- thefangedrabbit, on 07/09/2009, -5/+1009The lowest grossing movie with the highest tomatometer is the Iron Giant, which is about a giant robot.
The highest grossing movie with the lowest tomatometer is Transformers 2, which is about giant robots.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm - internetisscary, on 07/09/2009, -3/+412America has spoken --- we want more robots.
- Leminnes, on 07/10/2009, -2/+328Iron Giant (or its director, I guess) did get its day. The Director, Brad Bird, went on to join Pixar and direct both The Incredible and Ratatouille. I'm sure he's making plenty of money nowadays.
I saw Iron Giant when I was 10 and I absolutely loved it. Still do to this day. It is a fantastic movie and certainly deserved more acclaim and money then it received. - chuckerton, on 07/09/2009, -24/+303The stupid outnumber (and outspend) the intelligent, so it's hardly surprising that cynical forms of entertainment targeting the dumb should be very, very profitable.
- DrewBlood, on 07/10/2009, -3/+269Iron Giant. He was actually in a good movie.
- OfficeSpacing, on 07/10/2009, -15/+269The variable is Megan Fox.
- DirtyVicar, on 07/10/2009, -5/+207My brain is hurting trying to figure out this coordinate system.
- Leminnes, on 07/10/2009, -6/+182But one is a ***** movie and the other is not.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm - RobotKeaton, on 07/10/2009, -3/+152The Iron Giant made tanks completely disappear. In full out weapon mode, he'd destroy Optimus Prime.
- amcnair, on 07/10/2009, -3/+150No contest. Iron Giant survived a nuclear blast and re-entry. Besides, he's Suuuperman.
- RoroCo, on 07/09/2009, -6/+145You have to add Boondock Saints in that list. It has a 17% Rotten score and it sold millions on DVD sales. It did so well that they even re-released the movie for a limited run in some theaters recently. It would be hard to find a movie that has such a bad critic RT score, but high viewer reviews on both RT and IMDB.
- wontstoptalking, on 07/10/2009, -2/+132The Iron Giant was INCREDIBLE.
- GhostInAShell, on 07/09/2009, -4/+133Optimus Prime vs. Iron Giant (strangely voiced by Vin Diesel, on a sidenote...)
Who wins? - WELLDOITLIVE, on 07/10/2009, -8/+131Bacon
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -8/+121Transformers 2 is the Carlos Mencia of cinema.
- IllBeBack, on 07/10/2009, -11/+107But one has Megan Fox...
hmmmmmmmmmmmm - sockpuppets, on 07/10/2009, -3/+96I'm just here for the hummers.
- MLGLies, on 07/10/2009, -1/+82I have come to realize that the Burger King "King" was modeled after Baron Munchausen....
Striking resemblance - eastwood24, on 07/09/2009, -1/+72From what I can tell, the critics were saying 'suck it' to mostly action/adventure type movies with lots of special effects. These types of movies are more entertaining in movie theatres than at home compared to dramas and what not.
- feezus, on 07/10/2009, -2/+71Please don't refer to Revenge of the Fallen as TF2. You will confuse and disappoint people.
- inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+68Fight Club's DVD booklet is filled with critics saying horrible things about it.
- keviniskool, on 07/10/2009, -2/+68I don't know, maybe because the concept of a superhero going through a midlife crisis is a complete departure from what one would expect and therefore lends itself to some clever moments?
- Polycarp87, on 07/10/2009, -5/+70That movie is a good example of one that I like despite the critics saying it is garbage. Ultimately critics just offer opinions, and the type of person who becomes a film critic has a specific personality and tastes often much different from my own.
- nurbsenvi, on 07/10/2009, -5/+69But Megan Fox has toe thumbs.
hmmmmmmmmmmmm - FakingFamous, on 07/10/2009, -3/+61crazy that Almost Famous flopped
- nurbsenvi, on 07/10/2009, -0/+57Comparing Iron Giant to Transformers is an insult.
- richmomz, on 07/10/2009, -2/+55Cinematic quality != boxoffice success.
Case in point - Transformers 2 outgrossed The Godfather. - KirbyMeister, on 07/10/2009, -1/+50The guy that invented the fishsticks joke?
- XPpro, on 07/10/2009, -2/+50Hancock started with a cool premise then kind of went nowhere and died a slow and miserable death.
- trer, on 07/10/2009, -7/+55Mouth breathers like explosions and ***** and not so much faggy talk.
- tbttfox, on 07/10/2009, -0/+47In this case, the variable was the film's release. Iron Giant was only in theaters a couple weeks before it was pulled for some political/marketing *****. (BTW, it was directed by Brad Bird of Pixar fame)
But having Megan Fox on screen doesn't hurt ANY box office returns. Ever. - hivoltage815, on 07/10/2009, -8/+54Even though I have yet to see Wolverine, Terminator, or Transformers, I think you are going too far to call people who desire to watch these dumb. It's like watching a sporting event, you are there to cheer on a protagonist and watch people get hit and stuff explode, not be riveted on an intellectual level. I find nothing wrong with that. If your emotional state is pushed in a positive direction, then you clearly made a smart movie and are hopefully finding a good investment for your time and money.
- shujin, on 07/10/2009, -0/+45Long story short - advertising works
- appleseed1234, on 07/10/2009, -3/+46But one is more marketable.
hmmmmmmmmmmm - unfilterthought, on 07/10/2009, -3/+45They wouldnt fight fool. They would combine forces.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 07/10/2009, -3/+44Iron Giant is one of the favorite movies of my kids.
- Krakerjax, on 07/10/2009, -2/+42Boondock Saints? suck? Hah! Make like a tree and get the ***** out of here.
- sharkd, on 07/10/2009, -0/+40First guess: Music Licensing
- shiftyroach, on 07/10/2009, -9/+49megan fox is not all that and a bag of potato chips
- twiztidsinz, on 07/10/2009, -0/+38Actually, what you described RoroCo, is what makes a movie a "cult classic"... and there have been more than a few.
- amcnair, on 07/10/2009, -2/+37Note my comment above about nuclear blast and re-entry from space and get back to me on which is more badass.
- EatingPie, on 07/10/2009, -18/+53Thing is, how many people liked Transformers 2 (besides me!)? EVERYONE I have spoken to has hated it. And even though I liked it, it had some really idiotic moments, besides big balls, leg humping robots, stoned moms, there's the Jar Jar twins. Worf's brother, however, is a stroke of genius!
These are all legitimate criticisms, and what the critics should be talking about: Quality. Besides, they tend to look for art or artistry. Michael Bay makes some of the highest grossers out there, but nobody would ever use the terms "art" or "artistry" to describe one of his movies!
-Pie - darknecross, on 07/10/2009, -0/+35Transformers: ROFL
- KirbyMeister, on 07/10/2009, -1/+36I'm pretty sure Team Fortress 2 has an average score of a lot higher then 19%.
Well you did say TF2... - immatellyouwhat, on 07/10/2009, -1/+36Your sentence structure is a favorite of mine.
- The0, on 07/10/2009, -0/+33Something tells me you didn't understand the infographic.
- Hero0fTime, on 07/10/2009, -1/+33"I... I not gun. "
- DownIsTheNewUp, on 07/10/2009, -0/+32Why did Almost Famous cost so much money? All the special effects? Does Patrick Fugit get $25 million per movie?
- Shananra, on 07/10/2009, -0/+32It's animated, animation is very time consuming and labor intensive, therefore expensive
- ChromaVita, on 07/10/2009, -1/+31Yea, just refer to it as T2.
...oh wait. -
