- Dumbledorito, on 11/21/2008, -0/+50The more I see of the trailer, the more I wish this had been a reboot more like the current "Battlestar Galactica" series, at least for the look of the costumes and ship. I mean, everything that's "non-canon" in the trailer looks pretty cool: The scaffolding around the ship (though why it's on the ground I can't figure out), the hoverbike cop, etc.
But those damn dippy uniforms. Just... update it somewhere. They made the originals that way because it was the 60's and they didn't have a budget. And the interior of the ship looks like a martini lounge got gang-banged by a truckload of iPods.

WHAT IS EVERY DAMN TREKKIES PROBLEM? There's going to be MORE Star Trek! Every Trek nerd should rejoice! If our options are no more Star Trek ever or a minor break with canon (which it sounds like is going to be explained away via temporal mechanics) I will be very pleased to choose JJ's Trek over none at all. Do people really want to see geriatric Shatner and Takei taking the Enterprise out for another spin around the quadrant? And the TNG movies were getting to be like the last few seasons of Voyager: soulless.
So if this is the new face of Trek, if a 'reboot' (or 'reimagining,' or whatever you want to call it) is what is required to save Trek, count me in. Any Trek is better than none at all. I know I'll be at the midnight showing dragging all of my friends along hoping for the best. I don't understand why every other Trek fan isn't doing the same. - rz8472, on 11/21/2008, -0/+15Ugh. The problem with this movie is that if you're going to do a reboot, then do a reboot. Don't try to salvage the original canon for the 2% of the audience who are die-hard fanboys and want a movie no one else will want to see. The altered timeline thing is a really half-assed plot device. It's the sci-fi equivalent of "a wizard did it."
The fact is a new movie based on the old characters would have had to violate the old canon no matter what, whether it be in ship design or technology or whatever. So if you're going to violate the canon, the only way to do it right is to rip it to shreds and do it all over. The new preview didn't convince me either. Thats not Kirk or Spock... It just looks like a really expensive fanboy movie. - darkphenox, on 11/21/2008, -0/+12It kinda sounds like they are trying to make a Star Wars out of this new Star Trek, which nothing against Star Wars, in fact i love it i just think they are 2 different types of science fiction, Star Trek is kinda like old style 1950s type of science fiction, along the lines of Dune and Foundation while Star Wars is more focused more on the action and less of the diplomatic (except the newer ones).

Spock should feel brilliant. Kirk should feel indomitable etc. Its not enough that they spout off certain sentences etc. It should be believable. For example- Patrick Stewart made a believable Captain; he had presence and gravitas!

If it's the former, Kirk is still a man of action, Spock is still brilliant and McCoy and Scotty are still effective comic relief."
This is why I'm worried it's going to miss the mark badly.
McCoy is not comic relief. I see Star Trek as Spock (logic) versus McCoy (emotion), mediated by Kirk (leadership). Neither Spock nor McCoy could be effective leaders because both are too extreme in their respective positions. Kirk bridges the gap, and the show is all about the decisions that leaders must make, and the responsibility they have in that regard.
To get this working, you need to have some kind of gravitas in the characters so that you respect all of their approaches and opinions on the moral dilemmas that they face every episode. That is where you get the dramatic tension from. The 6 TMP-era movies and the Original Series didn't do that? A film like this needs to be directed by someone who is a fan of the original. J.J. Abrams said, "Star Trek was never my thing." Find someone who's thing it was and let them direct.
