- crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -6/+57Substandard? Darabont wrote it and Spielberg was ecstatic about it. Darabont adapted 'Shawshank Redemption,' and Spielberg is SPIELBERG.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44"Lucas read it and said, ‘Yeah, I don’t think so, I don’t like it.’"
Yeah we all know we can trust George's insight when it comes to script writing. The Star Wars prequels are proof of that, right?
Come on, at least he had the clairvoyance to undercut Jar Jar's presence after Episode I! - seanthebond, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37It couldn't have been any worse than 'Attack of the Clones'.
- zort, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Yeah, Lucas would never make substandard sequels to his movies...
- bigfkncee, on 10/12/2007, -22/+48better to kill it then to make a substandard sequel anyway
- SuperSloth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23A.I.'s problem was that Spielberg can't make a Stanley Kubrick film.
Spielberg can make movies. Lucas can write first drafts.
When Lucas directs and writes, if he wants his characters to be happy they say "I'm happy". If they're angry, they say "I'm angry". He refuses to let actors act. It's stupid. - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"'and Spielberg is SPIELBERG.'
A.I.
That is all"
Oh come on. While A.I. might not have been a great film, you're holding it against Spielberg? Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T., Empire of The Sun(totally underrated), Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, the Indiana Jones films...
Not to mention the films he produced that have been smash hits. Back to The Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Twister, MIB, ER(yes, the TV show. He wanted to make it into a movie in the 80s.. never happened, became a show which is still running.), Shrek(he was an e.p, but also uncredited.), Monster House...
The man directed some great films, many of which are already considered classics. So what if A.I wasn't a great film. Neither was Hook or 1941, but that didn't stop him from going on to the next project with lessons learned from his failures.
I didn't know great directors needed to *always* make great films. They're human, they can make mistakes. - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19only prequels :)
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -18/+32"and Spielberg is SPIELBERG."
A.I.
That is all - crumbelievable, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19@brstilson
I liked A.I and did you see Munich? Listen, however you feel about Spielberg, one thing we can all agree on is that 'Phantom Menace' sucked.
What I'm trying to say is that Lucas lost his mind somewhere in the early 90s. You know why Empire Strikes Back and RotJ were so good? Because they weren't written or directed by him (he wrote the story). - sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The real reason Lucas isn't happy is that someone told him that he can't use computer generated characters for everyone in the film. He thought he was going to have his own little puppet show.
- Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Stop defending Lucas. He is indefensible.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8OPINION: Spielberg is THE best at what he does.
FACT: Lucas sucks dog dick. - TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8More info here:

I seem to remember an article about Ford and Spielberg teaming up to convince Lucas that something was lame, and he reluctantly gave in (I can't find the link though). It's possible that they will botch this movie, but I'm excited anyway. I just hope they hurry up. Lucas still has the Star Wars TV series to make, the re-release of the Star Wars movies in 3-D, and then Star Wars episodes 7, 8, and 9 (I know he says he won't do more Star Wars movies, but I don't believe him). - NickyBatts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Man... Lucas just doesn't ***** get it does he?
- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7No, you idiot. That was Jan de Bont... Big difference!
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The fact is, Lucas has not made a quality film in years. He's a whore and his movies are like a book with a flashy cover but contains 300 blank pages.
I for one am glad he isn't ruining a classic. Just let it be for Science's sake. - Thex1138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's not the years...it's the mileage.
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7On the contrary, Spielberg has become a better director over the years and has gained the power to balance blockbusters with films he finds intellectually/emotionally interesting. He didn't bow to Hollywood, Hollywood bowed in to him.
- lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Lucas is just pissed about his Star Wars prequels sucking, and the fact that he absolutely can not write a script. That...and he's waiting for the new technology to realize his dreams.
- Dracos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If Lucas didn't like the script, it had to be good.
Spielberg should buy Lucas out of the Indy franchise and make the movie with Darabont's script anyway. - slothlovechunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If anyone is over-rated it's Lucas. He's been milking a half-way decent film for over 3 decades. If he let someone else do all the work on the Star Wars prequels, they might have not been such trash.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He can?

Read the links. I think you'll find that Star Wars isn't as original as you think it is... - Osjpr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You need to take a look at the Star Wars prequels. They will make you cry.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4moviehole is linking to the original interview with Darabont. CHUD is the original source.
http://www.chud.com/index.php?type=news&id=7971 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The harsh reality about hollywood and creative jobs in general is that Spielberg is only as good as his last flop. *See the copella and lucas.
