Alive in Joburg short
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ1vHRs_EOs - Ecochick, on 05/01/2009, -2/+37I love how scifi is always such a great lens through which to think about our current issues.
- scottmbeggs, on 05/01/2009, -3/+36Um...that went from Hotel Rwanda to WTF in under a second. Apparently Zuckuss the bounty hunter and his race are invading South Africa.
That's awesome. Yes, this is going to be really frakkin weird. - C0ntraRadical, on 05/02/2009, -0/+29It's so awesome they're actually making this. I remember seeing the "Alive in Joburg" short years ago and thinking how cool it could be as feature length film.
- socialpyramid, on 05/01/2009, -3/+23This gave me chills!
- DevSingh1359, on 05/02/2009, -0/+17I loved "Alive in Joburg" and I'm glad to see it's being adapted into a feature length film. I'm hoping that the movie will be a success...it could be a great way to re-energize the Halo movie that Blompkamp and Jackson were both attached to that fell apart a few years ago. Neill Blompkamp really seems like a visionary director who could break the videogame-to-film curse.
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -0/+13Hey cool, sleeper Sci-Fi. Would like to see this and Moon, both should be low on the special FX but high on the script.
Also, if you like South African Sci-Fi, check out Charlie Jade, which I dont think Americans will be able to buy it on DVD.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408378/ - Neiby, on 05/02/2009, -2/+14Ah...smart sci-fi. It's so good to see this kind of stuff. I'm so tired of action sci-fi like Independence Day and Transformers. It's time for stuff with a little more depth. I'd like to see a movie where the aliens are actually good for a change and aren't here to blow things up and dominate us. That sort of crap gets a little old after a while.
- ByrcheWroot, on 05/02/2009, -1/+13Last I looked around, we didn't look like insects.
- redbullflash, on 05/02/2009, -0/+12It's 'Alien Nation' with better aliens.
- DevSingh1359, on 05/02/2009, -0/+11"Alive in Joburg"

It was made by the same person (Neill Blomkamp) and is actually what District 9 is based off of. - Adrnshw6, on 05/02/2009, -0/+11Did you even watch the trailer?
- Larssonk22, on 05/02/2009, -0/+11"Peter Jackson saw the short and famously brought Blomkamp onboard to direct the big screen adaptation of Halo… which just as famously fell apart due to budget concerns and squabbling with Microsoft."
Has it been that long already, you mean we could have been watching Halo this August!?! Damnit!
D9 looks pretty good, the censored Alien made me chuckle, I was thinking why censor them they all look.... then it dawned on me. Bravo! - spookyttws, on 05/02/2009, -0/+10This would have had such a bigger impact had I not known it was a SciFi flick before watching the trailer. (Then again, I don't know if I would have watched the trailer if I didn't know it was a SciFi flick) Damn you Paradox!
- squatz, on 05/02/2009, -1/+10Elsewhere, a retarded monkey is using bootleg CGI software to develop the next Sci-Fi channel original movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSgLOvH_MMk - Neiby, on 05/02/2009, -0/+6How many of those sorts of movies are there? I can only think of Cloverfield. Besides, the documentary style suits this subject matter. I think you need to chill and open your mind.
I also saw Cloverfield and have no desire to ever see it again. I didn't care too much for it. - inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+6Yeah, because movies made out of First Person Shooters are ALWAYS awesome. *eyes rolled*
- MattBD, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5Kind of reminds me of Ian McDonald's Chaga novels, where the Third World is "invaded" by an entire alien ecology that spreads out from meteor impacts and while most people are fleeing from the encroaching ecosystem others make it their home. Great read, incidentally.
- Velenne, on 05/02/2009, -5/+10I love being a part of a generation of people so willing and eager to embrace the idea of friendly extraterrestrials. I don't remember which movie/story I heard this (ID4? Contact?) but what kind of civilization would cross the interstellar distances just to pick a fight? Seems to me you don't reach the pinnacles of technology if you remain a species beholden to and driven by a war-mongering instinct.
I sincerely hope that when -not if- we are contacted, whomever speaks for Earth doesn't make the kind of dire mistakes portended by this and other similar movies. I also hope it happens in my lifetime. :) - inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5I'd imagine that the face blurring serves to hide the actual, complete appearance of the alien from us, the audience, thereby increasing tension and anticipation about what they'll look like (or at least their "faces"). And in the context of the story, I'm guessing it's so that the alien can remain anonymous. He seems to be surreptitiously divulging sensitive information to some human g-man and you wouldn't want his comrades or human alien-sympathizers to be able to ascertain his identity.
And, yeah, I'm guessing what dawned on Lars was an "all black people look alike" joke. Even though that's obviously a stereotype and not true, the film does seem to play with the themes of xenophobia and racism, so it's appropriate in that context. - MattBD, on 05/02/2009, -0/+5I've just watched some of his stuff including that "Alive in Joburg", "Tetra Vaal" and "Yellow" and one word - wow. This guy makes seriously amazing films. I have got to see this film.
