- ScottMcIntyre, on 09/15/2008, -1/+42This is a great find- the black & white classic movie. Max Shreck defined the role of the vampire in movies. The scene with his shadow on the wall as he's climbing the stairs is iconic. I'm going to bookmark and watch this later. Brilliant!
- chkdg8, on 09/16/2008, -5/+34Wow, I never knew that Rudy Giuliani got his start in silent films.
- chrissku, on 09/15/2008, -4/+23Brilliant film. Imagine what that film director could do with today's technology at his disposal.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0013442/ - Tyrghast, on 09/16/2008, -3/+22John McCain directed it. It was meant to be autobiographical, but no one took it seriously.
- MommaLu, on 09/15/2008, -1/+17Great find! That is the flick that all other vampire movies have been based on. I bet it scared the crap out of folks in it's day. It's still one of the most hideous looking vamps I've seen to this day.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+8Interestingly enough, the original Nosferatu was almost never seen again because of the Stoker estate's copyright infringement claim. They had all known copies of the film destroyed, however, they didn't look in Australia, which is the last stop for most films making the theater circuit. It costs too much to send them back, so most companies just left the prints there and forgot about them. That's where the Nosferatu we know today comes from. Someone rediscovered it in Australia.
(edit) Ha! I didn't even get to read the blurb on the site before I wrote that. Oops.
It's one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen. - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -2/+10He'd probably do less, because of the crappy taste, quality, and complexity in movies these days, and the companies pushing for them because the ignorant, stupid masses flock to those easy mind-bleeder hunks of low level simplistic modern trash.
- solld3th, on 09/15/2008, -3/+11I love that word.
- DeathJux, on 09/16/2008, -0/+7Buried for censoring yourself and for being an idiot.
- ghostoftomjoad, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7is that... and 84 minute movie on digg??
- Vicious172, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Nosferatu > Wesley Snipes
- MikeFallopian, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6It's an unauthorized film version of Dracula. Bram Stoker's family never gave away the rights to the story.
- LorDSyNDracuL, on 09/16/2008, -2/+8watch it and find out for yourself, it's only 84 minutes long.
- Tyrghast, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7Because without it, movies would not be what they are today? Nosferatu kick started the monster movie genre, which in turn evolved in to action flicks.
- daRoach, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6And Christopher Walken defined his role as Max Shreck brilliantly in Batman Returns as well.
- MasterGrief, on 09/16/2008, -0/+6Even though other people are burying you, I'm not. It's a good word!
- Redsblog, on 09/16/2008, -1/+7Check out Shadow of the Vampire as well, awesome film with John Malkovich about the (fictional) making of Nosferatu
- MikeFallopian, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5Werner Herzog did a great (and very faithful) remake of "Nosferatu" in 1979. Black and white, with Klaus Kinski as Dracula. It's worth a look if you enjoy the original.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079641/ - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5It scares the crap out of me still!!
I watched it on our campus movie theater and everybody was freaked out.
Then the main character opens the door to his bedroom, only to see Nosferatu staring at him from across the room, you squirm in your seat. From then on, whenever trying to quietly open a door, I always think that Nosferatu might be on the other side, staring at me. - MrFisty, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5Downloaded fast for me, and I'm in Australia where the internet is operated by a handcrank.
- cbh01, on 09/16/2008, -4/+9So relevant, it even got mentioned in a Spongbob episode. Really.
- ageedoy, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5According to a HBO documentary, the estate of Bram Stoke sued to get all copies of Nosferatu destroyed since it was too similar to Dracula. Nice find.
- kirbs2001, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5this movie scared the ***** out of me when i was a kid
i still remember the name Nosferatu - inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5Because its one of the best movies ever made and its still scary, even after 80-something years.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+5What? Did you want it dubbed?
- SRSco, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Oh. Now that I read Wikipedia I see that. I've seen this movie twice and never knew that. Thanks.
- iignotus, on 09/16/2008, -1/+5Yeah sometimes if I leave my subway sandwich on the counter overnight it's hard as a rock and basically inedible in the morning.
- lebatte, on 09/16/2008, -2/+6Technology is not linked in any necessary way to the technical improvement of cinema.
- houndeyex, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Seriously, reading must have been a challenge back then. A full minute for one sentence? Come on now.
- rivalthecreator, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Still creepy as hell. Especially when he opens his door and sees him just standing out there.
- Slackdragon, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4I'm imagining he'd be forced to do all the retarded, overplayed modern cliches. The "I'm looking in the mirror and suddenly there's someone behind me in the mirror but when I turn around there's no-one there take"! Oooooh! Scary! Then, he'd be made by the studio heads to put in an echoy/whispery "cha-cha-cha chi-chi-chi" whenever Baron Orlok is around.
Not to mention there'd be tons of blood, lots of hot girls screaming. No real suspense or creepiness or uniqueness, just pre-formed cookie-cutter template/playbook predictable scenes we've all seen a bazzillion times.
Which is why I love these old films for their unique style and power. There's a certain class and elegance that modern film makers have forgotten, or choose to overlook. - BoneStamp, on 09/16/2008, -0/+4Because this movie has influenced so many movies that are made today. Watch this movie and think about some of the dark and stylized films you've seen.
- billyogawa, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3It's not black and white, but I agree that it's great.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3And Oscar Nominated Willem Dafoe as Max Schreck.
- borez, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3All
http://www.publicdomainflicks.com/ - eebeelive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+4this is the one and only vampire movie...
- engwar, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3Which is why the vampire isn't named "Dracula".
The German remake from the 80's is great too.
And the more recent retelling "The Shadow of the Vampire" is durned good too. - ageedoy, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3according to IMDB:
"All known prints and negatives were destroyed under the terms of settlement of a lawsuit by Bram Stoker's widow. However, the film would subsequently surface in other countries." - ide1337myself, on 09/16/2008, -0/+3If you guys like this movie, check out Werner Herzog's remake from 1979. It stars possibly the creepiest looking man (and one of the best actors) ever, Klaus Kinski.
- Twag86, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2This and Metropolis are possibly the best silent movies of all time.
- ansatsu29, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Classic silent film. Ah, the air of nostalgia...
- tavisjohn, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2Anyone have a torrent? The downloads off the site are REALLY slow.
It would be legal afterall... - TheGovernor, on 09/16/2008, -5/+7Where's the token black guy?
- MasterGrief, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2I'm just as shocked as you are.
- jbmcb, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2The Alloy Orchestra does a great soundtrack for Nosferatu, unfortunately I don't think it's for sale.
- jkendal4, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2it kind of is news if you think that this is the first vampire film, and true blood just premiered last week on HBO
- NexTRaker, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2DUGGGGG
- archivist, on 09/16/2008, -0/+2it's from germany, the land of sans serifs.
- inactive, on 09/16/2008, -1/+3Not that good - here's an audio interview with the Director (F.W. Murnau) with stills of the movie (pretty cool, although short)
