- Ac1dburn, on 02/02/2009, -1/+85$10 a month and I can get rid of cable
- Sokkratez, on 02/02/2009, -0/+55Misleading headline. It showed up in a survey, that doesn't mean they're going to.
Granted, they probably will. - meeces, on 02/02/2009, -2/+41I would pay more for something like this. It's much more convenient than waiting for the mail.
- xptoast, on 02/02/2009, -0/+38I want to be able to log into a website and buy certain channels for a one month period. Just watch them on my computer and be able to do a tivo type thing so I didn't have to watch everything. So let's say I just want to watch: Adult swim, comedy central, cartoon network(is that what adult swim is on?), and Discovery channel....then I would be able to just pay a certain price for each and add them to a cart and check out when I am done. Then at the end of the month if I don't change it then it would just stay the same and bill me again. Just to my credit card or paypal or w/e. Not this bundled channel crap. That and if I could do it on my computer and do a tivo kind of thing that would just be awesome. Being able to update my service from home would be awesome too. Like if in the middle of the month I wanted a new channel I just buy a new channel prorated for the rest of that month. It would be awesome.
- kraftj, on 02/02/2009, -0/+20God I hate it when Digg title says "Netflix to launch..." and article says "Netflix HINTS at..."
I wish Digg had a feature that would let us mark their submission as "misleading title" - inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+15You already can. Hulu.com for most NBC/Fox shows, and abc.com for ABC series (Lost).
- madvibe, on 02/02/2009, -0/+10I dugg your comment. Wish I could digg it twice. I hate cable!!
- gluesniffined, on 02/02/2009, -0/+10I welcome streaming services such as this. The TV folks need to get their heads out of their asses and start gearing up for the future. I predict that everything will be streaming video within the next 5 to 8 years; local TV, HBO, Discovery, etc.
Seriously, I would much rather pay $20.00 or $30.00 a month to subscribe to a legitimate service that could provide the specific content I wanted than pay $14.99/month for a news server and another $2.00/month for an NZB indexing site and have to deal with all of that mess. No more torrents, no more NNTP, no more BS. The only other alternative is Cable or Satellite where I would pay outrageous amounts of money and only use 1% at most of the content provided. Yup, still a rabbit ears guy here....and I do already have my digital set top boxes :-)
Yeah, I know about Hulu and others....but I want to watch the stuff on my TV like a normal person and not slumped over my computer monitor. - greensky, on 02/02/2009, -1/+10Yup, and Comcast/other cable companies are NOT going to be happy about this.
- avatar28, on 02/02/2009, -1/+9Why should you have to pay more for a loaf of bread at the gas station up the block compared to the grocery store a couple of miles up the road? Better still, why should you have to pay more to go into Blockbuster or Hollywood Video and rent a movie than what it costs for you to get it from Netflix? Why should you have to pay more for a movie from On Demand than you do to rent one even from the video store?
It's called the convenience factor. You don't have to wait for the disc to arrive or even for it to download to your computer and it's never out of stock. So if you get the urge to watch something you can do it right away instead of, at best, two or three days from now. - verto351, on 02/02/2009, -1/+9I wouldn't be opposed to paying an additional fee for "premium" content, but it would have to be something more enticing than HBO and the like.
Hopefully the movie studios and companies will cooperate with Netflix to bring more movies, especially new releases, to the Instant Watch. It would be great to get all your movies streaming online. Save the consumer time having to wait for mail delivery, and save Netflix money having to ship and own the physical media. - Eldorian, on 02/02/2009, -0/+7That would get rid of a lot of ***** channels because I doubt many people would pay for them.
Which isn't a bad thing IMO. - qpid, on 02/02/2009, -0/+7but G4 and MTV speak for my generation!
/s - picosan, on 02/02/2009, -2/+9What the hell are you talking about?!?! You can get some awesome classics and independent films and even a few recent ones, and even TV shows like The Office, 30 Rock, and the only real good season of Heroes. They even have the whole Back to the Future trilogy there! So why don't you take your comment, make like a tree, and get outta here!
- inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+7i got rid of tv years ago
i would be on this in a heartbeat
i have had the same dvd out for about a year :)
i only use the streaming service but i do feel frustrated that many of the really great movies are not instant
instant gratification / quality content has got to be the marketing model to set the standard for all time - DiggasWAttitude, on 02/02/2009, -0/+7And rabbit ears for HD ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS. I watched the Super Bowl in 1080 and it looked better with rabbit ears than with my old Comcast HD. Sucked not being able to pause/rewind but for almost $100 less a month I can get over it.
- amoore2600, on 02/02/2009, -0/+7I wish that Netflix would start adding Close Captioning and additional audio tracks (Directors commentary and SAP) to its Watch Instantly service before adding a premium service like HBO.
These features will set Netflix apart from companies like Apple and the Playstation Network.
However, I would pay more for premium service like HBO. - rayskin, on 02/02/2009, -1/+7This title is misleading. A survey and an actual product launch are two different things. No Digg.
- freezerburn666, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5netflix not in canada is kind of *****, especially since you cant use the free trial on 360....
- thebuggalo, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5Another Digg article where people can post comments about how they don't own a tv.
- smoger, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5get the 2 week trial and see for yourself if its acceptable for you
- FredFredrickson, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5Except you're probably getting your internet service from a cable provider, and they'll likely put the kibosh on the whole thing by placing unnecessarily restrictive caps on bandwidth and speeds.
- Bulletbillx, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5I want that but on TV. A la carte pricing for cable would be awesome.
- Testiculese, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4I can't see how Having 4 HD channels would be more expensive than the $150/m it would cost to get access to those same 4 HD channels. I can't get National Geographic HD without signing up for the super-duper-wowee package.
The only reason that it would not work is that the cable companies would illegally price-fix. 90% of these channels have commercials out the ass, but we're being told those same channels would go out of business? Pure, unadulterated, grade A American *****! Besides, half those channels do deserve to go out of business. Why should I be paying to keep HSN on the air?
I won't subscribe to TV at all because of this racket. I have a brain, and it's much better served on other things. That and my ass won't expand to fill up all available couch space. :) - bluntwrap, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Being in Canada I get to miss out on this good stuff! I wish Netflix would come to Canada!
- zeebo, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Wish there were more documentaries, and stuff from Discovery like Mythbusters. Also wish they'd get access to things like new Doctor Who episodes more quickly.
The only thing that annoys me are situations like with the first season of MacGyver where they have the whole season, except for one episode which is only available on dvd. - smoger, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4already got rid of cable. netflix/hulu/rabbit ears as specified above.
$30(lifetime) for playon to watch hulu on my xbox 360 and $10/month for netflix. - deslock, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4It's actually the audio that is the biggest issue right now. They will slowly keep tackling the HD content, but for some reason they think nobody cares about multi-channel audio and it's annoying.
Watching Batman on Apple TV without surround sound? Please, no thank you. Streaming from netflix same thing? No way.
I'm not nearly as concerned about the HD picture... if I could get full DVD quality streaming (with audio) I'd be perfectly content with my upscaling receiver and HD screen. I know they'll keep upgrading to more HD titles. - WafflePirate, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5Depends on your ISP. If bandwidth is scarce, the mail approach is the only way to not get your speed capped.
- DiggChainey, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4They already offer the Starz channel streaming.
http://www.netflix.com/StarzLive - Aleman360, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5It's really not, unless you only want to watch new releases.
- exscind, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4While I agree, in fairness one must also consider the cost of Gold Xbox Live.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Quality depends a lot on your internet connection speed. Only a few things are available in HD at the moment, and then don't expect Blu-Ray quality.
And even then, don't expect Dolby Digital surround or DTS audio. - EarlOfLade, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Meh!
If I can get the movie that opened on Friday night streamed like this on Saturday, I might be interested, but old movies? Not really. - smackydoodle, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3I want to put it in your ear hole. It wouldn't fit at first, but after a while....
- NaziHatinChimp, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Won't digg this because the title sucks but I pay 8 bucks right now and don't really use the shipping service. I would gladly pay more for more content. However if it was just HBO I wouldn't care as I have it on OnDemand.
- jsdratm, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3It is based on your bandwidth with 3 levels of resolution
- nonymous666, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3http://blog.netflix.com/2008/11/encoding-for-strea ...
