. I have a good 100 Star trek and MST3K movies to chomp through. I don't need to see anything that bad.
- AdverseE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, what about (insert fly-by-night DVD rental service that will probably be out of business in a year here)? I always get new releases right away!
- louiebeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GreenCine is so much better than Netflix!
- don2779, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No hack here.
I use blockbuster online. It might suck but, I do not get long waits for new releases. The last time I got a "long wait" message was when I rented "Hawk the Slayer" (please make fun of me now). By the way that was 4 days. - jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't believe I never though of that. Oh well. I cancelled them anyway.
- thomashawk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shhhhhhh.... we're hunting wabbits.....
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its called BT. And my dvd player does play divx, xvid, Mp4 wvm and h.264 on my home theater system. so there.
- flybot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You woudnt give a (real world) DVD rental store a list of movies you want to watch, so they can give you the c$@p from the bottom of you list, so why give an online DVD rental stores a list.
This is not a hack, its common sense. - ronjohnson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought everyone figured this one out last year. It is not a hack, but an obvious course of action.