- oldhick, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Personally I think it's the height of stupidity to argue over fiction. There tons of reasons why ARTISITS give aliens similar attributes to humans. You're so smart you're an idiot. :)
Arguing over fiction and indicting the human race because of artists and writers is pathetic and ridiculous. - AmyVernon, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Looks great. Go sci-fi!!
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4It all depends on the context, really. In the original short film their ships are described as dilapidated eyesores so maybe they're some kind of slave race that made their way to Earth seeking liberty. Maybe they're even less welcome in "nicer". Or maybe the shanty towns are what their home planet looked like so they *choose* to live there instead of villas in southern France.
I don't know, my point is just that it's a teaser trailer so details aren't exactly forthcoming, so I'm choosing to keep an open mind until we learn a bit more about the plot. - Chairboy, on 05/02/2009, -4/+8The style strongly reminds me of a video floating around the internet about 4-5 years ago that composited what looked like robots or aliens in exoskeletons into an environment like this or something similar maybe in Asia.
Does anyone recognize what I'm describing? I just wonder if there's any relationship, the other film was presented in a documentary style as well. - tmyprod, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Cloverfield wasn't shot like a doc, it was shot like someone with a consumer camera. There is a tremendous difference.
- Frostek, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Why all this hate for "SS Doomtrooper"?
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 05/02/2009, -2/+6Aliens travel trillions of miles across the universe in interstellar spaceships using unimaginably advanced technology so that they can... live in South African shanty towns.
Yeah. I buy that. - ParticleMan420, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4aargh01 has figured out what scifi is all about!
give him/her a hand! - Eupatorus, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4No.
- Neiby, on 05/02/2009, -0/+4Someone dugg me down? lol That must mean there are people out there who think Independence Day and Transformers is good science fiction. If that person is over 16, that's scary.
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3It appears Charlie Jade is on Sci-Fi channel, on at an odd hour, 3am I think.
- Frostek, on 05/02/2009, -0/+3I'd rather watch Tetris : The Movie, than Halo thanks.
Also, this trailer is excellent. - Falldog, on 05/03/2009, -0/+3"The effects in the trailer look quite good, and while it may not be as flashy as a Star Trek or Transformers it may still be the most intelligent and thought provoking science fiction film of the year. "
Good! Smart sci fi over flashy explosion filled sci fi any day. (If someone could do both at once though, that'd be even better) - Metavised, on 05/02/2009, -1/+4I think you'd be interested in this:
Battle for Terra
http://www.battleforterra.com/
"A peaceful alien planet faces annihilation, as the homeless remainder of the human race sets its eyes on Terra. Mala, a rebellious Terrian teenager, will do everything she can to stop it." - neilmorr, on 05/03/2009, -1/+4I would hardly call it a gimmick. It's a stylistic choice. Some filmmakers and fans, including myself, feel that telling a story in this style has the potential to feel more real. How boring would it be if every sci-fi movie was framed in the exact same manner.
- inactive, on 05/02/2009, -2/+4I've been waiting for this a long time. "Alive in Joburg" was an amazing short and I'm glad it got expanded into this feature length version. Hopefully, this will help pave the way for the "Halo" movie these two wanted to do!
- oldhick, on 05/02/2009, -1/+3"Most likely aliens would look nothing like us. Thas whyI liked starship troopers iraquis."
Who cares? It's fiction. We have no idea what aliens might look like. Your guess is as good as anyone else's until we see some. - inactive, on 05/02/2009, -0/+2That should have been "nicer places". Sorry.
- Pixelante, on 05/02/2009, -1/+3What kind of civilization would cross an ocean to pick up a fight? Just ask Montezuma & Co. Hope aliens won't be a bunch of savages like the Europeans managed to be.
- flossdaily, on 05/02/2009, -1/+3What in the ***** are talking about?
- 1badarsemuther, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2I'm looking forward to this and Tim Burton's 9 after the summer movie season.
- Neiby, on 05/02/2009, -1/+3Why would it be a good movie? I only attempted to play Halo once, then later attempted to play Halo 2. I couldn't get into them, so perhaps I'm missing out on some story line. But doesn't the game basically amount to "Dude gets a special armored suit and blows ***** up" ?
- flossdaily, on 05/02/2009, -1/+3Because all science fiction is Star Trek!
- bnl771, on 05/04/2009, -0/+2V
- joeytcanada, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1Awesome - that looks creepy!!
- nazbot, on 07/10/2009, -0/+1This actually reminds me more of Childhood's End by Clarke.
- flossdaily, on 05/02/2009, -2/+3*you. What the ***** are YOU talking about?
