- kent1146, on 02/01/2008, -2/+58As much as I would like to have seen Peter Jackson direct the Hobbit, after doing such phenomenal work with the Lord of the Rings films, I'd have to say that Del Toro is an excellent 2nd choice. He did AMAZING work with Pan's Labyrinth.
I'm a happy Tolkien geek. - JJ2K1, on 02/01/2008, -9/+47Did anyone else first think of Benicio Del Toro when first reading the title?
- Tearlock, on 02/01/2008, -0/+16I actually kind of like the idea that PJ is producing and letting a guy like Guillermo direct. They have enough stylistic similiarities to be continuous but enough differences to allow The Hobbit to have a different mood than LotR
- trickyt, on 02/01/2008, -0/+15Smaug, the Spanish Horror-Dragon!
- razorsedge555, on 02/01/2008, -1/+13Isn't " taking charge of the Hobbit " a euphemism for something like masturbating? If it's not it should be.
- fluxion, on 02/01/2008, -1/+12i thought Benicio Del Toro was gonna play Bilbo. that would've been....interesting
- ChzPlz, on 02/01/2008, -1/+12for ***** sakes, how many times do people have to be told that getting to the front page isn't based on the digg count alone? There's other factors involved.
If you don't like the way digg works, go use another social news site, or launch your own. - drlha, on 02/01/2008, -0/+9The Orphanage was not directed by Del Toro though.
- VortexSpin, on 02/01/2008, -0/+7I'm not as worried about the director as I am about that 'in between' movie that will be set after the Hobbit and before LOTR. That has potential for massive fail. The other thing is that I hope a change of directors doesn't mean too much of a change in visual style. I'd like my hobbits, elves, and orcs to look similar to the LOTR interpretations.
- aaronwolfe, on 02/01/2008, -0/+7Jackson is executive director at least....I'd hate to see a Hobbit movie that looks and feels nothing like the LOTR movies.
All in all, I'm very happy to see this movie moving forward! - chrismgtis, on 02/01/2008, -7/+13"Today is a big day because we are announcing what everyone wanted to hear, which is that he will be directing The Hobbit."
Oh really now? I will bet you every dime I make for the rest of my life that plenty more people wanted Jackson directing The Hobbit. The rest don't even matter. - pintomp3, on 02/01/2008, -1/+7sweet, i can't wait to see what he does with it. pan's labyrinth was really well done.
- fluxion, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5a vaguely recall hearing about some series that was gonna cover The Silmarillion.
i dont see them going so far as to make up filler movies though....dont think the Tolkien estate would be cool with that. - exscind, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5Peter Jackson/Guillermo del Toro as a producer/director team? I don't think I'll hear more exciting news THIS YEAR.
- mattsantiago1, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5PJ is executive producer
- higgy345, on 02/01/2008, -0/+5Ya I thought the same lol
The actor Benico Del Toro http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001125/
The director Guillermo Del Toro http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0868219/ - tattertech, on 02/01/2008, -1/+5No?
- NSMike, on 02/01/2008, -1/+5I don't think I'll get better news today.
- stomachache, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Del Toro means "of the bull", Rodriguez is pronounced as it is written, the same with Flores, although not with the American "r".
- jeuhrn, on 02/01/2008, -3/+7People don't know what they want, which is proven on a day-to-day basis all over the world.
This will rule, and will probably make the movies more available to those who can't take any more of that bland Peter Jackson-flavor.
I only read The Hobbit as a kid (my sister stole my LOTR book and went to another continent), and I really liked Pan's Labyrinth so this is indeed exactly what I wanted to hear. - inactive, on 02/01/2008, -0/+4Well I really wanted Peter Jackson, but he is still involved in the movie as an executive producer so not everything is lost.
Not that Guillermo del Toro is a bad choice, the movies I saw that the directed were Pan´s Labyrinth which was a great movie, Hellboy and Blade II which were ok. All of them did have great visuals. - LogicBomB, on 02/01/2008, -2/+6Oh wow, you live in one of those places without bookstores or libraries also? Wow, I thought I was the only one!
- roosterjm2k2, on 02/01/2008, -4/+8"He did AMAZING work with Pan's Labyrinth."
you should watch El Orfanato (The Orphanage) .... holy ***** that was a great movie... they even found a young spanish fred savage.... - fluxion, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3that's awesome dude!
