- seanayb, on 11/04/2009, -0/+13Disney knows Marvel's movie schedule and can take it into account. No need to worry.
- DarkBlueAnt, on 11/04/2009, -0/+12The problem with the comics now are that they're $4 for a 20 page issue. Not many casual fans are going to shell out so that they can read issue 4 of one character's chapter in a 12 issue multi-crossover event series.
So yeah... it's all about movies, cartoons, and toys now, but they made a big mistake with their toy lines by selling them to Hasbro, who has lowered the quality heavily. They've also been screwing up with their cartoons by putting them on stations where most people will never see them. - Hergio, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8it just looks worse because last summer was so unusually high.
- Poseur117, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Does your friend Chris Brown go around punching Rihanna?
- L0NER, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Most 6 year old's wardrobe consist entirely of spider-man t-shirts and pajama's so they have that going for them.
- RetlawST, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7It's like listening to the Meth junky complain about the coke fiend.
"Man, I hate those coke addicts. They give us druggies a bad name...but at least they keep my dealer in the black so he can get me my Meth. Anyway, I gtg, I need to go clean my bathroom for 16 hours and find a place to spit out this tooth." - goomba323, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6yes....yes you are.
- YuriSakazaki, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4I kinda agree. I never really got into all that Magic stuff, but I will read the crap out of comics. Different types of geeks exist, obviously, and MtG geeks generally don't mesh with Comic geeks, which is strange considering that our merchandise is sold at the same stores.
I've never been to Comics-N-More since I live a lot closer to Time Travelers in Berkley, but I will check it out next time I'm out that way to go to Micro Center or something. - cuervoman914, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3whoa, you just pulled a fox and snuck in an advert there. well played.
- inactive, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3I think one problem is there is a schism between hardcore comic fans and casual ones.
Myself for example, I never buy monthly issues, there is just too many backstory to keep up with and like you said, I hate paying 4 dollars for a 20 page issuse i will throw away.
Now what I WILL pay for is I will pay a good 30-40 dollars for a nice hardbound graphic novel, preferably a store that fits inside itself and doesn't require me to know 40 years of character history much like Batman: The Killing Joke for example. - sodade, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3People are still into Magic? Awesome 'cause I have boxes full of that stuff in the garage that I could sell.
- RetlawST, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3Nah, Disney is fine. They just need a little bit of time to whore out ideas to figure the best way to make a bang with their buck. Start making a list of ***** that crosses their IP/Content Style and you'll probably see over half of it come true in 5 years
Incredibles/Marvel crossovers?
Hanna Montana comic?
Sky-HIghesque X-Men?
Goofy/Blob porn? - RizzosBack, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3No, but he does enjoy us asking him about that regularly.
- Charlotte_Web, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I think there's a number of issues plaguing comics, the price point being only one of them. Another problem is that the target age range has shifted higher, as comics have gotten much darker and much more adult over the past couple of decades.
- r1y23, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2You know that a bunch of the guys in the World Series of Poker were/are pro magic players? I guess it carries a nerd stigma with it though.
- BeforeSputnik, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I enjoy playing magic, but it is a bit of a crack addiction. When i'm out of it, i feel like all that time and money was wasted, but when i occasionally get drawn back in, it convinces me to buy more cards and spend my time building new decks.
personal note: i am not that much of a nerd. - RizzosBack, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3Why? Because a guy who shops at the same store thinks they're douchebags? I'm guessing you'll get that at Meijer too.
- pinchduck, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3I'm guessing that the Rodent bought Marvel exactly so it could put all the characters in movies, not because of the comics. It was essentially an intellectual property purchase. If the funny books make some cash, so much the better.
- ptoomey, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Quarter over quarter is meaningless when looking at a company involved in small numbers of movie releases. Blockbusters don't come out on a fiscal schedule, they come one when they're ready. The lack of a blockbuster in the 3rd quarter when there was one last year in the 3rd quarter doesn't mean a thing. Now if the next Iron Man movie comes out and tanks, THEN it may be time for Mickey to start drinking.
- fandyllic, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Disney should only be concerned if the trend continues for 3 or more years. We are in the Great Recession after all. Disney is sweating already. Have you seen the barrage of ads for their resorts? I'll bet you the attendance there is far down as well.