- ellion, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Yes, and George Lucas is George Lucas. I won't judge him, because some movie site ist quoting Darabont that everything was fine, but Lucas stinked
Just hope they get it done before one of that guys is too old :) - DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4To paraphrase Brian Posehn
"The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones don't just suck compared to the other Star Wars movies, they suck compared to other movies" - dFaktor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6so darabont is pissed. big deal. there's an agreement between spielberg, lucas and ford, that if they're not happy with the script, they won't go ahead. darabont knew full well what he got himself into. and what the article fails to mention is that his rumoured script included indy chasing ufo's. i'm sorry, but i'm glad lucas shot it down.
- VanillaBaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What a load of hearsay and assumptions. Hard-to-believe hearsay and assumptions, at that.
Who says the first script was any good? The author? Yeah, great, how unbiased would the author be! Spielberg? Well, there is no confirmation anywhere that Steve liked this first script.
Maybe there was a first script, and maybe Lucas rejected it, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The script might have been terrible (we only have this person's word that the script was any good) and George might have been right to reject it.
As for all the Star Wars prequel bashing, well, I think that's amazing. Scream at the wall all you like, the prequels were extraordinarily successful and popular movies, and that was because they were damn fine movies.
Oh, yeah, I REALLY think you could have done better. I REALLY think that your lame (and in many cases, outright wrong) criticisms, made with the benefit of hindsight, indicate that George messed the prequels up. I REALLY want to watch your attempts at Episodes I-III. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Did anyone watch 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' ? That was awesome, why don't they make a second series of that instead :(
- chrisreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Darabont helped write Nightmare on Elm Street 3 (Dream Warriors), enough said -- awesome.
- royalwcheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WILLOW... best movie ever!
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Substandard? Darabont wrote it and Spielberg was ecstatic about it."
And Harrison Ford, who's now way past his prime, was going to reprise Indy. No thanks. - LeeDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If they did make it it would have to be very different from the others. He is much older now so it would need a great story to live up to what people want.... And does anyone trust Lucas now? He has done afew good movies (In the last 10yrs) but i guess he can do what he wants.....
- mccake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After a few more years, when George Lucas thinks he got the perfect script, he might then think that Harrison Ford is too old for it.
- rabidcow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and that original source was already submitted to digg:
http://www.digg.com/movies/Darabont_Explains_What_Happened_to_Indy_4
but i don't really care. - jeffreym, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Another example of a misleading headline.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So getting to a point in his career where he can make the films he wants to make is selling out? How interesting...
- Frank_the_Tank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, you know what? I'm sick of Lucas.
The prequels were bad. LucasArts, my once favorite software company, has turned into the Crappy-Star-Wars-Game Factory. He hasn't had an original fart of an idea in his head for years (Radioland Murders? Yeesh!).
And he's sick of us? I think he's tired of the fanbase because we started to question his integrity towards quality. When you're washed up and you know it, I think the last think you want is people pointing it out all the time, let alone your once biggest fans. But that's the way it goes when you're a public icon (for better or worse). - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lucas probably did not have the marketing rights (toys, etc), so thats why he killed it.
No rights no movie.
After all Lucas is more into the marketing more then he is into the movies. Look at
SW I and SW II. Marketing for that movie was on the shelves of stores at least six
or more moths before the movies came out. - satori3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this sounds like sour grapes to me.
- postal21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is too bad, Lucas has always been a great producer... He is a horrible story writer and a horrible director.
Lets be honest, the prequel trilogy to star wars was really 2 extra movies leading up to a third where he could have a lot of lightsaber battles...
Its sad that he might kill this film, because a movie like this is something hollywood seems to be lacking lately. - BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Spielberg hasnt lost his touch. You can't always make great films but I can't name a single film of his that i would label as being "bad".
How can he be losing his touch when one of his latest films was Munich? - Alagorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Indiana Jones and the Obsessive Use of CG"
I read an article saing they were going to stick with the old methods which the original three were made as they didn't want to fall into that trap! they want to make it look like the others. does this include degrading the quality of the film its shot on ;) - seansshack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Think it may just be too late for an Indy 4. Ford is getting on a bit and they don;t seem to have a good story, as it has been talked about for years but never started.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I read some recent quotes from Lucas concerning Indy 4 and the fanbase.
The crux of it was "No matter what I do they (the fans) will never be happy due to expectations. So do I make a film that I like or one that I think they will like, but in the end they will do nothing but whine and complain?"
I believe he's pretty much sick of all of us. - Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I'll fess up, I did it. I killed Indiana Jones 4.
- markintosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised that Lucas hasn't already remade the series, but with new scenes....and dew backs added in the background.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Meh, what isn't these days?
If it's not from Japanese cinema, then it's taken from Shakespear. If not that, then Greek Mythology, if not the Bible (pick which religion), if not that then literature. I don't mind things being a slight deviation from other works as long as they are put together to make an original entity.
I mean if you really look at it, Rocky is a rip off of David & Goliath. I'd still say Rocky was original. Matrix is a rip off of a comic called The Invisibles. -
