- ixfazed, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23I liked it.
- AxeSwinger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I loved the first, the second stunk. This is my favorite even with the story gaps.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It was kinda long... but I liked it. Not the greatest movie but I had a good time.
Canon monkey was hilarious. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13stop pretending to be a girl
p'BLOCKED - Klarth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'd like to know how exactly a lighthearted campy pirate romp wound up evolving into a bizarre aristopunk epic fantasy adventure...
- DeathBorn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Everyone knows that girls don't refer to themselves as "this girl."
To Newsweek and everyone else:
Could you PLEASE stop using the "it's in 'Davy Jones' Locker'" phrase in every pirate movie review? It was funny the first time, now I just want to deep-six these people. - Sewende, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Ouch. Harsh review.
Well, I liked it. Even more than the 2nd one, mind you. - Yamaste, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Dugg you down for liking spiderman 3. Have you no shame?
- ghaltmann, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a fun, pirate-filled adventure.
If you were expecting Citizen Kane then go somewhere else. Us adventure-loving pirate fans were pleased. - De3po, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I enjoyed it... So I guess that makes me a dumbass american.. :/
- woojoo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9Buried as inaccurate.
- HouseofEl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The problem with this and spider man 3 is that everyone either didn't like it, or they thought it was "good". When will people realize that it doesn't take a massive budget and loads of special effects to make a greatmovie. It's still the same old story. Studios are looking for something they can sell on the side of something or toy. They could really give a ***** about the quality as long as it makes 400 million in its first weekend. I'm tired of huge "blockbusters" being just OK. The term blockbuster just means a huge budget now. It used to mean the film was so good that everyone wanted to line up to see it. Christ, I need a drink.
- Nodspy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Right I thought this was way better than the second one but not quite as good as the first. Also I liked spiderman 3 but by far the best movie of 2007 was Hot Fuzz.
- TheCash, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I get the feeling David Ansen just doesn't like sequels, period.
I thought it was good, right up until the end at least. About 15 minutes till the credits, it felt like the writers just got lazy and phoned the last few pages of script in. It wasn't anywhere near as jerky as the ending to number 2, but it felt like everyone got a glimpse of the finish line and just went on autopilot.
It was much more entertaining then 'dead man's chest,' and I didn't feel bored at any time, unlike DMC, which just got far too talky for a summer action film.
All in all, it hardly deserves the negative press it's been getting, and I am extremely critical of movies, even the summer popcorn variety. - freakout1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I liked the first one because it had a nice mix of action, drama, comedy, and a good story. I didn't like the second one because the action was pretty lame and they tried too much to be funny, which fails. I love the third one (this one) because it's starting to head back to the first movie, I think Disney realized this and got back on track. It had freakin' awesome action, some funny comedy, a story line that you won't like unless you know the entire thing and you're paying attention to what's going on (one of the things a lot of reviewers rag on)
But hey, that's just me. - gnslngr1919, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't really know what the haters were expecting with this movie. It is a theme-park-ride-based movie about rescuing a crazy pirate from what is basically hell. There are undead monkeys and squid-people. There is even ***** Keith Richards. Pirates 3 was always going to be a surreal summer movie, so get over yourselves and have fun at the theater.
- jsg7, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I liked it, too, but it wasn't great by any means. But nowadays I call it a win if I don't feel like I got ripped off by the ticket price...
- Klarth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2We're only halfway through the year, buddy.
- Teh_N3UT3R3R, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I liked it mostly for the same reasons as this guy:
http://phillryu.com/2007/05/27/10-reasons-why-pirates-3-actually-kicked-ass/
"I want a fight with hundreds of badass pirate ships firing on and boarding each other. I want Davy Jones and Jack Sparrow dueling it out in the middle of this fight, with Davy's CGI tentacles playing a pivotal role, and lightning striking left and right. And I want all of this going on in a giant whirlpool, that's sucking these ships up." - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7i just downloaded it.
- Comatose51, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The Keith Richards part was awesome and the movie is full of little cool parts but a lot of it was just lame and repetitive. My biggest complain is that some of these cool little parts didn't connect. The brethens court part was good I thought but what the hell is up with Elizabeth Swann giving speeches? Her character was just overdone and got really annoying. In fact, I think it focus way too much on her. Jack Sparrow was entertaining with his antics. The pieces of eight part was also pretty good. There are bits and pieces of cleverness or smart humor through out this movie but there were a lot of low level humor and disconnects in between.
