http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/02 ... - inactive, on 01/02/2008, -2/+27I think his bum is still sore from the popular reaction to Episodes 1-3.
- cheese06, on 01/02/2008, -3/+26I hope Lucas has 1% participation of the movie-making process. I trust Spielberg a lot more than Lucas.
- dn11, on 01/02/2008, -4/+25from the article - Lucas: "So instead of doing a 30s Republic serial, we’re doing a B science-fiction movie from the 50s. The ones I’m talking about are, like, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Blob, The Thing" ... "I know the critics are going to hate it,” he says. “They already hate it. So there’s nothing we can do about that. They hate the idea that we’re making another one. They’ve already made up their minds.”...."The fans are all upset,” Lucas says. “They’re always going to be upset. ‘Why did he do it like this? And why didn’t he do it like this?’ They write their own movie, and then, if you don’t do their movie, they get upset about it. So you just have to stand by for the bricks and the custard pies, because they’re going to come flying your way.”.......... "And if you don’t like the key piece at the center of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull—the MacGuffin—you’ll know who to blame"... .....is it just me or is Lucas totally insane, and out of touch - he comes off as a negative creep that seems to have total contempt for his own audience.
- TrueBuckeye, on 01/02/2008, -0/+17So let me get this right...the critics will hate it. So will the fans.
Now who exactly is left? Children under 5? - ScornForSega, on 01/02/2008, -7/+20Oh crap, Lucas got that involved?
Prepare for suckage of catastrophic proportions and the utter rape of your rosy Indiana Jones childhood memories May 22, 2008. - Frank_the_Tank, on 01/02/2008, -0/+12Spielberg at Comic-Con stated that this movie was for the fans, so I'm going to blissfully ignore Lucas's bitching and have every naive faith that the film will totally rock (even if it kills me).
- DreKor, on 01/02/2008, -2/+14No matter how many times I read what Lucas says about the movie, all I come away with is, "I'm a crazy old man with a beard who can't make up his mind." I admire artistic conviction and vision, but when all you can say about your movie is that the critics and fans will hate it, you need to reconsider what you're doing.
- onaps6453, on 01/02/2008, -3/+15I seem to remember a quote from Spielberg while doing press for this film that went something like this "I listen to George talk my ear off for an hour and then say "No"."
After hearing that, my hopes shot up 100%. I love lucas, he gave me Star Wars and the idea that BECAME Indiana Jones....and the fact that he made THX-1138 basically means that I owe him to see and listen to anything he has to say...i don't have to like it....but I will never completely tune him out. - noahw, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8This server went down last time. - totorototoro, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8"But when you get to the next level, whether it’s Tomb Raider or the Die Hard series, where you’ve got one guy with one pistol going up against 50 guys with machine guns, or he jumps in a jet and starts chasing a car down a freeway, you say, I’m not sure I can really buy this. Mission: Impossible’s like that. They do things where you could not survive in the real world. In Indiana Jones, we stay just this side of it.”
Well, except for the spirits flying out of the Ark of The Covenant and wiping the nazis off the face of the earth. Thats probably crossing to the other side of it :p - matt0r, on 01/02/2008, -0/+8no
- MavRevMatt, on 01/02/2008, -0/+7No.
- TalkingBanana, on 01/02/2008, -0/+6***** no.
- klethron, on 01/02/2008, -2/+6Indiana Jones and the Underwater Kingdom of the Digital Gungans. Lucas FTW. Starring Shia Lebeauf as Jar Jar Jones and Harrison Ford as my Grandpa.
- Hoogs, on 01/02/2008, -1/+5I actually really like him as an actor.
- freff, on 01/02/2008, -0/+4I don't owe George Lucas anything.
I might watch one of his movies, if I think it's good, but I don't owe the man a thing. - DannyBoy7783, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3Lucas's problem is he surrounds himself with yes-men. How else can you explain the ***** of the prequels? Any fan will tell you the dialogue was terrible and Anakin sucked and Jar Jar was an abomination. He's entitled to make what he wants, it's his money but ***** him for being a *****. If he wants to make GOOD movies he should seek input from people who won't be comfortable with his sharpie-over-concept art *****.
Star Wars and Indiana Jones don't belong to you anymore. They belong to the fans. If you are going to make more of them then do it right. - dn11, on 01/02/2008, -0/+3No, he's not there to make "fan" movies, he is there to make movies that have fast food tie ins and action figures. And did you just compare Lucas to Leonardo da Vinci? Enough said.
- alwilson, on 01/02/2008, -1/+4Well for the most part, isn't what he said true?
- thecrazyd, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2True George Lucas fans hate his movies. It is a hard life.
- noahw, on 01/02/2008, -1/+3and it went down
- inactive, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2Karen Allen is Back! And Cate Blanchett (all will love me and despair!!) gets me excited for this.
George Lucas' preemptive defensiveness however, makes me worried he has something to be defensive about...
Remember the last follow-up movies he worked on with stupid titles? - DannyBoy7783, on 01/02/2008, -2/+4Hey George Lucas, the real question is this: how many of those fan ideas are better than yours? A drunken monkey could have handled Episode 1-3 better than you.
- Hoogs, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2I really, really hope this movie doesn't suck.
