- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They've covered this theory and a ton of others on the BEST Lost podcast, LOSTCASTS! ::
http://www.lostcasts.com/
the show typically comes out the saturday after a new episode. they go in to the mythology of the show and cover many different theories. It's the thinking man's Lost Podcast, and probably the one that most Digg users would like the best. - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good theory, but it's too complex for the standard television viewer, but a loyal followers of the series my easily buy it. Plus, many viewers (actually me as I don't know about other people) want to see they get back home at the end of the series. The theory is believable, but it may not be what viewers want.

Keep in mind that the show exists to make money, and if their current formula isn't working to do that, they will change it and go down a different path.
There are no definitive answers on the show. - Viremia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting, but a stretch. No one but the writers/creaters really know what's going on.
I've heard from plenty of people who've gotten tired of not being told answers on the show. For me, I enjoy it for the characters and the narrative. The mystery is icing on the cake. - openedge1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uh...folks...the numbers...well...add up to 108. Makes perfect sense...NOT!
Or does it?
Satellite - 108 minutes, the numbers are punched in, (4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42) sending a signal to the satellite, encoding it for it's next 108 minute run.
Maybe it does make sense...AHHH!
Ok...then what could this mean? From Encarta.com
"At the beginning of the 1960s, the United States and the USSR were competing to put the first human in space. The Soviets achieved that milestone on April 12, 1961, when a 27-year-old pilot named Yuri Gagarin made a single orbit of Earth in a spacecraft called Vostok (East). Gagarin’s Vostok was launched by an R-7 booster, the same kind of rocket they had used to launch Sputnik. Although the Soviets portrayed Gagarin’s 108-minute flight as flawless, historians have since learned that Vostok experienced a malfunction that caused it to tumble during the minutes before its reentry into the atmosphere. However, Gagarin parachuted to the ground unharmed after ejecting from the descending Vostok."
So where was Gagarin...."exactly"...maybe a "magnetic disruption"?
Hmmm...
- cyberdork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, I just saw that the Oersted satellite's orbital period is 99.6min. And NOT 108min like stated in this theory.

- LordPablo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ Mockstar
Hurley got the numbers from a guy in a mental home correct?
Ever think that one of the guys told to type in the code went mad from this and ended up in the same place as Hurley? Even i figured that one out lol!
I like this theory, it explains a lot, but i think its quite complex for the average viewer, who most likely wont go on google and look up all these things (i like the show but im not that obsessed)
Also, if you dont watch this show, why bother posting? silly people - dasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you that are curious, check this site out: http://www.thehansofoundation.org/ - it is a fake site put up by the makers of Lost. Go to "Active projects". See the link named "Electromagnetic Research Initiative"?
Oh yeah, there's something to this story. - danknauff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1impressive.... if someone not associated with the show can come up with this, the real writers should be able to come up with plenty of material to keep it interesting. The only complaint I have about the show is that some episodes seem really slow and pointless. Of course I guess that all feeds into character development, so its all good...
- Malbolgia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's an impressive theory, but it has holes. The Others and the fact that only one child is born while alot of people have died are examples of this.
- kotatsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It started off well enough, but 'collective consciousness?"
Sounds ridiculous. - supergwiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good theory but it the unraveled story will be some dumbed down cop-out story. Don't forget this is TV.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a pretty sound theory! Digging~!
- hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy crap... that is THE best explanation/hypothesis I have ever heard... simply amazing the amount of thought that was put into it... nice digg!
digg++; - umrgregg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The theory is nice, but the science behind it is worse than the science in the Hollywood disaster The Core.
The bit about the boat is bogus geology; the volcanic pacific islands are not built by tectonic uplift (like the Himalaya), but rather sequential building of lava flows. That boat should be under layers of pahoehoe (if not burned to cinders) not on top of a mountain if geologic processes are used to explain its position.
Additionally, the bit about a basaltic volcano containing copious amounts of magnetite is also misleading. While it may be present, large magnetite bearing mineral veins are created in areas of tectonic extension where igneous batholiths containing heavy minerals form. Modern economic sources of magnetite are not found in Micronesia to say the least. Not nearly enough to "alter" the ionosphere. It is true that the iron oxides are biogenically created as well. They are found in all manners of organisms including humans. Although, its not established that certain organisms use it as a migratory aide.
Furthermore, the earths magnetic field does not protect us from deadly cosmic rays. Nor does it ‘disappear’ during a Brunhes-Matuyama reversal. It is the earths ATMOSPHERE that does the majority of the ‘cosmic-murder-ray’ filtering for us; the magnetic field just gives us a nice light show during extraordinarily high solar plasma bursts. Sure, maybe some ‘bad’ stuff happens during a sudden polar reversal but that list of bad things doesn’t include cosmic death and mass extinctions. - gumpy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That picture in the Flash/Green Lantern comic is a spaceship, not an 'artificial magnetoshpere'.
- kylebrothert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Check it out. A LOST theorist who responds to comments and answers questions.
BTW, it's not about being correct. The writers will turn this show into whatever they want. It's about thinking, watching, reading, discussing, and enjoying. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The theory isn't bad, but seems off somehow...
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Theory? I thought the show was just about people posing heroically on a beach somewhere.
- ttntyler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's an amazing theory
- bonzooznob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1+Digg.
My money says this is it, or (my original theory) "the island" is a "crossroads gateway" to the afterlife. If you "make up" for your "mistakes" on earth, pass GO, do not collect $200, otherwise, welcome to casa del inferno. - dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best. Theory. Ever.
Kinda out there, but I don't see any glaring holes. I just want someone to explain the damned "intelligent smoke." - pjczech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOST is an amazing show. This is a good theory.. but who knows.
- ColdDimSum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just because it was hinted at in some of the conversations I would like to refer you to the Free Will Theorem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_will_theorem
Which basically states that if humans have free will, so do elementry particles (based on sticky issues surrounding the question of quantum entanglement). - dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the full film from Lost: http://www.thehansofoundation.org/dharma.html