I didn't expect anything from a theme ride movie from the first one but it proved me wrong. This one was a little disappointing. Part of the attraction of the first one was the pirate lores. By the third movie I guess they've exhausted it all and really just wanted to wrap it all up and go home. - kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2so the first two Disney movies based on a ride were art then?
- SpinMonkey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Burried as *****.. I loved this movie more that the second, and I was laughing almost the whole way through.. best 3 hours evar!
- mkmega, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2All professional critics are too self absorbed with the fact that they get paid for their opinions to give a decent review. Just because Pirates 3 was not an art-house film that carried heaps of meaning does not mean that it is bad or failed at what it set to accomplish. Pirates 3 is a blockbuster, a movie to entertain and entertain only - it is a Disney movie based off of a ride from the theme park. It is inherently a thrill ride for all, a movie that needs to be watched in a movie theater while munching on overpriced popcorn and cherry coke. I thought this was completely obvious. I enjoyed the movie for what it was and my expectations were met - it's about time some of these critics got over themselves.
- ghostfish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Buried as inaccurate because the movie was excellent.
- Ravenlock, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I was a big fan of it, and thought it more than made up for the missteps of the 2nd movie.
Saying it's the "least funny" of the three is flat out wrong. The jokes of the 2nd movie almost ALL fell flat, while several of the ones in World's End were great. I fail to see how anyone could NOT love the Jack-on-the-white-beach scene. - malacor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm in the minority of people who really liked the second one, but this one tried to do too much and did not execute. Plot holes, dangling story lines....
I did like the part with the crabs, however. - Comatose51, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The 1st one was the best. The 3rd one was pretty lame although the ending is kind of clever. No one is expecting an "art house film" here but some of it just got so... childish. It started to feel like a Michael Bay movie. Use any excuse for special effects. You don't need to have an "art hosue film" for it to be smart and funny. Check out Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
SPOILER AHEAD:
How does those two getting married in the middle of a fight even make sense? It simply didn't even follow. In fact most of the parts didn't even follow each other. It's like one writer went, "Hm... how funny would it be if those two married in the middle of a battle and the captain performed the ceremony." Well it's really not that interesting.
The whole Calypso part and ending was lamer than what I had expected. There could have been some interesting story to tell about Calypso and Davy Jones.
How does the entire fleet retreating with the destruction of the flagship even make sense? Or why would the Endeavor just sit there and not return fire at all? Come on! I was expecting a better battle than that. The battle between the Flying Dutchman and the Black Pearl was good for most parts except for the dumb marriage scene.
The last bit with Jack Sparrow telling the hookers off was just stupid, catering to the Jerry Springer crowd. In fact a good portion of the movie was.
The monkey was the funniest part of the entire movie. Starting the movie in Singapore was also pretty clever since it actually fits with the whole theme but also allows them to bring in those crazy Chinese pirates. Jack Sparrow was entertaining as always and his father was pretty badass, like someone out of a tough guy out of a Western or just someone who've seen it all. - designwiz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1hmmm i hope its worth the hype! kinda being waiting long for its release havent released it here(1st June) !!!
- gbro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"The longest, grimmest and least funny of the trilogy"
I wondered how funny the jokes could be when you start the movie by hanging kids.
Smithers: I have some sad news to report: a small puppy, not unlike Lassie, was
just run over in the parking lot.
And now it's time for the comedy stylings of Homer Simpson! - s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Nice to see this Inaccurate review off the front page.
- Nick5309, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Keira Knightley looked ultra-fine in this movie, 10/10 for that reason alone
- ljrich, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I actually liked the 2nd one quiet a bit, even though others hated it. But this movie just fell apart. The other 2 pirate movies kept me on the edge of my seat but this one, I spent half the movie bored.
I think the problem for me is they relied too much on magic and supernatural stuff. In the first movie, they had the cursed aztec gold, but they were able to pull it off and make it believable given the setting of the story. But Pirates 2 and 3, they just relied too much on the supernatural crap and it became too much of a crutch for the plot. Between sea goddesses, Davy Jones, the Krakken, magic spells, land of the dead, etc, it just became too hoaky and too far out there for me.
