Metacritic has reviews of Superman
metacritic.com — "This Superman is like nothing you've ever seen before, but it tickles something primitive and comforting at the back of the mind. Gorgeously detailed and meticulously realized, it's a homecoming of a movie. Just wait for the theme; you'll understand." ---Premiere, Sara Brady

- sidebuster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I just watched it yesterday and I have to say that I didn't care for it at all. Nothing exciting really happened. I didn't feel intensity or get that "oh *****!" effect.
Then again I am not a fan of superman... **runs away fast** marvel ftw! - tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Come on.. it was pretty bad.
- danhuard, on 10/12/2007, -17/+27oh man, keith and i were gonna see it in imax but they only had a 10pm adn 1:15am showing!

- deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19What, you mean there aren't any 14 year old girls that'll rob old pervs at gun point on Digg?
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15I saw it yesterday with a few friends in a private showing. Simply sucked.
- SugarRay, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I agree.
- boo37, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Argh, I don't know what to think from the previews. Some parts look intense and fun, but the whole Lois Lane having a kid situation seems really corny. Plus the exchange between Lex and the lispy, shaggy-haired brat almost ruined the whole thing.
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14I saw it yesterday at a screening and it was disappointing. It was full of cliche, ordinary lines and predictable scenes. The actor fits the role of Superman well but man the script really could have been written better. The plot was so-so, the lines cheesy, and the development terrible. It is still a good popcorn movie though, so if you are bored, you may want to check it out nevertheless.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You're disappointed that the lines were cheesy? Have you ever read a Superman book?
Now before you bury me:
I'm a huge fan of Superman, all I'm saying is that cheesy and cliche are just part of and have always been part of Superman. - DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Agree 100% Cybernetic. I felt the trailer for Spider-Man 3 was better than Superman Returns....which is really sad. You really can't have high hopes for a Superman flick. I mean yeah he's super powerful, and yeah he's a boyscout, but in the end we're watching a Superman movie...and we're going to be bored.
- merr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21You're disappointed that the lines were cheesy? Have you ever read a Superman book?
- tkw722, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7What sucked about it?
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9"like nothing you've ever seen before"... yet it gets a 71.
- hack58, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I saw it and it was great.
- beanska, on 10/12/2007, -18/+10If Superman is so super, then why does he not fight Chuck Norris?
- borchard76, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Because he is superman and smart enough to know that Chuck Norris can't be beaten.
This is obvious to anyone. It is also the reason that I don't remember seeing superman in the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny (google it ya lazy bums!). I could be wrong, but I don't think he was there, and with good reason.
FWIW, superman is smarter than most people realize, he just doesn't care about ultra tech the way most other 'smart' superheros do. - Zaxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6He was in The Ultimate Showdown for Ultimate destiny.. :)
He plays a minor role, but man calling us lazy and making us look up the link only to find out that you were wrong and too lazy to check it for yourself! j/k
- borchard76, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Because he is superman and smart enough to know that Chuck Norris can't be beaten.
- Stormwysper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Better or worse then X3?
- KillerX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Better than X3
- RAT-Man, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4X3 is good, Superman Returns is bad.
- JJVH, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8X3 was horrendous, so the opposite of everything you say must be true.
- Ninjaneer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think it's hard to be much worse than X3. I would place X3 in a league with Daredevil. I have high hopes for Superman.
- drzaiusx11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ratman, go back to bizarro world.
- ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Could anyone who saw it perhaps back up their comments with some examples/justification. I'm trying to decide whether to go see this or just wait around for the bittorr...err...DVD.
- dracula7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6see the strangers with candy movie, it looks good
- DonSchenck, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2Because Chuck Norris would kick Superman's ass ... duh.
- treleung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Premiere really has any weight? That's similar to getting a review from entertainment weekly or T.V. guide. It's worthless. I'm not saying that they aren't right, but I'm just saying withold judgement guys. They have a weak reviewing crew.
- CoconutKC, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Better than X3, but that's not saying much.