- frostbyt, on 02/01/2008, -2/+5Ok. Try and iron a shirt, wash the dishes, and vacuum the rug all at the same time.
I would hardly call "taste/odor" a task. - Nick519, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3britney forced into psychiatric evaluation? that's a close 2nd.
- badenglishihave, on 02/01/2008, -1/+4This is truly exciting for Tolkien fans. I always loved the dark undertones of The Hobbit and I believe Del Toro is just the man to bring this magnificent novel to the big screen.
- rodrigo74, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3*****, Guillermo del Toro even looks a lot like Peter Jackson used to when he directed LOTR.
- Pixelante, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3You have no idea of what a proper nerd-beating is. Ripping the pages off the book, wiping your ass with it and then forcing him to eat them one at a time would have been proper conduct but you exhibited inferior bully skills. You FAIL.
- NSMike, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Watch The Devil's Backbone as well. I'm not sure it will change your impression of Del Toro overall, but it's a good movie.
- PabloIV, on 02/01/2008, -0/+3Technically it's "Of the Bull" an it is nowhere as common as Rodriguez as well as much less common than its etymological predecessor Toro. I'm not saying that it's a rare name, but you'll mostly likely not see two Del Toros in the same classroom growing up in a spanish speaking country.
- frostbyt, on 02/01/2008, -3/+5There is no such thing as a person "mutli-tasking." It's a borrowed term that business people like to use cause it sounds cool. Besides even if you could multi-task everything you were working on would end up wrong, crappy, or broken.
- noumuon, on 02/01/2008, -2/+4people multi-task all the time. i'm constantly decoding visual, audio, and taste/odor data at the same time, not to mention the entire slew of other tasks my brain is handling.
- GUTTS, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2As far as visual style goes, anyone here see Pan's Labrynth or Hell Boy? Nuff said.
- fluxion, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2havent seen The Orphanage, though i plan to. But Pan's Labyrinth had an awesome fantasy feel about it, maybe not quite as epic as with Peter Jackson, but hauntingly beautiful....which may work out really nice for a more "personal" story like The Hobbit. curious how the more epic scenes will turn out though...this is gonna be interesting
- unkle, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2you cant take heavenly creatures from him though. heck of a movie
- ours, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3Oh cool! I'm not a big Tolkien fan but I love just about everything Del Toro has made so far (that I've seen).
I bet he's going to make this one another winner and please LOTR fans. - GUTTS, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2I actually think Del Toro's directing skills are better then Peter Jacksons. Imo the only LOTR movie worth mentioning is the first. The other two were ***** in comparison. Not complete pile of ***** but close. Also, not to sound ungrateful or anything. I hope he goes in a total different direction with these two movies. I believe that these movies will totally eclipse LOTR in style as well as story(moviewise not bookwise). The last two LOTR movies were just two comercial for me. Not to mention the ending being one big sausage fest between two of the central characters.
- VeganG, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2The Hobbit, too much material for one movie? It's a short children's bedtime story, not like LOTR at all. Even the cartoon, at 90 minutes or however long it was, was a good adaptation and the only thing they had to cut out was Beorn.
- SLockhart, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2They did patch things upPeter Jackson is the producer.
- inactive, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Well apparently you don´t know about the Battle of five armies from that book, or do you think that its all about one little gay hobbit prancing around middle earth catching butterflies ?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Five_Armies - Nanobe, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Peter Jackson isn't directing because he's busy with other projects. But he is producing it.
- Nick519, on 02/01/2008, -1/+3those were rumor -- this was actual confirmation.
- GRTWHT, on 02/01/2008, -0/+2Don't worry, they'll find a way (even if it's awful) because then they get double the box office take, double the pay-per-views, double the DVD (and all the other formats) sales, etc.
If they could figure out a way to make it into 10 movies, they would. - tattertech, on 02/01/2008, -2/+3And most of those people don't realize what an amazing film maker Del Toro is. So ***** 'em.
- BingoPower, on 02/01/2008, -1/+2El Hobbito?
- SolidSnake24, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1His directing style reminds me of Sergio Leone!!
- NSMike, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1That's yesterday's news, though.
- zeiben, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Okay, is it official now? because if I have to read one more official digg article that ends up telling me he's only on a "short list", I'm going to stab out my stigmata with a mythical dagger so that my eyeballs won't sit in them any more...
- Jonmad17, on 02/01/2008, -0/+1Peter Jackson got skinny before he made King Kong.Look at recent photos of him.