Marvel getting purchased by Disney sucks. Disney can't keep their moralistic/hypocritical hands out of companies they buy. Look what they did to Miramax. - RizzosBack, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2They're in the World Series of Poker. That makes them nerds already. Rich nerds, but nerds nonetheless.
- busterbros, on 11/04/2009, -2/+3I hope that a few of those magic card crackheads read this post, and start buying their cards down the street at Meijer.
- Spacejack, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1The "C" in MCG hasn't stood for comics in a long time. It stands for Characters. So yeah, you're absolutely right. Marvel's concern with comics is secondary at best. The notable milestone in that department was when they stopped publishing Conan and other books from outside licenses.
- NJank, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1wonder what Incredibles would have been like post-acquisition?
- RizzosBack, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2Dude, ***** Time Travelers. And that ***** Mike who runs it.
Seriously, go to Comics-N-More, Chris does a club membership, 20 dollars for a lifetime membership, you get a pull and 20% off new comics.
He doesn't do much in the way of back issues but again, 20% off new comics for club members, pretty much makes it a no brainer. Tell him Mike Rizzo sent you, not that it will do much.
Also Micro Center is the ***** too. - innocentsinner, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Give us a third season of Spectacular Spider-Man :(
- falconear, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1It's a bummer...just as comics are getting better than they've been in YEARS things like out of control pricing are killing them. The future may be graphic novels, or digitial media.
- YuriSakazaki, on 11/04/2009, -1/+1God bless DCP
- hymneforthedead, on 11/04/2009, -2/+2...psssst... ***** head, I meant the other way around.
- RizzosBack, on 11/04/2009, -6/+6It's no surprise that Marvel is all about the movies now. And I can't blame them. As a purist who hasn't really enjoyed most of the film outings from the House of Ideas (though they have gotten a lot better lately) I'm totally cool with whoring out the characters on film to finance the more traditional medium.
It's exactly like collectible card games.
I hate magic, and the people who play magic. They're the kind of nerds that give normal ones like me a bad name. But they're personal addiction is the kind of money maker that keeps comic shops like my own (Comics-N-More in Madison Heights, run by my friend Chris Brown) in business.
i.e. without those magic card crackheads spending their money to keep my comic book store open, no new comics, an by extension without Spider-Man 3 sucking huge balls, I wouldn't be able to read Amazing Spider-Man on a biweekly basis.
So it's all fine by me. - photochopped, on 11/04/2009, -0/+0Maybe the mandatory 10 spin off books for each main character is starting to dilute the waters. I mean, I do enjoy the recent onslaught of Deadpool titles, but maybe they should just center on creating good characters and stories instead of whoring 3.99 comics with art that looks like it was make on Deviant Art.
- TheCycloneJoker, on 11/04/2009, -1/+0I agree with the price point. If they are whining and suffering from the lack of singles issues, then there has to be a reason for it. Odd enough, I doubt they aren't complaining about their graphic novel sales which probably have skyrocketed. Meaning there is no use for me to pay that much money per single with ads (unless its an indie book I like) for the storyline than compiling it using better materials that age and no ads.
THere are some 'fun' marvel books. Runaways is still a very strong title with a good story. But yeah I agree the whole universe (not the ultimate) is pretty dark rife with political intrigue. The X-books have been meh as of late as well. Deadpool is great in dosage because sometimes they really screw him up.
Overall, they do have to focus on the other medias to portray their products. They have to adapt but also be endearing to its audience as well. - JessterKing, on 11/04/2009, -3/+2OR it could be that since the news of Disney wanting to buy marvel has stopped collectors and other comic book readers from buying as many comics. Also when you up the price of something like comic books, the only ones that will keep their buying habits the same will be the die hard fans, the average person how has a few favorites and buys them occasionally will either buy fewer or just buy something else.
- NJank, on 11/04/2009, -5/+2pssst....
Disney to Acquire Marvel Entertainment (AUGUST 31, 2009)
http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-20090831-90238 ... - hymneforthedead, on 11/04/2009, -9/+5Now wouldn't it be awesome if Disney was brought out by Marvel?. .. just imagine how much they could both profit XD