If you want a spot on review read Roger Ebert's review, I don't always agree with the guy but he's 100% correct this time.- avocadobeandip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9100% correct this time? I'm sorry but Ebert is far off on a lot of his review.
***Possible Spoilers*** (Even though they're from a review)
In regard to the child in the film, Ebert believes "It would have been fun to give Superman a bright, sassy child, like one of the Spy Kids, and make him a part of the plot."
Now, if that doesn't scream out-of-touch, then I don't know what does. - nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah is anyone else tired of the smarter-than-the-adults kids in films these days. I think the kid in Superman Returns was an accurate portrayal of a 5ish years old kid.
- avocadobeandip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9100% correct this time? I'm sorry but Ebert is far off on a lot of his review.
- primal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I saw it last night. It's good, but there are several slow and pointless scenes that should have been cut. The movie was too long to have meaningless scenes. I suggest everyone see it once, but I personally won't be heading back to see it anytime soon.
- SmokeyTreats, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7"When the hero, his alter ego, his girlfriend and the villain all seem to lack any joy in being themselves, why should we feel joy at watching them?"
If Ebert says it sucks, it sucks. I'll wait for the DVD.- Moskie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Way to think for yourself there, buddy.
And what kind of criticism is that anyway? Because the characters aren't shiny happy people, you can't enjoy the movie? They have issues, and that helps to make them interesting.
The movie wasn't perfect, but I find Ebert's review a little out-of-touch.
- Moskie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Way to think for yourself there, buddy.
- BarleyWind, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Metacritic has reviews of a new film? Thanks for this breaking news.
- gregharmon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0I just can't take these super hero movies seriously enough to enjoy them. I just want to breakout laughing everytime I see superman wearing that incredibly silly outfit. Perhaps I'm just getting old. :( I even had the same problem with Batman Begins although I did enjoy that movie and believe it deserves the ratings it got, which were all good. Seeing a grown man wearing a bat outfit still cracked me up.
I did enjoy The Hulk, however, probably because the super hero character didn't seem so serious. A 10,000 pound green man jumping around is entertaining. A normal looking man flying around in tights; it just isn't right.
I can't til The Transformers movie is released. Maybe I'm not so old afterall.- gregharmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I apologize for the mistakes in my previous post. I was in the midst of editing it when the time expired! That is so annoying!
- SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2the movie was good, long as hell but good
- SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3LMAO someone actually said X3 is better than superman returns, LMAO. I bet you think Dean Cain was a better superman 2
- RANDARR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I guess I'm out of touch then, too, because you know what... it's not supposed to suck to be Superman! Holy Cow, you're invulnerable, you can fly, see through stuff, melt things with your eyes and blow out forest fires. I thought the movie was good, but I didn't go to see a melancholy man of steel! It would have been a hundred times better if it hadn't been so gloomy. To me and my out-of-touch self, anyway.
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How could it be dramatic if the entire time he was oh-so-happy? There's no drama in that. Then again, you might not care about drama if all you went for was to see Superman do cool stuff. Plus, he was only pissed off at the end really, not gloomy. And when he finds out Lois Lane *spoiler* has a kid.
- rhainman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I guess whenever Metacritic reviews something, we should start a thread on it.
Or maybe not. - unrealJEDI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Saw the movie last night, I think if you like the Superman idea in general, you will like this movie. Most people complain that Superman is to perfect a hero which I disagree with, but if you think that, you obviously won't like Superman Returns or ANY of the Superman movies... I didn't think Superman Returns was crazy awesome, but I enjoyed it. I thought Kevin Spacey did an excellent job, he really made the movie for me. The other actors were good too, but Kevin Spacey really stood out.
I agree that the movie was slightly to long, I was looking at my watch a little bit towards the end not because I was bored, but because the movie seemed to have a tough time ending. The movie jumped from scene to scene to scene and so on at the end, I just felt like the ending was a bit weak and to long. It definitely DID NOT ruin the movie for me. There were also a couple of MAJOR plot holes which I won't go into, but they are there.... even if you can't get past some of the things bad about the movie, it's still worth seeing and I think most people will enjoy it.
