- AmusedToDeath, on 05/24/2009, -5/+65I wish this would make Hollywood realize there is no point in giving mega-budget stuff like this to hacks like McG. The guy couldn't direct traffic and has proven this with previous efforts, yet they hand him one of the biggest tent-poles of the summer. You would think the mega success of Dark Knight would have taught them that talented director + great script = $$$
- AmazingSteve, on 05/25/2009, -4/+51It lost me 10 minutes in a soon as the young ***** Kyle Reese says "come with me if you want to live." It's a pretty movie, but it's an empty bag that starts throwing T2 cliches left and right in the last 40 minutes. It gets painful. Come to think of it, it began to not look good when a couple walked in with their kids who couldn't have been more than 9 or 10. What the ***** it wrong with making R rated movies these days?
I say we take off, and nuke MCG from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. - ZhiZaki, on 05/24/2009, -10/+56That's just horribly sad.... part of my inner child just died.
- Leminnes, on 05/25/2009, -3/+44Are you surprised? T4 = Teenager to Adult. Night at the Museum 2 = Baby to Adult. Of course one is going to make more money over the other.
- alanocu, on 05/24/2009, -8/+45First the TV series is canceled, now this? This is a travesty.
- StayPuft85, on 05/25/2009, -0/+31I'd be more upset if T4 was actually good. I'll probably get digged down but its no secret that T3 and this new one aren't good movies. Did people really think McG was going to put something out in the same level as T2 Judgment Day?
So instead of a crap movie being number 1 at the box office, a slightly crappier movie was number 1. Meh. - Amorn, on 05/25/2009, -0/+30***** amateurs
- MCA2142, on 05/25/2009, -1/+29This is ***** distracting.
- GawtMilk, on 05/25/2009, -1/+24Holy ***** spoiler alert, batman.
- Betrayal, on 05/25/2009, -0/+20Please James Cameron save Terminator & Alien Franchises
- RunDiggMC, on 05/25/2009, -1/+19I can't believe anyone would pay to see a piece of crap like "Night at the Museum" when there are tons of great sci-fi movies in theaters now -- like "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past."
- lewzer, on 05/25/2009, -0/+18So this guy actually went around and told people to call him by "McG"?
He sounds like a bonafide douche bag. - bruin8uclap, on 05/25/2009, -5/+21I don't agree with those who classify this movie as "meh". To me, this movie was TERRIBLE. AmusedToDeath you are spot on when you call McG a total hack. I watched this travesty at the ArcLight in Hollywood and people were openly laughing during the some of the scenes. The scene that made me laugh personally was when John Connor attempts to resuscitate Marcus. It was just so mind numbingly awful, I just couldn't contain myself. I can suspend my disbelief when movie logic goes awry to a point, but when it gets this bad, Hollywood is just insulting my intelligence. The movie was just stupid from the beginning. <SPOILER ALERT> ( My confirmation came early on when, upon getting wind of the Terminator's hit list, John Connor has to think about it before sighing, "Of course, kill Kyle Reese and I am never born." You had to think about it!??! Terminators have been going after your family for years now and I feel insulted that you had to think about why they had to kill Kyle Reese! Oh, and it gets better: after capturing Kyle Reese, they keep him captive. Why not just kill him? Even if you're trying to draw John Connor in, its not like he's going to stop looking for him unless he gets confirmation that he's dead. I could go on and on about the stupid things in this movie but I will give just one more example: after serving the machine's purpose, the machines deem it fitting to tell Marcus Wright that he's been a pawn of theirs all this time. Why!?!?! What are they James Bond villains? He's served his purpose so kill the bastard? But no, lets allow him to live and make a conscious decision to destroy the machines and save John Connor. Sweet jesus. In McG's future apparently robots are stupid. Humans are also stupid. And boring. And they yell a lot.
To paraphrase a line in the film: McG did the one thing the machines could never do, they killed John Connor's mojo.
BTW I seriously contemplated NOT posting that spoiler alert because I believe I'd be doing a public service by causing people to NOT see this abortion of a movie. - badwithcomputer, on 05/25/2009, -0/+16just got done reading this really long article on chud that goes through the original 'terminator: salvation script' and explains how everything fell apart. massive spoilers, but a pretty interesting read:
http://chud.com/articles/articles/19577/1/EXCLUSIV ... - enozten, on 05/25/2009, -2/+17travesty? the travesty is they made another mediocre if not ***** terminator movie. it was a tragedy when they hired McG, maker of ***** movies and tv shows like fast lane and charlie's angels 1 and 2 to direct our beloved franchise.
i'm hoping it crashes and burns so he doesn't make another 2 ***** versions. if he stops now maybe someone with some talent can reboot it in 5 years. - BullBearMS, on 05/25/2009, -2/+15I caught the new Terminator flick on Saturday, and frankly... Meh.
Good effects, but over the course of two hours the only character you managed to develop enough to make interesting was the Terminator? Dropping John Connor's character and the resistance commanders altogether would have improved the movie by focusing on the characters in the movie that I and my friends actually cared about. - DarkBlueAnt, on 05/25/2009, -5/+18I'm actually kind of happy. I hate seeing classic franchises milked like T4 did. Crappy movie.
- HAL90000, on 05/25/2009, -3/+16And T4 wasn't?
- EggAndMuffin, on 05/25/2009, -1/+13I WANT YOU OFF THE ***** SET, McG.
- jrm125, on 05/25/2009, -1/+13The real travesty is the "shaky cam" technique that's getting used far too much in place of proper cinematography these days.
- Pixelante, on 05/25/2009, -0/+11Now that was ***** unprofessional.