And another thing that bothers me about the movie, there was virtually no character development at all. None of the characters seem to really grow or change in this movie. And major characters in the first two movies seem to only be cameos in this movie, even though they are supposed to be directly related to the plot. Davy Jones only got 5 minutes of screentime through the whole movie up until the end, even though he was the reason these 2 movies exist storywise. - enovakrss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I liked it, and everybody I was watching with, liked it too.
People just have to complain, because they think they're smarter than the average. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2one more reason not to read newsweek
honestly, how can people be paid to write such weak, ***** and worthless drivel? - newbill123, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Pirates 3 was much better than Pirates 2, but still left me puzzled why much of the plot complexity was saved for the DVD release when audiences could watch it 3 times in a row.
As far as movies go, I strongly recommend
Hot Fuzz to guys;
Waitress to gals;
and am anticipating Knocked Up as a possible "3rd movie worth seeing in 2007".
Hot Fuzz was a bit too long at the end (every character had to have a resolution). Waitress had some amateur acting in scenes at the start but matured later. All the critics are saying Knocked Up is going to be great, but based on the reviews I'm nervously expecting that it might be anothe crude "Oh, that's what pregnancy is really like!" joke movie. Anyway, the year hasn't been a total loss.
(By the way, kids movies put out this year (e.g. Firehouse Dog, Surf's Up) have been really, really lame. Maybe Ratatouile and Underdog can be tolerable but based on the previews I'm having my doubts about even those two.) - Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1
Jim: "alright boys... we sold the first two.. people LOVED them.. what are we going to do for this last one?"
Bob: "Last One?... uh, they'll pretty much buy it based just soly on the fact that the first two rocked, right?"
Jim: "Yea... pretty much, just slap on Pirates III and we got Billions... just need a ... what's that thing called.... *snap* plot... yea."
Bob: "Great.. yes, I see where your going there.. what's that interns name?"
Jim: "Steve?"
Bob: "Hey, steve, your lucky day, bang out one of these... um, plot things"
John: "Actucally my name is John".
Bob: "Great steve, I'm going golfing... have it on my desk by tomorrow morning" - s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Yeah, AWE was the most inventive of the three which is the only thing that really made the original a good pirate movie. Yeah, it was too long so I just IM'ed my friend through the boring part.
- DiggUmFrog, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I am going to say that that movie was more confusing than any major hollywood movie i have. I should have known better than going and seeing it in the theater. Freakin' Disney. ugh.
- nubnub, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Meh it was okay, but kinda boring. The 3 don't fit together really the 3rd one starts going on about crap that was never mentioned once in other ones.
- RonNumbers, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Hah. I love the kicker for the review. So biting.
-- His villainy, he insists, “isn’t personal. It’s just business.” Indeed. - sylviarocks, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Am I the only one who didn't understand a single part of the movie and thought it was hideously long?? I think the review is dead on (writing with the knowledge that I probably will get buried).
- CrankyHippo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1*drive by argument & pulls up in car* ooooh Mr. Ansen! I DISAGREE!!!! *drives off*
- Yonson, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3What ever happened to 3rd time's the charm? First Spiderman 3 and then this...
- Raiu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0I wanted to like it I really did. My hopes were up when a lot of people said they enjoyed it despite reviews.
Then they were all crushed to oblivion when I had to actually sit through it. I seriously thought I was watching a movie made fan fic. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5So far trilogys are 0 for 3 this year in being good, but 3 for 3 in luring dumb ass America into going out and watching them.
- elizabethmuelle, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Darn near 3 hours of pirate songs made this girl's ears hurt.
- carinishead, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3Finally, someone who agrees with me. I went to it the night it was released and did not like it at all. It was way too long, too contrived, had terrible dialogue, and defined what is wrong with the motion picture industry today: films are no longer treated as an art, but an exploitation. Anything for a buck.
- Klarth, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2What? Spider-Man 3 was great.
- heat0, on 10/11/2007, -8/+0I liked it except for the knee...***** scene? Oh and the fact that its WAY TO ***** LONG.
Other than that it was fantastic.
