Movie Matchmaker: Who Should Direct Ghost in the Shell?
thedeadbolt.com — A few weeks ago, it was announced that DreamWorks had acquired the rights to turn the beyond-cool Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell into a movie. Steven Spielberg is an amazing filmmaker, but here's the ying and the yang (or the Betty and Veronica) of two different directors who should direct Ghost in the Shell.

- Ratteler, on 05/09/2008, -8/+3Matt Reeves/J.J. Abrams would be my choice based on Cloverfield. While the giant monster aspect isn't applicable, they did a great job with the first person perspective stuff. A live action GitS should play on that POV aspect if it's going to add anything to the story. Otherwise, why not just watch the DVD again?
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8You cannot be serious. Keep Matt Reeves and especially J.J. Abrams the hell away from GitS.
A live action remake shouldn't add to the story. It should preserve it.- Ratteler, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1"A live action remake shouldn't add to the story. It should preserve it."
Then what's the point of making it live action? We already have a brilliantly done story. Just to stick "real" people in it, shot for shot is a waist of time.

- walkingdogs, on 05/09/2008, -0/+26No One. It stands on its own just fine. Why try to fix something that isn't broken. Damn hollywood.
- DirtyCash, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13Exactly... The only remake should be some sort of re-release in HD. same goes for Akira...
- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8Or even better, a new theatrical print and release.
- MillionsLivio, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Same goes for Evangelion, which I can see them ***** up the worst.
- Sirocco, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I'm fine with things as they are. If anything of Shirow's is going to get big budget treatment, I'd vote for Tank Police.

- mediaphile, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3All of the choices presented in that article would be terrible. Robert Zemeckis? Takashi Miike? What do these guys have to do with violent, introspective, philosophical science fiction? And don't get me started on the Wachowski brothers.
- diabolicdiablo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+11I think Takashi Miike might do a good job, I liked Ichi the Killer but I'm not sure he has any scifi experience .
And for the record The Wachowski brothers haven't made a good movie since the original Matrix.- BlueSkyfish, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3The Animatrix was amazing, but they only wrote part of it. Didn't they also make V for Vendetta?
- Shogi, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Are you insane? Takashi Miike would turn GitS into a gorefest with half the intelligence the original had.
- GOVStooge, on 05/10/2008, -0/+10Clearly it needs to be Uwe Boll.
- leetdood, on 05/10/2008, -0/+8Wachowski Brothers? Forget it. Personally, I like to pretend the two Matrix sequels don't exist.
- electricdragon, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4It's good to see renewed interest in Cyberpunk stuff, but seriously we don't need a GITS live action film. The original is great and the manga is even better, Hollywood please don't do it.
- munleymun, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Christopher Nolan or David Fincher. They're the only big name directors I can think of that are dark enough to do the original justice.
- Shogi, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1David Cronenberg perhaps.
- Thumper13, on 05/10/2008, -0/+4Nobody!!!! The movie has already been made perfectly.
Just what we need, Hollywood to ***** this up.
Leave Kusanagi alone! - MillionsLivio, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1There are not many directors I can think of that could pull this off, Kubrick would have been perfect for it. Really the same goes for Akira and the Evangelion trilogy, I do not think any of them will be done well and it's rather sad as an anime (and film) fan.
- Shogi, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Only the Puppeteer could orchestrate something of this magnitude.
- thesubs, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1How about Uwe Boll
(lol) - Zique, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Peter Jackson.