http://rusty.isa-geek.org/forum/viewtopic40927.htm - SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The theory definatley has some holes...but it is pretty damn good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Collective consciousness
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search
The French social theorist Émile Durkheim (1858-1917) used the term collective consciousness in his The Rules of Sociological Method (1895), Suicide (1897), and The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1912).
According to Durkheim, individual desires are limitless and constrained only by external social forces. These and bounds constitute the collective consciousness, which is embodied in a culture's formal and informal norms and values. These are expressed in a variety of ways, ranging from codified rules and laws (ie, speed limits on the highway), to more informal rules that exist only in the heads of the culture that shares the collective (ie, it's polite to cover your mouth when you sneeze). These shared norms provide common ideological ground for members of a society, and ensure that members act in agreed-upon ways.
Various forms have been identified by other sociologists, going from solidarity attitudes and memes to extreme behaviors like groupthink or herd behavior. It is a way of describing how an entire community comes together to share similar values.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_consciousness - swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Season 2 has been sucking lately. That combined with the repeat schedule made me lose interest. I missed the first new episode after their break but the one last week just reinforced that you can skip shows and miss nothing. They haven't shown anything that remotely interests me to bother guessing what is happening. Why bother, it's not logical anyway so any revelation will be pulled out of some writers ass.
If it's true they extended this to 7 seasons, I don't think they'll make it. I know they want to because 7 years = syndication gravy for the rest of their lives.
These writers are taking a page from Robert Jordan. More is often too much. - whiznat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting theory, but has a couple of problems. The worst problem is that the Oersted satellite has a orbital period of 99.62 min, not 108. Furthermore, it was launched 23 Feb 99. Most of the artifacts in the bunker indicate a date in the 60s, although if the builders could perpetrate a hoax as big as is suggested by this theory, then suppose faking the time the bunker was filled with stuff would be trivial. Nonetheless, the orbital period is way off. See the Wiki site on "Oersted satellite" and the linked project homepage.
- AI_Joe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't agree about the "Boat" others and "Renegade" others. But there are two groups of others. And there are talks about twins. So Mr. Friendly/Zeke may have a twin... Awesome digg!
- markcrules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I assumed it was an experiment... with the 'monster' a manifestation of the survivors sub-conscious. Children have active (and dangerous) imaginations, so the 'others' moved them to a shielded area.
- heymark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lost and Mythbusters on at the same time! Oh, the humanity! Too bad i'm too cheap for Tivo, or any dvr for that matter.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my god someone did their homework... It certainly explains a lot...
- sprite1221, on 06/24/2009, -0/+0The entire theory is pretty good. but the main hole that i may have looked over... if they're there to repopulate. then how? wasn't there an event that stopped mothers from being able to give birth?
- infraspace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The theory seems to require that the crash was faked. It breaks down right there becasue we saw some of the crash in s2e7.
- phpkerouac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that half of the show sucks.
- mabba18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting theory, but now that its been published the real story will never unfold this way, otherwise the writers and producers will be sued for ripping off the idea. This is the same as an unsolicited script.
- timdorr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This theory no longer works, as it was made before "The Other 48 Days". We see the plane crashes in that episode, which directly contradicts this theory. Therefore, it is incorrect.
A nice idea, but it doesn't work. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's a bunch of plot theories over at http://www.thelostaways.com
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The second season is just KILLING me. Much to slow for my liking. The first season was reasonible paced, but that was just because of the fact that they wanted to get picked up. I really don't think they'll continue for six more seasons going on like this.
- RazielX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Didn't the producers of Lost say that the intelligent black cloud is something very simple? Maybe there's just some wierd thing that's happening, something very simple....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"According to Durkheim, individual desires are limitless and constrained only by external social forces."
Individual observations on the quantum level creates very weird patterns.
If the observer wants a particle to be in a certain 'state', that's the state they get.
Another observer wants a particle to be in another 'state', that's the state they will get.
Thus the tie in.
No degree in physics needed. - Fitznoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thank u stevepoland, this theory was known to the hardcore lost fans a couple of weeks ago
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So this show isn't just about some people that got stuck on an island? I haven't ever watched it, but I like the theory about it being a crossroads to the afterlife. Is there some sort of spooky stuff happening in the show? Aw hell, y'all might make me have to get the dvds.
--------------------------------------------------
http://fuh-q.com - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0n quantum mechanics, the observer and the system being observed became mysteriously linked so that the results of any observation seemed to be determined in part by actual choices made by the observer. This situation is represented by the wave function, a function in the complex domain that contains information about both the cosmos at large and the observer's apparent state of knowledge.

Back to Lost:
The will of the island theory is the ' magnetic' ley lines found on earth, possibly all culminating into a high magnetic field where the Island is. The theory covered that aspect, aka The compass.
Thus the use of magnetic fields is possibly how the 'scientists' become the will of the island. -