Now that I have talked about the bast stuff a little, the best thing in the movie was the comedy. I think the comedy out drove the special effects, the drama and story. There were a lot of points where the entire audience including myself laughed out loud. At some points it was so loud that I couldn't hear the next lines coming from the characters. And it wasn't that we were laughing at dramatic parts of the movie, they just had some really well timed dialogue and scenes. I also really enjoyed the throw backs to the old Superman movies.
I am going to see the movie one more time to make my final verdict on the movie, but overall I think most people enjoyed the movie. Walking out of the theater I didn't hear any negative comments about that movie and the 4 friends I saw it with enjoyed the movie. It wasn't as amazing as I thought it was going to be, but good enough that I want to see it again...- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a very good description of the film and reflects much of how I felt after seeing it.
As some additions, I saw it at 10:00pm Tuesday night and have plans to see it in IMAX this Friday. I agree with you that while it was not the be all, end all film, it certainly was a very enjoyable movie. I also checked my watch a couple times near the end and felt the ending was a bit stretched, but it could have also been my discomfort for seeing Superman so vulnerable and human after his fall from the sky. The hospital scene could have been removed.
For me, most of my enjoyment stemmed from the score. Not only did I have goosebumps the moment the opening music/credits appeared, but also each time Clark shed his suit for another. And just as I despised seeing Superman in weakness, it's just as important to note even the most powerful can fall.
I wouldn't call myself a Superman fanatic, hell, I've never even opened a comic. The fact is, I, along with many others here grew up watching Superman. Personally, I enjoyed the film because it was exciting, disheartening, and just comical enough to be a perfect tribute to the true, late great Superman that was Christopher Reeve.
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is a very good description of the film and reflects much of how I felt after seeing it.
- jolton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The movie was excellent. I'd reccommend for any one to go see it, you won't be dissappointed at all.
- caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree...Excellent...
- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The movie was AMAZING. Someone tell me the plot points? I didn't see any. Then again, I didn't see any the first time I watched Minority Report too...
It really bothers me the type of movie-goer who constantly says (either out-loud or in their head), "Oh, that's not possible!", "That's so dumb", "Ya, right", or anyone who constantly and endlessly thinks critically about a film. Sit back! Relax! Don't think, be entertained!- nato64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Plot HOLES, not plot points. My bad. Stupid digg comment editing!!
- Kevinedge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The one not plot hole but just head scratcher was Superman has been gone for 5 yrs and within hours of his return of heres Clark who's also been gone for 5 yrs and nobody questioned it.
- Kevinedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I saw it Imax 3d last night. It did have its cheesy parts but it was made up for with the action scence. Also I thought some of the "rescues and lois, superman scenes felt very superman 1ish which is a good thing.
- locojones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But if a movie cost $250,000,000 to make, I expect it to be un-friggin-believable. From these reviews, it just sounds ho-hum. How disappointing.
- crabbe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Money has nothing to do with the quality of a movie -- look at Napoleon Dynamite.
- bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3man o man, that superman theme by John Williams is one of the best ever. I swear that when i run and it comes on my ipod i feel like it'll make me run faster, jump higher, and stop bullets with my eye... well maybe not that last one...
- krisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Saw it last night. It was OK, but it lacks the sense of fun and spirit of Donner's 78 version. Also too long,by about 30 minutes. It's like the last 45 minutes of the movie is all epilogue. You can tell Singer was in love with every single scene, and he really could have been a little more objective in the editing department. Still, it's magnificently beautiful, and definitely checking out, and it's a true showcase of what HD digital cinematography is going to be like. I'm really hoping that the next film (and I'm sure there will be another) has a lighter touch, now that all this moody Lois?Kal-El heartbreak stuff is out of the way.