- deslock, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3This is exactly it. Seriously. I'd pay just about anything they want.
Think about it, who wouldn't? If you pay for cable TV now you pay at least $40 month plus fees. And that doesn't give you access to most movies.
So for $50/month, I'd get seriously anything I want streaming? Heck yeah. TV shows are included of course, even the latest ones (Heroes for example is up on there same day).
For complete access to all movies, tv shows (when they air) and HD, I'd pay whatever. - anubis2night, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3One thing no one is considering is what the hell HBO has to offer lately that would justify the $10? Entourage granted, but their other great series are gone. The wire, Sopranos, Deadwood, all of them were great but they are no more. I'm sure it would be like Starz and you'll get access to that months movies on demand but I for one wouldn't want to pay another $10 for that right. As for comparing it to Hulu, am I the only one that finds Hulu and the rest of the Networks offering for web streaming to be almost useless? Every time I want to catch something on these sevices it's almost always only the last few episodes that they have available. If they made the whole season available as it was aired it might be worthwhile but so far it seems like a fail to me. Of course this doesn't take Daily show or Colbert into account. ABC is the only one that's even close to offering a good service for their shows and even that is less than desirable.
- seldon21, on 02/02/2009, -1/+4This doesn't make sense. What about providing more "new" content. Check the list of options, they are selling the same thing that hulu, joost and others are offering for a small interruption. I support and have supported this Netflix service but I am and will pull my support soon unless they get more viable content. Premium is just another word for we have reached the peak for our current service so now we need to change the business model.
- Testiculese, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3That is awesome, and that's why they will not do it.
I've wanted this same setup for over 15 years now. Still isn't happening, so I still don't subscribe to TV service at all. - Ica7us, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3I have netflix streaming and a 360 - and I have a broadband connection which arguably, it's not great but its not awful. So most streamed quality starts in HD - then a few seconds in it says something like "your connection has slowed, we are adjusting quality to prevent further delays" then it looks like about as good as a youtube clip in normal quality blown up to be huge on my TV.
What I want - I want to watch the content in HD, so I will gladly wait half an hour to watch a movie while it buffers the HD version. - avianeddy, on 02/17/2009, -0/+3the end of cable/satellite is nigh
:D - LowFuel, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Wow, from "Netflix to launch" in the headline, to "Netfix may be considering" in the subheadline.
Way to sensationalize!
I for one hope they decide to hold a meeting to consider considering it. - mbern1008, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3plus who said they are saving anything. Does anyone know how much the extra bandwidth will cost them as well as the licensing fees.
- smoger, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3or an xbox360 for $199, which millions of people already have
- haqattaq, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2make it $4.99 and we have a deal. I'm already getting gouged for Netflix, Tivo, and Mediacom.
- TVarmy, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2The FCC was actually considering incentivizing a la carte cable, since the technology is now widely available and cheap, especially with a digital decoder box. But I think they decided not to do that, as they realized that would probably just drive up the cost of cable in the confusion of a price restructuring. Plus, channels that count on channel surfers to fulfill their purpose, evangelical channels and home shopping channels, were upset a la carte would lose them their audience.
Personally, I think it'd be cool if a cable or fiber company were to offer a set top box and stream content from networks on demand, charging per show or offering a subscription of so many hours a month, as well as a free or discount option if you choose to watch with unskippable ads. - deslock, on 02/02/2009, -0/+2Apple TV is so far from this it isn't funny. I have the freakin thing and it pisses me off that they've squandered the whole concept so terribly.
For $6-8, I can rent two stinking itunes movies... that's it. I went one month trying just apple tv, no netflix and just to watch the same movies netflix gave me it cost me $24 that month.
Until Apple can figure out how to do subscriptions, their product is going to suck. Heck, even MS figured it out with music. For 8$ a month I Netflix with streaming. Without Netflix, I get itunes and a box to play them on... i.e. something my PC already does.
Oh yeah, and I already own an xbox so I don't need the apple tv for netflix. The only thing apple tv added was the ability to do tivo-ish functions, which don't work on streaming content anyway since you can't download it.
Why the hell did I get an Apple tv for again? There just isn't a value proposition. -