- badwithcomputer, on 05/25/2009, -1/+13dugg your comment up for referencing aliens. mcg should call up jim and take some notes about how to position deadly robots from the future in front of the camera so the audience actually feels some excitement.
mr. cameron also wrote the ***** out of his pictures (terminator, t2 and aliens among others) and gave you fully developed characters, flawless story structure and a constant sense of what was at stake: the end of the human race.
james cameron will go down in history as one of the greatest writer/directors of all time with a passion for science fiction. if mcg is remembered at all, he'll be that dumbass who put his name twice in the opening credits of the film that made terminator 3 look like terminator 2. - Zarokima, on 05/25/2009, -3/+1453.5 million with 4096 theaters averages to $13,061.52 per theater for Night at the Museum 2.
43 million with 3530 theaters averages to $12,181.30 per theater for T4.
Night at the Museum 2 ran in over 500 more theaters and brought in less than a thousand dollars more per theater. It didn't win by much, but this is saddening nonetheless. - jrm125, on 05/25/2009, -0/+11Well, now we know why Christian Bale was so pissed off all the time...
- ksgant, on 05/25/2009, -0/+11Seriously....and what's with his made-up name "McG"? I guess that's more hip than his real name, Joe Nichol.
- masamunecyrus, on 05/25/2009, -5/+15I'm not a die-hard terminator fan, but it was definitely entertaining. They tried to throw some cheesy morals into the story that didn't make a lot of sense, and I feel that they tried too hard to make the ending a happy one instead of just letting people who should have died die, but I don't think it was a bad movie.
Regardless of its ratings (34% and dropping), I'd recommend seeing it. It was no Star Trek, but it was most certainly better than the terrible Dead or Alive movie, which has a 35%. - mohsenxp, on 05/25/2009, -2/+11I'm not sad. I hope this acts like a red light to Hollywood produces who were waiting to produce T5.
Give it a rest already you *****.
People will go from 'Remember those 2 great films? T2 and T1? T2 being perhaps one of the best sequels ever made?' to 'ha you like the Terminator films? What a loser' if this carries on. Let them RIP already. - babylonian, on 05/25/2009, -0/+9A *****, brain-dead sequel outperformed a *****, braindead- sequel?!
- manx45, on 05/25/2009, -1/+9anyone saw T4 over in the states yet? how is it?
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -1/+9The only way to save them is to just let them rest in peace. The reason they get ***** up in the first place is because coked-up Hollywood execs decide to turn a good film into a successful franchise by making teen-friendly sequel, after sequel, after sequel, after sequel, after sequel.
- HappyScrappy, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7Summary says "at the holiday box office". Article does too.
Thursday is not part of the holiday weekend.
This is nibbling around the edges, this is a terrible open for T4. Even $56.4M is a huge underperform. - omnithought, on 05/25/2009, -0/+7The characters in T4 were about as filled out as the Olson twins...at birth. Save your money, folks; unless explosions are more important to you than any other aspect of film making.
- Chooxo, on 05/25/2009, -3/+10Just saw the first Night at the Museum yesterday on television, and it was a very fun film.
- hkrob, on 05/25/2009, -1/+8you should learn what a 'spoiler' tag is
- lonehunter01, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6!=
- kinerry, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6that's the problem
this is what keeps quality movies from comin out - mikemehak, on 05/25/2009, -1/+7Considering NATM 2 has an all star cast, family style comedy with jokes adults can enjoy.
Personally I look forward to seeing it over Terminator. - HappyScrappy, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6The plot is almost completely immaterial in a movie like that. It's a family movie and the kids aren't asking to go because they are impressed with the denouement.
- Digg32539, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6Wasn't it Kristanna Loken?
- AlJensen, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6Anyone figure out which scene he threw a fit in? I was trying to see which one he showed emotion in but he looks and acts exactly the same throwout the movie.
- MeatMountain, on 05/25/2009, -0/+6They took the Terminator and made it PG-13, then handed the keys to a ***** director and the flavor of the month actor, and replaced the killer robots with Helena Bonham Carter and killer motorcycles. ***** this ***** movie, ***** it dead.
- mohsenxp, on 05/25/2009, -2/+8You forgot dead actor*
- Vash_aka_TK, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5If McG actually wanted to make a decent movie then he should've gotten different writers than grab the same ones who wrote T-3, that was your problem right there. The look of the film was great, but the writing was terrible.
- RebornInFlames, on 05/25/2009, -2/+7I don't think anyone expects T2 to ever be matched. I wanted it to at least be better than T3, which it was.
- BigmasterJay, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5The reason is simple. Parents want a movie they fill comfortable bringing their kids to see. Playing at museums Imax theaters is a bonus.
- AmazingSteve, on 05/25/2009, -1/+6Everything is wrong with it. Christ, Reese's dream about the war with the machines in the FIRST Terminator is better than this entire movie.
- OzzzzSSzzzzO, on 05/25/2009, -1/+6I thought it was bad, fast action no story, a lot of the action wasn't even that good, the terminators were pretty lame. 5.5/10 I would give T2 8.5/10 T1 8/10. They threw in T2 quotes that sounded horrible "ill be back" "come with me with me if you want to live" I was covering my face in shame at this point...
- i4ybrid, on 05/25/2009, -1/+6WTF was that 'effect' doing in Star Trek? I totally didn't get the artistic direction...I guess there wasn't one. Hey, there's a new popular 'effect', let's use it for no reason!
- jrm125, on 05/25/2009, -0/+5T4 was a pretty big disappointment. I'm a big fan of the franchise...and I actually found myself bored. Maybe I was expecting too much (especially after the travesty of T3), but the thing could have had an epic scale, and instead was a load of BS.
The "infiltrator" doesn't even fit with the timeline (or logic for that matter). - jpop, on 05/25/2009, -1/+5Personally, whenever I see shaky cam, I assume they're going cheap and trying to hide bad special effects.