- dknightbatman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I LOVED this movie. I had gone into this movie disliking many aspects of the film (as many of us comic nerds tend to do) but I have to say that I eventually gained an appreciation for the actors and decided to give them a chance. Acting wise, everyone in the movie was great from Kevin Spacey to the virtually uknown Brandon Routh (whom IMHO was really great, and he was eerily similiar to Christopher Reeves) they all played their roles and impressed me very much. The parts that really had an impact on me is whenever Superman did his heroic thing and the beautiful John Williams score came into play, the first big scene with the plane literally tugged at my heartstring as everyone cheered for the good guy, which in the day of the "anti-hero" really surprised me. I know a lot of people have gripes with the length of the film but I for one think two and a half hours is just perfect for a big epic movie like this one. Now onto the things I disliked.... Hmmmm maybe no one knowing Clark and Superman were the same character? I mean they both show up on the same day and no one puts anything together. One things I loved that this film did that the other Superman movies didnt was focus on the aspect that Superman is pretty much invincible and has a limtitless strength which I think is how the hero should be portrayed. I dont know if it was something I was going through personally but there is a moment at the end where a character is about to die and while emotional buildup is playing out I did get a little teary eyed, call me a pansy or whatnot but I have an emotional investment in the character after years of reading.
All in all, a great film that I hope will be talked about for a while and if you see any movie in the theatres this summer, make Superman it for a 32 inch non HD tv cant really convey all the scenes in this movie correctly. All this and the Spider-man 3 trailer that nearly stopped my heart. Definately worth my $5 movie ticket if you ask me.
10/10- Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I absolutely agree there dk. For those that read the comic on a regular basic, the movie shares in common the fact that Superman has both a joyful joking side as well as a serious side (has no one read the recent Infinite Crisis series?).
!!!WARNING!!!!

..
.
As for Superman having a ***, that isn't outside the realm of possibility. Several Elseworld and alternative universe/timeline story arcs in the comics have done far more "out there" things. I think it was great because it added the human element that we so often miss when dealing with Superman. We forget, that while he is Kryptonian, he was raised a human, and will act as a human.
***END Spoiler Section***
As for those that think Superman uno and Superman dos were better, I have two points to make.
Superman never...ever...ever flys around the world to turn back time. That was one of the most assinine (spelling?), uncreative things a writer could have done. Second. in Superman 2, a super kiss that wipes away memory and pretty much the best part of Superman 2.
All in all, Superman Returns was by far the best Superman movie yet, but hopefully not to come.
- Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I absolutely agree there dk. For those that read the comic on a regular basic, the movie shares in common the fact that Superman has both a joyful joking side as well as a serious side (has no one read the recent Infinite Crisis series?).
- intoflatlines, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I saw it in IMAX 3D and I thought it was pretty good. The action scenes were amazing. Towards the end, it seemed to slow down a little, but overall I liked it. I think it was worth the $11.50 and getting out of the theater at 4 AM. But that's just me.
- mikepx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2B O R I N G ! It should have been titled Louis Lane Returns, because it feels like you see way more of her than Superman. And I hope I'm not spoiling anything for anyone when I say this: There is NO FREAKING VILLAIN in this movie, Lex just prances around like a moron and his "plan" for world domination and to kill Superman is not very yaw dropping to say the least. I love when they make comic book movies long, in fact that's what a lot of people said that X3 needed but this one could have cut out about an hour of BORING DIALOGUE and another few minutes of showing the one tear go down Superman, Louis, and Lex's Tranny Hooker Sidekick's face. If your expecting the big guy in the red cape to through it down with... SOMETHING, it will not happen, Superman does not fight anything in this, almost 3 hour long movie! Brandon Routh did make a very convincing Superman/Clark Kent but they just didn't give him a any reason to be all that Super.
- rickpable, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude, Louis is a guy's name.
- kcyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*****************SPOILER*****************
supe having a kid is not a plot hole or an insane thought (at first I thought it was). Remember in Superman 2, he became human and slept with lois. It could also be the reason the kid was not affected by kryptonite. I thought the story was well written and well thoughtout.
My only negative feeling was that the characters looked waaaaay too young.
*****************END SPOILER***************** - trilogy187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with alex--> a great film ,
singer has turned these comic book movies into to gold - fozzie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had low expectations. Superman, you complete me!
