- num63rs, on 08/28/2008, -3/+161Well of course there wouldn't be a Steward of Gondor because that character was a little boy when Bilbo made his trek over the mountains. This isn't a sequel or a story that happened even somewhat close in time to the events of the first three movies. It occurs about 60 years earlier. As for a second, connecting film, Denethor wouldn't be old enough to be played by John Noble.
- gbjxc, on 08/28/2008, -5/+63That's really a non-story.

- lotar732, on 08/28/2008, -5/+49Who gives a flying ***** about Denethor?
- ericjohnson0, on 08/28/2008, -3/+45Battle of Five Armies at the end. Awesome.
- cygnus2112, on 08/28/2008, -4/+35Most of the characters played by the "original cast" weren't alive during the days of Bilbo Baggins' adventures. Minus Gandalf and the Elves.
I suggest you pick up a copy of The Hobbit and have a read. A fairly decent book in it's own right. - Skooma714, on 08/28/2008, -4/+32What is the problem here?
Denethor wasn't an elf so aging is in play. A prequel from that kind of range would obviously preclude him from playing the same character. - apologeticus, on 08/28/2008, -3/+23I think you mean the Necromancer.
Yes, I win the nerd war!!!! - mdmanic, on 08/28/2008, -1/+18Isn't sauron the necromancer? the witch king is someone else (the big ring wraith)
- Soonago, on 08/28/2008, -1/+16Come. Sing me a song.
- mdmanic, on 08/28/2008, -1/+15he's ***** gandalf dude
- awtripp, on 08/28/2008, -1/+13yes, they will be joyous and happy. that's the nature of hobbits.
- Fullvinyl, on 08/28/2008, -0/+12Considering Gandalf lived for "300 lives of men", I don't think they really need to make Ian McKellen any younger for The Hobbit,
- apologeticus, on 08/28/2008, -8/+20buried as a non story
- theodenking, on 08/28/2008, -0/+11The Necromancer is Sauron, in "disguise", and the Witch-king was the name of the head of the Ringwraiths when he ruled an evil kingdom in the North, about a thousand years before the events of the Hobbit.
Now who wins the nerd war? - eliotmat, on 08/28/2008, -2/+13SMASH THE DISHES CRACK THE PLATES THATS WHAT BILBO BAGGINS HATES!
- Pandalemon, on 08/28/2008, -0/+10Hopefully the second film would be Bilbo's journey home. The book mentions that he has adventures returning home but skips straight to the end. No chance of them doing that though I suppose.
- LittleSteve2005, on 08/28/2008, -2/+11Indeed
- NoCt1, on 08/28/2008, -1/+9um. Are you on digg also?
- Halsfield, on 08/28/2008, -0/+8john noble was as unwatchable as john noble? ....what ?
I thought he did a good job of playing an insane, completely heartless parent that favored only one son and rejected the other, he also was a slobbering disgusting example of what happens when evil men get their hands on power that isnt theirs (aka aragorns crown). Could he be replaced in an instant? yea, but i think he did alright for a relatively small part. - awesometastic1, on 08/28/2008, -2/+10the necromancer was just Sauron before he was driven down to Mordor to stay (if you know your middle earth mythology). So if Gandolf singlehandedly drove him down, we'd all be wondering why he just didn't off him in the LORs. *goes back to mothers basement*
- Halsfield, on 08/28/2008, -0/+8just curious, but why would they let tom cruise into the hobbit ? that seemed kinda random to me.
- Wangeye, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8I wasn't aware that being knowledgeable about something was a deficiency.
- Oztog, on 08/28/2008, -5/+12All it needs is wizards and midgets, and I'll be happy.
- cvindustries, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7They should have made it a one year HBO television special. 1 hr episodes for each chapter. It's a children's book, so each chapter has a natural rhythm to it that translates well to a 1 hour episode.
Almost nothing gets cut out that way. It'd be like Band of Brothers, only 23 episodes long. - BeforeSputnik, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7'cause he's short, duh!
- Lionhart, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7It's Smeagol.
- Halsfield, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7im sure a lot of people will agree with you. Except for the millions of people worldwide that thought it was one of the best trilogies ever filmed.
- Wangeye, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7It's not amazing that people don't understand how it works, what's amazing is that a bunch of people don't understand AND try to argue their point.
- lukas88, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7If you are not a nerd, what are you doing here?
- jgzman, on 08/28/2008, -2/+8Between 'The Hobbit' and "Fellowship of the Ring."
Given that Frodo had had no adventures before the Ring, and he was 33 at the time of Bilbo's Birthday party, AND that Bilbo seems to have had no major adventures in that same timespan, I'm gonna go ahead and agree with OP here. - awtripp, on 08/28/2008, -2/+7http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC73PHdQX04
Not a rick roll. It's a spock roll if anything. - theodenking, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5Actually Sauron and the Wizards are the same type of being (Maia, and more analogous to angels than demigods) though yes Sauron is much more powerful than any of the Wizards.