- TalkingBanana, on 01/02/2008, -0/+2And Lucas. I guess he is just making it for himself now.
- fani, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Its probably sore from his wallet becoming fat and big after Episodes 1-3 is what I think...
- Eslamicolt3, on 01/02/2008, -2/+3I have faith. I think with the energy of Lucas coupled with the experience and vision of Spielberg, this project will come together. Lucas just likes to shoot his mouth off.
- yfguitarist, on 01/02/2008, -2/+3Not really, could you elaborate?
- MavRevMatt, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2Ah, but you see by linking to a blogspam post, we crash their servers, instead of the original.
- Amazetbm, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Calm down, he's not directing it or writing the script. Plus Spieberg is directing so I could be a great film.
- shadekeiko, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2I think what Lucas may have been trying to say is that there will always be people who expected something different, and therefore will be disappointed. Obviously with the recent crappiness of Star Wars episodes 1-3, he's a bit more sensitive to this fact and is perhaps trying to assure himself before the movie comes out that he knew it all along (if it is heavily criticized). I do think, though, he's being a bit of a drama queen. I have faith in the awesomeness of this movie - after all, something good must've happened in the screenplay writing process for Ford and Spielberg to finally get on board with the idea.
- dn11, on 01/02/2008, -1/+2I'm sure that's true - but he should have taken that as a clue that he's no longer in touch with his audience (the people that brought him his success in the first place). It's obvious he is all about just cashing in now - so why doesn't he just sit back, keep his mouth shut, and let more capable people handle the franchise? Instead he seems determined to insert his now deranged sensibility into the project whenever possible - predicting failure and disaster as he does so
- DannyBoy7783, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1I bet if you poll a hundred hardcore fans they would come up with a better story than Lucas did so ***** you for being one of his tard ass yes-men. it's people like you who suck up to him and don't hold him to any standards. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!
I have no resources, no money, no fame and I can come up with a better and more amazing story. That says something. Deal with it prick hole. - TedTschopp, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1What's the deal with this quote:
“Quick-cutting is very effective in some movies, like the Bourne pictures, but you sacrifice geography when you go for quick-cutting. Which is fine, because audiences get a huge adrenaline rush from a cut every second and a half on The Bourne Ultimatum, and there’s just enough geography for the audience never to be lost, especially in the last Bourne film, which I thought was the best of the three. But, by the same token, Indy is a little more old-fashioned than the modern-day action adventure.”
and then:
"Included is the first photo of Cate Blanchett who plays a Russian Agent Spalko."
and then this from Wikipedia regarding the Bourn books:
"However, unbeknownst (as yet) to Bourne, a Hungarian by the name of Stepan Spalko has now drawn Jason into a web—one which he cannot escape as easily as his professorial façade."
Did you catch it? Spalko....
WHAT? - dn11, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Forgetting the negative vibes brought on by Lucas for a moment - Cate Blanchett's character looks amazingly cool and somehow Karen Allen looks the same. And I loved the part in the interview where Ford says he put the costume on and suddenly felt the character of Indy come back to him. I have no opinion of Shakira La Beef (yet). I still have my hopes up.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1***** LaBeef is more like it
- flammetirar, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2Dude! Frickin' spoiler warning next time! Don't put spoilers in your frickin' summary of the article!!
- DeepNarcosis, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Just remember, "It's not the age, it's the mileage..."
- DeathfireD, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1"***** why does Mr. Jones have a light saber this time" >.
- funkytaco, on 01/02/2008, -1/+1People in Hollywood probably do have a clue that people don't like their work. I'm sure George Lucas knows it's a common consensus that his latest trilogy was cheese. But, just like anybody else in Hollywood, you work as much as you can until people quit paying you to be in the movie business; i.e. Freddie Prinze, Jr. (thank the noodly appendaged monster, by the way).
- tgc1, on 01/02/2008, -3/+3You know what though, he's right. He makes what he makes. If you like it, you go see it. He is not there to make a "fans" movie. If you're a fan, then naturally, you like the mans work. But if you bitch and complain about it then why are you a fan in the first place? Again, he's not there to make your movie. If you want to make a movie a certain way, then you make it. He makes his movies the way he makes his movies. That's all there is to it. I mean nobody went up to Leonardo DaVinci and said "Why isn't Mona Lisa smiling?!" I mean common. Some people seem to have mistook the arts for something that they get imbue through proxy to an artist to produce something. Wrong. The artist produces something, and if you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't. It's a creative expression for their enjoyment.
- onaps6453, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0Do it right? You mean do it like you would do it? A bit of a selfish comment i think...
The film belongs to the film maker. We just get to experience their world...and I'm thankful for it. - onaps6453, on 01/03/2008, -0/+0How do you think it's good if you haven't seen it yet? This is my point, I am saying that I will give all of his movies a chance...
You took my comment a bit too literally... - KnightWhoSaysNi, on 01/02/2008, -3/+3I think he's being a realist.
- kyleandstan, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1He's toooo freakin old!!! He's gonna break his hip running from a snake or something!
- markwilcox, on 01/02/2008, -2/+1Slashfilm servers won't crash, they just copy news from other places, put a digg link and send their armies.
