Since it's a sf series you could also argue that the language and it's pronunciation probably changed a bit in all those years. The English Language today also doesn't sound like the English spoken a couple of centuries years ago. So why should it be perfect? - Elminster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just got the DVDs and I am hooked. I have had to much spoiled of a good story in the past by too much marketing and this is one show ive actually been savouring the feeling of "looking forward to it". So thanks for the digg i know to avoid the site incase something ends up even remotely spoiling it. heck I did not even read the penny arcade strip about the previews....

The only thing I think it's got going for it is the awesome visuals. Everything else has already been done as far as I can tell.

They are a 100 years or more in the future and have technology capable of terraforming worlds with ease. Why would whole societies choose to model themselves after a period of history that is not practical (bonnets? aprons? only cowboy hats?) and ignore every other decade and technological advance since then?
Have the simple advances like construction techniques and clothing design since the 1900s been lost? Why style weapons after the 1800s when they have just had a massive war and more modern firearms would be easier to find on the black market? Why do the bad guys in their massive spacecraft with artificial gravity only have 20th century Hechler and Koch weapons. They managed to isolate and control the graviton but haven't figured out how to make better weapons? Why have cattle - which use resources more than they provide - when they should have access to plenty of high-tech food substitutes, hydroponics and new forms of power and energy creation. How else can they power those huge ships with ease?
The colonies got to those world's somehow and if the plan was to terraform them they should have had the supplies, equipment and futuristic knowledge necessary to do so.

i'm re-watching the dvds now to get ready. the podcast tweaq mentioned is a good source of info: in an interview with adam baldwin (jane), he said the making of the movie was a lot less rushed than the tv episodes were, which he feels will lead to better quality. shiny... - Gorbash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no faster than light travel in Firefly. At least not on any of the ships we've seen. There are really big engines though. Like the big glowy end on the back of Serenity. It does make them go faster, but not faster than light. And they didn't take over a bunch of worlds, they terraformed a bunch of planets and moons to Earth like qualities. This is mentioned in "The Trainjob" when the local police captain explains why every one has the sickness they do, it was a result of the terraforming reacting with the ore in the planet itself.

- Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Based on Star Trek?" You weren't watching very closely. I've heard it compared to Star Wars (in that Mal is very close to Han Solo), but never Star Trek. Hell, there aren't even aliens in Firefly. Or faster-than-light travel, transporters, a utopian society, etc. They haven't even got weapons on the ship, and there are rarely any laser beams or anything. Watch it again, and pay attention this time - you'll see what's special.