- BigPapi, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5He was referring to the CONNECTING movie, between the Hobbit and the LOTR, not the Hobbit itself. And I agree, if there's a whole plot about Aragorn then it would seem stupid to have someone besides Viggo.
- mnky9800n, on 08/28/2008, -1/+6Better than the LotR in my opinion.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5"Considering there is no book 'connecting' The Hobbit to Lord of the Rings"
yes there is: "Unfinished tales" - Arramol, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5Like SirFoxx said, the wizards were forbidden by the Valar from matching Sauron power for power, and furthermore, Sauron would've been stronger in LotR than in the Hobbit since he was still gathering back his power. Sauron, as Morgoth's chief lieutenant, would almost certainly be much stronger than Gandalf at his full strength. And the answer to theodenking's question is that I win the nerd war!
- lukas88, on 08/28/2008, -2/+6Sounds like Del Toro is playing hard and fast with my childhood memories. I was pretty happy to hear he was directing The Hobbit because I think he is way more imaginative than Jackson. But this sequel business might be crossing the line.
- LittleSteve2005, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5Filming the Silmarillion would be like filming the bible! ....WTF?
- obilon, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4DUGG b/c it's funny. And true! Midgets and Wizards = happy geeks.
- black27696, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5Yep. Denethor, for all his faults, was extremely intelligent and had amazing foresight. He had just been brainwashed by Sauron, who by all accounts can only be matched in pure will by Aragorn, and to a lesser extent, Gandalf. John Noble just seemed weak and foolish as a Steward. They did the same thing with Faramir, who's a complete jackass in the movies.
And to answer the question before it's asked, yes, Aragorn actually matches Sauron in a battle of minds better than Gandalf. As the King of Men, he was always destined to be the one that could go up against Sauron and defeat him, Gandalf was not meant for that, and no single wizard has enough power to defeat Sauron because he is a demigod. His power far outstrips any wizards, but in The Hobbit the wizards together are able to push him to Mordor, but not kill him. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4i would be happier if they made a movie about the Children of Húrin
- fitztek, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4*Silmarillion*
But they couldn't make a movie out of that... it's already difficult enough to follow all the characters in the book. - brettg102, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I'm thinking this should be a new meme....
- theodenking, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3You're embarassing yourself malex. The article talks about the second 'Hobbit' film del Toro will be producing which any self-respecting Tolkien nerd would know is going to cover the events between the Hobbit and LotR, specifically Aragorn's journeys. And a significant part of his journeys was spent in Gondor where he became a famous hero (under a false name) for defeating the Corsairs.
- Halsfield, on 08/28/2008, -6/+9I don't have the ability to not see this movie, even if there's just a microscopic piece of the magic that was in the original trilogy it makes it worth seeing. I'm really not as excited going in however. There seems to be a lot of red tape and legal bs to go through this time around. i like del toro's work but i just don't see it being directed by anyone besides jackson if they truly want to do another film just as good as the first 3. Why they couldnt just put aside their egos and work things out with jackson i will never know. I think del toro will do his absolute best, and it will definitely be something to behold, but i think jackson was the best guy for the job and rather than worrying about who would replace denethor if the need arises, we should be worrying more about the change of director.
As far as Denethor being previously committed to another project ? so what, that doesnt meant they couldnt replace him in an instant. To say that there will be no battles in gondor territory is just silly, even if they refused to replace denethor with another actor(regardless of the age difference in this film's timeline from the timeline of return of the king making him so much younger for these movies) they could still make it work. This is just a nerdy version of fearmongering to draw attention to and build excitement for the movie through discussion on forums.
This is like saying we dont have a guy to get into the wookie suit to play chewbacca, we cant have return of the jedi. - 1longtime, on 08/28/2008, -2/+5I have zero confidence in Del Toro. He is likely to put an extra set of eyeballs on the elves just because they look spooky. The guy lives in a makeup studio.
Taking creative control away from Jackson: what a colossal ***** up. - Halsfield, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3if it were that and not just a bunch of idiots burying things in unison without reading them it would be fine. unfortunately it is the latter. maybe you already knew that are were making a joke though.
- malex, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4Alright, I will.
"The Hobbit" is set 60 years before the events in "Fellowship of the Ring," and contains only a very small subset of the characters who appear in the film trilogy. None of the events of that book take place in Gondor.
Consider yourself educated. - Halsfield, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3i think any of the characters that will be in this duo of movies that was also in the trilogy will jump at the chance to be in the hobbit and its sequel. However, some people will have contracts to do other movies, will have aged too much (ian holm) or have other problems like fights with new line over their contracts etc so they dont get screwed over like jackson did and have a crazy legal battle to get what they earned.
Denethor is easily replaced if they put him in the second movie ( i dont think he has anything to do in the hobbit besides be born maybe, and john is a little old to be a baby) as a young man or something. There are more important things to be concerned with about this movie than who's playing denethor imo. -
